In episode 134 of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Dimond talks to the OKKIYO, Dr Jacqueline Beltz. I've talked a lot recently about how my favourite brand stories to share are the ones that really are offering a solution to a problem; founders who genuinely have identified a gap for something no one else is doing. The fact that we're now six years into this show and I'm still able to meet people like Jacqui, who truly are doing something new, feels really special.Dr Jacqueline Beltz is a Melbourne based ophthalmologist (ophthalmology being the specialty medical field of diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases), and last year she launched OKKIYO with a mascara specifically formulated for people with eye sensitivity. That in and of itself is impressive, but her commitment to creating something accessible and inclusive extends far beyond just the formula. The packaging of OKKIYO's mascara is the first I've seen to use braille in equal hierarchy within the branding, the tube itself is a square which makes it easier to identify and negates the risk of it rolling off a bench top and the user having to rifle around to find it if they have vision impairment, the name and branding were chosen based on visibility, and even the external card packaging has been designed in a way that allows for greater readability- there's a lot more to it, which Jacqui explains in our conversation far more eloquently than I can. What Jacqui is doing with this brand, in my opinion, really sums up all the best bits of the beauty industry- it's innovative, it's fun, it's not exclusionary and, at the crux of it, it's a really great product. In this conversation, Jacqui shares her take on the power of naivety when it comes to launching a brand, the importance of beauty on our confidence when we're struggling with our health, and the pressure that comes with launching a brand with a singular SKU.   In a world where we, as consumers, are exposed to hundreds of marketing and advertising messages daily, it's incredibly difficult for a brand to cut through that noise and get noticed.   Every now and then I notice a new brand doing a particularly good job of getting noticed, though, and today's guest is one of those.   About a month ago, I was reading an article on the Mamamia blog about the best mascara brands, and came across one I'd never heard of before – Okkiyo – a new Australian brand of mascara designed for people with sensitive eyes.   Now, if you've ever watched my podcast videos you've probably caught me dabbing at my eyes from time to time. Nose too probably. I struggle with allergies daily, and a lot of skincare and makeup brands exacerbate them.    So obviously the very specific niche that Okkiyo is going for with their brand spoke to me, but on top of that, their branding is super vibrant and really stands out and they have a really unique brand story.   Today on the show I'm excited to share an interview with Okkiyo's founder, Dr Jaqueline Beltz. She's not even 12 months in since launching the brand late last year, but she's already surpassed 5,000 customers and shows no signs of slowing down!    If you love hearing other entrepreneurs share their stories, you'll enjoy this immensely! Leah's story is one of overcoming fear, embracing vulnerability, and stepping into her true self. Listen now to start your journey toward living a more authentic and confident life! --- Listen to the podcast here: Rediscovering Your Authentic Self To Thrive with Leah Beltz Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. I'm a big fan of music. I'm a particularly big fan of Pitbull, I listened to his Globalization channel on XM Radio. I'm a fan of him as a person as well. He has a lot of things he says on the channel, one of them is if you don't know where you're coming from, you don't know where you're going. Similar to what Bob Marley said, when you know your history then you know where you're coming from. And so I want to talk to you today about a process that I underwent several months ago around kind of taking my life experience, my life story and trying to distill it down into kind of an easily digestible piece of information for me to keep with me, and there's a process called The Dig that was administered to me by my guest today, Leah Beltz, the founder of Honor Your Space. ---   Leah, welcome to the program.    Hi, Stephen, welcome. It's nice to be here again.    Yeah, it's wonderful to have you. And, first of all, tell us a little bit about The Dig, since I kind of started that whole thing. I know you're a facilitator, you've worked with a lot of clients on this program.    I can give you a short answer and I can give you a long answer. The short answer, if I were to describe it in only two words, I would describe The Dig as self-discovery. So similar to what you said with Pitbull, kind of understanding where you've come from to understand where you're going. I would say the longer version of that, The Dig is a one-on-one facilitated method of self-discovery that helps you get epic clarity on who you are and how you operate so that you can then live with more confidence and connection to your life's purpose.    So, we're talking about clients here and people who have had a lot of life experiences because most people do and most people have a lot of things they've gone through in life that just ends up being confusing, because it's like, “Why this? Why that?” So, what's the journey, the customer journey, for anyone who speaks product, around that person who comes to you and just like, “Okay, well, I had this happen, I had that happen, and I've had these experiences, and WTF?”?   Right. What I love about The Dig, what makes it unique is the actual process that we go through. So, I want to acknowledge there are a lot of tools and processes like this. The Simon Sinek Find Your Why or the Pursuit of Happiness, all these different things, but what makes The Dig unique is the process which we go through and it's done through a matter of storytelling and reflection and it's all based on capturing different words, so it involves language and we capture words throughout the conversation and then those words, I work with the client,

We discuss Norman Mailer's relations with the Finders, Gerry Davis, and the curious case of Steve E. Beltz. Lauren Beltz, also known as The Budget Boss shares her journey from growing up in an accounting family to carving her niche in bookkeeping and finance for small businesses.  She discussed The Budget Brigade, her initiative blending education and personal finance. Lauren emphasized the importance of budgeting and recounted her own experiences with managing finances, including the challenges of budgeting on a variable income and the importance of frugality and intentionality in spending. She also talked about her personal life, including her plans to move to Colorado and her strategies to avoid lifestyle creep. Additionally, Lauren provided insights on the emotional aspects of financial planning, the significance of enjoying life without overspending, and the importance of setting realistic financial goals. Learn more about Lauren Beltz: Lauren grew up in a family surrounded by accountants. She learned from prepping 1040 returns at a young age that she did not want to follow the family trend. She ended up becoming a bookkeeper instead, working in finance and helping small businesses since her teenage years. Lauren has always been fascinated with numbers and patterns. With over fifteen years of experience, she is excited to take the knowledge she's learned in industries spanning from aviation, investment firms, motorsports, and retail and focusing it to where her true passion lies – personal finance, sole proprietorships, and small businesses. She is a previous Financial Peace University coordinator and loves helping friends and colleagues with personal finance questions. It became an inside joke at her last corporate position that an unofficial employee benefit working there was free access to “Budget with Beltz” which has now become The Budget Brigade. Lauren splits her free time between her two passions: money and stories. When she isn't working the analytical side of her brain at The Budget Brigade, you can find her spinning up her creative side, writing and editing at Lauren Beltz Writes. My producing partners, Jimmy Luc and Alex Caimano, and I had made two short films prior to Nuclear (Death March and Four Pins) which both took place during war time and were period pieces and we wanted to complete what we were calling our loose trilogy. So Jimmy and I went away to work on the script for a number of months and we just felt that a family drama taking place against the backdrop of a nuclear war was fitting. In this episode visual artist Eric Beltz and I have a powerful dialogue surrounding his art practice and what he means by devotional drawings. We talk about the path of pursing art, the role of the artist, and the ways in which our practice as artists can influence our lives for better and sometimes for worse. We discuss the nature of making art in this 21st century landscape and the ways in which expanded consciousness plays a part in connecting to more universal truths surrounding our lives. ------------------------------------------------  ericbeltz.com Eric Beltz is a pencil artist who lives and works in Santa Barbara.
