In this episode, I share reflections from yesterday's karate seminar and the conversations that followed. What stood out most was how many experienced black belts admitted they felt anxious about attending the workshop. We often assume anxiety disappears with rank or years of training—but that's far from the truth. I explore why even advanced martial artists experience nerves, self-doubt, and hesitation, and why this is not a weakness but part of growth. I also break down an important mindset shift: anxiety and excitement are driven by the same chemical response in the body. The difference lies in how we interpret and guide our thoughts. Learning to redirect anxiety into excitement can completely change how we approach seminars, gradings, competitions, and personal development in karate and martial arts. This episode is for karateka of all levels—especially black belts—who want to understand their mindset better, train with more freedom, and step onto the mat with confidence rather than fear. Keywords: karate seminar, black belt mindset, martial arts anxiety, karate psychology, confidence in karate, martial arts training, mental health in martial arts, excitement vs anxiety

Karate Vigilance is a post written by one of the sensei on Facebook. I found it interesting, and while many of the points raised differ from my own views, it prompted me to reflect on dojo culture. My opinions on this subject are, in several areas, in opposition to those expressed in the post, and I would like to share my perspective. This is not intended as criticism or disrespect toward the author—only a reflection of differing experiences and philosophies within karate. Healthy discussion and diversity of opinion are important for the growth of martial arts, and this is shared in that spirit.

Why do New Year's resolutions often make us more stressed than motivated? In this episode of Anxious Black Belt, we explore the mental health pitfalls of goal-setting, perfectionism, and social pressure—and why doing less can sometimes be the key to doing better.

For a long time, Anxious Black Belt has been releasing two episodes a week — and behind the scenes, that pace came with a cost. In this episode, I talk openly about the decision that's been weighing on me, the pressure to keep showing up, and why something had to change. This isn't about quitting the podcast. It's about sustainability, mental health, and choosing quality over burnout. If you've ever struggled with overcommitment, creative exhaustion, or the fear of letting people down, this conversation is for you.

It is time to answer your questions; some are Christmasy, while others are not.

What happens when a society removes struggle but still expects strength? In this episode, we explore the Hero's Journey and why growth through hardship is disappearing in modern life. With comfort, instant gratification, and overprotection on the rise, many young people are struggling with resilience, identity, and mental health. We break down why martial arts force real personal growth — through failure, discipline, humility, and earned confidence — and how they recreate a modern rite of passage the world is missing. If you're interested in self-development, mental toughness, martial arts philosophy, or the psychology of struggle, this episode is for you.

Stronger Together: How Karate Communities Build Mental Resilience

In this episode, we explore how the dojo becomes more than a place to perfect kicks and punches — it's a laboratory for failure. In karate, every stumble, missed block, or failed belt test is a chance to build resilience, patience, and self-awareness. But what happens when we take that mindset outside the dojo? Join us as we discuss the concept of controlled failure — how structured challenges and safe setbacks in martial arts can strengthen mental health, boost confidence, and reshape the way we face obstacles in everyday life. From classrooms to workplaces, the lessons learned on the mat translate into powerful tools for growth, emotional balance, and courage. Whether you're a martial artist, a teacher, or just someone curious about turning failure into fuel, this episode will help you see the beauty in falling down — and the strength in getting back up.

In this episode, we sit down with William Person, a former bobsled athlete who faced a life-changing traumatic brain injury. Beyond his own healing, he's become a passionate advocate for greater transparency in bobsled, highlighting the hidden impact of the sport's intense shaking on athletes' brains. William is also raising funds to open a specialized clinic to help others suffering from brain injuries, turning his personal struggle into a mission to support the wider community. Dojo etiquette refers to the customs and respectful behaviours practised in martial arts training spaces. While the core values of discipline, respect, and safety are universal, the exact etiquette can vary between clubs, organisations, and styles. For example, some dojos may emphasise formal bowing rituals, while others adopt a more relaxed approach. Similarly, expectations around uniforms, addressing instructors, and training rituals often reflect the traditions of the specific martial art and the philosophy of the club. The key is to observe, adapt, and show respect for the culture of the dojo you are training in. T-shirts & gear: https://kfmhcic-shop.fourthwall.com/en-gbp/collections/all
