As the founder of Tasmanian based organisation SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY, Mitch's journey to raise awareness of suicide prevention and reduce the stigma around mental health began after his younger brother Ty took his own life in 2013. Mitch, the 2017 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year and National R U OK? Day Ambassador has had a remarkable journey transitioning from an everyday tradie into a well-respected and purpose-driven public speaker. Mitch leads with an extraordinary vision for change, courageously harnessing his lived experience of loss to encourage our community to speak up about their mental health and take action. All through the important message of sparking conversations. Since the loss of his younger brother Ty in 2013, Mitch has dedicated his life to helping, educating and encouraging others to speak up about mental health and prevent suicide. All of this important work is well aligned to Mitch's own personal values: compassion, authenticity, kindness and perseverance. Mitch has become a “go to” in the Tasmanian community for important discussions and messaging around mental health. From media interviews, his weekly radio segment or assisting those seeking guidance on start-up charities, a fun and vibrant MC of events, podcaster with his new show ‘Get Frank', Mitch does all he can to positively impact the community. When presenting at schools, workplaces and sporting clubs, Mitch speaks from the heart. The connection he creates with the audiences he presents to is both genuine and empowering. Ben Hirst; on the 12th of July he'll be climbing twice the height of Mount Everest, by trekking up and down the slopes of Mount Wellington in Hobart. It's the latest in a long line of ultra endurance challenges that he's been pumping out over the past 8 years to raise awareness and funds for mental health. His passion comes from living through his own struggles, which've included a drinking problem, lack of purpose and suicidality. At his lowest, Ben made the split second decision to end his life; when he happened to see a bumper sticker that stopped him. A decade on, he's a fulfilled father of two, working in suicide prevention for the Tassie charity, Speak Up! Stay ChatTY. You can support Ben's campaign here: https://lnkd.in/gWTh4tBF

Tash Cloak is one of the most passionate people I've ever met, and it was really special to have the opportunity to sit down and hear all of her story. From the age of 17 Tash worked with her Dad in small business, as well as studying to eventually get a degree in Law. She worked very long hours, faced many challenges (as many in small business do) but loved the time in business as it was alongside her best friend, her Dad. But in October of 2016, Tash sadly lost her Dad to suicide. Turning her world upside down, leaving her to pick up many pieces, and of course entering her into the dark world of suicide bereavement Tash set out to find out more about her self and where she wanted to then go in life. After many challenges, many learnings, many changes, Tash is now one of our longest serving Stay ChatTY team members. Tash contributes so much value day in and day out not only for our team, but for the communities and individuals she engages with across Tasmania. Tash shares in detail her experience of suicide, finding herself, her path in the awareness space now, life changing Nepal trips, her experience with IVF of late, and of course Stay ChatTY Shorts Day of which Tash is the leading force of. Tash is kind, caring, giving, passionate, smart, driven and knows how to make a difference. Please enjoy my episode with one of the kindest people I know, Tash Cloak! Safety - This episode deals with issues surrounding mental health and suicide, which may be triggering for some listeners. If you need support please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14

If you're a Tasmanian, you're probably familiar with today's guest. Mitch McPherson is the founder of Speak Up! Stay ChatTY, a mental health awareness organisation inspired by the loss of his younger brother Ty to suicide in 2013. Since then, the organisation has delivered programs into workplaces, community groups, schools and sporting clubs to encourage people to speak up about mental health and create a kinder and more accepting world. In today's conversation, TICT's Luke Martin asks Mitch to share his advice with the Tasmanian tourism and hospitality industry, which has arguably been one of the hardest hit by the last two years' Covid-related challenges. While we're encouraged by the most recent Tourism Industry Business Sentiment Survey, which showed that 95% of respondents had a positive outlook for the future of the industry, it's undeniable that the last two years have had real impact on the industry's collective mental health. Mitch talks through practical self-care strategies to build resilience and avoid negative cycles, as well as the importance of looking out for others around us who might be doing it tough. For leaders and managers, Mitch offers his tips on building workplace cultures that are engaged with and proactive around mental health strategies. He believes that these cultures need to be set from the top, and can have real impact on individuals and teams. And with June 21 – the shortest day of the year – coming up, Mitch gets chatty about Shorts Day. It's a new awareness initiative that encourages us to wear shorts to work on what might be one of the chilliest days to brave the cold and brave the conversation around mental health. Mitch McPherson’s entire world was upended when at the beginning of 2013, his 18 year old brother Ty took his own life.Immersed in grief, he decided the least he could do was try and keep Ty’s name alive, so, he traced a simple drawing of a pair of shorts, as his little brother was always dressed in footy shorts, along with the words speak up, stay chatty with the TY at the end of 'chatty' capitalised.Mitch had no idea this simple sketch would be the catalyst for the creation of one of the most acclaimed suicide prevention and mental health promotion programs in the country. This is an incredible story of vulnerability, strength and the undying love of one man for his little brother, a young life gone far too soon. More than 3000 Australians take their life every year, 75% of those male. Heartbreakingly, suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged between 15 and 44, that's why movements like Stay Chatty are so vitally important. Mitch's work has saved lives. In this chat, Mitch and I discuss: his new role as a father to his beautiful little daughter, the impact losing his brother has had on how he'll raise her, how we should be raising young men in today's world by teaching them to be vulnerable, Speak Up Stay Chatty's humble beginnings and how it's grown to what it is today.A trigger warning - this conversation addresses suicide. This week is Mental Health Awareness Week so in this episode of the Whole Circle Podcast we revisit a previous episode where we spoke to Mitch from Speak up and Stay Chatty. Most people in some way or another have been touched by mental illness, whether it's themselves or someone they know. 1 in 5 people aged between 16-85 suffer with a mental illness whether it be depression or anxiety which can lead to substance abuse issues too. With that in mind, if you are going through some mental health issues at the moment and you need to get some help, then make sure you do so. You will be able to find help in your local area with a quick Google search. Mitch McPherson founded 'Speak Up Stay ChatTY after he tragically lost his brother, Ty, to suicide in 2013. Tina talks to Mitch about what he has been through, why talking about suicide and ‘speaking up’ is so important and how we can all keep an eye on each other, and most importantly, speak to each other and recognise the warning signs. This is an emotional yet powerful episode on the importance of talking about and creating more awareness around suicide prevention and mental health.Stay ChatTY Organisation: https://staychatty.com.au/
Sadly, many of us have been touched deeply by the sensitive topic of suicide. It's becoming more and more common to know of someone in our immediate circle, who has lost a loved one to suicide. Today we are talking with Mitch, who is making a huge difference right here in Australia, in raising awareness for mental health. Making a huge difference in the community in preventing suicide rates While Mitch admits it's difficult to gauge the difference that he's making in the community, and how many lives he's truly impacting, he knows his strong message is serving well. He is constantly receiving messages of gratitude from his talks in school, and even being stopped in the street by parents acknowledging the amazing work that he's doing. From all the positive feedback, he knows that his talks have allowed children to open up about issues, that they may not have otherwise brought up with their parents. Talk about powerful stuff! It's all the feedback that keeps Mitch's fire alive, and helps him to jump out in the bed in the morning, even though it's tough some days for him to talk about. He sees his personal experience as having the ability to change lives for the better. Mitch just wants everyone to know that if you've been touched by suicide, that it's never anybody's fault. In the end, it's the decision of the person that takes their life. All we can do is contribute along the way in a positive and influential manner. The more we can break down barriers, share, laugh and have fun together, the less suicides we will see. Community Engagement (Organisation): SPEAK UP Stay ChatTY When his younger brother Ty took his own life in 2013, Mitch McPherson founded the suicide prevention charity SPEAK UP Stay ChatTY, to spread the message that nothing is so bad that you can’t talk about it. Stay ChatTY work in partnership with Relationships Australia Tasmania. SUSCs dedicated approach to suicide prevention and awareness has seen the charity positively affect the lives of thousands of Tasmanians, using personal experience to promote the importance of checking in with family and friends to identify possible hidden issues affecting individuals. Since 2013, SUSC has spoken to more than 600 school groups, workplaces and sporting clubs throughout Tasmania and partners with key community groups, businesses and sporting identities. SUSC has raised awareness throughout the community with visual reminders of more than 30,000 bumper stickers, over 8,000 wrist bands and more recently a full clothing range. In 2014 SUSC partnered with Relationships Australia Tasmania to further the reach of the charities key messages. As a result of this partnership, the #TeamChatty Schools Program has been developed and delivered to more than 750 Grade 9 and 10 children in seven Tasmanian schools. In 2016, SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY (SUSC) was awarded the Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention Tasmanian LiFE Award, recognising the huge impact the grass roots charity has had in raising awareness of mental health and suicide prevention within the Tasmanian community. “Stay ChatTY” has become a household name in Tasmania due to the dedication, commitment and tireless work of Mitch and his team of supporters. This award recognises not only the dedication of Mitch but that of everyone involved in the SPEAK UP Stay ChatTY community. #ManyVoicesOneGoal #suicideprevention
