During the 2023 New Yorker Festival, three legendary staff writers got together to discuss the craft of investigative journalism: digging for information like detectives, and then presenting it in a way to rival the best thrillers. For each of these writers, the “bad guy” —whose actions usually set the story in motion – needs to be presented in three dimensions; trusting the reader to grapple with that person's perspective is key to an engrossing story. “I look at these big, boring issues often, like economic inequality or corruption in politics,” Jane Mayer says. “You take a subject like campaign finance – the Citizens United decision and how it's corrupted politics. If you can find somebody like [Charles or David] Koch and explain there actually was a billionaire behind so much of this, and he has a story, and he has a family, and there are always screwed-up fathers and sons involved in these families. . . . It means that you're able to explain the ethical choices people make.” Mayer is best known for her book “Dark Money,” about the Koch brothers; David Grann wrote “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Wager,” both best-sellers; and Patrick Radden Keefe covered the Sackler family's opioid dynasty in “Empire of Pain,” and a murder during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in “Say Nothing.” They were joined by their editor, The New Yorker's Daniel Zalewski.

Hi Guys, welcome back to TV Reload. Thank you for clicking or downloading on today's episode with Samantha Armatige. The host of Farmer Wants a Wife 2024 which starts on Sunday night at 7:30 on Channel on Seven. Samantha Armytage is an Australian journalist and television presenter. Sam was previously co-host of the Seven Network's breakfast television program Sunrise from 2013 to 2021 alongside David Koch. Only a few years ago Samantha was slowly integrated into the much loved reality series and last year her inclusion as full time host saw the show rise 16% in its category. This season thousands of eligible women from all around Australia applied to meet our farmers and after a series of speed dates in the Hunter Valley, the farmers will choose their top five ladies to invite back to the farm. The ladies will be shown the lay of the land, participate in farm work and go on a series of spectacular dates before the farmers determine if there is enough chemistry to spark a lifelong connection. During the first two episodes, the five farmers for the 2024 season — Bert, Dean, Dustin, Joe and Tom — must choose five out of their eight ladies to return to their farms across Australia. This leaves a total of 15 women, who had been hoping to find love, having to head home before their farmer journey can properly begin. It is pretty brutal but I know you guys will love it. Samantha reveals her thoughts about the media landscape and if she has closed the door on her journalistic career. We will unpack the new Farmers and find out of the Victoria Framer Tom is too young to be looking for a wife? You will get some interesting insights into Samatha's move out of Sydney and what she thinks of the workforce for women in a post covid world. I am also delighted to hear what Samantha thinks of me pitching Farmer Dave from Big Brother and if it is time we see a queer farmer? There is so much to unpack with Samantha. So sit back and relax as we unpack the world of Farmer Wants a Wife?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This explosive episode of "Busted Pencils" confronts the pernicious influence of Charles and David Koch on the American public education system through their organization, "Americans for Prosperity" Despite their name, their interests are in anything BUT prosperity for all Americans. With their deep pockets and right-wing ideology, the Koch brothers have embarked on a relentless campaign to dismantle public schooling, favoring a future where education serves the interests of profit over people. Hosts Dr. Tim Slekar and Dr. Johnny Lupinacci peel back the layers of this orchestrated attack, revealing how the Koch network has used its vast resources to promote charter schools, voucher programs, and a market-driven model of education that starkly undermines the principles of equity and democracy. Listeners are guided through the intricate maze of the Kochs' strategic investments in political advocacy, policy formulation, and public opinion manipulation, showcasing the wide-reaching consequences of their actions for students, teachers, and communities. The episode not only critiques the Kochs' agenda but also highlights the broader right-wing movement's efforts to privatize public goods, spotlighting the insidious trend toward commodifying education.
She's one of the most well known women on Australian TV, and yet, as she marks three years on air as the co-host of Sunrise, Natalie Barr reveals she was initially reluctant to accept the job and found herself second-guessing whether she was right for the role. She also opens up about establishing an on-air rapport with Matt Shirvington after the departure of long time co-host David Koch, tuning out the white noise of social media - and how she handles speculation about the supposed tension between her and her female colleagues. “Whatever a catfight is, I can't remember any in the Sunrise office,” she tells Something To Talk About. At 55, she is feeling more confident than ever – even if her inner Catholic school girl fears it might be “bragging” to admit it. But it's also a chapter of her life that has seen her two sons both move out of home, leaving Natalie and her husband adjusting to being empty-nesters. See more of Natalie Barr weekdays on Sunrise on Channel 7 and 7Plus. While Something To Talk About takes a break, we are revisiting some of the most candid and revealing moments from the almost 50 guests who have joined us in conversation on this podcast over the past year. Even at a time when more taboos are being broken than ever before, the topic of money is still not considered to be polite dinner-table conversation. But while gloating about wealth or prying into the salary of a relative or friend is one thing, a wider discussion around financial security and literacy is something more of us are growing comfortable with – particularly women. When Jackie O sat down in conversation with Something To Talk About in May, she was asked about her decision to show up in person at an auction to buy her luxurious new home. “I hate showing off wealth,” she explained, “but at the same time, I shouldn't be embarrassed by it.” It was an exchange that ignited countless headlines and prompted many follow-up conversations about how Jackie O has become an example of a woman feeling comfortable about her earning power. Michelle Bridge later told Something To Talk About how Jackie had inspired her to also be more upfront and proud of the empire she has built. And as somebody who works with women's community shelters, Michelle is also mindful of the importance of women taking control of their finances, particularly given women over 55 are the fastest-growing demographic of homeless people in Australia. Sally Obermeder, meanwhile, was also very open about the highs and lows of her path to launching a successful business, including the hard-won lessons she and her co-founder sister learnt along the way. Despite starting her career as a finance reporter, Sally was also very honest about the steep learning curve she embarked on to attain financial literacy. And given we are in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, self-described finance nerd David Koch shared the advice he would give to those who want to build a secure future in challenging times. And then there was Sarah Wilson, who also generated headlines across the country when she explained how and why she has stopped buying things, and issued a friendly challenge to her fellow Australians to discover the stress-free joys in curbing our consumption. Hear the full conversation with each of the five guests featured in this episode here: Listen to Jackie O here. Listen to Sally Obermeder here. Listen to David Koch here. Listen to Michelle Bridges here. Listen to Sarah Wilson here. Did you know that Koch Corporation is the second largest private business in the United States? That Fred Koch, father of David Koch, helped to found the John Birch Society? That Koch is one of the largest corporate lobbying entities in America. That their belief is libertarianism is a destructive ideology that undermines government functioning? That they have been promoting climate science denial for decades? What about that the way the organization functions it resembles a corporate cult? Koch is funding “free speech” that is causing so much dissention and hate speech. This was one of the most important interviews I have ever conducted.
