The Achiever's Curse is a deadly one. It starts subtle at first. But left unchecked long enough, it seeps into every aspect of your life, stealing joy and fulfillment every step of the way. Too many achievers don't realize this insidious curse until they feel the intense pangs of regret on their deathbed. Far too late, in other words. I want to help you avoid this terrible fate… I have read well over 1,000 books in my life - spanning across psychology, philosophy, leadership, business, religion, spirituality, personal growth, and more. Most of them were interesting. A few of them were inspiring. But only a handful got me to think so deeply that they didn't just change my thinking, but changed how I live in the world. In this episode, I share this odd collection of 12 life-altering books, to help you answer life's most difficult questions before it's too late to live your life in a completely different way. Listen now. Show Highlights Include: How the ambitious goals that require intense work ethic, study habits, and dedication also lead to misery and depression and even suicidal thoughts when they're unconsciously driven by this (1:43) 3 tough questions most people never ask themselves (and 12 recommended books that act like your map to answering these existential questions in a way that fulfills your soul) (2:52) The insidious way avoiding death also means you avoid life (and one book that allows you to confront death, and thus, life) (4:40) The “Anti-Permanent” plan for living life fully immersed in the moment instead of silently being controlled by fear, anxiety, and shame (9:55) Why an obsession with productivity is a defense mechanism in disguise (most people realize this far too late when the pangs of regret are unbearable) (11:31) The terrible trap of saving most people fall into that steals fulfillment from your life even when it's right in your hands (12:58) A weird way to build quiet, immovable confidence by defining morality (14:46) How the realization that meritocracy is a myth actually sets you up to finally quiet your subtle, but brutal toxic shame (29:22) Why play can save a dying marriage from divorce, a business on the verge of bankruptcy, and a cloud of depression from following you for life (33:17) David Tian's list of recommended readings can be found here: https://davidtianphd.com/recommended-readings/ For more about David Tian, go here: https://www.davidtianphd.com/about/ Want more success in leadership, deeper connections, or a greater sense of fulfillment? May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Over-drinking is usually a sign that our mental health is in need of some help. Over-drinking is a symptom. For a lot of my clients, it's a symptom of stress, high levels of anxiety, overwhelm, loneliness, grief, big painful life changes or traumatic events like a high conflict divorce or a major medical diagnoses. Using alcohol as a way to cope is a sign that your mental health could use some support. It's not something to be ashamed of or to keep a secret. If you've been struggling with alcohol use and you identify as someone who is using alcohol as a way to cope (or another sign is, finding it very hard to stop automatic behavior and can't identify the cause of your over-drinking) it's time to get help. Tune into this podcast episode and hear the intersections of mental health and over consumption of alcohol. Join me for The Pivot. For a lot of us—especially high-achieving women—ambition can feel like a double-edged sword. It drives us, fuels us, and pushes us forward. But it can also drain us, disconnect us, and quietly lead us away from who we really are. That's exactly why I invited Amina AITai back to the podcast. She's a holistic business and career coach, a chronic illness advocate, a proud immigrant, and one of the most grounded voices on what it means to live and lead with intention. In her new book, The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living, Amina unpacks the toxic side of ambition—and how to reclaim it in a way that actually serves you. We talk about the ambition myths that keep women stuck, the pressure to perform at all costs, and how to get out of the cycle of striving and back into alignment with what really matters. This isn't about playing small—it's about playing smart. Purposefully. Intuitively. Sustainably. In This Episode, We Cover: ✅ What the ambition trap is—and how to know if you're in it ✅ The difference between aligned ambition and external pressure ✅ Why burnout isn't a badge of honor ✅ Practices to reconnect with your brilliance and body ✅ The surprising role rest plays in achievement Ambition isn't the problem. The problem is chasing a version of success that was never really yours to begin with. It's time to stop striving and start living—from the inside out. Most of us say we want to grow. We want peace. Clarity. Success. A more aligned version of ourselves. But if we're honest, many of our daily choices still reflect the old version of who we've been clinging to chaos, reacting instead of responding, and starting our mornings in default mode.In this latest episode of Inspire Create Manifest, Joe Longo delivers a powerful message: The person you want to become is already within you, you have to act like them, starting now. Whether setting your alarm a little earlier, putting down the phone, or changing your morning inputs, the shift happens now, not someday in the future. This episode isn't just motivation, it's a practical call to action. Want to manifest more? Then become more. Today.Download the Simplicity Starter Kit Schedule Your Discovery Call
I am thrilled to have Amina AlTai here with me today to talk about her new book The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living, which is out May 13. Here's what I love about this book, among many things, honestly—it is billed as “the anti-hustle guide to getting what you really want,” and it delivers. If you are experiencing or have experienced burnout, overwork, and stress when it comes to your ambition, then this book is for you. This book helps us escape the ambition trap—and don't worry, Amina tells us in this episode what that is—and step instead into joy-filled work. This is such a great book and a great conversation! She has taught me that we can be ambitious and not sacrifice ourselves in the process. Hallelujah! It turns out that maybe we're not looking for money or status but really acceptance and belonging. I know I've outsourced my self-worth externally for a great many years, and spoiler alert—that doesn't work. If you, like me, are ready to reconcile your ambition, let's heal our core wounds and get to the other side together, escaping the ambition trap once and for all. Today Amina and I talk about why ambition is complicated, especially for historically excluded people; how ambition is not up and to the right and isn't a linear journey; why being an ambitious woman is somehow still not acceptable, even in 2025; the difference between painful ambition and purposeful ambition; how hustle culture became so pervasive, anyway; what the resentment line is—trust me, you'll want to know all about that; and what healthy ambition looks like and a microstep we can take even as soon as today to get there. Amina is an executive coach, leadership trainer, and chronic illness advocate that has been featured everywhere from The New York Times to NBC, CBS, Forbes, and more. She's an expert-in-residence at Entrepreneur Magazine and was named one of Success Magazine's Women of Influence, and she's partnered with companies like Google, Snap, Roku, and Outdoor Voices. I not only enjoyed this conversation, but I deeply appreciated it. The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living by Amina AlTai

Send us a textWhat if the secret to peace wasn't in doing more, fixing more, or controlling more—but in letting go?In this soulful episode, we explore the liberating power of surrender and the radical shift that happens when we release the need to manage every outcome and emotion.Drawing on the empowering ideas of Abraham Hicks and Mel Robbins, I unpack why trying to control others or "get it right" is often a mask for deeper fears—and how letting things (and people) be exactly as they are could be the most powerful step toward freedom. You'll hear a personal story from the London Underground that changed the way I see judgment forever, and we'll explore how becoming a thermostat (not a thermometer) in life allows you to create emotional alignment regardless of circumstance.✨ Expect soulful insights, a practical technique to transform your relationships, and one simple question that can turn tension into trust. This week's invitation: Practice letting life be—messy, magical, and completely out of your hands—and notice what unfolds when you do.Support the show
You are in for a very special treat on the podcast today! I had the honor to interview my dear client, Suzanne. Suzanne joined my 6-month Stop Over-drinking and Start Living program almost 4 years ago and I've been working with her ever since. She shares how she kicked alcohol to the curb (although that was never her goal!) and then STARTED LIVING! We go into what Suzanne was feeling before she decided to try coaching with me, she had deep beliefs of 'feeling 2nd' and 'not good enough' and 'I'm a failure,' that ran the entire course of her life. She ultimately decided she had nothing to lose and took a leap of faith and to say she's an example of what is possible is a complete understatement of the 360 transformation she has had. She also talks about the difference between therapy and coaching, which I love how she explains it. She shares how powerful learning how to manage her mind is and how in such a short amount of time, she's completely transformed her life, grown her business, fallen in love and .... I'll let you find out the rest when you listen to this special episode. We can learn so much from Suzanne and her deep wisdom in choosing HERSELF and going after the life she knew she wanted. She leaves you with it's never to late and you are not too old. At 68 years old is when she began this journey and now almost 72, she is just getting started! Also, she shares what she is proudest of the most and it will touch your heart instantly! Thank you Suzanne, it's an honor and I can't wait to see you soon!!! Are you being the kind of judge you'd actually want? Or are you stacking the scale with every little “failure” and ignoring all your wins? This week, I'm showing you how to shift that inner justice system—so you can rebuild self-trust and actually see your progress. Tune in and take a moment to actually weigh the evidence—like a real judge would—we'd likely see the wins far outnumber the fails. And here's the kicker: when we judge ourselves unfairly, we stop trusting ourselves. We stop seeing progress. And we stop moving forward. Be the kind of judge you'd want. Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes STOP Searching for Your Why and START Living April 25, 2025 | Episode - 5080 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Ever had someone go "coachy coach" on you without permission? In this episode, Scott shares a funny encounter with a life coach who desperately wanted to uncover his "why." Scott challenges the conventional wisdom that you need a clearly defined purpose to achieve your goals. Instead, he offers a refreshing perspective: sometimes you want something because you want it, and that's reason enough to go after it! Featured Story Scott recounts being ambushed by a life coach who kept pressing him about his "why," asking what's driving him and his inner purpose. While Scott acknowledges the importance of knowing your motivation, he shares his real-world observation that thousands accomplish amazing things without clearly articulating their purpose. As Scott puts it in his trademark straight-talk style: "Real people just do stuff. They're just living." Key Takeaways Finding your "why" isn't a prerequisite for success – many people achieve great things by simply taking action on what they want. Your purpose and passion naturally evolve – what drives you today might change tomorrow, and that's perfectly normal. Sometimes the real reason you pursue a goal isn't what you think it is – your true "why" might be hiding from you until you're already on the journey. Memorable Quotes "If you are living your life in search of your why, you ain't never going to find it." "Sometimes you just find yourself doing something that makes you happy and has an impact and kind of checks off all the boxes." "Every single goal you ever wanted is incredibly complicated. It sounded simple when you thought about it." Scott's Three-Step Approach Recognize what makes you happy and excited, rather than following prescribed paths others think you should take. Focus on the impact you want, not the specific method – stay flexible about how you deliver your value to the world. Trust your instincts when something feels right, even if you can't articulate exactly why you're drawn to it. Connect With Me Search for The Daily Boost on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
