    Thirty years ago at the end of a white-water rafting trip, engineering graduate Paul Allen was still wet from being in the water, so found himself riding atop a moving trailer as they made their way back upstream. The vehicle lost control, and the trailer flipped with Paul trapped underneath. His head collided with a concrete culvert. In this episode we'll get frank with Paul, as he speaks about his life with an acquired brain injury, and the physical and emotional challenges he's faced through the journey to recovery. Fresh off a 5th placing in the 100km mountain bike race in New Zealand, Scott shares his extensive experience as a professional cyclist and a mountain biker.     Ruby was living an adventurous life studying over in Europe when a freak diving accident during a trip back home in Tassie changed her life. Ruby broke her neck and became a quadriplegic. Ruby is fluent in French and is also a professional illustrator. She is an incredibly courageous and resilient women who found a love for Wheelchair Rugby after being recruited by Australian Coaches from her hospital bed during her rehabilitation. Hear what it's like competing with and against men in a sport which she describes as a combination between ‘Ice Hockey, Rugby and Bumper cars' and how the para-athlete community has embraced her with open arms.

    Fresh off a 4-month stint competing overseas racing in Hong Kong and Europe, Jacob gives us insight into the day-to-day life of a professional Sprinter and how his aggressive cricket run up as fast bowler shifted into a career in athletics. He talks about the challenge of transitioning from a successful junior athlete to competing against men. How he took a year away from athletics to rediscover his passion for running and then came back and won the famous Stawell Gift race. Jacob competed at the Birmingham Games in the relay and takes us into the technical world of arcing. Jacob‘s goal in 2024 is to break the sub 10 second barrier, which has only been achieved by one other Australian Patrick Johnston, and to qualify for Paris.

    It took me a while to track down my next guest, proud Aboriginal man, singer and songwriter, Dewayne Everettsmith. However, I finally found him and what a privilege it was to have him on Get Frank. I have met Dewayne multiple times at events, he still to this day always delivers the most moving and beautiful welcome to country I have ever seen. His soft nature and amazing voice really does captivate you. Dewayne was born in 1987 to a Mother with a drug addiction, he then had a strained relationship with those that adopted him, which lead to many challenges as a young Aboriginal man including anger issues. Through all of this, the unconditional love received from his grandparents that guided him to a life of healing and fulfilment. In this episode Dewayne shares all, talking about closing the gap, how we can learn more about aboriginal history, trauma from his upbringing, his love of music and how that saved him, racism, and the important work he does every day in our communities to educate and keep people safe. A life full of challenges no doubt, but a life that is full of grit and positive thinking. A Tasmanian lifeline is a telephone support service for Tasmanians of all ages who need someone to talk things through with, or just need someone to listen. They are a Tasmanian-focused and Tasmanian based service offering one-off or ongoing support for anyone having a tough time. If you are experiencing loneliness, isolation, feeling anxious or overwhelmed you are not alone and can speak to one of their highly skilled support workers who can provide a friendly voice to reassure you. Ben sat with me to unpack the service, share with me some of the amazing things it offers, and talk about how important it is to be okay with making calls to such services. These issues lead to an eating disorder, mental health challenges, and even down the path of devising a plan to take her own life, as she devastatingly felt that suicide was her only option. Mel bravely shares her challenges, but also the incredible story of resilience as she accepted her demons (all with the support and acceptance of her amazing Mum) and found a way to now live a life that is healthy, clearer, and much more positive - all whilst now being over 50 kilograms lighter :) We talked about overcoming adversity, acceptance of oneself, the power in being supported (and supporting others), professional services and the impact they have, strategies around motivation, and much more.
