City Council may add 17 properties Beacon is considering adding 17 properties near Main Street to the city's historic district. There are nearly 300 homes and structures in the district, which prevents them and neighboring buildings from being altered in a way that the city believes will harm their historic value. The district also has its own architectural and design standards — a sticking point for some homeowners who have said during public hearings that the rules are too restrictive, limiting choices on paint colors and other elements. On the flip side, historic structures are eligible to apply for special permits that allow uses associated with history, the arts or culture, such as hotels or other professional uses. Rose Hill Manor Day School, for example, at 1064 Wolcott Ave., is part of the historic district. The Planning Board is reviewing a proposal by the property owner to convert the historic buildings to an inn and restaurant, uses not normally allowed in its otherwise mostly residential zone. Restoration of properties in the historic district may also be eligible for tax exemptions and, in some cases, for historic preservation grants. The district is an overlay, meaning its restrictions can apply to any building. It was created in 1991; before the pandemic shutdown in 2020, the City Council held public hearings on 35 properties recommended for inclusion. In July 2021, council members voted to add six properties on or near Main Street. A month later, nine Main Street buildings were added. Of the 17 sites now being considered, 14 appear to be private homes. The Beacon Hebrew Alliance, at 331 Verplanck Ave., and St. Rocco Society, at 26 South Chestnut, are on the list, along with 17 Church St., which is owned by an LLC. On the List These buildings are being considered for inclusion in Beacon's Historic District. 9 Mattie Cooper Sq. 11 N. Elm St. 4 N. Elm St. 17 Church St. 27 Church St. 159 Fishkill Ave. 189 Fishkill Ave. 194 Fishkill Ave. 331 Verplanck Ave. 11 Digger Phelps Ct. 26 S. Chestnut St. 19 Commerce St. 11 Commerce St. 20 South Ave. 22 South Ave. 26 South Ave. 30 South Ave. The council can designate a site as part of the district because of distinguishing architectural features, cultural or aesthetic value or if it is eligible for the state or national registers of historic places. After a property has been officially nominated, the council must hold a public hearing and vote within 60 days. The owners of nominated buildings can request exclusion, but a supermajority of the council (five of its seven members) can overrule the objection. 248 Tioronda The City Council has begun its review of the amended concept plan for a partially completed development at 248 Tioronda Ave. In November, the City Council gave the developer the go-ahead to draft plans for two new residential buildings with 136 apartments, 27 of which will be offered at below-market rates. That was the trade-off required after Bernard Kohn, the developer, asked the city to allow him to build more apartments (64 have been completed) rather than a commercial building, which had been a condition of approval. If, after a public hearing, the council approves the amended concept plan, the Planning Board will review and vote to amend its approval of the project. Planning Board The Planning Board on Tuesday (Feb. 10) approved Stanza Books' application to construct a partially enclosed patio behind 425 Main St., the former Mase Hook & Ladder firehouse. There was no vote on the proposal to construct an addition onto the Telephone Building at 291 Main St.; the project attorney requested an adjournment because only five of seven board members were present. The board will hold a public hearing next month on an application to construct a 49-space parking lot and add five parking spaces to the employee lot east of Dia Beacon. The museum would also like to construct a 60-foot-by-70-foot storage building at the south end of the employee lot. Public hearings Th...

Friends of the Rosary,Today, November 10, we honor Pope and Doctor of the Church St. Leo the Great (400-461), who vigorously defended the unity of the Church, and during whose pontificate the Council of Chalcedon (451) defined that Christ is one divine person with two natures, divine and human. In the reading of the Gospel (Luke 17:1-6), we listen to the Son of God talking to his disciples,“If your brother sins, rebuke him;and if he repents, forgive him.And if he wrongs you seven times in one dayand returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,'you should forgive him.”And the Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”The Lord replied,“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree,‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.”Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! St. Charles Borromeo is one of the greatest reformers in Church history — not through rebellion or innovation, but through holiness, humility, and total detachment from the world. Born into nobility and privilege, he could have lived in comfort, wealth, and ease. Instead, after the death of his brother, St. Charles turned his back on worldly attachments and consecrated his life entirely to God. He chose not the banquet halls of the rich, but the banquet of the Lamb.Ordained at 25 and made bishop soon after, St. Charles reformed clergy life and education, ensuring priests were trained to teach and sanctify the faithful with knowledge and zeal. His leadership at the Council of Trent helped shape the Roman Catechism and the very system of seminaries that still form priests today. He also established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) to teach children the truths of the Faith — so that all might “know, love, and serve God.”But St. Charles's reform did not stop in classrooms or cathedrals. During plague and famine, when civic leaders fled, he remained. He sold his possessions, fed thousands daily, and even gave up his bed for the sick, sleeping on the floor for the rest of his life. His heart — still venerated in Rome — became the symbol of a priest and shepherd who lived completely for God and His people. His secret? Meditation. He said, “Nothing is more necessary than meditation. We must meditate before, during, and after everything we do … in this way, all that you do becomes a work of love.” Whether in ministry, prayer, or recreation, he kept his intentions pure, doing all for the glory of God.St. Charles Borromeo reminds us that true reform begins not with power, but with purity — not by changing the world first, but by letting Christ change our hearts. May we, like him, renew the Church by renewing our love for God in every action, every thought, and every sacrifice.#frmattschneider #stcharlesborromeo #divinemercy #marian #marians #marianfathers #marianhelpers #thedivinemercy #catholic #catholicism #romancatholic #romancatholicism #holiness #catholictiktok #faith #saints #reform #counciloftrent #catechism #ccd #seminary ★ Support this podcast ★

St. Albert the Great (1206-1280) mastered every field of study available to him, from astronomy to zoology. He was called the “miracle of his time,” not because he performed miracles, but because he was considered an authority - on the level of St. Augustine and Peter Lombard - even within his own lifetime. He was the mentor and teacher of a more famous doctor of the Church: St. Thomas Aquinas. CULTIVATING SAINTS, SAGES, AND STATESMEN THROUGH THE GREAT TRADITION OF CHRISTENDOMIn this first episode of our "Judas Within" mini-series, we cover how the Church Fathers explained that the Catholic Church was the one true Church established by Christ, and yet also endured great scandal and corruption within. We show how they unpacked Scripture to explain that the Church on earth will always have to deal with this "Judas Within" the Church, and then share a powerful example of this from the writings of St. Augustine (Letter 208). In that letter, St. Augustine exhorts all Christians to remain within the Catholic Church despite the “Judas Within,” and that doing so is a means of gaining eternal reward and growing in holiness.VISIT OUR WEBSITEhttps://eternalchristendom.com/BECOME A PATRON OF THE GREAT TRADITIONHelp us continue to dig into the Great Tradition; produce beautiful, substantive content; and gift these treasures to cultural orphans around the world for free:https://eternalchristendom.com/become-a-patron/EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNTS AT ETERNAL CHRISTENDOM BOOKSTOREhttps://eternalchristendom.com/bookstore/CONNECT ON SOCIAL MEDIAX: https://twitter.com/JoshuaTCharlesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/joshuatcharles/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuatcharles/DIVE DEEPERCheck out Eternal Christendom's "Becoming Catholic," where you'll find hundreds of thousands of words of free content (as big as the Bible!) in the form of Articles, Quote Archives, and Study Banks to help you become, remain, and deepen your life as a Catholic:https://eternalchristendom.com/becoming-catholic/EPISODE CHAPTERS00:00 - Introduction02:42 - Biblical Basis for the Patristic View of the Church12:36 - St. Augustine on a Church of Saints and Sinners18:53 - ConclusionLISTEN ON APPLEhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/eternal-christendom-podcast/id1725000526LISTEN ON SPOTIFYhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3HoTTco6oJtApc21ggVevu

For this episode we're joined by the admirable Simon Raymonde, sometime Cocteau Twin, head honcho at Bella Union Records and author of the autobiographical In One Ear. We commence by asking our guest about growing up as the son of the legendary Ivor Raymonde, string arranger on umpteen hits by pop idols from Billy Fury to the Walker Brothers. We hear clips from Ira Robbins' 1989 audio interview with Raymonde Sr.'s most famous client Dusty Springfield — and discuss a Ray Connolly piece from 1970 in which she more or less outs herself as gay. Simon then talks about his days behind the counter at Beggars Banquet Records and how they led to his joining the Cocteaus in 1984. Clips from a 1996 audio interview with the trio prompt his reflections on writing and performing with Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser — and how their extraordinary music won the admiration of everyone from Prince to Jeff Buckley. Simon also recalls the fallout from leaving indie sanctuary 4AD for major-label Fontana. We conclude by asking our guest about the 27-year-old Bella Union label, home to Midlake, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, John Grant, Flaming Lips and Father John Misty… and to 17-year-old Nell Smith, who tragically died in a car accident three days before we recorded this episode. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces — Val Wilmer's 1966 interview with Sun Ra; Lester Bangs' rave review of the Temptations' Sky's the Limit — Jasper brings the episode to a close with his thoughts on early interviews with Alicia Keys (2001) and Amy Winehouse (2004). Many thanks to special guest Simon Raymonde. In One Ear: Cocteau Twins, Ivor and Me is published by Nine Eight Books and available now from all good bookshops. Visit the Bella Union Vinyl Shop at 25 Church St in Brighton and online at bellaunionvinylshop.com. Pieces discussed: Cocteau Twins, Cocteau Triplets, Cocteau Quadruplets, Dusty Springfield audio, Dusty Springfield: Dusty at 30... loneliness is an occasional thing, Sun Ra: Flying Saucers Coming To Take Me Away, Ha Ha!, The Temptations: Sky's the Limit, Alicia Keys: Move over Macy and Whine and Song; Amy Winehouse hits out at girl singers and why she's one of the very best.
