In our first Share the Chair episode of 2025, we welcome talented jazz musician and educator, Tobi Stone. Tobi has played an important part of CH's own journey into jazz musicianship, and after almost a year's worth of planning (yes, really!), finally got the chance to sit down to talk all-things musical life journey - from Tobi discovering her passion for music at a young age; to knowing early on that she wanted to teach in addition to perform; to the key influences and experiences that have helped shape her career - including recovering from an early injury during her time studying jazz performance at the University of Washington. Tobi's uplifting approach to music education, and her ongoing efforts to support aspiring young musicians - especially female musicians - is all part of her goal to create an inclusive, empowering environment that blends the art of playing with the joy of teaching. Whether you're a jazz enthusiast, an aspiring musician, or simply curious about the life of a professional musical artist, this episode has a little bit of everything. Show Notes For those looking for more information on Tobi, you can visit her official Web site, Tobi Stone Music (tobistone.com). It is part of the Washington Center for Performance Arts Women In Jazz Series. The influential substitute teacher that inspired and influenced Tobi's early appreciation for the saxophone is professional saxophonist, Darren Motamedy. The non-profit Tobi has started that aims to elevate musicianship of under served communities is called Kindred Blue Notes. Additional information can be found on KindredBlueNotes.org. Tobi also is a long-standing faculty member of Seattle's Jazz Night School, where she teaches various combos and also offers private lessons. Arts and Entertainment: Rancho Cordova is known as the "City of Events" and houses one of the best Art Complex in our region The MACC. The City has its own orchestra, Symphony D'oro, a Swing Dance Band, a Black Box Theatre, and features one of the largest July 4th fireworks displays in the region, and a whole slate of large outdoor events. Every month Director/ Curator of The MACC, Cheryl Gleason speaks to visual artists, musicians, actors, theatre groups as well as other notable influencers in the art scene in the Sacramento Region. It is not uncommon to hear people marvel at the explosion of the arts in Rancho Cordova, and for good reason. Where ever you go in our city, you are likely to experience a bit of art – whether painted on the side of a utility box, as music heard wafting through a grocery store or enjoyed during a casual wander through the Mills Station Arts and Culture Center. It's true that the arts have continued to grow in Rancho Cordova in so many ways that it is easy to forget that it has been only 10 years since this spark was ignited, and how the wonderful Marsha Mason has guided it to success. Marsha brought a background as a landscape architect with experience running large programs in the public sector to Rancho Cordova's newborn arts movement back in 2012. She was CEO of Sites Pacific, Inc., a landscape architectural firm specializing in public works projects and visual impact assessments. She taught landscape architecture courses as a lecturer at U.C. Davis. Marsha served as President of the Sierra Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, was a founder of WalkSacramento. Those skills all come together in 2012 as Marsha joined a small group of local artists to work with the Cordova Community Council to form what has become known as “Rancho Cordova Arts.” That year, the first City Hall exhibit launched with a fine art exhibit of local artists aptly named “Genesis.” Most artists are content – and prefer -- to simply work on their art, but Marsha is not like most artists. Understanding the importance of having an organization of people committed to an artistic future, she rolled up her sleeves to accomplish less glamourous foundational tasks like creating a non-profit organization, developing a website, creating a newsletter and focusing artistic energy in the community to produce memorable art events.

Based in Lexington, Kentucky it is an active and enthusiastic Theatre Group with events and activities taking place year-round. Their mission is to promote and produce quality, thought-provoking LGBTQ+-themed theater in and around the Central Kentucky region in a positive, supportive, and non-judgmental manner. The play 5 Lesbians Eating Quiche, co-written by Andrew Hobgood and Evan Linder, finds five women assembled in a church basement (along with the audience – this is an interactive play) for the 1956 annual meeting of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein's annual quiche breakfast. The normally idyllic gathering, where the motto is “no men, no meat, all manners,” is upended when the Society's matriarchs must confront the startling revelation that an atom bomb may be falling on their fair city. As fears are confronted and confessions fly, the chipper ladies stay firm in their commitment that the quiche is a mighty thing and that one must “respect the egg”.Marty Wayman is Director, Kris Ratliff plays Wren - The Events Chairperson, and Suraya Shalash plays Dale - The Historian. The show lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes and is appropriate for women, men and young adults over 13.Performances at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center, 141 East Main Street, Lexington, KYFriday, Saturday, June 9 and 10, 8 o'clock curtain.Friday, Saturday, June 16 and 17, 8 o'clock curtain.Sunday, June 18, 2 o'clock curtain.

Curtis Stigers joined Marc Roberts ahead of his fourth coming show in The Black Box Theatre, Galway on the 20th of November. Curtis Stigers drives his publicists crazy. For the past 30 years, the singer, songwriter, saxophonist and guitarist has been making records that confound those who try to categorise his music or put him in a box. He's recorded a track for one of the biggest-selling pop albums of all time and he's released nine critically-acclaimed, award-winning jazz albums. He's played for presidents and princes and he's appeared in two Seth MacFarlane movies about a foul-mouthed cuddly bear called Ted. For Episode 6 of the #LovinLebanon Podcast, we sit down with Emily Wolfgang, executive director of the theatre company. Emily shares how and why the theatre was founded, what she hopes performers and families gain from their experiences, as well as the organization's plans for future growth. “My whole thing was like I just wanna grow my neighbourhood, grow BC, grow Kelowna. Me just like creating this platform for all these kids to express themselves get their music out, look good for social media, and that’s good for them. Because some kids maybe only get to play like one show a year or two shows a year but a guy like me is lucky. I get to play multiple shows a year so if one show I don’t get to play but everybody had a great time and I had a great time and it was great then I got more shows in the new year its all good. You’re gonna see me again.” Heatwave is a rapper based out of Vancouver and CEO of Heatwave Multimedia. He’s travelled all across the world with artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Chris Brown, and Ice Cube just to name a few. With the success and notoriety he’s built over the years he’s created Heatwave Multimedia to allow new artists to flourish by providing a recording studio for everyone, avenues for touring and social media promotion. He ended up bringing a bunch of people to perform with him like Young Ivany and Nes Gone Global to the Black Box Theatre on December 22nd and it went on for so long that we ended up going to Denny’s for this interview which lasted till 2:30am. Anything to get it done you know? Anyway I hope you enjoy it!

“Kelowna had a lot of energy, it was crazy, the support was real, moved a lot of CDs and rage bro it was fun as hell.” iLL Chris is a very hard hitting rapper with a distinctive bite to his vocal delivery and choice of beats. He headlined a show at the Black Box Theatre in Kelowna, BC on October 29th, 2018 and I managed to capture an interview with him after the show. I’m incredibly thankful and appreciate of his time and energy for doing this interview. He spoke about his OG days of killing the battle rap scene around 2004 - 2005, meeting Ski Mask the Slump God, XXXTENTACION and sharing never heard before stories about the high energy and tumultuous relationship he had with X. We try some of their great food (the sauerkraut and corned beef bites are like "little fried Ruebens," notes Shane) and talk about the history of the eatery, along with the unique Black Box Theatre, that’s also part of the building. If you do celebrate St. Patrick’s with a drink or two, be sure to have a designated driver or call an Uber, Lyft or cab. Also, check out our Facebook page for a video from this episode. And for info about the restaurant, visit https://www.pubbricco.com/.
In GBA 316 we get better acquainted with Kas. She talks about her journey through performance, from playing the White Witch in primary school, to dancing in Pride and Prejudice, to working with Teatro Vivo to make immersive theatre that engages with locations and communities. When we recorded this conversation last week Kas was 8 months pregnant so we also talk about how that has intersected with performance and life. Dr Reginald is the founder and Pastor of Heart Cry Church (HCC) he found himself planting a church in the Black Box Theatre located near the naval base in Indian Head, Maryland. Given a spiritual vision by the Lord in 2015, but oddly not like other visions before…howbeit this would be a vision executed in a very strategic manner. Holy Spirit showed that in order to subdue, tear down and execute HCC would have to experience a radical paradigm shift, hence church done differently (The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. Prov. 11:30). The Lord continued to speak to Dr. Woodard that in order to hear the heart cry of others (people) HCC must have our ears hallowed out. Making distinction with hearing through ears of religion, formula and protocol in exchange for hearing as He hears the heart cry of His people. HCC is in the interim of establishing a multi-cultural ministry and the three areas of concentration in our ministry are indiscriminately showing the love of Jesus Christ without partiality (loving people to life), the sound of the house being one of worship (every house has a sound) and the Word of God taught with clarity, simplicity and understanding.
