East Orosi's Long Struggle for Water, Part 2: The Role of Community Utility Districts (Encore) Description

Making Contact

Last week, we visited a community in California's Central Valley called East Orosi, which has been fighting for clean water for over 20 years. This week we turn our attention to their sewage system, which is also falling apart. Why has it been so difficult for East Orosi to get clean drinking water and fix its sewage problems? To answer that question, we take a look at the community utility districts that run sewage and water in unincorporated towns all across California. We'll discuss their problems as well as ways to save them. This show first aired in August 2024. Josh and David analyze the Trump administration's contentious decision to cancel a DOJ agreement addressing Lowndes County's severe sewage issues, linking it to the anti-DEI agenda and its harmful real-world consequences. They also scrutinize State Representative Corey Harbison's prolonged absence from the Legislature while still drawing a salary, sparking a debate on accountability and the problematic practice of voting by proxy. Then, immigration attorney Ruby Adams provides insight into the pervasive fear within immigrant communities, the challenges of navigating the legal system under the current administration, and the alarming implications of disregarding due process exemplified by cases like Mr. Kilmar Abrego Garcia. She touches on the chilling effect on reporting crimes and accessing education due to this environment of fear. Finally, David offers a "hot take" connecting the past handling of Osama Bin Laden to present-day concerns about due process erosion. 4.14.2025 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: DOJ ends raw sewage settlement, Crockett rips GOP's dangerous health agenda, El Salvador Deportation In 2023, the Department of Justice identified a pattern of neglect by Alabama's Department of Public Health, which has contributed to a decades-old water and sewage crisis in the state's "Black Belt," specifically in Lowndes County. Now, the MAGA administration is terminating the settlement that was reached to address the county's water issues. I will speak with the Rural Development Manager of the Equal Justice Initiative about how this decision will continue to affect Black citizens in Alabama. The false narrative that noncitizens were voting led to the passage of the SAVE Act, which requires documentary proof of citizenship to register or update voter information. We will discuss with the Policy Council from the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law the implications of this law on voters. In tonight's Crockett Chronicles, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett calls out MAGA Republicans for turning public health into a partisan circus. So far, the administration seems to be slow-walking the process, dodging accountability for the fact that Abrego Garcia was never afforded his due process rights, a core American principle. Andrew and Mary go on to explain each consecutive government response, and two habeas petitions that have been granted a TRO since last week's Supreme Court decision. Trump DOJ Ends Civil Rights Sewage Deal Protecting Black Alabama Residents

The Trump administration just flushed the nation's first environmental justice, civil rights settlement, literally. The Department of Justice has terminated a historic agreement that aimed to fix raw sewage issues in Alabama's majority-Black Lowndes County. This follows President Donald Trump's new executive order banning all federal programs tied to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), including environmental justice. The settlement, reached under the Biden administration, required Alabama to address unsanitary conditions that left poor Black families living with human waste in their yards due to failing or non-existent sewage systems. It wasn't symbolic — it was about survival. Under the Biden-era settlement, the DOJ had even agreed to pause criminal penalties against families too poor to fix their own septic systems. But now, Trump's DOJ says the deal was tainted by DEI preferences. The state says it might continue the work as funding allows, but without federal pressure, the pace is — of course — as slow as the soil is thick. Learn more about your ad choices. He has pursued a lonely course of bipartisanship by meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago before his Inauguration, joining Truth Social, and voting to confirm Pam Bondi as Attorney General—the only Democrat to do so. But, despite Trump's relatively high approval ratings, he lambasts the Administration for the “chaos” it is currently sowing in America. Sutton Water Reclamation Facility, addressing rising landfill costs and limited disposal options. The incinerators, decommissioned in 2015 due to stricter EPA standards, will now meet updated guidelines, reducing sludge volume by 90%. Public concerns about emissions remain, but officials emphasize stricter monitoring and compliance. Alternatives like land application face scrutiny over potential health risks, while landfill costs have surged. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with public input sessions planned to address community concerns. STORY 2: Cobb Inmate Accused of Identity Theft Stephanie Leah Cherry, 22, of Austell, is accused of using a victim's Sheriff’s Office ID to access their Inmate Detention Account at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, transferring funds to her own account between Dec. 16-25, 2024. This largest graduating class began with 35 participants, focusing on topics like family roles, cultural influences, and parenting strategies. Graduate Faith Williams highlighted how the course helped her maintain relationships with her children while incarcerated. The initiative also offers GED programs, anger management, and more, aiming to reduce recidivism. Chief Deputy Rhonda Anderson encouraged graduates to stay present in their children’s lives. STORY 5: Georgia Gas Prices Jump Georgia's average gas price has risen to $3.00 per gallon, with Cobb County slightly higher at $3.09, up 15 cents in two weeks, according to AAA. Seasonal refinery maintenance, a switch to summer fuel blends, and a California refinery outage are contributing to the increase. State prices are 6 cents higher than a month ago but 17 cents lower than last year. The most expensive metro areas include Atlanta ($3.06), while the cheapest are in Dalton ($2.91). AAA advises drivers to save by using fuel programs, paying with cash, and maintaining efficient driving habits. Break: STORY 6: Whataburger Withdraws Application for Atlanta Road Location Whataburger has withdrawn its request for a sixth Cobb County location on Atlanta Road near I-285. The fast food chain planned to combine two properties for the site but paused to reassess traffic impacts and community-requested design changes. Local residents, including those from West Village Smyrna, opposed the proposal, citing concerns over traffic, safety, noise, and property values. They suggested changes like reorienting the building and limiting hours. While residents are pleased with the withdrawal, Whataburger may reapply in the future. The chain currently operates three Cobb locations, with two more approved but not yet built. STORY 7: Cobb Approves Lost Mountain Road Subdivision The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a 27-home subdivision on Lost Mountain Road in a 4-0 vote. Traton Homes will develop the 40.5-acre lot, with 18 of the homes on the southern half requiring rezoning. Homes will range from 2,000 to 3,589 square feet, offering more affordable and varied housing options. To address neighbors' concerns, Traton agreed to a 50-foot buffer, a vinyl-coated chain link fence, and stormwater management measures. Commissioner Keli Gambrill praised the compromise, noting it was a better fit than previous proposals for the area.
