A libertarian podcast from behind enemy lines in the People's Republic of Portland, Oregon. We discuss topics of liberty, politics, and philosophy all while drinking our livers into cirrhosis.
In this second part to Brett's rant on culture, Brett discusses the culture war, the threats of Progressivism and Woke activists to our culture, and the hope we have for victory in the culture war.
As firsts go, this is a new one for Half-Hour Liberty Hour, a solo episode from Brett. In this new mini-series, titled “Brett's Bemusings”, Brett will discuss various topics that are either in the news, concerning his beloved Portland, diving into the culture war, or just whatever is on his mind at the moment. In this first part of a two part episode, Brett discusses culture and the culture war, laying out definitions and the importance of culture. Brett discussed how politics is downstream from culture, what culture is, and what shapes our culture. Brett finishes this episode discussing our current cultural deterioration.
In this rant, Rob explains why he has been unable to record for the past couple of months. Hopefully, that issue will be resolved in the next few weeks. He rants about why the election does not matter, as the State still persists. He also delivers the Christmas speech that he would love to hear Donald Trump deliver. It's sure to anger everyone except for liberty lovers. If it were to happen, sit back and watch the world burn.
In this episode, Brett and Rob discuss the recent election in Oregon, including the mayoral race in Portland, a specific Metro Council commissioner race, and a bond issue. They also discuss the now world-famous ballot measures to legalize psilocybin mushrooms and decriminalize street drugs. There is also an Easter Egg in the episode, so please listen for it. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Beer New rants are to come, but recording has been delayed to issues outside Rob's control. He'll speak more of it when they are recorded and released.
In this rant, which has been building for months, Rob talks about the issues with the Breonna Taylor case and the need to reform the police. Specifically: Reactions to the grand jury findings Issues Rob has with the case The real problem (and it's not racism) 7 steps to reforming the police and 1 step to reforming ourselves Rob hopes you have a drink in your hand, because you'll probably need one by the end.
This is a first for Half-Hour Liberty Hour, a solo episode. In this new mini-series, titled "Rob's Rant", Rob will be trying to upload a weekly rant of his over a topic that is either in the news, concerning his beloved Portland, or just whatever is on his mind at the moment. In this rant, Rob delves into the fighting over RBG's body, how she will probably be canonized in the American Civic Religion, how both the Left and the Right want to take away your inalienable rights, how the Left are greedy, how the Right are gullible, and who the new Supreme Court justice will be doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Rob hopes you have a drink in your hand, because you'll probably need one by the end.
WE'RE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK! And snarkier than ever. After a prolonged absence, the Dynamically Drunken Duo have returned. Were they hibernating? Did Brett run off to join the circus? Was Rob committed to an insane asylum? In this episode, Brett and Rob discuss the following: Where the heck they've been The murder of George Floyd and the riotous response The murder of Breonna Taylor How the Corporate Media has been lying about the protest and riots What is really happening in Portland Sit back, relax, have a drink if you are able to, and listen to the guys for the first time in a while. This episode's drink of choice: Water?!? Yes, the episode was recorded in the late morning Pacific time, so there is unfortunately no drinking in this one.
Rob actually managed to get a day off from work, so he set about clearing out the archives. This episode was originally recorded in late November 2018. In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, Brett and Rob discuss the results of the recent statewide election in Oregon and the local election in Portland (SPOILER ALERT: It went badly for liberty lovers). The guys discuss: The reelection of "Corrupt Kate" Brown as governor The Super-Majority now held by Democrats in the state government OR Measure 102 Bonds for affordable housing OR Measure 103: Ban on grocery and soda taxes OR Measure 104: Change tax raising threshold from 3/5 to 2/3 OR Measure 105: Repeal of Oregon's Sanctuary State status OR Measure 106: Banning public funds for abortion Portland Measure 26-201: Gross revenues tax The state of Oregon suing the President of the United States It was almost as if the Dynamically Drunken Duo were looking into a crystal ball in this episode. Since the turn of 2019, the Oregon Democrat Super-Majority has completely gone off the rails. From new taxes, to massive unfunded mandates, to weak PERS reform, to the nation's first statewide rent control law, there is nothing to stop this out-of-control government. Oregon has set its path, possibly irreversibly, toward bankruptcy and economic collapse. Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Nullification by Tom Woods This Episode's Drink of Choice: Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Recorded in February 2019 while Rob was home for jury duty (no worries...when he explained what an Anarcho-Capitalist is, he was removed from the jury pool). In this episode of refuting stupidity, Brett and Rob lay into the stupidity of the Green New Deal, proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. They originally recorded 90 minutes of material, and Rob had to chop it down into around 30 minutes. They guys point out the stupidity of the GND and the solutions to solving all of the issues that the GND attempts to solve. The guys hope you are sitting down and having a drink with us on this one. Brett's microphone had trouble during this recording. Rob has done his best to make repairs, but Brett still sounds like he's speaking over a telephone. Our apologies.
This bonus episodelet was promised to you in the liner notes from Episode 029 - Why Capitalism? This is a segment that was cut for time. In this clip, the Dynamically Drunken Duo honestly assess the few weaknesses they find in capitalism: There is no social safety net You can lose everything Derivatives exist Government involvement Brett and Rob concede that capitalism is not a perfect economic system, but it surely is the best one that has ever been discovered. Even though they identify four weaknesses, they will defend the true free market (one that has no outside interference from the State) until their last breaths.
In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, the Dynamically Drunken Duo change things a bit with a beer-focused episode. Using Charlie Papazian's Unspoken Passion recipe, Brett and Rob walk you through the basics of making a batch of homebrew. Although they forget to discuss some very important issues when making beer (such as proper cleaning and sanitation, the equipment necessary for brewing, etc.), hopefully you are pushed into experimenting with homebrewing yourself by this episode. And of course, they have to talk about politics. In this episode you will learn: How beer saved the world The (very) basics of homebrewing What has been going on in the lives of Brett and Rob since last summer How homebrewing can help lead you to living a more liberty lifestyle A brief history of homebrewing So sit back, relax, have a beer if you can, and maybe you'll be inspired to start homebrewing yourself. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Beer and lots of it (Ninkasi Total Domination IPA)
This bonus episodelet was a segment cut for content from Episode 029 - Why Capitalism? In this very short segment, Brett and Rob discuss how the price of mass storage has greatly dropped since the mid-1990s (and Brett even makes an allusion to the 1980s) because the free market controlled the prices, not the State. Even though the Internet is never mentioned, the only way that your devices became ubiquitous is due to the cheap price of mass storage. You can thank capitalism for the device on which you are listening to this episodelet.
Can you believe it? A new episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour? Say it ain't so! It is so. Rob has finally had a couple of days off from his new job and found an episode the Dynamically Drunken Duo recorded while he was on vacation in July 2018. It's the guys' first remote-recorded episode, and boy did it take some time to edit. They think you'll like it. There are two more episodes, both recorded when Rob was briefly in Portland in November 2018, that are due to be edited and released in the future. Keep an eye out for them. In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, Brett and Rob discuss why any trade war, especially one with China, is a bad idea. They lay out the reasons from both economic and social perspectives, with a heavy emphasis on liberty (would you expect anything less?). So sit back, have a drink if you can, and listen to why America will never survive a trade war. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Bacardi Silver Rum
July was vacation month. Brett was gone at the first part of the month, and Rob was gone in the middle of the month. Thus, Half-Hour Liberty Hour was on a brief hiatus. However, the guys are back with a new full-episode that is longer than usual. In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, Brett and Rob discuss small ways in which you can start living a liberty lifestyle. The Dynamically Drunken Duo touch upon the following major ideas: Start Living Austrian Economics Create Your Own Goods In Order To Consume Less Learn To Say "No" Practice The Non-Aggression Principle In Real Life Resources Mentioned In This Episode: The Mises Institute FEE SkillShare Udemy Tom Woods' Happy Earner Grease Car This Episode's Drink of Choice: Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
In this episode of refuting stupidity, Brett and Rob lay into the stupidity of Oregon Ballot Measure 43, which will be on the state's direct democracy ballot come November. It is a gun confiscation measure that has California's legislature looking with green-eyed envy across the border. In their usual bombastic way, the Dynamically Drunken Duo explain what the bill covers, they types of firearms that each section is seeking to ban (with actual examples), and why this is stupid. You're going to need a drink to listen to this one.
This is the promised Part 2 to Episode 030 - Is This The Worst Leader In American History? (Part 1). If you haven't listened to Part 1, don't spoil the surprise by listening to Part 2 first. In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, the Dynamically Drunken Duo tackle who they believe is the worst leader in American history (and it may surprise you). Brett and Rob explain the egregious Constitutional violations committed by this president, citing article and section of the document, and give the reasons why he did what he did. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey
What? A release on a Monday? Memorial Day, even? Yes. In a first, the guys recorded so much material for this episode that it could be split into two full episodes. The second half is slated for release later this week. Hopefully it sounds OK as Rob has been rage-editing whilst crying in his beer over the Champions League Final (he doesn't want to talk about it...). In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, the Dynamically Drunken Duo tackle who they believe is the worst leader in American history (and it may surprise you). Brett and Rob spend this episode busting a lot of myths concerning the man's actions leading up to his presidency and the time period just prior to and during his first year in office? Who is it? You'll have to listen to find out. Shout-outs In This Episode: Matt in Wisconsin Levi in Kentucky This Episode's Drink of Choice: Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey
Two bonus episodelets on the same day? Say it ain't so... This bonus episodelet was a segment cut for time from Episode 028 - Oregon, Have You Lost Your Mind? Brett and Rob discuss Oregon's Senate Joint Memorial 201, which is a resolution begging the General Government to ban firearms based upon scary-looking components, ban bump stocks, ban "ghost guns", expand the definition of firearms to include non-firearms, and ban our universal right to defend ourselves in the manner we choose. Brett and Rob completely destroy the Memorial using logic, which is in short supply in the Oregon legislature. The really funny thing is, the state of Oregon could choose to ban all of these things within the state, but once again they pass the buck because they know that if they enacted these measures, it would cause 2/3 of the state to secede. Secession is a beautiful thing...
A twofer today. These segments were cut for time from Episode 027 - Common Objections From The Christian Right. Brett and Rob discuss how legislating morality can come back to bite you in the end, and how Rob taught his students how to think about making ethical decisions, as well as a discussion of Christians in the military. It's a good thing The Sexton was flowing...
In this episode of refuting stupidity, Brett and Rob lay into the stupidity of the "young adult-led" gun control/confiscation movement since the Parkland shooting. The Dynamically Drunken Duo tear into the movement and the money behind it; Rob gets diarrhea of the mouth when comparing these children to the suffragette movement of the 1910s; Brett calls out David Hogg by name; Morpheus and Neo make an appearance; and the guys drink a lot while pointing out the stupidity of these children and the movement.
In this alcohol-fueled episode, the Dynamically Drunken duo step away from their beloved whisky and consume brandy, a high-fallutin' drink for this high-fallutin' topic. What is that topic? Capitalism. Brett and Rob explain true free market capitalism and defend it from common complaints. They admit that there are some downsides to it (those will be released in Bonus Episodelet 017), but defend it as the best economic system that we have yet discovered. Sit back, relax, have a drink if you can, and listen to a very simple explanation and defense of capitalism. Resource Mentioned In This Episode: Tom Woods Show Episode 987 - "Price Gouging" Is Urgently Necessary This Episode's Drink of Choice: St-Remy VSOP French Brandy
In this local episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, the Dynamically Drunken Duo tackle Governor Kate Brown's diminishing popularity, as well as some new laws proposed and passed by the Oregon legislature recently: Senate Bill 1512 (Electoral Votes Go To Popular Vote Winner) Senate Bill 1529 (Taxing Repatriated Money From Overseas) Measure 101 (Taxes on Health Insurance Companies and Hospitals) You may also notice that Brett mentions Senate Joint Memorial 201. That segment had to be cut for length and will be released in the future as Bonus Episodelet 015. Sit back, relax, have a drink if you can, and listen as Brett and Rob rant about the continuing stupidity of the Oregon government. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Maker's 46 Kentucky Bourbon Whisky
Although normally released on Mondays, this episode of Refuting Stupidity is coming out on a Thursday in order to shorten the backlogged queue of recorded material that Rob is trying to edit his way through. In this episode of Refuting Stupidity, Brett and Rob discuss the stupidity involved in a letter to the editor of the Oregonian newspaper from 3/10/2018. The Dynamically Drunken Duo make fun of the author, who is complaining about changes to a tax he doesn't even pay, and then talk about how the government lied about the application of the tax, how the arts can be and always were privately funded, and what you get when the State funds the arts. Letter to the Editor Source: Lifting the Arts Tax Cap
As promised last month, in this Bonus Episodelet, cut for time from Episode 027 - Common Objections From The Christian Right, Brett and Rob dig into the highly controversial subject of Israel. They deftly slay the myth that libertarians are anti-Israel by distinguishing biblical Israel from the modern nation-state, that libertarians aren't anti-zionist or anti-semitic because they have valid criticisms of Israel, and that libertarians are anti-aggression no matter which country is behind it. As a bonus, you also get to learn about theological terms like eschatology and dispensationalism. It's a good thing that the Sexton was flowing... Rob would like to apologize for not publishing any material for the past three weeks. It was some of the most stressful time of his life (he had to move into a new place). He doesn't know how he survived last week without having a mental breakdown. Keep an eye out for some Refuting Stupidity episodes, and there are also two other full episodes waiting to be edited. As he is currently on a road trip to see friends and family (and apply for jobs, if the State of Oregon is reading this), he hopes to make some time to get more content released.
In this episode of Refuting Stupidity, which was recorded in September 2017, Brett and Rob discuss the stupidity involved in a letter to the editor of the Oregonian newspaper from 9/11/2017. The Dynamically Drunken Duo shred the letter writer's opinion that the First Amendment does not allow people to discriminate in their business dealings. Letter to the Editor Source: Using First Amendment to Discriminate
The Dynamically Drunken Duo get all religious on ya. In this alcohol-fueled episode, Brett and Rob, in the spirit of Episode 017 - Common Objections from the Right, are back and slaying common objections from the Christian Right. They tackle: Libertarians will let drugs flood our streets Libertarians are immoral hedonists A libertarian society would let sexual immorality run rampant Libertarianism is un-Christian Libertarians are all pro-choice Libertarians are anti-family Ron Paul and his supporters are like a cult Jesus was anti-individualist Don't worry, the guys didn't ignore the big-I issue (Israel). That segment had to be cut for time from this episode, but it will be released in a few weeks as its own bonus episodelet. Resources Mentioned (or alluded to) In This Episode: The Libertarian Christian Institute Liberty & Virtue Video Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity This Episode's Drink of Choice: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey
In this Bonus Episodelet, cut for time from Episode 024 - More Liberty Definitions, Brett and Rob dig deeply into the Anarcho-Communists. Rob details the dualism of Anarcho-Communism, how the twain should never meet, how it appears to be agitating for a GBIG, and how it does not believe that there can be an objective measurement of labor productivity. If Anarcho-Communists get their way, productivity drops to nil, and you cannot be downsized for lack of work. It's a good thing that the Bulleit is flowing...
In the inaugural episode of Refuting Stupidity, which was recorded in September 2017, Brett and Rob discuss the stupidity involved in the standing for the flag controversy, most commonly found in the NFL. They talk about why it is stupid, who is being stupid, and whether they choose to stand for the flag or not and why. This has turned out to be a rather controversial topic for discussion, and the Dynamically Drunken Duo know that they may wind up angering people with their opinions. Have a listen with an open mind and emotions in check, as the guys are going to get controversial.
In this Bonus Episodelet, cut for content from Episode 022 - Dammit, Oregon, Knock It Off!, Brett tells his inside story about former governor John Kitzhaber and $700,000,000. Rob gives his theory as to why he thinks that Oregon keeps electing people like Kitzhaber (and Kate Brown). It's a good thing that the Crater Lake Rye is flowing...
The Dynamically Drunken Duo announce a new series of bonus episodelets titled, "Refuting Stupidity", with this audio release. What is Refuting Stupidity? Have a listen and find out.
In this episode, the Dynamically Drunken Duo lay aside the topic they were originally going to record (an Oxford-style debate on socialism in professional sports) in favor of addressing gun hysteria in the wake of the Florida high school shooting. Brett tosses aside many gun myths with well-researched facts, and Rob debunks politicians' and the media's definition of an assault weapon with the true meaning of the term. Sit back, relax, have a drink if you can, and listen to Brett and Rob slay some gun myth dragons. Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Gun Facts pdf from GunFacts.info No, There Haven't Been 18 School Shootings This Year from Reason.com This Episode's Drink of Choice: AMFs Ensure that you listen all the way to the end for an Easter Egg from the guys... Rob apologizes for his audio. He was experimenting with reflective sound reduction via moving blankets whilst recording and he got his microphone too near the blankets. That's why he sounds like he's trapped in a box. He'll ensure that it is better next time or Brett will make him kiss a picture of Abraham Lincoln. Blech!
Holy Cow! The Dynamically Drunken Duo have stumbled into their 25th episode. Who knew that they had enough brain cells left to do so? They sure didn't think they did. In honor of their 25th episode, Brett and Rob celebrate by drinking a whole bunch of whisky and discuss an episode in American history that is wrongly taught today: The Whisky Rebellion of 1794. They discuss how the rebellion was actually a wide-spread success for the nullification of unconstitutional laws, and how once the general government unconstitutionally steals power from the hands of the people, it sets a precedent in which it never wants to give up that power. The guys also discuss how important (and legal) it is to nullify laws today and ways it can be accomplished by YOU. Sit back, relax, have a drink if you can, and listen to Brett and Rob extol the power of the people. Resources Mentioned In This Episode: How Alexander Hamilton Screwed Up America by Brion McClanahan Nullification by Tom Woods This Episode's Drinks of Choice: The Famous Grouse Smoky Black Blended Scotch Whisky Tomatin Dualchas Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tim Smith's Climax Moonshine Hamley American Straight Wheat Whiskey Ardbeg Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Speyburn Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky Jefferson's Very Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky Barrel Hitch American Whiskey
In this episode, the Dynamically Drunken Duo continue the theme of Liberty Definitions that they started in Episode 014. They attempt to define the following lesser-known liberty-movement terms: Libertarian Personal Political Historical Anarchism Anarcho-Capitalism Anarcho-Communism Anarchists Minarchism Conservatarian Paleolibertarian Voluntarism So sit back, relax, have a drink if you are able, and listen to Brett and Rob define some terms from the liberty movement that you may or may not have heard before. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey
As promised, this is the Episode that Brett and Rob recorded near the end of September 2017 before the show had to take an unexpected hiatus. In this local episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, the Dynamically Drunken Duo tackle a couple of new laws passed by the Oregon legislature recently. House Bill 3391 (Free Abortions For All) Senate Bill 719 (Gun Confiscation Bill) They also poke fun at the Oregon Government Waste Hotline, which not surprisingly, wastes money. Sit back, relax, have a drink if you can, and listen as Brett and Rob rant about the stupidity of the Oregon government. Website Mentioned: Repeal 719 Campaign This Episode's Drink of Choice: Crater Lake Handcrafted American Rye Whiskey of Bend, Oregon
The Dynamically Drunken Duo are back with the first episode of 2018, and it's the first time they've been together to record since late September. Why such a long time between new episodes? The guys explain it all for you. Rob hogs the microphone most of the time, as the most number of things have happened to him in those days, but Brett puts in his two cents worth, as he is always the yang to Rob's yin. Sit back, relax, have a drink if you are able, and listen to the guys wax philosophical about why downsizing can be a good thing. This Episdode's Drink of Choice: Tomatin Dualchas Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky If you are wondering what happened to Episode 022, no worries. It's still in the queue to be released. The guys decided to release Episode 023 first, as it was recorded most recently and has more current material. Episode 022 is a local episode that was recorded back in September. Once Rob gets off his lazy bum and finishes the edit, it will be released.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL! It's been a while since we have heard from the Dynamically Drunken duo (close to two months...c'mon guys!). It has been a very challenging two months in the personal lives of the guys. Brett has been dealing with stress-related health problems that have caused him to quit his part-time job and Rob has recently been informed that he will be downsized from his full-time job early in the new year. These two factors combined has drastically slowed the production of this show. This episode was originally recorded in mid-September 2017 for release in the first week of October. You will finally get to hear it. In this episode of Half-Hour Liberty Hour, Brett and Rob crack open a bottle of whisky and talk about the infighting that has been going on within the Liberty movement, especially within the LP. They talk about why it's reprehensible, why it is posturing by the leadership, why they believe it is occurring, and what should be done about it. Sit back, relax, have a drink, and keep your brain turned on for this discussion. Jason Stapleton's Interview with Nick Sarwark This Episode's Drink of Choice: Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey
After a long protracted illness on Brett's part, the Dynamically Drunken Duo are back to tackle the Global Basic Income Guarantee (aka GBIG). Nothing says elitist socialist plot like "free money". Somebody's gotta pay for it, and it's gonna be you. Sit tight, as we are releasing our longest episode to date (OK...so the guys couldn't determine what they wanted to edit out). This Episode's Drink of Choice: Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Hey Everyone! It's been a trying past couple of weeks as Rob was sick (run-down from all his jobs) and after he was better, Brett became sick (also run-down from all his jobs). To keep your liberty-mindedness sharp, here are the two additional objections from the Right that were cut for time from Episode 017 - Common Objections From The Right. Obviously, the two and the others from that episode are not the only objections from the Right, but they are ones that we commonly hear from folks when they learn that we are libertarians. 5. Libertarians would let foreign countries put Americans out of work 6. Libertarians would leave our borders open It also includes the portion from the end of the show where we summarize the episode. It's a good thing that the Maker's was flowing...
In this episode, Brett and Rob have a third discussion of questions they have been asked in the past by people who are curious about libertarianism. They get liquored up and try to answer the following: Can I Be a libertarian and Support Public Schooling? Can I Be a libertarian and Work for the Government? Can I Be a libertarian and Be Conservative? Can I Be a libertarian and Support Gun Control? Due to the whisky being consumed, Rob goes on two mini rants and Brett promises a topic for a future episode. Have a drink and listen to the Dynamically Drunken Duo answer these questions. This Episode's Drink of Choice: McClelland's Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky A special mention to J-Dawg P. Thanks for joining us during the recording of this episode. You are welcome back any time.
In their first (real) purposeful bonus episodelet, Brett and Rob discuss and respond to the recent terror attacks in Europe. They explain how both the left and right want to violate the NAP and bring a whole host of the same type of economic migrants that are causing trouble in Europe to the United States. They have their own reasons for doing such, and the guys discuss these reasons. Nothing good can come out of it.
It's been a while since Brett and Rob dusted off the ol' Two Cows joke, so here's another discussion using the joke. In this alcohol-fueled episode, the Dynamically Drunken Duo revisit it, but they focus on the mythical wonderfulness of Pure Democracy. Listen as Brett and Rob smack around Pure Democracy and unmask it for what it truly is (hint: it is very close to another form of governance that rhymes with "Bocialism"). This Episode's Drink of Choice: Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
In this Bonus Episodelet, trimmed for content from Episode 014 - Liberty Definitions, Brett and Rob got sidetracked when talking about negative vs. positive rights. Rob reads from FDR's Second Bill of Rights, a progressive statist dream he launched in 1944, that has had yet another rebirth in the past couple of years. Brett and Rob talk about how terrible these "rights" are and how what was once new is new again. It's a good thing that the Auchentoshan is flowing...
Sorry for the delay in uploading this episode, but Brett and Rob, as they explained in Episode 016 - Why We're Different, are working stiffs, and work and life got in the way of getting this episode out on schedule. Rob is working to get the other two recorded episodes edited and ready for release, as well as a few more bonus episodelets. In this alcohol-fueled episode, Brett and Rob, in the spirit of Episode 007 - Common Objections from the Left, are back and slaying common objections from the Right. The Dynamically Drunken Duo tackle: 1. Libertarians are too liberal 2. Libertarians will allow drugs to flow through the streets 3. You can't just let people do what they want 4. Libertarians are isolationists 7. Libertarians don't believe in a strong national defense 8. Libertarians don't support the troops 9. Libertarians wouldn't waterboard a terrorist to keep Americans from dying 10. What about patents and copyrights? You may have noticed that #5 and #6 are missing from this list. They were trimmed in order to keep the length of the episode to a reasonable amount of time. They will appear in a future bonus episodelet. If you are wondering if the audio quality may sound "off", and/or if you happen to hear scraping sounds, you are correct in your assumption. The guys were unable to record in their usual location and had to record in Brett's kitchen. The scraping sounds you may hear are Brett's dog on his hardwood floors. The more you drink while listening, the less of those sounds you will hear... Relax, have a drink with us, and see that the Right is just as loony as the Left. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky
This is a very different episode from what the listeners of Half-Hour Liberty Hour are accustomed to. This is partially why it is being released on Sunday instead of the usual Friday release schedule. In this episode, Brett and Rob lay aside most of the philosophical discussions of liberty and focus on what it is that makes Half-Hour Liberty Hour different. In a world full of liberty podcasts, you have many choices. So what is it that makes Half-Hour Liberty Hour different from those other podcasts? Have a listen and you will see. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Jefferson's Very Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky
Rob is back from vacation, so the Dynamically Drunken Duo were able to record a new episode. Today, Brett and Rob discuss the $3.8 billion boondoggle of a tax plan the Oregon Legislature has passed in order to "fund" repairs to the Oregon highway system. They talk about the new taxes that are being levied (including a first-ever partial sales tax against the will of the people), tolling of the bridges and the Interstates in Portland, and how the Legislature will probably stay true to form and blow the money on other projects that the government wants to spend the money on. Brett and Rob go on a rant about how the private sector could do a much better job building and repairing roads with a much smaller budget, and discuss the possibly-inspired-by-a-six-year-old-child plan to extend the Portland surface streets over the top of I-5 in the Rose Quarter. If you weren't drinking before listening to this episode, you will probably be by the end. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Speyburn Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Nullification by Tom Woods Human Action by Ludwig von Mises
This bonus episodelet is a bit that was cut for time and subject matter from Episode 013 - Who Would Our Presidential Cabinet Be? In it, Brett and Rob talk about executive actions and other overreach by executive-branch created government agencies with the implication that their actions add up to less liberty for all. It did not fit with the flow of that episode, but it gives insight into why the Dynamically Drunken Duo chose to only have the original five Cabinet positions if they were president. Join Brett and Rob, only 2 oz into the Barrel Hitch Whiskey, as they badmouth FDR, Nixon, Carter, and modern schooling.
In this alcohol-fueled episode, Brett and Rob define and explain a number of terms that they and other liberty-loving people throw around that the average person may not understand. They drink quite a bit and have some fun covering: Negative Rights Positive Rights The Five Principles We Believe In Right to Life Right to Liberty Right to Own Property Right to Self-Preservation Free Market Capitalism The Non-Aggression Principle (NAP...aka "The Silver Rule") Aggression Personal Responsibility Taxation as Theft Tolerance Freedom This Episode's Drink of Choice: Auchentoshan Single Malt Scotch Whisky - American Oak
In this fun episode, Brett and Rob get liquored up while daydreaming about who they would have for a presidential Cabinet if they were ever elected (ha!) to the Presidency. They decided to pare down the Cabinet to the original five positions. Brett professes his love for his wife, while Rob professes that Hunter McGrady has an open invitation to be his First Lady. Here is what the Dynamically Drunken Duo have for members of their Cabinet: Secretary of State: Ron Paul Secretary of the Treasury: Bob Murphy Secretary of Peace (Defense): Rob -- Rand Paul, Brett -- General James Mattis Attorney General: Joe Becker Vice-President: Thomas Massie As a non-Cabinet position, the National Security Advisor would be Scott Horton. Rob also gives a very special mention about who he would like to hire out of his own pocket as an advisor. Listen to find out who it is. As usual, Brett and Rob get sidetracked and talk about the evils of inflation and the need for sound monetary policy, but you expect that when they have four or more ounces of whiskey in them. They recommend you listen to The Jason Stapleton Show's Episode 608 to learn about the Burrito Index and how it tracks inflation better than the Feds ever could. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Barrel Hitch Oregon Oak American Whiskey (meh)
Hey Everyone! We're back! After two weeks of conflicting schedules, Brett and Rob are back at what they do best, drinking and talking about political philosophy. In this alcohol-fueled episode, the Dynamically Drunken Duo lay into issues they see with the Libertarian Party. Choosing candidates based upon name recognition instead of principles Poor messaging Nerds running the show Freaks on the news Don't take elections seriously enough Party officials say stupid things publicly If you would like to check out what the inner workings of the LP convention is like, we highly recommend listening to Episode 906 of the Tom Woods Show. It will blow your mind with the behind-the-scenes look from a former LP VP candidate. This Episode's Drink of Choice: Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey (in the fancy-schmancy bottle)
Hello to all our listeners! Brett and Rob truly apologize, but they were unable to make their schedules coincide to be able to record an episode for this week. They're just a couple of guys whose real lives got in the way of their fun. In its stead, Rob slapped together a faux announcement to a crowd explaining why there is no new episode this week. Brett and Rob thought it would be more polite to inform you that there is no new episode this week than to let you wonder if they've disappeared. See what happens when they're sober?
This bonus episodelet is a bit cut from Episode 011 - Two Cows and Socialism due to time constraints. The Cost Calculation Problem has always been a point of contention for Socialists as they believe that the State should set prices, no matter what the cost of production is. Using two real-life examples, Brett and Rob explain (rather easily) how market forces signal producers to produce and at what price goods can be sold. This is known as the Cost Calculation Problem. Join them, as they are about 3oz into the Ardbeg, and get an easy-to-understand explanation of an economic reality.
