This week marks the first week of our MayGay Shark month here on Slashers Podcast! Today we kick off this month with our dear friend Micah from Damn That's Scary podcast to discuss 2018's The Meg. If you all recall, or were like Ade and Micah thinking this movie came out like a year ago, this 2018 film centers around a giant Megalodon shark and the people it picks off. It was directed by Jon Turtletaub, who you may know directed classics like National Treasure, Cool Runnings, and 3 Ninjas. The film is loosely based on the novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, written by Steve Alten. It stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis. There is currently a sequel in development and should be released by August of next year, but until then, listen in to all of the juicy details of this week's episode, and feel free to chime in if there are any other shark horror flicks you'd like us to cover. On episode #116 of the Geek Confidential podcast, Luke Kerr, Mo Walker and Dan Pearce react to the news that Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow have been cancelled by The CW. Dan is in his feelings over the loss of Legends of Tomorrow. Did the cast become too unwieldy? How did the budget sustain so many characters with super powers. Why were Ava and Gary allowed to devour the show? Was the writing on the wall for one or both of these shows? Did Batwoman ever find its footing creatively after Ruby Rose exited? Did it get distracted by supporting character storylines? What do these two cancellations mean for remaining superhero shows on The CW: The Flash, Superman and Lois, Stargirl and Naomi? This week: getting personal with Nigel Stanislaus, a Singaporean-Chinese hair and makeup artist living in Melbourne whose celebrity client list spans Bella and Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner , John Legend , Jenna Dewan, Tina Arena, Troye Sivan, Olivia Newton John, Peaches Geldoff, Ruby Rose and Michael Bublé. Born and raised by strong, resilient women, Nigel was compelled into the artistry life by the glamour, the strength, the flexibility and the attitude on how to survive, and how to thrive! With an impressive repertoire of clients, industry experience and portfolio of work: Editorials include L'Officiel , Harpers Bazaar, Elle, & Marie Claire. Former Mr Maybelline and Asia's Next Top Model Judge. NYC resident and makeup director to almost 200 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. Whether you're just starting out or have been in the industry for a long time, tune in now, check out the key takeaways and subscribe for future podcasts below. KEY TAKEAWAYS: SET YOURSELF A GOAL Whether you're working to pay bills, unleashing your creativity or aiming to be top dog - it's important to set yourself a goal. Nigel believes that if you manifest things, life will take you there. Sure there's bound to be a few u-turns and bends in the road - but you will eventually get to your destination. Not sure where to start? For Nigel, it was the fear of failure that always pushed him to have a plan, show up, be present and be the absolute best that he could be. Start by writing out your goals for the next week, month or year ahead - and see where it takes you. LOVE WHAT YOU DO Artists love to be inspired by the world around them. Nigel is passionate about his work and enthuses that, ‘makeup should make you feel something, it should give you emotional energy - like you've been dancing for hours'. Our industry is tough, you need passion, skill and a whole lot of tenacity and grit to make it. Nigel (aka Mr Maybelline) always dons a big smile and love of learning. Inspired by boots he saw in Rome or flicking through instagram, Nigel's life goal is to teach kids who want to do makeup to know that it's a beauty blender. Whatever you're feeling - angry, sad, scared, hungry, excited - just paint it out. Use your passion, use your emotion to give your work substance and you'll always love what you do. “When people say, ‘oh, the glam is here' to me, it's not really like that. It's deeper, more personal... It's business for me, it's my career, it's my identity - it is so much more than just magnetic lashes or painting someone..” Nigel Stanislaus GIVING BACK (TO ARTISTS) Taking kids off the street as his assistant, Nigel boasts that the hard work and commitment from those who assisted him out of High School, are the ones to watch out for in the industry today. These kids are now directors, artists in demand, entrepreneurs of up and coming brands… Giving back to the community and having young artists coming up the ranks around you is so important. As a senior artist you can influence a lot of change. Having an assistant is really critical for your workload, but the role is also an important mentorship, showing them how to develop hair and makeup skills, as well as an understanding of the industry. Nigel confides that although he may not be the kindest mentor (in fact, many would argue he is quite militant), he is serious about his craft and had to fight to get where he is today. “I'm not your therapist and I'm not going to be your BFF. I'm here to work, you're here to work - let's get it sorted. You need to have thick skin and a good attitude. Don't even think about talking back to me with a potato cake in your hand, I will break you with my Tony Bianco heel!” Nigel Stanislaus Join TMI Email List Follow TMI on IG Follow Vanessa on IG Podcast Cheat Sheets Assisting Sign Up
There maybe no justice for the death of Ruby Rose Barrameda, after her body was found cemented in a steel drum and thrown into the Pacific Ocean. A special (belated) episode, meaning November is is still spooky month - which is Brooke's true nightmare. 127 Hours with a Film Kid: Brooke gives a quick IATSE update, followed by Netflix's employee walkout, and Ruby Rose's allegations against CW/WBTV. Us: A surprise pairing caused directly by Lindsey, we manage to discuss the reasons we don't want kids (mainly their ability to see shadow people), a new conspiracy Lindsey has concocted around the restaurant industry, and when is the time for men to stop being allowed to make decisions. Replicas: In a movie where there are literally no consequences despite setting up all of the immediate consequences, we discuss how a man ineptly tries to get away with murdering his entire family, despite not murdering his entire family. We also discover that while Lindsey may have a face-blindness for actors, it certainly is not height-blindness. Film Kids Giant Squids is produced and hosted by Lindsey Buttel and Brooke Hoppe. Once upon a time ...... A family walked into HMV and bought movies they'd never seen before. They took them on holiday, and watched them, then talked about them. Today we discuss Isla's pick - VANQUISH.They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but does that also apply to DVD's? Having struck out with Hummingbird last holiday, Isla tried to redeem herself by choosing a film staring Morgan Freeman, because Morgan Freeman would never make a bad film - would he?Does she make up for last holiday's faux pas? Is Morgan Freeman still putting out 'quality movies? Are subtitles expensive? How does a corrupt cop henchman have such a stunning jaw line and cheek bone structure on a policeman's wage?We discuss this, and more, and if you enjoyed our show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good. It's another week of MOVIES WE HATE month by going deep and swimming with the bottomless void that is Jason Statham and the rest of the cast that makes up the 2018 turkey The Meg. How on earth did we ever possibly get excited for this movie? Does Jason Statham take down the rest of the cast's acting ability throughout the film? Is the shark the best actor in the film? Who are the other actors? Why is Ruby Rose the worst? Is this just a complete remake of Deep Blue Sea? How does the tone of this film affect everything that happens? 0:24 BrentacPrimeI know you don't watch the show but I'm curious if you have any thoughts on "Batwoman" not recasting Kate Kane after Ruby Rose left, and creating a brand new character. Personally I'm opposed as I think they are throwing out basically the entire first season.3:08 BryanWhat is more common practice in something like a Marvel Studios or Star Wars project on how the cast/directors are paid? Do they have a flat fee or are they paid on how well a film performs?4:40 StevenIs it possible for a streaming service to recover from a bad launch? For instance, HBO Max definitely has room to improve, but will it be too hard to recover from a bad start? I wasn't streaming when Netflix and Hulu first started, so I don't remember if they had a bumpy start. By contrast, how did Disney + ensure they would have a successful launch (outside of standard connection and buffering on the first day)?15:19 StevenOn the flip side of that: do you wonder if streaming is just moving towards recreating the cable TV experience as it becomes more likely that most streaming services will have ads or ad supported versions available?23:32 Mookie JohnsonDo you consider Poison Ivy to be a villain?25:54 Michael WeaselboyDo you think Ewan Mcgrgor will be "aged up" to play Obiwan in the Obiwan series??27:26 StevenPretend you have seen your last movie in a movie theater. You are preparing your home theater setup. What are the essentials, and what are some big “wishlist” items you would save up for to enhance that experience?33:58 BryanHave you watched The Umbrella Academy? What did you think of it?34:43 Anthony LawreyCan you divulge on the details of your Birds of Prey set visit? I remember you spoke of it being a scene that made it very clear of its R rating...just curious if you could give more details about it now. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
