The office dog is nothing new and is always a treat for the owner, dog, and employees lucky enough to have one. But in Tasmania, one insurance firm has made it a policy that employees' dogs can join the workforce. For many years now, insurer RACT has permitted its Hobart employees to bring their dogs to the office. In the beginning, Fridays were the only days when dogs could come to work. Now, it's every day. “Having my best friend in here with me and not having to leave her home whilst I'm at work it's just calming and it makes everyone happy,” explains Stella's owner Morghan Lawler. “I'm quite new to RACT as well, so it means I'm meeting people. So, they come in to see her and I get a chat to people so it's really good,” says Cocoa's owner Christie Stone. Like their human owners, the dogs have identification cards, and there's also a roster so as to avoid too many dogs on each floor on any given day. “As an employer, we're really focused on employee well-being, employee engagement and we just saw this is a great thing to try and see how it went. And it went absolutely gangbusters,” says RACT CEO Mark Mugnaioni. “Dogs just have this wonderful way of breaking down barriers. I think it's a positive effect all around, for me and for Billie,” explains Billie's owner Henry James. Companion Animal Network Australia is advocating for getting more pets into workplaces. “It's proven that it decreases stress in the workplace, increases productivity. It retains staff, it brings joy to the staff. It causes a great collaborative working space for people,” says Trish Ennis of the Companion Animal Network. But not all pets can be accepted in workplaces. Rabbits, for example, could cause a lot of damage in an office like chewing through power cords. Places like kitchens or laboratories where there are chemicals are also probably best to be kept off-limits. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

RACT manual co-author Eugene Silberstein joins the podcast to talk about the titular topic of his book, Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears.  Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears is a book that introduces engineering concepts to HVAC technicians in a way they can understand and apply in the field. Enthalpy is a fancy way of saying “heat,” and we use it to refer to the total heat content (BTUs). The pressure-enthalpy chart shows the relationship between the refrigerant pressure and enthalpy in a system; it's like a P-T chart that shows the relationship between heat content instead of temperature.  Each refrigerant has its own pressure-enthalpy chart, but the points and lines on the chart usually form a right trapezoid. Dirty air filters and other less-than-ideal conditions can distort the trapezoid or shift it on the chart. Each side of the trapezoid represents the refrigerant inside a major component of the HVAC system: evaporator, compressor, condenser, and metering device. The pressure-enthalpy diagram allows you to get a look at individual components while keeping the entire system in mind.  To plot points on a pressure-enthalpy chart, you need the high side pressure, low side pressure, condenser outlet temperature, evaporator outlet temperature, and compressor inlet temperature. Pressure is usually measured in absolute units (rather than gauge units), but ballpark estimates are typically sufficient. Entropy is another concept we need to consider. Compression theoretically leaves no additional entropy and is reversible. Crossing a line of entropy means that a process is no longer reversible. Eugene and Bryan also discuss: Technicians vs. engineers Temperature vs. heat content Psychrometric and pressure-enthalpy charts Using the pressure-enthalpy diagram to assess operation costs Electrical measurements Predicting compressor failure Putting passion into learning and trades education   You can visit https://www.escogroup.org/ to purchase Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears and access all of ESCO Group's resources. Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2021 39:25

Jason Obrzut comes on the podcast to discuss A2L refrigerant facts. Jason is a member of AHRI's Safe Refrigerant Transition Task Force and author of the RACT manual.   ASHRAE designates refrigerants into categories based on toxicity (A or B) and flammability (traditionally 1, 2, and 3). So, the new A2L designation indicates that a refrigerant is relatively non-toxic but has a flammability value between 1 (low) and 2 (moderate). While propane (R-290) is a good refrigerant because it is natural and has low toxicity, it is very flammable (A3).    Future refrigerants will likely fall under the A2L designation; the mild flammability will probably be the tradeoff for efficient, low-toxicity refrigerant with a low environmental impact. However, A2L refrigerants cannot be vented, even despite their low GWP. We also cannot use these refrigerants in retrofits.   A2L refrigerants will likely become much more prevalent around 2023 as HFC refrigerants phase down. The phase-down period will be specified shortly, and it will begin with a 10% reduction; the specific parameters of the phase-down have yet to be set.    When working with A2L refrigerants like R-32, you can expect little to no change in how you work on equipment if you're already employing the best practices. Sizing and capacity will hardly change in the residential market. In the commercial sphere, these systems still look and operate quite similarly to current units.   Jason and Bryan also discuss: Refrigerant detection systems (RDS) Flowing nitrogen and other best practices Non-A2L HFC alternatives Left-handed threads Non-standard safety practices R-32 properties Refrigerant glide To learn more about A2L refrigerants, check out the AHRI Safe Refrigerant Transition Task Force's webinars, newsletters, and fact sheets at ahrinet.org/saferefrigerant.    If you have an iPhone, subscribe to the podcast HERE, and if you have an Android phone, subscribe HERE.   Check out our handy calculators HERE. How Organizations Can Take Advantage of MCC’s Risk Assessment and Mitigation Management Tool To Optimize Clinical Trials with Keith Dorricott and Linda Sullivan

MCC has developed a valuable risk assessment and mitigation management tool that organizations can use as the basis for implementing the risk-based quality management process outlined in ICH E6 (R2), section 5.0. That’s the important topic discussed in Keith Dorricott’s interview with Linda Sullivan, MBA, Executive Director of WCG’s Metric Champion Consortium (MCC).  Dorricott facilitates MCC’s QbD-RBQM-Quality Improvement Community of Practice Group. Dorricott describes how MCC members have worked collaboratively over the last five years to develop a Risk Assessment and Mitigation Management Tool (RAMMT) that moves beyond the RACT tool that was developed by another industry group. The initial drive was from members wanting MCC metrics to be aligned with individual risks to assist with risk scoring. Sullivan points out that when ICH E6 (R2) was released, the group conducted a gap analysis to determine whether the tool fully supported the approach outlined in the guidance. The tool was updated to support a new approach that includes identifying critical processes and data and utilizing MCC process maps and key risk indicator metrics already developed by MCC metric development groups. Sullivan and Dorricott note that it’s important for risk indicators to detect risk and emerging issues as early as possible to reduce, and maybe eliminate, the negative impacts. However, Sullivan and Dorricott add, when you’re scoring your risks, you should score the ‘as-is’ situation and document any additional mitigations such as improved detection, or additional training and guidance. Otherwise, the mitigations may not actually be implemented and the risk will be higher than anticipated. Indeed, Sullivan says, documentation is key to risk assessments now being required by regulators. This topic is covered in a White Paper on the MCC website,  https://metricschampion.org. And while you’re there, check out the upcoming MCC Virtual Summit.

This week’s guest is Grant page who lives in Hobart and who has been running for over 25 years. Grant won his first state title as a 12-year-old and then went onto win a bronze medal at the National Under 20 champs as a junior. He continued his progression as athlete being a regular finalist in the 1500m at Nationals and boasting a personal best of 3:42 over this distance. He was the previous state record holder for 1,000m and 3,000m, as well as also having a great range over 10km events and boasting a very impressive 10km personal best of 29:40 at the Launceston ten in 2009, the same year he was third in the Burnie Ten. When Grant is not running, he is a mechanic at the RACT and instead of having a regular cat or dog for a pet, he has a wallaby called Rooby. He is the current record holder for the number of wins at a City to Casino and he has won this race an impressive 8 times throughout his career. We talk about these races, injuries he has suffered, what the future for athletics at grassroots level is and life in general. Grant is one of Tassie’s best ever distance runners and has had a career to be proud of.

With tourism businesses across the State gearing up for re-opening, initially for Tasmanian's, and soon for interstate visitors, we thought it would be insightful to hear the lived experience of re-opening for a couple of prominent tourism operators with very different types of businesses. Chief Operating Officer of RACT Destinations, Andrew Paynter, speaks on the first day of his businesses’ reopening about his team’s journey, why he believes his team is coming out of COVID-19 stronger and more connected and how the business is planning for a busy weekend ahead. RACT Destinations operate some of Tasmania's most iconic visitor experiences, including Freycinet Lodge, Strahan Village, Gordon River Cruises and the Cradle Mountain Hotel. Tara Howell is Director of Blue Derby Pods Ride, a premium mountain biking experience in Derby. Tara is the Convener of the new Tasmanian Mountain Biking Network, and was recently elected to the TICT Board. Tara talks through how she has expertly managed her marketing and social media during lock-down and is now welcoming Tasmanian's to her business over the next six weeks.
