Inside stories of Lions Leaving Legacies.
Check out the PCA YouTube page if you'd like to watch this podcast. In this episode of the Lions Leaving Legacies Podcast, we sit down with Chelsea Cunningham Paterson, Class of 2009, to hear her incredible story of faith and the lasting impact of a Christ-centered education. Chelsea shares how she first learned about Prestonwood Christian Academy through friends at church, how receiving Sponsor-A-Lion tuition assistance shaped her journey, and why she and her husband are committed to providing the same Kingdom Education for their children. She reflects on the invaluable lessons PCA instilled in her, from guarding her heart and mind to confidently standing firm in her faith. Chelsea also shares how PCA strengthened her walk with Christ through Bible classes that deepened her understanding of Christianity and other worldviews, equipping her to speak confidently about her beliefs. The example set by teachers and coaches who prayed with and for her provided a strong foundation of faith. As a parent, she is passionate about providing her children with the opportunity to grow and learn in a loving community of fellow believers who will walk alongside them in their faith journey. We are also excited to announce that Chelsea will serve as the Alumni Emcee for this year's Zig Ziglar Servant Leadership Awards Banquet! The Forge is the latest movie from the incredible Christian movie producers the Kendrick Brothers (Alex, Stephen, and Shannon), who brought Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Courageous, and War Room to the big screens. This new movie is about the process of making a man - and it's a powerful story of prayer, forgiveness, redemption, and salvation! The Forge opens in theaters across the country on Friday, August 23, 2024. In the movie, Joshua Moore (older man, business owner) asks a younger Isaiah some important questions that cause Isaiah to pause and evaluate his life and future - here are those questions: 5 years from now, where do you want to be? What ways do you want to grow in the next year? What kind of man do you want to be? What do you want people to think when they see you coming? The Forge isn't a “self-help” movie about making better decisions - Isaiah surrenders his life to Christ and as he begins to follow Jesus, his life and decisions are radically changed! The Forge also highlights the importance of walking in community - surrounded by others to hold us accountable and encourage us on our journey! Madison (Madi) is the third child of the Paulette family - all four (Alex, Jenna, Madi, and Garrett) graduated from PCA. Their mom, Traci, was a beloved Kindergarten teacher for 13 years at PCA. In 2019 Madi moved to Nashville, TN where she has been living and working. Madi has been teaching art for 10 years and a couple of years ago transitioned to an elementary art position at Lipscomb Academy. Madi met Smith Ahnquist near the end of her cancer journey and they were married on June 10, 2023. A large part of Madi's story is her diagnosis and battle with breast cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 29, which was a huge shock for a health-conscious young woman. Her journey is filled with incredible highs and lows and times when God showed up and provided for her in miraculous ways! Samantha is the oldest of Scott and Julie Seal's children. Her brother Bennett graduated from PCA in 2023, and her sister Emerson is currently a freshman at PCA (class of 2027). Samantha's favorite memories of PCA begin with the powerful influence of her minimester trips! She was also very involved in PCA Theatre and was a very strong academic student. She matriculated from PCA to The University of Texas at Austin where she graduated in 2023. Samantha was also very involved in PBC's youth choir and their choir mission trips and Fall Follies. Samantha appreciates the Biblical worldview foundation that was established and cultivated during her time at PCA, especially with her involvement in Student Leadership Institute (SLi) and the Biblical Worldview Institute conferences each year. Samantha was encouraged to apply to UT, an institution that is clearly unfriendly to a Biblical worldview - and she was asked by Dr. Moss if she needed more time in the temple or if she was ready to go to Babylon (metaphor for UT and the world). As Samantha prayed about where the Lord would want her to attend college, she felt the Lord leading her to UT and felt prepared and equipped by her time at PCA for the challenges and opportunities ahead of her in Austin! While at UT, Samantha worked for the Texas State Legislature and found her passion for politics! Be praying for Samantha as she is currently living and working in Washington D.C. as the Special Assistant to Executive Director Chad Wolf and Strategic Communications Coordinator at America First Policy Institute. David started at PCA in sixth grade and graduated in 2007. His sister Kathryn (‘10) and brother Jonathan (‘16) attended and graduated from PCA as well. In addition to playing sports at PCA, David was also involved with a couple of the PCA musicals - Bye Bye Birdie and Thoroughly Modern Millie! David went to Honduras on one of his minimester trips and it was not only fun and a culture-shock, it was a spiritually transformative experience in his life and where he developed a heart for adoption! David was hired by the late Brent Trammel (PCA dad with Jennalee have three boys and PCA alumni - Chase (‘15), Cole (‘19) and Tate (‘22)) and Rob Snyder to join their team at Karl Stortz and was sent up to Denver, CO with this position. David and Abby got married, moved to Colorado, and had a daughter born with special needs - a lot for a young family to deal with. If you'd like to learn more about David and Abby's journey, check out their blog called Life with Hattie. Hattie was diagnosed with a rare chromosomal deletion known as 1Q43Q44 and is extremely rare, in fact there are only 55 reported cases in the world. We had a fun and engaging conversation with PCA theatre teacher Pam Hurt and fine arts director Joel T. Rutherford about some (almost all) of the incredible theatre presentations that PCA has performed over the years. If you would like to WATCH this episode on YouTube, click here! About PCA's Theatre program: Prestonwood Christian Academy has an award-winning and nationally-recognized theatre program that strives to provide Middle and Upper School students with a creative and multidisciplinary art form. One of our objectives is to prepare serious theatre students for a future career in the theatre if that is their desire. Beyond that, by participating in theatre, students will gain preparation for whatever path they choose in life by creating good work habits, time management skills, poise and cooperative learning experiences. We believe that the arts are an epicenter of influence in our culture today and Christians need to be leading the way in creativity and excellence. We had a fun and engaging conversation with three outstanding young men who not only enjoyed their time at PCA, but also have gone on to continued success at college and in life. Kaleb Kyser (2010) is the oldest of the three Kyser boys followed closely by Chandler (2012) and then there's a little gap before the youngest Max (2018) comes along. While Max is the only “lifer” of the three, Kaleb and Chandler started at PCA in the LS and spent the vast majority of their educational time at PCA. After attending Baylor University (yes, all three of them did), they are now all back in the DFW Metroplex working in a variety of fields - Kaleb and Chandler are married and are relatively new parents, while Max is recently engaged to his high school sweetheart and fellow PCA alumni Madie Cook (2017). Enjoy the conversation, laughter, and great memories shared by Kaleb, Chandler, and Max Kyser - all PCA Lions at heart to this day. Alumni - update your personal contact information here. Listen to her tell you about her journey to PCA with her boys Brian (class of 2003) and David (class of 2005). Did you know that Mrs. Pattillo was a substitute teacher at PCA before she started working at the front desk? Did you know what she taught French? Were you one of Mrs. Pattillo's legendary “office aids?” Do you remember her “Good morning PCA” greeting every morning?! There is so much more to Mrs. Pattillo that you ever imagined! What our alumni have to say about their memories of Mrs. Pattillo: “Legend” “Absolutely nobody like her” “If Larry Taylor was the head, Mrs. Pattillo was the neck” “Mrs. Pattillo was the beginning and end of our days at PCA” Alumni - update your personal contact information here. Cesia was born and raised in Cuba - her father was a pastor and got connected with Dr. Larry and Delinda Taylor on a Minimester trip - which resulted in Cesia's entire family moving to Dallas and her attending PCA! Listen to Cesia tell about the vast differences between her memories of Cuba and their lack of religious freedom to the experiences she had here in America and at PCA. Cesia continues to share her love for the Lord and her passion to help people by doing missions and connecting her degree in nursing with those trips. She attended John Brown University (JBU) and did some medical missions through the college as well! Wouldn't it be awesome to have a PCA alumni minimester trip - someone needs to work on that! Cesia went on some medical mission trips with a group called Dustin's Dream - here's some information from their website: Dustin Chamberlain was a Siloam Springs High School graduate who dreamed of becoming a medical doctor and participating in short term mission trips. In 2011, he was tragically killed during a home invasion while home on Christmas break from Baylor University in Waco, TX, where he was studying pre-medicine. The Dustin Chamberlain Memorial Foundation, an organization established in Dustin's memory, conducts international mission trips, provides scholarships for students entering the field of healthcare, and partners with like-minded organizations to improve the welfare of at-risk families locally and internationally. The organization has specifically focused on building and covering the operating costs of the Heart of Love Clinic in Guatemala City by partnering with Life of Hope Ministries in Joplin, MO. Let's all be praying for Cesia as she continues to share the Gospel through medical missions - and be praying about how God could use YOU to advance the Kingdom as well! Stephen was the starting quarterback on the Lion's first state championship in football in 2005. Stephen played with his older brother, Aaron, in the 2004 state championship game, which they lost…the game in which Aaron got injured. Bryce Hopson claims to this day that he almost single handedly carried the Lions to victory that year! That next year is when the Lion's football team started singing The Hard Fighting Soldier song. Here are the lyrics to the song that you can still hear PCA Lions singing… Lord, I'm a hard fighting soldier on the battlefield. (3X) And I'll be bringing souls to Jesus, by the service that I yield. I've got a helmet on my head and in my hand a sword and shield. (3X) And I'll be bringing souls to Jesus, by the service that I yield. You've gotta walk right and talk right and sing right and pray right on the battlefield. (3X) And I'll be bringing souls to Jesus, by the service that I yield. You know that Jesus is my Captain and He fights my battles still; He has never lost a battle and I know He never will. I got the word for my sword and I got faith for my shield; And I'll be bringing souls to Jesus, by the service that I yield. And when I die, let me die in the service of my Lord. (3X) And I'll be bringing souls to Jesus, by the service that I yield. Stephen and his (amazing) wife Rebecca live outside of Boston, MA with their 6 children! Djery Baptiste has a pretty incredible journey - not only how he got to PCA, but where he's been since he graduated from PCA in 2015. Djery matriculated to Vanderbilt University, played basketball for the Commodores, graduated in three and a half years, went on to earn his first masters degree from the University of Massachusetts and then has been playing professional basketball in Europe for the past few years. Djery speaks four languages - French, Spanish, English and Creole. He didn't come to the United States until he was 15 years old. It is a pretty amazing journey that brought Djery to PCA…so many incredible individuals have invested their time and energies into his life - and he continues to work hard to improve himself as an individual. Djery is now working on improving his basketball skills to try to make it into the NBA as a professional basketball player! One of Djery's favorite verses is Matthew 6:33 which reads, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” PCA alumni - if you would like to connect with Veronica Erickson, you can email her at verickson@prestonwoodchristian.org Special shout out to Jared Wood for allowing us to use his music - check him out at JaredWoodMusic!
Listen as Brittni Beeson, class of 2006, shares how a PCA Minimester trip turned into a 10-year journey as a missionary to Hungary. Brittni's episode is a huge encouragement and challenge to go on a mission trip, even if it's just a short-term trip, to share the love of Christ with those who have not heard the good news of Jesus Christ! Brittni's challenge - God loves you, no matter what path you've been on or even if you've strayed off the path, God desires to know you and for you to know Him better - now is the time to refocus your heart and mind on those important issues of life - who is God and who am I? If you'd like to financially support Brittni, visit her page on the CRU website. From Brittni's CRU page: I dream of a day when people from every nation are worshipping Jesus! Until that day comes, I want to live my life reaching the unreached with the gospel and mobilizing people to go. I joined staff with Cru in 2010 and served in Hungary for 10 years, casting vision to and mobilizing Hungarians to go the nations. In 2021, I felt God leading me to transition to into a new role at Cru's World Headquarters in Orlando, Florida. Currently, I am serving on the International Missions Team with Cru. I will focus on American high school students across the country, influencing them, casting vision, and sending them around the world. What a joy it is to be a part of mobilizing the next generation to reach the nations with the Good News! October 2009 was when Ty recommitted his life to Christ! Ty literally broke his back while playing football during the third game of his senior year at PCA. Ty was challenged to form a MasterMind group - and he highly recommends that you think about being a part of one as well.
