Wānaka residents are objecting to an application for a 24-hour McDonalds. But a petition organised by locals says it would go against the town's "core community values" - citing health, wellness and a beautiful natural environment.  Wānaka Chamber of Commerce general manager Glenn Peat says the proposal presents both opportunities and challenges for the town, which wants to grow economically while preserving its unique character. Peat and petition organiser Sarah Morrison spoke to Corin Dann.

BETTENDORF WRITER HONORED AT HOLLYWOOD AWARDS EVENT Winning Story Featured in New Release Bettendorf, Iowa writer David Hankins is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other winning writers and twelve winning artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 28th. His story, "Death and the Taxman," is illustrated by Sarah Morrison of Malden, Massachusetts who is an Illustrators of the Future winner herself. The story and illustration, along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 which is officially released on May 2nd. David Hankins writes from the thriving cornfields of Iowa where he lives with his wife, daughter, and two dragons disguised as cats. His writing journey began in the oral tradition of convincing his daughter to Go To Sleep with inventive stories. That usually backfired. After years of Just One More Story, David began transcribing his midnight ramblings in an attempt to keep his storylines straight. Children are ruthless in identifying mistakes in fairy tales. David writes lighthearted speculative fiction because that's what he loves to read and—this is the important bit—there's not nearly enough humor in the world. David aims to change that, one story at a time. David joined the US Army after college and, through some glitch in the bureaucracy, convinced Uncle Sam to fund his wanderlust for twenty years. He has lived in and traveled through much of Europe, central Asia, and the United States. Now that he's retired from the Army, David devotes his time to his passions of writing, traveling with his family, and finding new ways to pay his mortgage. “Death and the Taxman” was born as the writing community mourned the passing of Writers of the Future coordinating judge Dave Farland. Death is the ultimate rigged game, one that the Grim Reaper never loses. But what if he did? What if he became human? Would the Grim Reaper cling to life as tenaciously as we do? Inspired by the witty and sarcastic styles of Sir Terry Pratchett and Jim Butcher--and by an IRS audit he hopes never to repeat--David wrote this story hoping to bring laughter in a time of grief. To any tax auditors reading this: you are lovely people. Please don't audit David again. He hopes you enjoy “Death and the Taxman. The Writers of the Future Award is the genre's most prestigious award of its kind and has now become the largest, most successful, and demonstrably most influential vehicle for budding creative talent in the world of speculative fiction. Cyber warfare expert Dr Sarah Morrison: Getting into the mind of a threat actor

Women on Boards I Making it Real

To be good at cyber security you need to be able to think like a threat actor. That's according to state-based cyber warfare expert Dr Sarah Morrison, who has herself embedded herself for the last 20 years in the technology and cybersecurity industry.  No surprise then that Sarah is always the one at dinner parties reminding people to use secure passwords and update their anti-malware. What is more of a surprise is that Sarah - who has no less than seven qualifications in the area of criminology, investigation & intelligence and cyber security including a PhD in Russian Information Operations - left school in Year 10 to get an office job. As she tells Claire Braund in this podcast, “I fell in love with computers around five when my brother won one and brought it home. At school we didn't get to really use computers, but getting an admin job I got to use one!” A few years later a book on criminology piqued Sarah's interest so she went back to school and on to study the subject at University of Western Sydney. Sarah works across the government, banking and higher education sector. More recently she has stepped into the cyber consulting and advisory arena in ASX and other organisations. She was recently appointed to a WOB Advertised advisory committee in the higher education sector because of her very specific cyber skills. In this podcast Sarah talks about how she keeps in with the fast-moving space of cyber security and intelligence, the threat of large-scale disinformation campaigns and the role of AI and why boards need to put cybersecurity “front and centre”. Today on the show I am sharing a conversation that I had earlier this summer with my friend  Sarah Morrison. Her story is one that I’ve been dying to share with you guys and here’s why. She went from being a married homeschooled mama of 5 to becoming a divorced single mom. God brought someone new into her life and now she’s remarried with six kids! Not only that, she’s currently the full time working parent and her husband Cole is the primary care giver (aka the stay at home dad) for their family. In this episode we talk about God’s redemption song through her story, how and why Cole (that’s her husband) became a stay at home dad, including their biblical conclusion, logistics and her Sarah’s mindset struggles and shift  about their role reversal. Spoiler alert, this role is a God sized dream come true for Cole and he treats it like it’s his job. Sarah is a powerhouse and seriously one of my favorite people I’ve ever met through the internet, although, we’ve also met in person. She’s passionate about helping women rebuild after a divorce and loves to help women make a life shift. She’s also a coach with Click Funnels and Create Your Laptop Life, you’ll hear us talk about both of those. Gals, if you are riding the shame train about working, getting push back from your family & friends or really need a pep talk to encourage you to run the race the Lord has given you in. You’re going to love this episode. Alright, let’s dive in. Scripture referenced: Proverbs 31:11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, he will have no lack of gain. Links mentioned in this episode. The Walled Wife (Red Hen Press) A woman is buried so a church will rise. Nicelle Davis’ The Walled Wife unearths from the long-standing text “The Ballad of the Walled-up Wife,” a host of issues that continue to plague women in the contemporary world: the woman’s body as sacrifice; the woman’s body as tender or currency; the woman’s body as disposable; the woman’s body as property; the woman’s body as aesthetic object; the woman’s body unsafe in the world she must inhabit, and in the hands of the people she loves. By unearthing “this fucked-up story,” found in a centuries-old folktale (The Ballad of the Walled-Up Wife) Nicelle Davis’ poems remind us that narratives, like the individuals and cultures that produce them, are imperfect structures. However, through her intelligent and effective use of craft and voice, and the heartbreaking vulnerability with which she engages the perspectives within and without the story, Davis avoids simple replication; she does not “rebuild a corrupt structure.” Rather, she exhibits in The Walled Wife the powerful and expansive possibilities of narrative. This collection makes space (in the narrative, and thus in the reader, and thus in the culture) for so much—for remorse from the builder, for sorrow from the husband, but mostly for this sacrificed woman to be angry, to feel betrayed, to be avenged, to tend to her inner life in the hours of her death, to speak her truth, and insist on her humanity. These poems allow the wife to mourn her stolen life, and as we mourn with her, they enrich our possibilities for empowerment and empathy in the narratives of our lives.  A poetry reading for ugly bridesmaid dresses. Poetry readings, refreshments, photo ops, and an ugly bridesmaid contest competition. Moderated by Juicee Courture.  Nicelle Davis is a California poet, collaborator, and performance artist who walks the desert with her son J.J. in search of owl pellets and rattlesnake skins.
