This week on Truth To Power, we bring you an important conversation in the face of the 2026 mid-term elections. On January 15th, 120 Oberlin College alumni and friends participated in a widely anticipated online program called "What is the Democratic Party?" Professor Larry Jacobs of the University of Minnesota served as moderator for an energetic conversation that featured Holly Fechner and John Lawrence, both of whom worked for Democratic members of Congress and have decades of experience working in politics. Comments by Holly and John reflected optimism for the Democrats to take control of the House, but they considered prospects for the Democrats to take the Senate to be not so promising but possible. Historical trends favoring the opposition party in midterm elections, the unpopularity of Trump, and negative perceptions of the economy are among the key factors now favoring the Democrats. Wildcards that could trip the Democrats include disenfranchisement of Democratic-leaning voters through redistricting, restricting mail-in and early voting options, and deployments of military and other security forces to intimidate voters. It was posited that the Democrats still needed to change their approach and widen their appeal across class lines, because of perceptions that the Party is too West/East Coastal, too old, and too beholden to donors and the educated elite. Alternatively, it was argued that the Democrats have been pursuing policies that advance the welfare of “regular” Americans by pursuing policy initiatives that address “affordability,” health care, educational opportunities, and the environment, but the Party's messaging can get sidetracked by “cultural” issues that are important, but are distracting to the general populace. To wit, the priority of selecting candidates who could win elections was illustrated by a quote from former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who said that Democrats on the Hill would be merely resigned to having “a conversation” if they lacked majority control of the House. Panelists highlighted examples across America's history in which the forces of “illiberalism” were overcome, and they maintained that public protests are important to build solidarity and demonstrate the resilience of the opposition. „Mit dem Sammeln beginnen sofort Tätigkeiten des Klassifizierens, Sortierens und Einteilens“, sagt Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Struck. Wir sammeln Dinge, sie werden aufgehoben, geordnet und archiviert. Doch Sammeln ist keine neutrale Praxis. Es entscheidet darüber, was erinnert und aufbewahrt werden soll – und was verschwindet. Es ist eine Kulturtechnik, die auf Auswahlprozessen beruht, Machtverhältnisse impliziert und Ausschlüsse generiert, mit der Wissen entsteht und Geschichte erzählt wird. Doch was passiert, wenn Sammlungen zu groß werden – in Museen, Archiven, aber auch in der eigenen Forschung? „Museen sind verpflichtet, alle einmal aufgenommenen Sammlungsgegenstände für alle Zeiten zu bewahren – das ist eine Wahnsinnsforderung“, sagt Wolfgang Struck. Ob kommende Generationen unser Bewahrenswertes noch immer für so bewahrenswert finden werden, stellt er in dieser Folge in Frage und weist daraufhin, dass Museen sich dringend der Tatsache stellen müssen, „dass sie selber Teil eines Prozesses sind, Neuverhandlungen darüber zu führen, was relevant ist und was nicht.“ Überhaupt ließen sich doch gerade erst im Loslassen neue Perspektiven eröffnen. „In dem Moment, in dem ich aussortiere, entsteht eine Sammlung“, sagt Dr. Jana Mangold. Neben klassischen und neueren Sammlungstheorien geht Jana Mangold in dieser Folge auch auf gegenwärtige Debatten um Deaccession, also das Entsammeln in der Museumspraxis, ein – auch im Kontext kolonialer Fragen: „Objekte aus Unrechtskontexten können nicht einfach Eigentum von Kolonialmächten sein.“ Sammeln und Entsammeln versteht Mangold nicht als gegensätzliche Handlungen, sondern als miteinander verschränkte Prozesse. Zusammen mit Wolfgang Struck spricht sie sich aus für das geordnete Chaos, aber auch das bewusste Begrenzen, Reduzieren und Loslassen von Material als einer zentralen Voraussetzung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis – und verrät, weshalb sich das notwendige Gespür für Relevanz weder formal noch algorithmisch ersetzen lässt. Dass der Wert einer großen und bislang kaum erschlossenen Sammlung erheblich gesteigert werden kann, berichtet Nadine Fechner. In dem semesterübergreifenden Seminar „Die kleine Freiheit“ konnten durch sie erschlossene Fotos, die öffentliche Feste in Gotha zu DDR-Zeiten zeigen, mit den persönlichen Erinnerungen durch Gothaer Bürger*innen verbunden werden. Damit hätten „die Studierenden die Lücke zwischen dem, was offiziell überliefert wurde und dem, was individuell erinnert wird, analysiert und damit Geschichte als etwas Dynamisches erfahren“, erklärt Fechner und ergänzt, dass „das Archiv so wieder zu einem partizipativen Ort des Forschens und Erinnerns wurde.“ Geschichte, haben die Studierenden gelernt, sei „kein abgeschlossenes und feststehendes Narrativ“, die Studierenden hätten vielmehr verstanden, dass die Realität in der DDR aus Grauzonen bestand und „so auch im Kontrast zu den großen Staatsnarrativen stehen, wie hier der offiziellen Geschichte der DDR.“ Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Struck ist Professor für Neuere deutsche Literatur an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Erfurt. Sein Interesse gilt den vielfältigen Überlagerungen von Literatur, Wissen und Wissenschaft. Dr. Jana Mangold ist wissenschaftliche Koordinatorin der Forschungsgruppe „Kulturtechniken des Sammelns“. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der Materialität und Formaten der Popkultur, in Gebrauchsweisen reproduzierter Abbildungen und Formen des Archivs. Nadine Fechner ist Projektmitarbeiterin im Kooperationsprojekt „Kulturtechniken des Sammelns“ mit der Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein Gotha. Nous sommes en 1941. Cette année-là est publié, à Buenos Aires, un recueil intitulé « El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan » (Le jardin aux sentiers qui bifurquent). L'ouvrage est signé Jorge Luis Borges qui, à l'époque, à quarante-deux ans. Parmi les textes proposés par l'auteur plusieurs fois nommé pour le prix Nobel de littérature, on retrouve « La bibliothèque de Babel ». L'Argentin y conçoit un univers où serait rassemblés tous les livres pouvant être produits par combinaison aléatoire des lettres d'un alphabet choisi. Ce fantasme d'une bibliothèque totale, contenant tous les savoirs de l'humanité, n'est pas neuf : on en trouve des sources chez certains philosophes de l'antiquité gréco-romaine, plus tard chez le philosophe allemand Leibniz ou chez les Encyclopédistes du siècle des Lumières. Borges, d'ailleurs, attribue la paternité du concept à l'un des pères de la psychologie expérimentale, Gustav Théodore Fechner. Quelle est, réellement, la valeur ajoutée d'un tel savoir ? La bibliothèque de Babel, parce qu'elle contient tout, n'est-elle pas parfaitement dénué de sens ? Internet, aujourd'hui, par sa volonté totalisante, en est-il l'effrayante réalisation ? Heinz. Ob ein Altersvorsorgedepot der Weisheit letzter Schluss ist, dürfe derweil bezweifelt werden. Nach Ansicht des Verbands sollte flankierend das bestehende Riester-System reformiert, entbürokratisiert und vereinfacht werden. This episode of Living Myth tells the story of Gustave Fechner, a scientist and professor of physics who went blind while doing experiments involving human sight. After years of living in utter darkness, his eyesight returned, bringing with it a renewed vision of the world. After decades of looking at the world through the lens of physics and the hard sciences, Fechner had a spiritual awakening that brought a deeply personal connection to the living pulse of nature.   Having dwelt for years in darkness, the doctor had developed a kind of vision that revealed the living soul of nature. His book on The Soul Life of Plants showed how plants and trees are part of an ensouled world. It was an international best seller for over seventy-five years.  Dr. Fechner became a renowned teacher of natural philosophy and “psychophysics,” a branch of psychology which refuted the artificial separation between mind and body, between subject and object.   In the great lost and found of the cosmos, important knowledge keeps being forgotten. It also keeps trying to become conscious again, but tends to do so after we have experienced a period of darkness. When the world turns dark again, as it has now, it's important to know that the inner light of the soul is not a reflection from the outer world, but an inner light itself, a visionary flame that burns with emotional heat and vitality, but also with a capacity for illumination.   Everyone has access to a key that can open the door to a meaningful life, yet each must enter their own darkness in order to discover it. We surveyed parents a few months ago about where they stood with regards to allowing (or not allowing) sleepovers for their kids.  The reviews were heavy on the “no way” or “family only” but there were quite a few parents landing on “yes, they're fun and such a great childhood memory!” And they are and were!    In the internet age, information is coming at us at lightning speed.  So, we know more.  In real time.  What do we do with that knowledge? Hedge fund manager, Hugh Hendry, again invites his former colleague, Tom Roderick, who manages macro at Trium in London, to review the revelatory and impending bust of China's legendary Evergrande Property. Macro hasn't been seen in Chinese waters for almost a decade. A strong currency with a positive carry and a stock market seemingly impervious to shocking state interventions has ensured a lack of willing naysayers. The Acid Capitalist, Hugh, and Tom, explains how China's property companies were the safest stocks in the global sector owing to their ability to transfer risk quickly. That the least risky companies are now in jeopardy does not bode well especially as Chinese property, relative to household wealth, is 4x greater than in the US.
