On this weeks program Chris talks to Mark Donnellon from Streets People Love Hobart about how they created the group, what actions they've taken since December 2024, how the campaign grew from passionate debate about improving Collins Street, showing community support for active transport in nipuluna Hobart, being guided by their fun-loving mascot, Perci the Platypus, supporting Hobart City Councils Argyle and Campbell Street bicycle connections and getting people involved with a public meeting about the Collins Street improvement trial on Tuesday 25 March at 5.30pm at City Hall, 57-63 Macquarie Street.Local news includes the Victoria Parliament finally tabling the final report of the inquiry into vulnerable road users that was tabled in the Legislative Assembly last year, you can read the report here, especially Recommendation 31: 'The Department of Transport and Planning continue to promote the installation of protected bike lanes in inner and middle Melbourne'. Most of the recommendations are supported 'in principle' which is fairly lukewarm response to be honest. Critical Mass Boroondara is coming up on Friday 28 March, Yarra and Boroondara need a new river crossing! Infrastructure Victoria has just released their 30 year plan, and it supports a cycling link from the city through to the Hawthorn - Box Hill trail. From investing his paper route money in term deposits when he was nine years old, to racing the two kilometres from one end of Collins Street to the other to submit a handwritten RBA bond tender, to running a market-beating income fund for more than 20 years, Yarra Capital Management's Roy Keenan has seen it all in his 40 years in fixed income. It is this broad experience and love for fixed income that makes Keenan such an interesting person to talk to, particularly given the world as we find it today. There's a new regime taking shape in the US, the promises of which will need to be funded by new paper, locally we have state governments in trouble (none more so than Victoria, where Keenan was at the coalface last time it was broke), whilst the energy transition and other major investment themes are creating opportunities. Making sense of it all is always the key, but when you have four decades of experience you have learnt when to use your head and when to pay attention to your gut. "I think that the head tells you to put the trade on. I think the gut is the warning signal that something doesn't feel right and therefore instead of taking that trade off quickly, you might just let it run a little bit longer to see how it will play out," he says. So, which themes are dominating Keenan's head space and innards today? Be sure to listen to the podcast for insights on the world's biggest and most liquid markets, as well as some war stories from Keenan's 40 years in the market.

This week we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the West Papua Office in Docklands - the only office in the world housing members of the West Papuan transitional government. There you will find its Foreign Affairs minister, Jacob Rumbiak, who has been in the struggle for his land's liberation since he was a young boy and who spent 10 years in prison for his threat to colonial Indonesia as an academic. Jacob came to Australia in 1999. There in the office you will also find Louise Byrne: general dogsbody and veteran of the Free West Timor movement. Louise says that one of the biggest advocacy purposes of the office is to encourage Australia to support the United Nations to conduct a fact-finding mission to West Papua. Close to 100 sovereign nations have so far pledged support for this effort. The West Papuan freedom movement claims colonial Indonesia carries out cultural genocide against its people and exploits its rich resources (have you ever heard of Grasberg mine?..). Indonesia claims West Papua to be its own, from land, to sea and sky. With the support of the West Papua Rent Collective, convened by our very own Joe Toscano, the West Papuan community here in Melbourne is able to conduct its work, hold events and educate us on its liberation movement. They work extremely hard. Jacob claims the office has given the movement a clearer direction, has made it real and given them Big Hope. We are so pleased to support the office and encourage you to attend its Open Day on Sunday August 4th, 838 Collins Street, Docklands. Entry via rear of the building. 1pm lunch kickoff. It is important we educate ourselves on the history of our close neighbour and we are honoured to welcome Jacob and Louise to the show this week. Nordic-inspired Freyja, (the golden teared goddess of Norse mythology) the glorious two-level restaurant on Collins Street was the last piece in Soren Trampedach's puzzle to bring people together to work and play in his Work Club Global human eco-system. It also stands alone as a statement restaurant headed in the kitchen by Michelin star chef Jae Bang. For Jae, the Nordic approach to Australian cuisine that informs Freyja's style isn't just about the food, although he is using traditional and ancient culinary methods such as pickling, curing, smoking, preserving, and lacto-fermenting. For Bang, it is also about harnessing the Nordic approach to work-life balance. If you're not sure what that might look like, we go into it in quite a lot of depth in the following conversation. I first met Jae when I wrote about Freyja in 2022 and then had an incredible degustation in the dining room with its heritage brick walls, vast Gothic cathedral windows and curvaceous slatted timber ceiling - a nod to the boats of Nordic maritime history. This time we went downstairs into one of the quieter meeting spaces and sat at a huge timber table made with the boards of an ancient Nordic ship. We talked work life balance, food, Jae's absolutely peripatetic and adventurous formation years from Seoul to Osaka to New York to Catalonia to Stavanger and then Melbourne. We also talked about his upcoming 4 Hands dinner he and visiting French chef, Hugo Souchet will be cooking over three nights at Frejya. Hugo is chef de cuisine at Les Prés d'Eugénie, Michel Guerard's restaurant which has retained its three Michelin stars since 1977. The pair will put up 6 courses as well as showcasing Sturia Caviar and French champagne, Pernet et Pernet. These dinners are next week on the 8th, 9th and 10th of February, so as soon as youhave listened to this episode, jump on the Freyja restaurant site and book your spot.

I don't know about you, but the luxury hotel world feels like another dimension to me; a glamourous, celebrity-filled world. Then there are the people behind the scenes who make it all happen. My only insight into their world is through White Lotus, The Night Manager and The Grand Budapest Hotel, which are documentaries, right? I was invited to a glorious Melbourne Cup Day Champagne breakfast at The Westin in Collins Street and I was welcomed into a group of General Managers and other hotel industry people who were swapping stories of their various posts around the world. I inhaled that. Fascinating. I met SJ in that group and when I said what I did, she told me I absolutely must talk to Justin Dingle-Garciyya. So I did. Justin has travelled the world as a chef, although he originally thought he would be a professional baseball player. When that didn't pan out, he found himself in the kitchen and he loved it. Inspired by the books he read by the likes of Marco Pierre White and Raymond Blanc, he propelled himself on a career trajectory that led to top chef and culinary director roles in luxury hotels. And now, with all that in mind he reckons he has a book in him too. It won't be a cookbook though, it'll be tales of all he has seen in hotels across the globe. I think, why stop at a book, this was a cinematic ride of a conversation and totally up there with the 'documentaries' on which I based my original impression of hotel life. For now, Justin is involved with opening The Standard, Melbourne, in Fitzroy, the first of the LA-based group's Australian hotels.

Nicole grew up in a French speaking household with her mother who had come to Australia from Paris in the 1950s, met Nicole's dad and settled here. It was a wonderful and unusual childhood not just because of the French influence. Nicole's father and grandfather were in the hotel business and owned the Ress Oriental Hotel in Collins Street Melbourne. When her mother saw the hotel she exclaimed to Nicole's father, with the plane trees and the architecture it looked like Paris, all it was missing were the tables and chairs on the terrasse on the street. So Nicole's father applied for a permit to have the outdoor tables and he then coined the phrase, "the Paris end of Collins Street" which has stuck to that part of Melbourne to this day!In this podcast chat we hear of Nicole's extraordinary life with two cultures and two countries in her heart. I was fascinated to hear of her experiences living in the city hotel in Melbourne with the Treasury Gardens as her back yard. As she grew up in this environment with guests like Maurice Chevalier staying at the hotel, she felt both French and Australian.  I loved her stories of times she visited Paris and France with her family. Especially the times she had experiences with extraordinary chefs and famous wine houses that most of us can only dream about! My favourite part of this podcast chat with Nicole is how she described her perfect French day. I have asked that question 90 times before, but this is the first time that a guest has taken me on a tour for the day where I could close my eyes and actually imagine myself there as Nicole walked me through one exquisite experience after another. She picked me as a cassis sorbet lover as we sat virtually under the orange trees in a Provence village looking out over the countryside to the Mediterranean in the distance. In this episode, I'm chatting with Dr. Tim Jarvis, director of Fullers Bookshop, about taking over the 103-year-old bookshop, local authors, what to see around Hobart, and books!Fullers Bookshop was established in 1920, by W. E. (Bill) Fuller, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. In 1961 the shop was taken over by Cedric and Ian Pearce, famous not only as booksellers but also as jazz musicians. In 1980, when Cedric became ill, the shop was purchased by Ian Drinkwater. Ian moved Fullers to Murray St in 1981.Clive Tilsley bought Fullers in 1982 and 1992 and moved the bookshop back to Collins Street. In 1996 the Afterword Café was established on the mezzanine level of the shop – this moved Fullers onto another level of business. In 2001, Fullers opened a second shop in Launceston in the north of the state, where Clive spent 13 years establishing the brand in a very competitive book-buying market. In 2009 the Hobart shop moved again – up the road to a bright new space (with a fabulous view of the mountain). In 2014, Fullers sold its Launceston shop, and at the same time, Clive moved back to Hobart. In the 30 years under Clive's guidance, Fullers has confirmed its status as a leading bookseller in Tasmania and a fundamental component of the cultural landscape of the state. In 2021 Tim Jarvis took over ownership, steering the bookshop through the pandemic, and continuing the tradition of Fullers Bookshop being a hub of the community, offering a wide range of author events, readings, books clubs, and publishing. Fullers BookshopFullers Bookshop Book ClubRichard FlanaganJames DryburghPrue BattenBob Brown FoundationPete HayLucinda Wine BarDier Makr RestaurantThe Little Lotus Vegan and Vegetarian RestaurantMONASunbear CoffeeThe Internet Is Not What You Think It Is, Justin E. Thanks also to Kerr Capital supporters of the show.Okay, welcome to another edition of Small Business Banter. Really pleased to have in today with us, Martin Ginnane, from Ginnane & Associates. Martin will tell you a lot more about what he's done in a few minutes, but I just wanted to cover off some of the highlights. He's principally responsible for advising on retail development, place making and brand activation. He's done a lot of work in both big cities and regional areas. He's a member of the Small Business Ministerial Council, and he's really a Retail Industry Specialist here in Victoria. And prior to that, he was the Deputy Managing Director of Downtown Duty-Free. Firstly, welcome in today, Martin. Martin Ginnane: Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be here. Michael: And for today's discussion with Martin, we're going to be talking about regional renewal, making the most of retail, attracting investment, and lessons learned from some of the major initiatives. Martin was involved in Melbourne and now has been working with regional Victoria locations in Camperdown Warrnambool and Ballarat. So we're looking forward to that. But Martin, if you could, just give us a couple of minutes in your background so the listeners are in sync with where you come from and what you do. Over to you.Martin: Thank you, Michael. I'm fortunate enough to have had a very varied background, but all around the retail sector. Born in Melbourne many, many years ago. I was raised in Melbourne. I spent 20 years in Sydney where I started my retail career with companies such as Angus and Coote, The Jeweler's and Diamond Traders, which was part of then of the Hooker Corporation owned by the illustrious George Herscu. And then was poached to join Downtown Duty Free in the days when Duty Free was a big business. We had Melbourne Airport, Brisbane Airport, Sydney Airport, and about 15 off-airport stores. So, at about 6,000 staff in those days. I joined there as Deputy Managing Director. And after six years, we were taken over by Swiss Air Company. I was retrenched and thought, well, I'll come back home to Melbourne. I came back to Melbourne and was appointed as the Victorian government's first Retail Industry Specialist at a time when Melbourne in particular had vacancy rates as high as 17 to 18%. I was appointed under the Kennett government for 12 months and ended up staying there for 17 years. And during that period, I work mainly on investment attraction for the CBD, an original advisor on the Melbourne Fashion Festival for the state government up until I departed 10 years ago to establish my own business, Ginnane & Associates.Michael: Excellent. So, from that background, you know a lot about foot traffic. So I'm looking forward to exploring the work that you've been doing. I mean, drawing on that rich experience, but also relating it to what you've been doing in some of the regional parts of Victoria. So, I just wanted to start off with a quote from your website, "Global Cities of significance all have one thing in common, a strong and vibrant, culturally diverse heart that encourages people to live, experience, participate and claim ownership of their location. At the heart of these cities, is a unique offering that makes them stand out from the sameness that is making so many cities bland and boring. Retail strength, placemaking and events are the economic backbone of all successful global cities and large residential developments." That's straight from your website. It was very powerful. I'm going to ask you about how regional towns and regional cities in Australia can take something from that. I'm assuming it applies across towns as well as cities.Martin: Most definitely, Michael, it does. It's a big statement, and it's a strong statement and it's one that I'm thinking actually of using on every single presentation that I do to whether be commercial or private government, particularly in this day and age. It came from the fact that a lot of things were happening in the retail sector prior to COVID. We can all say that COVID caused it, but there are massive changes happening prior. One of the things that was driving this belief that I have in that statement is that sameness was happening all around the world. So you could walk down in Collins Street, you could walk down all the major cities, and they were taken over now by the mega giants, the Louis Vuitton's, the Gucci's, the Prada's, who roll out their international branding twice a year. So, you can walk down these streets and look in the windows and you'll see the same thing. The only time that you'll notice if you'll look up and you'll see St Paul or St Patrick's Cathedral or Notre Dame and you'll think I'm not in Melbourne, I'm in Paris. So seriously, that's how bad retail was getting.Michael: They'd taken that McDonald's consistency of product just a little bit too far with their retail.Martin: Yeah, and I call it masstige rather than prestige. It has got to the point where the big players are having to buy smaller boutique operations now to make themselves unique and so-called exclusive again because of the success and over success of some of those global brands.Michael: Too much commoditization of a once glorious brand. Martin: Exactly. So, one of the things that comes out of this is the desire to experience something that is different and unique. One of my other sayings is, "luxury to me is about someone says where did you find that as opposed to where did you buy it." Because you can buy anything these days. If you've got the money, you can buy something at the top. When within 18 months it'll be at H&M or probably far less than that, or how you can buy the copy of it. But the wonderful discovery, finding something, whether it's a great old book or pre-love tie or whatever the case may be. So, jumping back into your question. This is where retail cities and towns across Australia had the upper hand. It is really, really their opportunity to shine. We can discuss that as we go along. Michael: Yeah. Look, I think we ought to jump straight into that. The renewal or the potential renewal of the local shopping strip. I mean, you're doing some work recently, I think, in Ballarat, which got some magnificent real estate and grand streets. But what would you take to those places to make that local shopping strip vital and exciting for the locals? I'm assuming we're not going to have potentially some of those big international luxury brands.Martin: Nor do you want them. But Michael, what I think is the scenario is that it's going to be driven by two things. You've got to have an appetite by the local government. You've got to have an appetite by the council. For example, I just almost finished four years work with the City of Warrnambool on the redevelopment of Liebig Street. So they had a counselor at the time who had a vision to say to themselves and their constituents, "If we don't do something with this beautiful old big wide street, it is falling into such disrepair that we are losing out to the new shopping centers that are opening and almost circling like a western movie with the wagon train circling the town." Michael: Right. And choking it off.Martin: And choking it off. Now, this scenario with success for any regional town or major strip is to make sure that they are no longer just selling stuff. I use the difference between a product and an NSA stuff. This is not being derogatory to any of the brands that are in the shopping centers around regional cities. And those shopping centers do offer convenience. If it's pouring with rain, a young mother can drive in or a young father can drive in. Unload the baby. It's dry. They are not going to get wet. But although found in those shopping centers is stuff. They'll find inexpensive football socks for the kids which they need because they grow so quickly. They'll find a dress. They might find a cheap, inexpensive set of cabinets or something for their bedroom. That's fine. When they come into Warrnambool or when they come into Ballarat or when they come in to Camperdown, it's about wanting to come into town because that is where they are going to experience and find things that are different and unique. They are going to be able to engage with the community in a much nicer environment, wider footpaths, planting, better awnings, easier parking. All those things make for an environment that will make regional cities and towns continue to thrive.Michael: Right. So Warrnambool, Ballarat, other regional towns around Australia, the history is there. But you talked about having local councilors being a big part of the equation they need to support. What about landlords? I mean, some of these buildings are grand and make for beautiful retail or food or whatever. But the older they get, the harder they are to maintain, or the costly they are to maintain.Martin: You can see examples not just in regional towns. You can see examples on Chapel Street under the Council of Stonnington on Glenferrie Road in many, many areas. One of the advantages that live shopping centers have is that every so many years, your store must be refurbished. You must meet the guidelines of the shopping center and so forth. So while that creates a great Disneyland feel and a very, very nice, safe environment and a pleasurable environment where we're almost craving. Well, we are craving something that's a bit more earthy and a bit more real.Warrnambool, and I know the City of Ballarat as well. Warrnambool successfully offered restoration grants for property owners during the redevelopment program. The City of Warrnambool got that funding from federal state and from their own coffers. So three lots of funding. I believe the City of Ballarat has done the same for the renewal of the mall. I believe both cities are offering grants and financial assistance to restore and renew these heritage buildings.Michael: Right. So assuming the landlord takes advantage, then it does really open up the opportunities for smaller retail operators, whether they be food or whether they are quirky retail, to start something.Martin: Michael, the exciting thing is when you walk down the streets of these areas now is that you are seeing young people. You are seeing in Warrnambool there's, I think, three whiskey bars. There's a gin bar. These are all being run by young people who were born and raised in Warrnambool. Evidently, you do need to either be born there or marry somebody. And if you marry somebody, you need to be married for 20 years before you are classed as a true business owner.Michael: Before you get your stamp. Yeah.Martin: Even though I've been there a lot, I still don't think I'm a local. But they are coming back to town. They are seeing opportunities to come back to their town and make a living for themselves and their families. There's new housing estates being built in big numbers around these large and medium-sized regional cities. And these people come in many ways, quite often from urban environments, and they still want to live the same way. They want to be able to go out to a whiskey bar. Well, they want to be out to buy some nice cheese and some nice bread. Michael: Yeah. And in today's edition of Small Business Banter, I'm talking with Martin Ginnane from Ginnane & Associates. Yeah, that's a trend that we talk about all the time on Small Business Banter. The movement back from CBD areas, whether it be Sydney or other states and capitals, and this reinvigoration of towns and those people bringing with them some of their experiences. There's no question me, Melbourne and Sydney and Brisbane and Adelaide have some incredible innovation in food, but it seems to be transplanting now in these regional locations. Is that a result of people just having enough of the city being too expensive to run businesses? What are your thoughts on why this is happening?Martin: I think, Michael, you are spot on it. But it's a combination of all those things. It's a combination of perhaps the over success that large cities have had in terms of urbanization, particularly Melbourne, in the last eight to ten years. Massive increase of student population, which we see the massive contribution they've given to the economy, particularly as I haven't been here for the last 12 months. It's a combination of all those things. People want to not necessarily escape, they just want to experience something, whether they are moving permanently or whether they are visiting. The other thing that's happening, of course, is that the ability. I know someone in particular who's going to be working. He stays in Ballarat but is working from Melbourne firm, and then you need to go to Melbourne that twice a week. So all that flexibility is something five years ago we didn't have.Michael: Yeah, I think you made a comment earlier about not what you bought, where you bought it or you found it. You know, I live down the Bellarine Peninsula. My office is in Queenscliff. Well, it's fascinating every day to walk through that street and what it might be and see the gin bars and the distilleries. Not so much in Queenscliff, but certainly in other places, it's booming. It's a combination of that vigor and energy. If you were to take a view of what the next town that wants to reinvigorate their retail strip, the historical retail strip, what are the key that we've talked about to support to restore buildings? I guess we need landlords to come onboard and buy into the vision, and the small business operators. What else or who else is needed to really kick start getting these places? Because people are traveling more and more through regional Australia because you can't go elsewhere. So the opportunities would seem to be there if you've got an interesting offer.Martin: The LGA, the Local Government Authority, has to have the passion. And the counselors, the CEO, have to have a dream of what that town could be. In many eyes, retail doesn't play a part. Retail services and hospitality don't really play a part in local government plans. They may have a four-year strategy for economic development, but retail and services don't normally play a big part in it. So, in order for what you've just said, the other players, the landlords, the small business operators, the potential investors. You have to know that you are moving into an area or considering to move into an area where a council is hungry for your business and is keen to get it.I'm just about to deliver an investment attraction to the opportunity in Warrnambool where we are inviting some of the big commercial real estate agents down to have a look at what the area has to offer. How it's grown, how it's changed. Not necessarily to get any big players down but for them to be able to put Warrnambool in their head for property investors, but also for businesses that might be looking to expand. Michael: So you're saying that retail and retail services aren't really a driver for the LGAs. Is that it?Martin: No. I'm not saying that with all of them, but with a lot of them it's very much... When I started originally with the state capital which was over 20 years ago. I remember having a director said to me, "But Martin, why are we even playing in this space? One shop closes, another shop opens." It's not as simple as that. It's a scenario where council needs to lead the way in a vision of what they want the city to be. And when I say retailer, not necessarily just talking about selling more stuff. A good regional town, a good regional city, should attract people. It should attract its own people. It should attract visitors. But it should attract them for a multitude of reasons. Retail, food, beverage is one of the biggest drivers in today's market.Michael: Absolutely. It is. And it's certainly an area for further discussion. But if you look around, I spend a lot of time in traveling in regional Victoria. I go a long way for a good bakery, a good beer, a good pizza. So, what are the components for a good contemporary retail strip in any given town? What must you have to get people to choose that town over another town? Martin: You have to have two things. You have to have a business model that appeals to the locals, and you also have to have a business model that will appeal to the visitors. Now, I spent a lot of time as a young boy, which was a long time ago in Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, and I remember how it was and I see how it is now. However, for all the success, Daylesford in particular is still very much a weakened economy. Because driven by everything that appeals to the tourist. You must maintain an offering that appeals to your local residents as well. So you need, as you just said, a good pizza joint which Warrnambool has about two and Ballarat has about six. You need a really good bottle shop. You need a couple of good pubs. You need a pub that has good live music. You need a good delicatessen. You know, there's one in Warrnambool called Darriwill Farm. It was a retail released by a woman by the name of Lisa Pitkethly. It's the most amazing business. It's got absolutely everything.Michael: I also tried some stores in the city. I didn't know that.Martin: They had one in [inaudible] and they had one in Albert Park, I think, but I think that both are gone. Lisa's got bought out her own business now. But it's that sort of business where you just go there. It's almost like a small Ikea for food and delicatessen. You just go in. You pick up a basket and you buy. The other thing is, do these towns need this as they get to and need to have the services as well? So there's a good banking infrastructure. There's two insurance brokers. There're things like that that help the community.Michael: Yeah. And those communities would think on across the board of growing. So you've got a bigger and more permanent base to build a business around. This idea of investment attraction, it's still a viable model for local government to think about, local councils. It's not just for big cities. Martin: It's essential because big cities have been so badly hurt. The big cities that have relied particularly on government employees, in a big, big way, and international students. I think of Victoria's wonderful campaign they had many years ago with the jigsaw puzzle. And the course CBD of Melbourne, which I'm actively involved in working on their precincts, review work at the moment. But the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle fall on that. So, the students are falling off the table. The tourists are falling off the table. The public servants in town.Michael: I get it. In that investment attraction, I just want to get your thoughts quickly. There's quite a difference between attracting big employers versus attracting new business operators. I'm very passionate about seeing more small business owners. So it's a balance between getting a bigger organization that can employ 20, 50, or 100 people. But also, I think, sometimes the opportunities to attract new and innovative small business operators. We had Carly Flecknoe from the Made the Grampians Way. She's a classic tree changer. This is maybe 30 episodes back. But that's the kind of energy and vigor that I think we need as well as obviously attracting... Not everyone wants to be a business owner, so we need to have a balance. But I sometimes wonder whether small business might get underappreciated as an employment generator. Martin: They certainly never get underappreciated if I'm involved in anything. I've been in small business in different ways on and off for so many years and I know the difficulties of it, but I am so passionate about believing that this is their time to rise. This is really, really their time to rise. They've got access to so much now in terms of they don't need to pay for big advertising. They've got Instagram. They've got everything at their fingertips to grow their business. Michael: Yeah. They got something that's interesting, quirky. They can get people to the destination.Martin: Exactly.Michael: They can build it and they will come. Maybe that's going to come true for some. Martin: Well, that's why we're doing the investment attraction work. It's certainly not to when under no idea that we will attract big brands, but it's about putting the city of Warrnambool and other cities in investors' minds. Michael: Yeah, and really building on the natural advantage, the heritage, the proximity to food, beverage, produce. Martin: And a wonderful life.Michael: And a wonderful life. Yeah. Hey Martin, that is, unfortunately, time up for us today. But that was a really great chat. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and your energy and passion for that reinvigoration and renewal. Keep up the great work and perhaps we will chat another time, but go well.Martin: Thank you, Michael.Michael: Thanks, Martin Ginnane. So that is all for today's episode of Small Business Banter. A number of South Australian medi-hotel workers have been put into isolation after a Victorian man tested positive to COVID-19 a week after arriving home. The man, in his 30s, recently returned to Australia from overseas and undertook hotel quarantine in the Playford Hotel in Adelaide's CBD.He arrived in Victoria and returned to his home in Wollert on May 4, developing symptoms four days later. The Victorian health department said a “full public health response” was underway. He got tested on Monday and returned a positive result on Tuesday. It means the state's run of 74 days without any local coronavirus cases has now been broken. The health department said further tests had been arranged urgently to confirm the diagnosis.“Until then, the department is treating this as a positive case and acting accordingly,” it said on Tuesday.“The individual is being interviewed and exposure sites are being verified.”The man is isolated at home along with his household primary close contacts, who are being interviewed and will be urgently tested. The department said it's working with interstate counterparts to determine the source of infection.South Australian chief public health officer Nicola Spurrier said all medi-hotel staff that worked on the floor where the Victorian man resided were required to isolate until they received a negative COVID-19 result. She said health authorities were investigating “a number of potential hypotheses”, with one of them being that the person was exposed to the virus prior to arriving in Australia and had a longer than normal incubation period.Another option is that the man contracted the virus while quarantining.“We know that is possible in some people, that they have a long incubation period longer than 14 days,” Professor Spurrier said.“(But) people are aware that this (transmission within the hotel) has happened in other hotels so this is obviously right at the top of our minds. She said the Victorian man returned negative results to all coronavirus tests conducted during his quarantine, but confirmed he was in a room adjacent to a separate confirmed case who tested positive on day 9 of their isolation. That infected person was transferred from the Playford Hotel to the state's dedicated COVID-19 positive facility at Tom's Court. However, Professor Spurrier said there was a possibility the virus was transmitted during that time. She added there were no breaches at the hotel after CCTV footage was reviewed, suggesting the hotel's ventilation in the passageway could have played a part.“We will know what the genomic make up will be in the person who is still in Tom's Court… then we'll be able match that up and see.“Once we have the genomics back, things will be much clearer.”Professor Spurrier said she did not believe the man was infectious while in South Australia after he left hotel quarantine. It comes after employees at a Melbourne CBD health business were sent home on Tuesday morning as a precaution, following a COVID-19 scare, the Herald Sun reports. The workers at Citadel Health at 459 Collins Street were told to go home and work from there, with the company liaising with the health department, the newspaper said. The health department is urging anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, chills or sweats, or a change in sense of smell or taste, to immediately get tested. The department said on Tuesday it would release a list of potential exposure sites once they were verified.More than 8000 vaccine doses were administered in Victoria on Monday and almost 13,000 COVID-19 test results were received. This latest incident comes after two months after a man who contracted the virus in Perth hotel quarantine and flew home to Melbourne while unknowingly infectious.Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley confirmed the man contracted the virus while quarantining at the Mercure Hotel in Perth, where he stayed for 14 days.He was notified by authorities i...

In this episode, I'll answer the most interesting questions I received since recording the last Career Q&A episode (episode 51). Thank you to everyone who has sent me questions by messaging me on social media, emails, or asking them when I'm invited to speak or present at webinars. It's very important to me to receive these questions and know what issues are on your mind. This way, I can address them via the Q&A episodes and develop future episodes dedicated to the most common concerns you have.   Timestamps: 03:11 - Salary range: I'm often asked to nominate an expected salary in online applications, and it's a mandatory question! Any tips for answering? 06:47 - No promotion: I am doing my job very well, and management likes to keep me where I am. I am stuck in the same position for the last ten years. Does it look like I am missing a strategy on how to communicate with top management? 10:02 - Contract to permanent: I'm in a part-time contract role. My director wants my role to be permanent. It needs to be reviewed by the CEO for approval. I'm not sure how I would continue if it were refused.                                         14:54 - Moving from small to big company: What advice would you give someone who wants to move from a small company to a top tier company? It seems like the big four consulting firms only look for people who worked for the big four. 18:56 - Starting a new role: I recently started a new role. Should I plan for my next move now? 22:45 - Maternity leave: I have just returned from maternity leave and feel like I no longer enjoy my current role. What advice would you give in helping me find a new role? 27:00 - Help with LinkedIn and resume: Can you advise me on how to do a better resume and LinkedIn? And can I send you my resume? 31:12 - Job search during the holidays: What is your advice regarding the holiday season and job hunting? I invited Jacob Thomas to be a guest on the podcast so that they could help me unpack some of the many questions I have about how employers, recruiters, and coaches can better support trans, gender diverse, and nonbinary professionals. And Jacob did not disappoint. This is a much-needed discussion that I hope all my listeners will be interested in for their personal and professional development.   Some of the topics of our conversation include: choosing pronouns, employers and organizations looking for quick wins with what Jacob explains is “pink” dollar the recruitment of queers employees to reach diversity markers issues with dress codes conscious and unconscious bias Jacob's experience in changing their gender marker with their employer and much more. Jacob and I are friends, so the first 12 minutes is a bit of banter, where at least twice, I cried with laughter. If you want to check out the video interview, please go to my YouTube channel, where many of the podcasts are also available in video format.    About our guest, Jacob Thomas: Jacob Thomas is one of Australia's most prominent leaders in sexual orientation and gender identity. About our guest, Geoff Slade: Geoff Slade has worked at the forefront of the Recruitment Industry for over 40 years. He is the Executive Chairman of Slade Group and Transearch Australia International. Geoff is also Chairman of Yellow Folder Research and Skillstream Australia. He is involved in several professional associations and is a Non-Executive Director of Alzheimer's Victoria. A Chartered Management Consultant, Geoff is a past President of the Recruitment & Consulting Services Association (RCSA) - Geoff was, in fact, the founding Chairman of RCSA, the industry's education body.  He was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to the recruitment industry. Many of Australia's leading consultants have worked for and been trained by Geoff at various times in the last three decades. He is also a regular speaker at major industry conferences. Originally creating GW Slade and Associates in 1967, Geoff relocated to London to take Slade to the international market. By 1988 and looking for a change, Geoff sold GW Slade to Blue Arrow (later known as Manpower), a British multinational pursuing international expansion. Geoff took up a newly created role as the Head of Human Resources with Pacific Dunlop. In 1991, Geoff re-launched Slade Group, which quickly moved to the forefront of recruitment in Australia, where it remains today.   About the Reset Your Career program: We can all agree that 2020 has been a complicated year, and maybe you and other professionals like you at some point have lost track of your career goals, your focus, and your ambitions. Most importantly, lockdown, working from home, and unemployment have left many of us disconnected from what employers are now searching for in their new hires. Reset Your Career is a program to kickstart our engines and put you back on track. It was designed by yours truly (yes, that's me, Renata Bernarde, the host of this podcast, career coach, and job hunting expert) to launch or reset your job hunting with a series of masterclasses and a 31-day action plan. It is perfect for professionals and executives in-between jobs in 2020 and hoping to find work in the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors. In a hybrid program that mixes self-guided content and live Zoom gatherings, I will personally take you through the step-by-step of how to reset your career and start getting your job search plans into gear. The Slade Group Team will be collaborating during the workshop, with Geoff Slade giving the welcome address and recruiters from Slade presenting one of the sessions (A Recruiters' Panel). Learn more and register for Reset Your Career.   Timestamps to guide your listening: 05:27 – Massive recruitment drives don't happen anymore, even before COVID-19. 08:37 – Where is the bulk of work available for corporate professionals in their 30s or 40s? 11:01  – What are the knowledge gaps that career coaches like Renata can help with? 18:15 – Other employment crises: What Geoff has seen and learned from previous downturns.  29:32 – Common misunderstandings about the selection process and the role of the recruiter. 37:34 – The importance of networking. So it was a huge honor to have Susan as my guest for this episode, which we recorded live in August 2020 during the 2020 Digital Innovation Forum, organized by the Department of Jobs, Precinct, and Regions of the State of Victoria. When the opportunity arose, I immediately thought of Catherine Ball as a perfect guest for this partnership between The Job Hunting Podcast and #DIF2020. She's full of energy and generous in sharing her ideas, knowledge, and advice. There was very little prompting needed from me!  Catherine is one of the most prolific, efficient professionals and entrepreneurs I know. It now has 2 apps on the market: Mindset (for mental health) and Nerva (for irritable bowel syndrome, which is often triggered by stress and anxiety), but its ambitions are much higher. Mindset Health is a company brand with the vision of managing multiple products addressing chronic conditions with app-based hypnotherapy. Since it's inception in 2018, Mindset has been building a loyal following of fans, like yours truly, has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Tech Crunch, and other news outlets, interested in their digital health innovation and hypnotherapy programs. It has also attracted the interest of investors: In May this year, the startup announced it had raised $1.1 million in funding from investors across the U.S. and Australia. The first half of our conversation was about the startup world: how Alex landed in the world of innovation and entrepreneurialism, about working in startups and building a team of diverse professionals. Then we focused on wellbeing in 2020, what/how and if COVID has influenced Mindset's next steps and growth, and what Alex can tell us to help us perform at our best during the lockdown.  This episode was the first-ever episode of The Job Hunting Podcast recorded LIVE with an audience. It was one of four special episodes designed to be part of the Victorian 2020 Digital Innovation Festival, or #DIF2020. DIF is an initiative of the Department of Jobs, Precincts, and Regions. In Melbourne, we are very proud of our innovation precincts, especially when it comes to health innovation. And Mindset is on a league of its own.    Timestamps to guide your listening: 07:54 – Alex tells us how he became a start-up entrepreneur. 12:36 – His strengths as a leader and as a professional to pursue a career as an entrepreneur. 14.38 – How has it changed having people working with and for him. 16:15 – How Alex chooses people to work with him. 18:09 – The differences in leadership styles: Alex and his brother and Co-Founder Chris. 18:57 – People coming from traditional sectors to work for start-ups. 22:18 – How is a hypnotherapy app perceived in Australia? 24:20 – Statistics of places in the world with most downloads of Mindset App. 25:11 – How hypnotherapy by app works? 27:18 – Has the pandemic changed the future plans for Mindset Health and digital health in general? 30:20 – Mindset growth plans. 33:13 – Tips for job hunters who are feeling very anxious about how to manage their mental health. 37:49 – How Mindset Health apps work and what is the most popular program? 38:50 – What's next for Mindset Health? 41:30 – Where Alex' sees himself 20 years from now. 42:35 – Is it viable to be based in Australia with the kind of start-up business they created? So there is really no excuse – I'm determined to help you! I want you to feel empowered, nail your next job, and have the career you want.   Episode Show Notes In August 2020, I delivered a presentation for over 100 senior executives on how to use LinkedIn more efficiently. The goal was to give these busy corporate leaders, a set of ideas and tools so that they can spend a minimal amount of time on the platform, and still have a LinkedIn presence that's punchy and interesting. So if that is you - that is if you also want to have that visibility, but you don't want, or don't have the time, to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn - Then this podcast episode is for you. The idea is to maximize opportunities and visibility: your LinkedIn profile and activity should position you as you want to be perceived professionally in the job market. This should be the ultimate goal. The organizers received more questions that day then we had the time to answer. So I'm using this podcast episode to address all the questions that we received, and answer them to the best of my ability, considering I'm not a big fan of "one size fits all approach" and believe we should all be looking at finding what is distinctive about our capabilities and skills, and not copy what everyone else is doing on LinkedIn. If you are fairly new to LinkedIn, I would recommend that you start our LinkedIn journey together by first listening to The Job Hunting Podcast Episode No. 34: How to make your LinkedIn profile stand out in 2020. Then come back to this episode and listen to the LinkedIn Q&A. However, if you are familiar with LinkedIn and an active user of the platform, you can go ahead and listen to the Q&A, no problem! I also recommend that you download my LinkedIn Checklist: it will help you get started on LinkedIn or do a quick review on your profile. I'd also love to hear your feedback and opinions. As I mentioned above, I'm not a big fan of the 'one size fits all approach to LinkedIn", so I'd love to hear what has been working for you on LinkedIn. When I'm doing LinkedIn Audits or working one-on-one with my coaching clients I can tailor my recommendations to suit their needs. I love doing this, it's really exciting to position professionals for success. And I see it works for them! And if you are listening to this episode a few months down the track, it's likely I few things may have changed on the platform. So keep that in mind, be smart, and adapt to make sure you are on top of the new trends and tools on LinkedIn. If you want my advice ongoing, join my The Job Hunting Podcast Private Group on Facebook and ask me a question in there. That's where I hang out the most and do my Live Coaching Sessions regularly.   LinkedIn Questions Answered: Timestamps to guide your listening: 8:55 - Do you recommend posting your mobile on your profile as I am now finding that I am being contacted by sales teams flogging? 12:15 - I am using LinkedIn to re-brand and promote my consultancy side-gig. There is no question that in 2020 if you are looking for a "white-collar" job in the corporate, public, or nonprofit sectors, you need to be on LinkedIn. In addition to the blog below, I'd like to invite you to download my LinkedIn checklist, so that you can review your profile top to bottom. Linkedin is considered the platform for professional networking and job hunting. Furthermore, with the advent of COVID and many workplaces and coffee shops around the globe still shut down, LinkedIn is the new "High Street". With over 600 million users, it's the only mainstream western social platform that is available worldwide, including China, whereas Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are still out of reach in that country.  Here are some statistics that prove the point of maximizing and amplifying your presence on the platform:   Less than half of people with LinkedIn profiles are actively using the platform. That is, posting links, sharing content, commenting, and updating their profiles regularly. This is good news for you if you want to take advantage of LinkedIn to boost your professional connections and reputation.   Linkedin users are high earners: Data shows that close to 44% of its users in the United States take home an annual salary which is above the national median. It's safe to say we can extrapolate that to other countries as well. So again, if you are in a white-collar profession, this is likely the platform for you to develop your connections and opportunities for work and business.   Linkedin is excellent for discovering people: Who are the right people to connect in the organization you want to work for? Who are the right recruiters and headhunters for your expertise, and also to do your research before applying for a job (i.e. who was doing the job before you? Who will be your manager and co-workers?). By doing a bit of research, you can easily uncover all of the people listed above.   Recruiters and hiring managers are heavy users and likely to be on LinkedIn every day. There are on average 14 million jobs advertised on LinkedIn at any one time. And I don't know a single recruiter or head hunter who doesn't rely heavily on LinkedIn to do their jobs - both to advertise roles and search for great candidates. Despite all of the above, which when we put pen to paper shows the power of the platform over one's career, it's amazing to see how many professionals neglect their profiles and don't take the steps to make the platform work for them, instead of against them. Linkedin is the new High Street. Imagine LinkedIn is the main business hub in your city. In Melbourne, that would be Collins Street. Imagine you are walking up Collins Street on your way to an important meeting which could have huge repercussions on your career. I'm assuming you would be dressed to impress, and ready to deliver your pitch, yes? Well, that's how you'd have to be in 2020 when you are on Linkedin. Let's start with the basics: 1. You need a professional photo The first step to impress on LinkedIn is not dissimilar from the first impression you want to have when you walk into a job interview. So investing in a professional photo is key and LinkedIn data shows it can get your profile 14 times more views than other types of profile pictures. A great photo needs to inspire confidence, convey work experience, and portrait you as a likable person.  I do LinkedIn Audits as a service, and it still surprises me how many excellent professionals have terrible profile photos. I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to find a great picture that shows your best self to your network. 2. Work experience that has meaning and is relatable A lot of people focus on writing a great headline for their profiles and on having a very inspirational About section. But when you check out their Work Experience section, nothing makes sense. You don't know the organizations they worked for, their job titles as a jumble of acronyms and abbreviations that means nothing. Even a job experience that lists you as a "Project Manager" working for KPMG, would leave me wondering: what area of KPMG? What type of project was this? How big or small? Was it internal or was it for a client? In sum, you have to add a paragraph to explain what you did and make it relatable, so a future employer will look and think "well, we may need this skill/experience" in the future. In fact, LinkedIn profiles that have detailed work experience have 5 times more connection requests, 8 times more views, and 10 times more messages.  3. You need to be an active participant of the platform The best way to use LinkedIn is to: maintain professional relationships by connecting with people you know, find people you may need to contact for business development or professional opportunities and to expand your reach and reputation. The best way to do these things is to share great content on the topics that are aligned with your profession and expertise. This will ensure you are kept "top of mind" of those who already know you, that is, your connections. But most importantly, when they like and comment on your posts, your posts will show up on their connections' feed. And your reach is then many times bigger than your own immediate connections. Just think about that, and feed the LinkedIn algorithm with good content that is great for sharing: Have you read a research or business article that will resonate with other professionals? Share it. Has anyone in your feed posted a great article, opinion, or story that is related to your expertise? Like and comment on that post. The danger lies if you decide to go into the following rabbit holes: Don't connect with people you don't know. You can always follow them if you want their content to show up on your feed. If you desperately want to connect, send them a written note explaining why.  This is what I recently wrote on a note to Michael Healy, an academic who studies career coaching: "Hi Michael, I read your recent article and loved it, and would be delighted to connect with you and keep in touch. LinkedIn didn't let me connect with you because I don't have your email! Cheers Renata" He accepted and we have been in touch since. My goal is to invite him as a guest on the podcast. A clear exception is if you want to connect with me: I'm giving you my blessing to connect with me, but please send me a note telling me how you found out about me! LinkedIn is not social networking: Today I read a post about someone who is really happy she's back on the pool. I'm happy for her, I'd love to go back to my local pool too. But that, in my view, is a post for Facebook. Whatever her professional expertise is, if it's not swimming, it's not LinkedIn material. Avoid being kicked out of LinkedIn: I speak from experience - it's a total nightmare. Can you imagine? Last night I watched a video of a woman who has half a million followers on YouTube, who teaches others how to become an Amazon Affiliate. And you guess it? Amazon kicked her out of the program. I related to her so much, as my profile was removed from LinkedIn for one day, just days after I launched my career coaching business. Why? Because I was sending too many messages to my connections, all the same messages, inviting them to subscribe to my newsletter (you should also subscribe, by the way - Click here!). I learned my lesson and I'm now very careful with how I use the platform. Another way you can get in trouble is by making a rude or racist comment. Two days ago I flagged one to LinkedIn. I reflected long and hard before I did so because I know the consequences. But it had to be done. And it's likely that person is now on the outside. Don't forget to download my LinkedIn Profile Checklist and start working on your profile today. Remember that I offer LinkedIn Audits and would be delighted to review yours for you. Find out more about my LinkedIn Audit service by Clicking Here. Ciao for now Renata

I say this a lot but genuinely one of my favourite players of all time on the show - Brendan “The Fevolution” Fevola. For those of you who have been living under a rock - Brendan Fevola is a retired AFL player for for the Carlton & Brisbane Football Clubs, he was easily one of the games most exciting players on and off the field. He played 204 games and kicked 623 goals. This week I caught up with one of my most admired people, Kane Lambert. I grew up playing my football with Kane and idolised him and the way he went about it. After he missed out on countless AFL drafts, his determination never dwindled. He's got an unreal story and there is no coincidence why he is a two time premiership player and an integral part of the Richmond Football Clubs line-up.We touch on his journey getting to where he is today, taking a GAP year, playing VFL, how he got to the Tigers, winning flags, celebrations and the pranks he has played on his team mates. Hey team. Bonus episode today, and a different kind of one at that. No marketing gold, no business lessons (well maybe a couple), just an inspiring conversation with a couple of homeless people, and a fellow for whom volunteering has enabled him to see his work life in a whole different way. By the way, there's a language warning on this one. Nothing outrageous, but I do get a little fired-up. You may recall a couple of episodes back I interviewed Lucas and Nic, the founders of Orange Sky Laundry – a mobile clothes washing service for homeless people. If you haven't listened to it then I suggest you do. Nic and Lucas's idea and passion touched me big time, so following that interview, I went and volunteered for them, spending a couple of hours at an Orange Sky Laundry parked on Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD. I loved every bit of it. The chance to give back to people in need. The chance to learn some life lessons from those less fortunate. And the conversations I had with one of their volunteers, and a couple of Orange Sky's homeless friends, have been life changing. I'll share what I learnt, later on. So, listen in as I wander through Melbourne's CBD trying to locate the Orange Sky Van ... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
