Labour's leader says Te Pati Māori should focus on the issues most New Zealanders care about. Parliament last week voted to hand down the harshest suspensions in history to three MPs over a haka performed during the Treaty Principles Bill vote. Labour's Willie Jackson and Adrian Rurawhe argued the punishments were too harsh, but also suggested the Party could compromise or say sorry. Chris Hipkins told John MacDonald housing, health, and education are the main things Māori around the country raise with him. He says that Te Pati Māori made their point around the haka, but he thinks people want to see them get back to debating the big issues now. In this punchy and provocative episode of Mark and Pete, we dive headfirst into the swirling chaos of British politics, public utilities, and corporate excess. First up: Attorney General Richard Hermer finds himself in hot water after comparing the Reform Party and Tory ECHR policies to Nazi ideology. Was it a bold moral stand—or a clumsy rhetorical nosedive? Next, we wade through the murky waters of Thames Water's £122.7 million fine, the biggest in UK history, as they continue to leak both sewage and credibility while drowning in £20 billion of debt. Is failure now the British benchmark for business? Finally, we take off (in budget class) to dissect Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary's eye-watering €100 million bonus. In a time of rising fares and falling trust, should we celebrate his capitalist cunning or question the altitude of his ethics? With satire, insight, and listener interaction, this episode invites you to write in: What reality show would you create featuring these headline-makers? What would your postcard from “Blunderland” say? Last week, we visited a community in California's Central Valley called East Orosi, which has been fighting for clean water for over 20 years. This week we turn our attention to their sewage system, which is also falling apart. Why has it been so difficult for East Orosi to get clean drinking water and fix its sewage problems? To answer that question, we take a look at the community utility districts that run sewage and water in unincorporated towns all across California. We'll discuss their problems as well as ways to save them. This show first aired in August 2024. Could a water crisis be in the pipeline for Aotearoa? Sewage contaminating Oyster farms in Auckland, as well as more periods of extreme rainfall due to climate change, has highlighted the lack of investment in water infrastructure over the past couple decades. Dan Hikuroa, an associate professor at Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland, upholds a traditional Māori view of water as a sacred taonga, as something to be treasured, rather than being framed as a property right and commodity. To talk about what we should change to protect our water in Aotearoa, Producer Max spoke to Dan Hikuroa.
Wizz Air takes pride in having the lowest carbon footprint per passenger and kilometer in the airline industry, 52g, number that it expects to bring further down as it renews the fleet with larger, denser and more efficient aircraft. But fleet renewal alone won't do the trick. In fact, “fleet” is just one of the three “Fs” that the pan-European ultra-low-cost airline relies on to get to Net Zero by 2050, even in a context of growing air traffic.“Footprint”, that is, efficiency improvements in the way aircraft are operates, is another, relatively minor “F” in this vision. But the bulk of the carbon reduction will rest upon the massive use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).Since production of SAF is currently small, Wizz Air has decided to take a proactive stance and become a direct investor in a number of innovative SAF projects, one of the most promising of which is Firefly, a British startup that turns sewage into SAF.In this episode of the podcast, Yvonne Moynihan, head of ESG and sustainability at Wizz Air, and James Hygate OBE, founder and CEO of Firefly, share the (virtual) stage to explain this project in detail. We will talk about how Firefly technology works, how scalable it is and how does this project fit into Wizz Air's SAF-sourcing ans well as in the airline's broader decarbonization plans. Tune in for a fascinating chat about one of the most interesting SAF projects right now in Europe and how it will help Wizz Air strengthen its sustainability credentials even further…
Hekpoort residents are in an epic battle to get the Mogale City Council to stop an influx of tens of thousands of apparently unemployed vagrants in the area. In this interview with BizNews, attorney Christopher Bean describes the drama surrounding the council's building of 208 low-cost houses in an area where there was an invasion in 2019, and around which between 150 000 and 200,000 people are living in squatter camps without facilities. To add to the crisis, local residents have said that if outsiders get those houses, they're going to burn them down. “…it's no longer a question of providing housing for local people. It's now using this whole area to relocate thousands of people from the Krugersdorp area to another place where there's no jobs, where there's no accommodation, so they have to build shacks. There's no water, there's no sewage, there's no schools, there's no nothing.” Meanwhile, crime has spiralled with one holiday resort being hit with 12 armed robberies in 12 months. “There are about three security companies operating in this area and everybody who is on the farms is armed…”. Bean says they are hoping for a roundtable solution that will become a settlement agreement that “I know will apply in so many other cases all over the whole country….when there is this type of quote, invasion, semi-invasion, no invasion has taken place yet…have some set of rules as to who comes there, what happens when they get here, what are the facilities that we're providing, what opportunities to make a human kind of organisation rather than a squatter camp”.

Josh and David analyze the Trump administration's contentious decision to cancel a DOJ agreement addressing Lowndes County's severe sewage issues, linking it to the anti-DEI agenda and its harmful real-world consequences. They also scrutinize State Representative Corey Harbison's prolonged absence from the Legislature while still drawing a salary, sparking a debate on accountability and the problematic practice of voting by proxy. Then, immigration attorney Ruby Adams provides insight into the pervasive fear within immigrant communities, the challenges of navigating the legal system under the current administration, and the alarming implications of disregarding due process exemplified by cases like Mr. Kilmar Abrego Garcia. She touches on the chilling effect on reporting crimes and accessing education due to this environment of fear. Finally, David offers a "hot take" connecting the past handling of Osama Bin Laden to present-day concerns about due process erosion. 4.14.2025 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: DOJ ends raw sewage settlement, Crockett rips GOP's dangerous health agenda, El Salvador Deportation In 2023, the Department of Justice identified a pattern of neglect by Alabama's Department of Public Health, which has contributed to a decades-old water and sewage crisis in the state's "Black Belt," specifically in Lowndes County. Now, the MAGA administration is terminating the settlement that was reached to address the county's water issues. I will speak with the Rural Development Manager of the Equal Justice Initiative about how this decision will continue to affect Black citizens in Alabama. The false narrative that noncitizens were voting led to the passage of the SAVE Act, which requires documentary proof of citizenship to register or update voter information. The US government's mistaken removal of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador has captured national attention, and it's as stunning as it is heart breaking. So Mary and Andrew dedicate the bulk of this week's episode to what's happened since the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration must follow the lower court's order to facilitate his return. So far, the administration seems to be slow-walking the process, dodging accountability for the fact that Abrego Garcia was never afforded his due process rights, a core American principle. Andrew and Mary go on to explain each consecutive government response, and two habeas petitions that have been granted a TRO since last week's Supreme Court decision. Before wrapping up, they highlight the cancelling of a landmark civil rights deal in Alabama, and Trump's latest retribution in action-- targeting individuals, the Associated Press and Harvard.Further reading: Here is Mary's OpEd in the Washington Post: It's time to compel Justice officials to testify on Abrego García.And please vote for your favorite MSNBC podcasts in this year's Webby Awards:Prosecuting Donald Trump in the Podcasts - Crime & Justice category: VOTE HEREWhy Is This Happening? The Trump administration just flushed the nation's first environmental justice, civil rights settlement, literally. The Department of Justice has terminated a historic agreement that aimed to fix raw sewage issues in Alabama's majority-Black Lowndes County. This follows President Donald Trump's new executive order banning all federal programs tied to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), including environmental justice. The settlement, reached under the Biden administration, required Alabama to address unsanitary conditions that left poor Black families living with human waste in their yards due to failing or non-existent sewage systems. It wasn't symbolic — it was about survival. Under the Biden-era settlement, the DOJ had even agreed to pause criminal penalties against families too poor to fix their own septic systems. But now, Trump's DOJ says the deal was tainted by DEI preferences. The state says it might continue the work as funding allows, but without federal pressure, the pace is — of course — as slow as the soil is thick. Learn more about your ad choices. Since the election, Senator John Fetterman—once a great hope of progressives—has conspicuously blamed Democrats for the electoral loss. Fetterman tells David Remnick that the Democratic Party discouraged male voters, particularly white men. He has pursued a lonely course of bipartisanship by meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago before his Inauguration, joining Truth Social, and voting to confirm Pam Bondi as Attorney General—the only Democrat to do so. But, despite Trump's relatively high approval ratings, he lambasts the Administration for the “chaos” it is currently sowing in America. Fetterman sympathizes with voters' widespread disgust with contemporary politicking. “Unlimited money has turned all of us in some way into all OnlyFans models,” he says. “We're all just online hustling for money.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
