Pretendeer je digitaal soeverein te zijn, maar zet je sub-sub-leverancier alles bij Amazon? Dan klopt het verhaal niet. Op de Fediverse draaien meer dan 40.000 servers en bijna geen enkel bedrijf. Volgens twee K/Coens is dat geen bug, maar een feature. Randal en Jurian praten met Koen de Jonge en Coen Wesselman van Procolix. Dat hostingbedrijf doet al 25 jaar bijna alles zelf, volledig op open source, zonder Big Tech. Sinds 2024 is het voor 100% eigendom van een stichting, zodat het nooit tegen zijn eigen missie in verkocht kan worden. Waarom zo radicaal? Omdat ze te vaak zagen wat afhankelijkheid kost. Zijn we nog enigszins digitaal soeverein? Het is al jaren een heikel dossier. Overheden en bedrijven zijn afhankelijk geraakt van Amerikaanse cloudreuzen, softwareplatforms en ecosystemen. Met privacydeskundige Brenno de Winter duiken we in de geschiedenis van dit dossier. Want hoe heeft het ooit zo ver kunnen komen? Al jaren roepen deskundigen hetzelfde riedeltje. Het bewustzijn groeit, maar de drempel over durven we vaak nog niet. Dat laat het dossier Solvinity maar al te goed zien. Het is ook geen zwart-witverhaal, waar Amerikaanse tech “slecht” is en Europese tech “goed”. Het gaat over zeggenschap, over bewuste keuzes, risico’s en weten waar je van afhankelijk bent. De Winter schreef er een boek over: Soevereiniteit: Hoe dan? Vooral om een kader te stellen. Want de laatste jaren wordt er steeds meer over gesproken, maar daar blijft het dan ook bij. Om het toegankelijker te maken, vergelijkt hij soeverein zijn met het leven van zijn lievelingsdier: de kat. Je moet jezelf blijven afvragen of jij de regie hebt, of je weg kan als je dat wilt en of je weet wie er toegang heeft tot jouw data. In deze aflevering van De Technoloog duiken we in de mogelijkheden tot digitale soevereiniteit. Waar in de keten gaat het precies mis? En is het echt zo eng om de overstap te maken naar Europese diensten? Volgens De Winter zou Nederland een voorbeeld moeten nemen aan Frankrijk en Duitsland, waar ze wél een digitale strategie durven te voeren, terwijl Nederland vooral benadrukt wat er allemaal niet kan. Datshiane Navanayagam talks to two women from Brazil and the UK who have online businesses buying and selling second hand clothes.Ana Luiza McLaren is a co-founder of Enjoei, the biggest second hand selling site in Brazil. She started selling her own clothes through a blog she wrote over fifteen years ago and it wasn't long before friends were asking her to sell their clothes too. The blog became so popular she and her partner decided to give up their jobs and set up an online business. Ana chose the name Enjoei because it means 'I got sick of it' in Brazilian. Sarah Dean founded the GoThrift website with her partner and two friends in 2019 selling second-hand and vintage clothing. The company has recently become Loopi - and now also buys from the general public. Sarah had always preferred to buy second-hand as a way to stand out from the crowd by wearing better quality clothing for less money. This is just a quick way to start a sentence that we would normally start by saying, “There is no need to.” But often in English, in spoken English, we'll say “No need to...” instead. Maybe you're going to a party and you say, Hey, should I bring some food? The person might respond and say, No need to bring food. There will be lots. Maybe... Let me think of another example. Let's say my brother was coming over to help me do some weeding. The weeds are growing really fast here on the farm. If it rained or if it's raining, I might text him and say, No need to come over today. It's too wet to work outside. So again, it's just a short form of the phrase, “There is no need to... ” or “There's no need to...” but often in spoken English or when we text, Sorry, the geese are honking. There's lots of bugs too, is the phrase, “to need to go”. Now, this can simply mean that you have to do something. You can say, I need to go to the store. But the meaning I wanted to teach you today is the meaning that refers to having to go to the bathroom. Let's say you really need to go pee. You might say to someone, Can we stop the car at the next rest stop because I need to go. When we were driving, when we were younger and our kids were younger, sometimes one of our kids in the back of the van would say, Can we stop? I need to go. And what they meant is that they needed to go to the bathroom. So it's a very nice way of saying that you need to use the washroom or you need to go to the bathroom.So to review, “No need to...” simply means, “There is no need to... ” No need to watch this video twice, if you understand it the first time. And the phrase, “to need to go” can simply mean that you have to go somewhere. But we also use it to mean that you need to go to the bathroom.Hey, let's look at a comment from I'm not sure why I did that little dance. I think that's what little kids do when they need to go, anyways. Let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Brenno. Hi, Bob. Thanks as usual. This is the fourth day of my summer vacation. And I mentioned to Jen the other day that somewhere around four or 5:00, all of a sudden, I was a little bit bored.It's rare for me to be bored. So that was something new and it's a good thing. When I'm bored then new ideas come to me. When I'm bored, I start to think of new ways to teach English in particular. And I have some ideas that I've been mulling over in my head for ways that I can make new videos or little posts I can do on my community tab and those kinds of things. So yes. Bob, the Canadian, after months of being a little bit too busy, was actually bored for just a little bit.But I won't be bored later today because it is actually market day.
