Superhero Therapy: How We Can Cope with Ongoing Global Trauma

Diving into Healing

Guest Host Dr. Monica Hinton Guest Dr. Janina Scarlet Nearly 40% of trauma survivors drop out of therapy because they find it “too distressing.” Many also might struggle with being able to trust their therapist or find a way to express what they are going through. When trauma survivors turn to loved ones for support, many are invalidated or shamed about their reactions to their traumatic experiences. As a result, many trauma survivors experience pervasive feelings of loneliness. Some scientists call loneliness the new epidemic, while others dub loneliness “The New Smoking.” Worldwide loneliness rates have skyrocketed prior to the COVID pandemic and continue to do so. In addition to the global spikes in suicide rates, loneliness has been found to negatively impact the human immune and cardiovascular system in a similar way as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day or daily alcohol abuse. Hence, many trauma survivors turn to TV shows, books, movies, or video games for comfort as a way of managing loneliness and finding a sense of connection and belonging, especially when lacking these kinds of meaningful connections in real life. The connections that many trauma survivors forge with fictional TV shows, books, and video game characters can serve as meaningful social support systems. Many therapists and educators might believe that playing video games, reading comic books, and watching television shows are harmful to people's well-being. Thus, many well-intentioned providers and/or family members might discourage and even criticize the trauma survivor's reliance on fictional connections for comfort without realizing their potentially life-saving nature. However, more recent studies demonstrate that video games and television shows have helped people to better manage their mental health during the COVID pandemic, as well as during major life stressors, such as when undergoing a loss or a major surgery. Other studies show that popular culture can help people to become more compassionate, feel less lonely, and be more likely to engage in helping behaviors. This is where Superhero Therapy comes in. Superhero Therapy (ST) refers to incorporating popular culture into evidence-based therapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, EMDR, DBT, and many others) to destigmatize the client's mental health experience and promote engagement in treatment. Above all, Superhero Therapy aims to assist the client in becoming their own version of a superhero in real life (IRL), fostering posttraumatic growth and being more willing to engage in treatment-related practices. Capes are optional. Dr. Janina Scarlet is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, author, TEDx speaker, and a full-time geek. A Ukrainian-born refugee, she survived Chernobyl radiation and persecution. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 with her family and later, inspired by the X-Men, developed Superhero Therapy to help patients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Dr. Scarlet is the recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award by the United Nations Association for her work on Superhero Therapy. Her work has been featured on Yahoo, BBC, NPR, Sunday Times, CNN, CW, ABC, The New York Times, Forbes, and many other outlets. She regularly consults on books and television shows, including HBO's The Young Justice. She was also portrayed as a comic book character in Gail Simone's Seven Days graphic novel. Dr. Scarlet is the Lead Trauma Specialist at the Center for Stress and Anxiety Management and with the Pop Culture Hero Coalition. She authored ten books and has written chapters for fourteen others. Her books include Superhero Therapy, Harry Potter Therapy, Therapy Quest, Dark Agents, Super-Women, It Shouldn't Be This Way, and many others.

Chase Masterson is an actress and activist. She's appeared in ER, Sliders, The Flash, and perhaps most memorably in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where her out of this world performance as Leeta saw her voted TV's favorite sci-fi actress. But it's right here on Earth where she's having a significant impact now, heading up Pop Culture Hero Coalition, a nonprofit she co-founded that is dedicated to stamping out bullying and other forms of discrimination. In this episode, Lauren talks of her own experience with cyberbullying during her time on the BBC talent show ‘Over The Rainbow', and Chase shares the horrific story of a Star Trek fan who put her pictures on a dating site and pretended to be her. She admits that everyone who becomes a public figure will face cyberbullying, saying: “It's going to happen, and it's going to hurt. But you have to treat it like a mosquito and flick it off.”Sign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at: www.a-brit-in-la.fmCreated & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.com

Chase Masterson is always favorite interview and with her anti-bullying campaign supported by so many people from various communities across the board, it is no wonder why the near decade long @SuperheroIRL initiative via the Pop Culture Hero Coalition has been so successful across the U.S. and internationally. According to @SuperheroIRL, — "The justice league of real life superheroes — is bringing their BE KIND campaign to WonderCon! Endorsed by Rainn Wilson, David Tennant, Ming-Na Wen, Sonequa Martin-Green, Joe Gatto, Jeff Goldblum and a who's who of famous names! Our mission? Building empathy and ending bullying, racism, misogyny, LGBTQI+ bullying, and cyber bullying." @SuperheroIRL initiative new Heroic Journey Curriculum has become a powerful force using psychology + iconic stories — including The Avengers, Star Wars, Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Harry Potter and Batman — to teach lifelong mental health skills. It's so powerful, in fact, that 160 YMCA locations across the country now use it! We swung by Booth 1108 this past weekend at WonderCon, in Anaheim, CA as conventions are reopening for the world to gather and met with several old friends, like Chase Masterson to see how humanity could unite via pop culture. Masterson is quite in credible as she remembers virtually everyone she has ever met at one of these conventions, especially if they are rocking the, "Be Kind" tee shirts or other merch, like comics from the booths. All were (and are) welcome at any @SuperheroIRL booth at various cons across America. What was more significant than this interview was watching Masterson and her associates interact with attendees from all walks of life, with kind eyes or even just a smile allowing them to feel welcomed, where some have so often felt alienated. This week on Episode 529 of Priority One: We power up for Star Trek: Prodigy, with the cast and crew promotion peaking as the premiere prepares to play–plus we get some more details on the explosive new additions to Star Trek Online! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Star Trek: Prodigy Promotion Peaks in Premiere Preparations By Rosco McQueen This week the Trek universe welcomes a brand new adventure to our screens, with Star Trek: Prodigy to make its debut on Paramount+ on October 28.  A few sneak peeks have been filtering through, with Prodigy teasers tempting new fans during NFL Sunday Football. In the first clip, Dal can be seen making his escape from the mining facility in dramatic fashion. In the second clip, we are treated to the Protostar powering up, with characters Dal and Rok-Tahk finally being able to converse thanks to the universal translator.  https://twitter.com/StarTrekOnPPlus/status/1452347822049677315?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1452347822049677315%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomicbook.com%2Fstartrek%2Fnews%2Fstar-trek-prodigy-uss-protostar-sneak-peeks-nfl-sunday-football%2F Both scenes are fun and exciting, with the standout being the effort that has gone into the musical score which helps it feel very much at home in the Star Trek universe. The folks at Gizmodo felt that tiny moment highlighted something special about the Star Trek franchise—the ability of everyone to communicate freely, as well as not judging a book by its hulky rock-encrusted cover.   A Seat at the Grown-Up's Helm Station Prodigy executive producers/co-creators Kevin and Dan Hageman, and executive producer/director Ben Hibon, spoke with Trekmovie.com about the challenges around finding that entry point into the Star Trek multiverse, with Dan Hageman saying,   “We never really view it as a kid show. We view it as a show for people who don't know Star Trek,  which could be young or old. And so we always had that perspective of the outsider and that freed us up. We wanted to keep the stakes real for an older audience. We never want to dumb things down for kids. Kids are really smart. They may have a learning curve in the show, but they'll get there.” Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekMovie.com The creators go on to talk about how there was never any other option for the training hologram: it was always Captain Janeway from the start. They also mention she may not be the only hologram we see, and hint at real characters (like Captain Chakotay) making an appearance but not as holograms. As for Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew has also been on the interview circuit, explaining to cinemablend.com if the character was going to appear on-screen, then it was always going to be her who would play the role.   “Well, I certainly needed to come back to this character if threatened with an imitation. I think that only I can voice this character, and only I should, because I'm the only one who knows who she is. I think that the young people would recognize that very quickly. That might be arrogance on my part, but I don't think so. I think they have a very discerning imagination.” Voyager: The Next Generation Mulgrew says she hasn't been approached about reprising her role as Kathryn Janeway in a live-action series (outside of Star Trek: Nemesis).  According to the actor, hologram Janeway won't be as fiery as her living counterpart–as she's helping a ship of children navigate the cosmos.  The caring side of Janeway was echoed by the cast and crew at New York Comic Con in an interview with Gizmodo. COVID-19 restrictions meant the cast was unable to record together, so for Brett Gray who plays the role of Dal, finally getting together with Mulgrew was something else. “I got to sit next to her today at Comic-Con—and it is, it's palpable.  There's a majesty that she has, and you can feel it when we announced she was coming out today. Just to walk on stage for the panel was like—the audience was deafening. She is an icon. And so, I feel very lucky that the first iteration of Star Trek we get to be a part of has someone like that we get to model and watch. People who are incredible fans of Janeway and all of that get to now have a way into our show, too, and see what it's like for people who know nothing.” For the final word on the series, Kate Mulgrew spoke about now being the perfect time to bring in a brand new audience. “It is an important time for Voyager, it's an important time for Star Trek. I think in terms of pop cultural history, now is the time to target this young demographic and introduce to them the wonderful mysteries of Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry's splendid philosophy.” And sweet ships. Don't forget the sweet ships. Image: ViacomCBS, via io9. Soong Long, Farewell, Altman Will Go Goodbye By Thomas Reynolds We knew that Brent Spiner will be returning for Picard Season 2 for some time now. You may have thought it would be as Altan Inigo Sybok…er, Soong, who was apparently just out of frame in every TNG scene with Data's “parents.” After all, Data was really, truly, 100%-for-sure dead when the curtain dropped on Season 1. Well that's not the case, according to Inverse magazine...Spiner's role as Altan, that is. Data's still dead. "Nothing is stranger to man than his own image." [Karel Capek, R.U.R.] Image: ViacomCBS, via Inverse. According to interviewer Ryan Britt, Spiner “know[s] they haven't revealed much about me being in the show. I can tell you I'm a member of the Soong family. And, that I'm not playing a character I've ever played before.” Given Season 2's central temporal shenanigans, it seems likely that Spiner will play a 21st century Soong ancestor. However, if you consider Data and his siblings to be Soong family members, then Spiner might be a temporally-displaced android instead. It's definitely not Data, at least. He's…yep, still dead.  What Goes Around, Khans Around By Rosco McQueen The third season of The Movies That Made Us has dropped on Netflix. Its creator, Brian Volk-Weiss from The Nacelle Company, spoke with comicbook.com about the possibility of a superhero-focused future episode, as well as some tasty Trek nuggets.  You might be thinking the ideal movies to cover in this documentary style would be 1989's Batman or Christopher Reeve's first Superman movie. According to Volk-Weiss, he actually would go a little more modern and cover 2008's Iron Man:  “It would be Iron Man, because Iron Man is the most important[. B]ecause if Iron Man had failed, nothing else would have happened. And also, I like that story of not just seeing a movie come together, but a universe come together." As for those Trek nuggets, surely a film like Wrath of Khan would be on their sensors for a future episode? Volk-Weiss confirms there was discussion, but in the end it came down to covering all four quadrants–of storytelling. “But usually, we want four-quadrant movies. And what that means is, for anyone who doesn't know, it's young people, old people, men, women, everybody. And that's what we try to do. And also multi-generational. My generation grew up with Home Alone, and the two generations afterward–including my children–they like Home Alone as much as I do, if not more. So that's what we try to do." Quick Star Trek News Roundup Last week, we discussed the History Channel's upcoming documentary “The Center Seat.” Unfortunately, we didn't yet know the release date. Well, we've got it now, and it's slated to premiere on November 5th, 2021. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds The Guardian of Sometime Later By Thomas Reynolds First introduced with 2018's Pop Culture Hero Coalition bundle, the Mirror Guardian brought sinister flavor to an otherwise-unremarkable T6 cruiser. Other than replacing the Lieutenant Engineering/Intel with a Lieutenant Engineering/Command bridge chair, the Mirror Guardian looked to be the same as its Prime counterpart. Once the bundle sold out, that was it: the Mirror Guardian was never seen again...until now, that is. https://twitter.com/i/status/1451579395525812224 With STO taking a good hard look in the Mirror (Universe), it's the perfect time for this one-and-done vessel to stage its comeback. But rather than setting course for the Phoenix Prize Pack or Mudd's Market, Cryptic was all set to sell the Mirror Guardian Cruiser for the standard 3000 Zen in the Zen Store instead. As part of the re-release, the Prime and Mirror Guardian models were remastered to the current level of fidelity, like we've seen for a good number of ships by now. Players who already own the Mirror Guardian will receive these updates for free: just ready your Cruiser, visit the ship Customization Interface, and apply a preset. Both Type 1 and Type 2 hull models will be available, along with the Legendary Federation starship materials. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1452736912150515716?s=20 Now normally we'd remind you to Trek out the link in our shownotes at this point. But we won't. Because you can't! On October 25th, Cryptic tweeted that “the release of the Mirror Guardian in the Zen Store has been delayed until December on all platforms,” and they're “taking down the blog and any past references to it.” We can only guess what kind of skullduggery and intrigue is behind the delay. Because...I mean, it's the Mirror Universe. There's gotta be intrigue. Splosion! By Elio Lleo Well, while we're on the topic of ships, the 10 year old MMO is always striving to improve! Most recently, Ship Artist and FX Artist Ian Richards decided to make an explosive change. The animations that occur as your ship receives damage in the game has been updated–including the grand explosion that happens when yer ship just canna take it anymore! It might seem like a small improvement, but boy is it glorious! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-QVLE01MV4

Creation Entertainment's annual Las Vegas Star Trek convention, now dubbed “The 55-Year Mission Tour”, will return next Wednesday, August 11, after  last year's show get postponed twice due to the pandemic. While this year's convention is a go, it hasn't been without its challenges. The Delta variant has caused a surge of infections in Nevada, with mask mandates returning in various counties in the state, including Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. This development has made both fans and celebrities understandably concerned about traveling to the city. Most of the TrekMovie team will be heading to the con, including Shuttlepodders Kayla, Jared, and Brian. In this episode, they preview the convention, their own concerns about navigating a convention during a pandemic, and more. We also spoke to DS9's Chase Masterson, who will be a guest at the con, about how Creation is working to keep the actors safe as well as her work with Pop Culture Hero Coalition, which she'll be promoting at the show.

This week on Episode 508 of Priority One: Anson Mount updates fans on the status of #StrangeNewWorlds; Paramount+ is serious about its streaming; the mobile game Star Trek Fleet Command meets The Next Generation; and Chase Masterson joins us to talk about the Pop Culture Hero Coalition! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds JLP In Effigy By Elio Lleo If you’re looking to add to your existing Star Trek collection, then you might want to #TrekOut EXO-6’s latest product. Their 1:6 scale articulated figure of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the style and uniform from Star Trek: First Contact is now available for preorder. AKA "Mother's Day 2022." Image: EXO-6. The figurine has over 30 points of articulation that allow you recreate some of your favorite moments from the film---with a Type II hand phaser, the TR-590 Tricorder X, or a Type 3B Phaser Rifle! So, if you’re looking to add to your collection, you can pre-order now for $20 US---but the total cost will be $189.95 + $25 US international shipping. https://youtu.be/eGoXyXiwOBg?t=73 I'm A Doctor, Not A...Well, Yes, A Podcaster By Cat Hough As you might recall from a previous episode, we mentioned that Gates McFadden was getting into podcasting. Well her new podcast, Gates McFadden InvestiGates: Who Do You Think You Are? launches May 12. This is a limited podcast series where Gates invites some of her besties over for a chat. Who’s on the lineup? Well, to name a few: Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Wil Wheaton, Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, John  de Lancie, Robert Picardo, Michael Westmore, Nana Visitor, Denise Crosby and more. Each show is less interview and more one-on-one intimate conversation. NacelleCast promises that InvestiGates will feature “never-before-heard stories” from the stars and creatives behind Star Trek. https://youtu.be/tg50Jok82nc While we are very excited to listen to her new podcast, we do have some unfortunate news. McFadden confirmed this week to TrekMovie.com that she will not be reprising her role as Beverly Crusher in Season Two of Star Trek: Picard, saying “I’m not in the second season. I’m sad that I’m not. Things have changed a lot on different levels. So I have no idea at this point. I’m disappointed because it would have been so much fun to just work with those people. But we’ll see. I have no idea. I wish I could tell you.” The Vision of Trek In Gene’s Centennial Year By Rosco McQueen It’s the core mantra of the Vulcan philosophy, and the overall Star Trek franchise---infinite diversity in infinite combinations.  This week Rod Rodenberry reflected on the guiding principle of his father, Gene Rodenberry, who was born a century ago in 1921.  Speaking with The Credits, Rod Roddenberry spoke about his father and the future he pictured for everyone. “He took more of a humanistic or a realistic approach.  What could it be like one day? How did he see us 200, 300 years in the future? My father took the approach that we’re sort of a juvenile, child race-species right now, but we grow like any species---any life form does---and we mature. In that future, we realize it’s the diversity in idea, not just form. The fact that we are fighting over the fact that we look different now is childish. We need to be embracing the uniqueness between us because that’s how you grow.” Rod goes on to speak about diversity being the strength of Star Trek, and how it has always been the goal of the series that “no matter what your ethnic, gender, socio-economic, religious, political background is, it should all be represented at some level on Star Trek. That’s what humanity is and needs to be. That’s what Star Trek is.” Paramount+ Piles It On By Rosco McQueen In an effort to compete with other streaming services, Paramount+ is leaning into its cinema pedigree. The promise is an additional 1,000 movies added to their library, for 2,500 total titles in June. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it’s all part of ViacomCBS’s plan to counter Disney+’s catalogue of Marvel and Star Wars titles, or HBO MAX and their same-day cinema and streaming releases. CEO Bob Bakish announced the plan, as well as future exclusive titles on ViacomCBS’s first-quarter earnings conference call.  Bakish said that the new Mark Whalberg film Infinite will go straight to the on-demand service, reflecting their plans to release an original movie every week in 2022.  Bakish also told shareholders that their subscriber base grew substantially since the rebrand to Paramount+, adding 6 million global streaming subscribers to reach 36 million in its first quarter. ViacomCBS shareholder meeting (editor's interpretation). Image: ViacomCBS. Now, here are a few headlines that we didn’t discuss but might interest you: While promoting his latest film, “The Virtuoso,” Anson Mount spoke with RadioTimes’ Paul Simpson about getting back into the Captain’s chair for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. According to Mount, although COVID protocols have required everyone to adapt, “it’s been one of the smoothest starts I think I’ve ever had in television.” Additionally, it sounds like some of the production staff have crossed over from Star Trek: Discovery, making the transition much easier. Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 will be released on Blu-Ray on July 20. The four-disc collection will also include over 2 hours of special features. Nothing as to whether there will be a 4K release of a new Trek series any time soon. Actor Nathan Jung, who appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series has died at the age of 74. Over the years he had roles on TV and film in The A Team, Kung Fu, Big Trouble in Little China, and the Kentucky Fried Movie. But it was Trek that helped launch his career: Jung played Ghengis Khan in the episode “The Savage Curtain” in 1969.   STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds (Say That You Remember) Fusing In September By Cath Hough The U.S.S. Enterprise-F, designed by Thomas Marrone will be included in the 2022 Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar series by Universe Publishing. This is the first time a ship from Star Trek Online has appeared in the calendar series. Ships from TOS, TNG and DS9 are also featured and the calendar includes some ship designs and cutaway diagrams. Maybe we should start calling Thomas Mr. September? [No. - Ed.] So much for thrusters only while in spacedock. Image: Thomas Morrone via Universe Publishing. Also this week, our favorite environment artist Nick Duguid streamed his design and build of a 2409 Federation fusion reactor environment. This is a fascinating video: Nick walks us through his process from forming an idea to actually building an asset. It seems like we’re just watching what a day at work is like for Nick. The video ends with showcasing his final design and it’s an amazing piece of work.  https://twitter.com/Tumerboy/status/1391770455309099011?s=20 Cryptic’s Latest Console-ations By Rosco McQueen Good news for console captains this week, with the Delta Recruit event coming to consoles from May 13 on Playstation and Xbox.  The event will run for 28 days, and includes improvements to the existing recruit rewards to remove out of date missions and introduce some new rewards.  It’s a great way to earn extra perks on your account, so why not take the opportunity to create a new character! Any freshly-made 2409 characters from Starfleet, the Klingon Defense Force, or the Romulan Republic are eligible to become a recruit for the 28 days the event runs! From May 13th through 20th, console captains can claim a free Phoenix prize pack each day. Visit Onna on Deep Space Nine or get gritty with Grym on Drozana Station to claim your pack.  And lastly for console, the Jovian Intel Heavy Raider from Season three of Discovery is finally making it to the game.  The new Tier 6 ship will be available via the Infinity Lock Box. The Next Generation of Fleet Command By Elio Lleo Turning our attention to mobile gaming, Scopely’s Star Trek: Fleet Command introduced a new era of characters from the Star Trek Multiverse on May 11th. TNG characters like Geordi, Deanna, Data, Beverly, Will, and Jean-Luc are now available; according to a post on StarTrek.com, “the event will continue to evolve over time, with new surprises rolling out in the following months.” If the beard unlocks by microtransaction I am going to riot. This week on Priority One --- We 'Trek Out' the announcement of Star Trek: “Strange New Worlds” and Akiva Goldsman already has some comments; we learn how filming could restart during the pandemic, and Sir Patrick shares some thoughts on Picard! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online’s Mudd’s Market floods us with some insanely expensive choices…. And our featured presentation is a sit down with Star Trek’s Jonathan Del Arco! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Would you like to see Jeffery Combs play Dr. Boyce? Why or why not? AND CQ: Are you interested in the new Mudd’s Market bundle? What ships would you choose? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan On Friday May 15th, ViacomCBS made the OFFICIAL announcement that Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike would be getting his own series. Along with a brief description of the upcoming show, titled “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, we were treated to a video featuring the show's three stars - the aforementioned Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn. In the video, the trio thanked fans for their continued support, and Mount promised ”We’re going to get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future. And I guess there’s only one more thing to say - Hit It” The series Executive Producers include Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, and our very own Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth! The premiere’s story was hashed out by Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and Jenny Lumet, and Goldsman gets the screenplay credit. Star Trek “Captain” Alex Kurtzman said in a release ”When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it. These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories has yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe.” No release date was announced, but the project was given a “series order”, and it sounds like the premiere script is ready to go. WE’RE GETTING A PIKE SERIES!!! Akiva Goldsman With Variety Discussing “Strange New Worlds” Did you hear we’re getting a new Star Trek series? One of the architects of the upcoming “Strange New Worlds”, Akiva Goldsman, sat down with Variety to talk a bit more about the project. Goldsman’s goal is to hew closer to The Original Series ”We’re going to try to harken back to some classical ‘Trek’ values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic. Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either ‘Discovery’ or ‘Picard.”. Goldsman continued ”I imagine it to be closer to the original series than even ‘DS9,'. We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece.” But Goldsman clarified that this won’t be EXACTLY like the episodic adventures of years past, telling Variety ”I think one thing that we always struggled with [as fans] was that Kirk is heartbroken at the loss of Edith Keeler in ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’ and has to be just fine the next week.  I think what we would want to do is keep the characters having moved through and recognizing the experiences they’ve had in previous episodes, but to be able to tell contained, episodic stories.” Could Jeffery Combs Show Up in “Strange New Worlds” Imagine - if you dare - not only getting “Strange New Worlds”, but also getting the incomparable Jeffrey Combs as part of the crew. Star Trek twitter presence “Andorian Soup” has dared to imagine just that. On May 16th, Andorian Soup - whose avatar is Shran from Star Trek: Enterprise - posted a side-by-side photo of Jeffrey Combs and John Hoyt, the actor who played ship physician and Pike confidant Dr. Phillip Boyce in “The Cage”.  The resemblance between the two actors is certainly undeniable. So what are the chances that the prolific actor could play the wise Doctor? According to Combs, not high. Replying to Andorian Soup’s Twitter post, Combs himself said ”Thank you. Nice thought, but the chasm between what fans want and what the studios want make the chances of it happening slim to none.... and Slim left town.”. That doesn’t mean the Star Trek veteran wouldn’t be interested. When asked if he’d be open to the possibility, Combs replied ”Of course. I love Star Trek. Star Trek is life.” Patrick Stewart Teases Picard Season 2 Though we are obviously excited for the newly announced “Strange New Worlds”, there were other interesting Trek nuggets for our proverbial dipping that did not include Pike and the gang. This week, Sir Patrick Stewart sat down with Gold Derby to discuss his experience with HIS Trek offering, Star Trek: Picard. Sir Patrick reiterated his initial hesitation for playing the legendary Captain again, but revealed that he thought season 1 may be his last time doing so. Stewart recalled reading the script for the series finale, saying ”the writers had been a little bit undercover about that aspect of how series one was going to end. I learned it from reading the script, and when I saw that Picard collapsed and died when he was on that alien planet, I thought, ‘Oh my lord, I’m being written out of the show?” Instead, Picard lives on with an “artificial life inside me, but not a subservient, cruel one like the Borg. Well, we shall see. We don’t know how Picard will with this new condition that has become part of his life.” Stewart also teased what’s to come in Season 2, telling Gold Derby ”There are startling events predicted in Season 2. I’m so excited about them, because it is taking season one from where we were, we aren’t going to be covering the same ground. And it’s going to be, I think, extraordinary. I’m very excited about it.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Mudd Plays With Time Again… Again? Well it’s a slow news week for Star Trek gaming, but there’s one very big talking point from Star Trek Online! In a STO News blog posted May 19th, Ambassador Kael announced the latest new offerings from Mudd’s Market. And, according to the blog itself, “it’s one of our craziest bundles ever!” In the usual Mudd’s Market style, the bundle is listed with two “prices”.  There’s the so-called regular price, which is 29,500 Zen, or nearly $300 in cash. Then there’s the sale price, at which the bundle is available to players until 5/26, which is 14,750 Zen, or nearly $150 in cash. So what does that significant investment get you? That’s where this bundle gets really interesting.  Because, unlike other Mudd’s Market offerings, this bundle is all about choices. You get to choose THREE of these six items: Amarie-class Heavy Escort [T6] Temporal Science Vessel [T6] - Account-wide reclaim of faction-appropriate ship. Temporal Destroyer [T6] - Account-wide reclaim of faction-appropriate ship. 2 Zen Store T6 ship 100% off coupons 10x Ultimate Tech Upgrades A Phoenix pack Epic prize token which will unlock a character-locked ship So when you’ve purchased the bundle and claimed your three choices, any ships chosen will be forever reclaimable on all of your characters. You can also purchase the bundle as many times as you want. So, purchasing the bundle twice could get you all six choices. And subsequent purchases of the bundle after that would get you more T6 ship coupons, Ultimate Tech Upgrades, and Epic Phoenix prize tokens.  That is, you know, if you wanted to spend $450 or more on STO.  STO’s Groupees Fundraiser We’ve already covered Star Trek Online’s charity fundraiser for Pop Culture Hero Coalition and United Way Bay Area, but it’s worth mentioning two updates tweeted this week to the game’s Twitter account. First, they’ve restocked the $10 bundles, so if you missed out before, now’s your chance. Second, the tweet declared that the Groupees bundles have raised nearly $110,000 for the two charities. So, a big congratulations to Star Trek Online, and to its players, for their efforts!

This week on Priority One --- We trek out the end of CBS ALL ACCESS, Lower Decks place in the Trek mythos, another possible Kirk recasting, and Intakes! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online once again teams with Groupees to support the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, more updates to the “Year of Klingon”, and we protect Pahvo in our newest event. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: CQ: Do you believe the rumor that James Cannavale will be the next Kirk? Do you like the casting, or is there someone else you’d prefer? AND CQ: What did you think of the Khitomer map updates shared by Star Trek Online? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan ViacomCBS Rebranding The end of CBS ALL ACCESS is near! But not really. But kind of. But...let’s get to the story! On Thursday, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish told investors there would be big changes to the companies Over the Top VOD service - CBS ALL ACCESS - starting with a rebranding of the subscription based service. So see, it’s sort of the end. But not really - Anyway. Bakish said “major changes coming this summer as we track toward the rebrand and relaunch of a transformed product.”. In addition to the 100 plus movie titles added to the service on Thursday - including Star Trek IV, Generations, First Contact, and Nemesis  - All Access programming chief Julie McNamara said in a press release “Expanding CBS All Access’ library of films with these iconic titles from Paramount Pictures is just one of the many ways we’re integrating the phenomenal catalog of IP available to us within the ViacomCBS family” But movies aren’t the only changes coming to the soon-to-be-artist-formally-known-as-CBS ALL ACCESS. ViacomCBS promises to leverage several of its broadcast properties on the service as well, including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Smithsonian, and Paramount Network. Bar Rescue 24-7! No firm details were given about release date or price changes, but we’ll be keeping our sensors set to full. Stay tuned! Lower Decks is On-Track For it’s Unannounced Premiere Mike McMahon is a busy man. This week, the former Rick and Morty showrunner launched a new animated series on Hulu - Solar Opposites - and sat down with Inverse to promote the show. During the interview, McMahon spoke a bit about his next project, Star Trek: Lower Decks. McMahon gave the vaguest of vague answers when talking about the shows release, saying “I can't give you a specific answer on when that's coming out, but we’re still working on it and we're on track for when we have planned, which is this year”..  The TNG Season 8 creator did open up a bit about where the show fits in the mythos, though, saying “It was important to me that if you know everything about Star Trek and you watch this show then it fits into Canon and doesn't break Star Trek. In fact, it grows it. And if you know nothing about Star Trek, then all of the canon in Lower Decks feels like mythological, broad understandable sci-fi stuff. So you can still enjoy Lower Decks even if it's your first Star Trek show.” Kirk in the Rumored Star Trek: Pike? Any and every entertainment gossip site has claimed to “break the story” of an upcoming Star Trek: Pike series, but this week a new - and interesting - rumor has expanded on this story. So… like last week’s discussion about potential acquisitions… this is another headline to take with a grain of salt! Gossip cinema site - The Cinema Spot - claims to have exclusive insider information that the unannounced upcoming Pike series has started casting - wait for it - James Tiberius Kirk. According to the site “CBS All Access is eyeing multiple actors, but sources close to CBS have informed us that the streaming service is very keen on casting Jake Cannavale for the role. He recently held a screentest with Star Trek: Discovery Spock actor Ethan Peck, through Skype”. Through Skype? Really? Skype? Not to be outdone, “We Got This Covered” - which has a long and spotty scoop history - claimed another TOS character was also being recast “we’ve now heard from our sources – the same ones who told us about the Pike spinoff initially and that Discovery has been renewed for five seasons, which has also been confirmed – that Uhura will also feature in the series. We don’t know whether the producers have any actresses in mind for the role yet, but the character will definitely appear on the show.” Star Trek’s Intakes Star Trek fans are a creative bunch. From fanfic to podcast - and everything in between - we sure put our passion to good use. One of those industrious fans, youtube Ryan’s Edits, has taken Star Trek outtakes and put them back into the episode - and it’s even better than it sounds. From Future Imperfect’s high-fives to Guinan’s...unique advice about the holodeck, these bite-sized trek nuggets are a fun distraction. Trekmovie.com has the newest videos imbedded, so follow our link for easy viewing! Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Groupees Fundraiser Star Trek Online has once again invited players to join in their effort to raise funds for two worthy causes. Buyers of the higher tier will also automatically receive the items from Tier 1. One was the B’rel Bird of Prey we were already expecting, and the other was a new model for the K’Tinga battlecruiser. This week we present two stories of people who had to leave home to find a new home. Part 1: When Ph.D student Ali Mattu's girlfriend tells him she is moving to New York City, he has to make some tough decisions about where home is. Part 2: Arlo Pérez Esquivel struggles to define his boundaries with his father while he is pursuing his education in another country. Ali Mattu is a cognitive behavioral therapist who helps kids and adults with anxiety disorders. Through YouTube, Dr. Mattu teaches a global audience how to use psychological science to achieve their goals. He’s created over 100 videos for his YouTube channel, The Psych Show, which have been seen over 1,400,00 million times. He has been interviewed by the New York Times, appeared on Buzzfeed, MTV, CBS, NBC, PBS, and has the honor of being referenced, and not made fun of, on HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Dr. Mattu is a licensed clinical psychologist and was an assistant professor at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. He presently serves on the Board of Directors of The Story Collider and creates curriculum for the Pop Culture Hero Coalition. He has served in a variety of leadership roles within the American Psychological Association. Arlo Pérez Esquivel was raised in Mexico until the age of 16, when he left for the United States. There, he moved across multiple states, and lived in the homes of different friends and relatives in order to finish his education. During this constant movement, Arlo developed a passion for street photography. His work attempts to investigate the “sense of place” by capturing people, their environment, and the relationship between the two. He is now a Digital Associate Producer for NOVA on PBS, currently working on a ten-part digital series on how life and science are done in Antarctica. Learn more about your ad choices. Having been bullied as a kid, anti-bullying is an issue that's very important to me. It's also one that's very important to actress Chase Masterson. You may know her as Leeta from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, or from one of her many other projects; however, she is also the founder of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition which works to educate and support children, teens, and adults to overcome bullying and social injustice, and to transform their struggles into strengths, using stories and characters from pop culture TV, film, and comics.Using the message of inclusion from Star Trek, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition strives to create, promote and foster a culture free from the injustice of bullying, cyberbullying, hate crimes, and inequality based on gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual identity or preference, physical disability, mental disability, learning disability, or any other perceived vulnerability. The issue of bullying in schools is widespread and devastating to students of all ages. According to StopBullying.gov, 28% of students in grades 6-12 have been bullied. Even more shocking is that 70.6% of students and 70.4% of school staff say that they have witnessed bullying. However, when bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time. Thanks to a growing awareness of the problem of bullying, studies suggest that rates of bullying may be declining. However, it still remains a prevalent and serious problem in today’s schools which is why the Pop Culture Hero Coalition is so important. If you'd like learn more and see how you can help, be sure to check out their website. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You can also follow Chase on Facebook, Twitter, and ChaseMasterson.com.Thanks to Chase for taking a few minutes out of her time to discuss this important topic! According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, more than one in five students report being the victim of bullying, but the number of children and adults who face mental intimidation, physical threat, or social manipulation may be even larger than that. What’s worse, is that numerous studies show that the impact of bullying can be both profound and long-lasting.  Joining us to talk about prevention, support, and what we can do is Chase Masterson, founder of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, an organization which seeks to use stories from comics, TV, and film to teach real-life heroism over bullying.

This week, we take a journey into science-fiction to find out if aliens can master the science of empathy and zombies can bring a couple closer together. Part 1: Chase Masterson's role on Star Trek Deep Space 9 inspires her to think about how she can help others. Part 2: Bethany Van Delft and her fiance reckon with the zombie apocalypse. Chase Masterson is best known for her five-year breakout role as Leeta on Star Trek DS9 & the Doctor Who Big Finishaudio spinoff, VIENNA. Seen Guest-Starring on The Flash, Chase is a fan-favorite for her roles starring opposite Bruce Campbell (SyFy'sTerminal Invasion), as well as opposite Jerry O’Connell, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy, and Co-Hosting with Ryan Seacrest and Scott Mantz. Feature film roles include starring in Stephen King’s Sometimes They Come Back for More, Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, and e-One’s critically acclaimed sci-fi noir, Yesterday Was a Lie, as well as playing herself in Miramax’s Comic Book: The Movie, directed by Mark Hamill, and an early role in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, directed by Mel Brooks (SQUEEE!). During the run of DS9, TV Guide Readers’ Poll named Chase Favorite Sci-Fi Actress on TV.  A devout feminist, Chase has consoled herself from being listed in AOL’s 10 Sexiest Aliens on TV, Screen Rant’s 15 Most Stunning Aliens on Star Trek and in Femme Fatales 50 Sexiest Women of the Year by creating a dizzying list of charity initiatives with ChaseClub: fundraisers for the firehouse most affected by 9/11, Caring for Babies with AIDS, Hurricane Katrina, and a long-standing relationship with Homeboy Industries, where she has mentored women and men coming out of gangs for the past 9 years. Chase is the Founder of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, the 1st ever non-profit organization to stand against bullying, racism, misogyny, LGBTQI-bullying and cyberbullying using comics, TV and film.  Bethany Van Delft’s “hip & grounded, laid back delivery” has earned her the honor of performing at the prestigious Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, San Francisco Sketchfest, as well as appearances on Comedy Central, TV Guide Channel, NickMom, and 2 Dope Queens podcast. Her "series at the Women in Comedy Festival "38/7%" was a huge hit, and monthly show, Artisanal Comedy, has been named “one of the top indie nights to check out”. Her latest project, a hilariously cringeworthy storytelling show/podcast with Nick Chambers “Starstruck: Close Encounters of the Awkward Kind” is becoming a fan favorite. Unashamedly in touch with her inner nerd, Bethany has been a panelist on “You’re The Expert” and “Literary Death Match”. She hosts MOTH mainstages around the country, MOTH storyslams & Grandslams, is thrilled to have a MOTH story re-posted by SULU! (aka George Takei) and honored to have a story included in The MOTH's 2nd book "All These Wonders". Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It doesn't get much more heroic than that, does it
