Today, we have Allie's dad, Ron Simmons, here to break down the ongoing tariffs with China and other countries and to bring some sense to what's happening with Trump's trade deals. We also talk about the Trump administration bringing refugees over from South Africa, despite the Left's outrage over the deportations of illegal migrants. But will these weekend victories help Trump's approval ratings? And while certain state bills are stalled or on the floor, Ron shares some valuable advice and recommendations for voters who wish to talk to their representatives about their concerns.   Samantha is the oldest of Scott and Julie Seal's children. Her brother Bennett graduated from PCA in 2023, and her sister Emerson is currently a freshman at PCA (class of 2027).   Samantha's favorite memories of PCA begin with the powerful influence of her minimester trips! She was also very involved in PCA Theatre and was a very strong academic student. She matriculated from PCA to The University of Texas at Austin where she graduated in 2023. Samantha was also very involved in PBC's youth choir and their choir mission trips and Fall Follies.   Samantha appreciates the Biblical worldview foundation that was established and cultivated during her time at PCA, especially with her involvement in Student Leadership Institute (SLi) and the Biblical Worldview Institute conferences each year.   Samantha was encouraged to apply to UT, an institution that is clearly unfriendly to a Biblical worldview - and she was asked by Dr. Moss if she needed more time in the temple or if she was ready to go to Babylon (metaphor for UT and the world). As Samantha prayed about where the Lord would want her to attend college, she felt the Lord leading her to UT and felt prepared and equipped by her time at PCA for the challenges and opportunities ahead of her in Austin! While at UT, Samantha worked for the Texas State Legislature and found her passion for politics!   Be praying for Samantha as she is currently living and working in Washington D.C. as the Special Assistant to Executive Director Chad Wolf and Strategic Communications Coordinator at America First Policy Institute.   PCA Alumni - Please update your personal contact information here and if you would like to connect with Alex Bellamy, Director of PCA Relations, you can email her at abellamy@prestonwoodchristian.org Special shout out to Jared Wood for allowing us to use his music - check him out at JaredWoodMusic!

Guest: Matt Shaheen Excited to have my Texas State Representative Matt Shaheen share about all things related to the MARCH 1st PRIMARY ELECTION! Early voting has already begun and will be open from Feb. 14-25 - so make sure you get out and vote. Remember, the Primary Election is the opportunity to select your preferred candidate from within your particular political party - so this is not Democrats vs. Republicans, but you're voting for your preferred candidate in one party and the winner of the Primary Election will face off against the candidate from the other political party in the November Election. Also, don't forget that many of these contested elections will have RUN-OFFS - and there is an even smaller voter turnout for these elections - so don't sleep on the process - get out and vote and then pay attention to the results and see if the candidates that you wanted are going to be in a run-off election later in April or May. Finally, there has been some redistricting from the Texas State Legislature that went into effect in January - so you need to check before you go vote to see who is representing you! Check out this Who Represents Me site made available from the Texas Capitol. Also, visit the county elections site for your particular county to find out about voting locations and even to download a sample ballot for the primary election: Collin County residents Denton County residents Dallas County residents As always, we are grateful to live in a free country where we have an opportunity and responsibility to be part of the governing process - elections are important, so be an informed and active citizen and vote! One consideration I use for selecting quality candidates is the advice that Jethro gave to Moses in Exodus 18:20 where he suggested that Moses select leaders who 1) are capable, 2) fear God, 3) are trustworthy, and 4) hate dishonest gain. In other words, look for men and women of character who are able to actually do the job that you are selecting them to do!

They discuss the trajectory of the voting rights struggle since Ari wrote his book, the amount of laws like this going through statehouses across the country, the "godfather of redistricting" Richard Hofeller, John Roberts's lifelong crusade against the Voting Rights Act, Republicans "institutionalizing the Big Lie", what Ari would do if Joe Biden asked him how to bring federal voting rights legislation home through this Congress ahead of the President's big speech today in Philadelphia, and how filibuster reform is what all of these discussions run through. And in the fun half, former Trump State Department spox Morgan Ortagus gets her Asian countries mixed up when coining her catchphrase "the Genocide Olympics" on Fox News, Dave Rubin wonders aloud why no towns in Africa have been wiped out due to COVID, a NewsMax interview gets weird when Rob Finnerty asks a medical doctor "...why should vaccines...get in the way of nature?" House Minority Leader and Martin Luther King acolyte Kevin McCarthy sermonizes with Dave Rubin (in a repeat appearance on the program) about how the late Reverend would despise Critical Race Theory, and Maria Bartiromo wonders aloud with the former President as to why Ashli Babbitt was shot "climbing out of a window" on January 6th (????) For this reason, the Republicans in the Texas State Legislature are attempting to carve out policies that undemocratically depress the votes of the Democratic base in the county. Roland Martin has a wake-up call one hopes that the Democratic Party heeds sooner than later because it is existential for many of us. Allyson McKinney visited Politics Done Right to discuss her work with the organization she founded, Justice Revival. She made it clear that Christians have a responsibility to justice, equality, and much more. She was clear, as was her website with her mission and vision. The mission is to inspire, educate, and mobilize Christian communities to respond faithfully to the call to justice by standing in solidarity with the oppressed and defending the human rights of all. And the vision is is a just and equitable society in which every person can experience abundant life because the human dignity of all people is respected, the human rights of all are safeguarded, and all are treated as beloved members of the human family formed in the image of God. --- If you like what we do please do the following! Texas has gone off the grid…. LITERALLY! The week of February 14, 2021 the electrical grid in the State of Texas, it’s independent in case you didn’t know, virtually shut down completely. My guest Craig McCartney breaks down the tragedy that caused millions of Texans to remain without power for days causing people to lose the ability to heat their homes. People died of hypothermia, water pipes busted causing billions in damage, the sewer backed up in the streets, grocery store shelves were completely bare and the so called “rolling blackouts” provided electricity for barely a few. All the while Senator Ted Cruz, #FledCruz, found it all entirely unbearable and fled the country with his family to Mexico leaving his precious poodle home alone. But probably the most devastating thing of all to happen was the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott had to call President Joe Biden and ask for help. In Texas relying on the federal government for anything is looked upon as treason to the Lone Star State. Fortunately the lights came back on after several days, the weather warmed up and now the Texas State Legislature has to decide should they power forward along the status quo or completely deconstruct the isolationist approach that caused all this in the first place.

"There are all these pressures and talks about how do you make your career. How do you make a living? How do you make it sustainable? How do you be an entrepreneur as an artist. And they are all great sounding, very trendy. But at the same time I want to come back and say, why did you want to be an artist? And what makes you want to wake up in the morning and run to the studio and make that thing. At the very beginning it was never for money, it was never for fame. It was something that’s driving you, that’s eating you inside. You have to get it out. How do we hold ourselves accountable? How do we know we are doing something that’s meaningful to ourselves first? And therefore it is meaningful for our viewers. If I am spending hours and weeks and months to make this thing, why am I making it. And what does it mean to people when they are seeing it. It has to be beyond, wow this is beautiful, or this is really cool. It has to mean something. To me and to them." Beili Liu is an installation artist who for most of her practice has focused on the use of space to create transformative experiences for herself and the viewer. She experiments with and puts a lot of emphasis on the exploration of materials, process, and time. Drawing from her life and cultural memory the works often explore issues that she relates to on a personal level and often highlight the importance of feminine strength through the use of meaningful repetition, mending, healing and resilience. And as a teacher who is a working artist she is also able to guide and inspire her students with the wisdom she has gained doing installations and exhibiting her work all over the world. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/4/41335247-836c-4f4a-8a8b-aeca55f3227a/BBLiRoC1.jpg Beili installing AMASS at University Gallery, Texas State University, San Marcos in 2013 Photo by Scott David Gordon (http://www.beililiu.com/Amass) https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/4/41335247-836c-4f4a-8a8b-aeca55f3227a/fbMq47hZ.jpg Lure/Rise, Chinese Culture Foundation, San Francisco, photo by Frank Jang (http://www.beililiu.com/Lure) Bio courtesy of Beili's website Beili Liu is a visual artist who creates material and process-driven, site‑responsive installations. Oftentimes embodying transience, fragility, and the passage of time, Liu’s immersive installations are engaged with multifaceted dichotomies: lightness contrasted with heft, fierceness countered by resilience, and chaos balanced by quiet order. Working with commonplace materials and elements such as thread, scissors, paper, stone, fire, and water, Liu manipulates their intrinsic qualities to extrapolate complex cultural narratives. Liu’s work has been exhibited in Asia, Europe and across the United States. She has held solo exhibitions at venues such as the Hå Gamle Prestegard, Norwegian National Art and Culture Center (2016, 2011), Hua Gallery, London, UK (2012), Galerie An Der Pinakothek Der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2011), Elisabeth de Brabant Art Center, Shanghai (2009), and the Chinese Culture Foundation, San Francisco (2015, 2008). "As incompetent and bumbling as the Trump Administration has been in so many areas, they have been brutally ruthless on immigration." -- Jose Chito Vela, Immigration Attorney and Candidate for Texas State Legislature It’s been a year since the Presidential election of 2016 and the night the world turned upside down and inside out. Polls showed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton ahead by a solid margin. But by the end of the night, the networks had declared Donald Trump the next President of the United States. Now, one year later, the Trump Presidency is in turmoil. On Monday, October 30, Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairperson was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on charges of tax evasion, submitting false statements, and illegally laundering more than 18 million dollars. The most serious charge of money laundering carries a possible prison sentence of up to 20 years. It was also reported on Monday, that George Papadopoulos, one of Trump’s campaign advisers, had plead guilty back in July to lying to the FBI about his contact with a Russian professor who had ties to the Russian Government. The charges in Washington are disturbing, but President Trump continues to hold the highest office in the land, with the power to enforce his campaign promise to rid the US of undocumented immigrants. On September 5, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced an end to the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, but said they would give Congress six months to try and save the policy. In our most recent episode, Life UnDACAmented, we presented an update on our January 2016 story about a young man who came to the US as a child and had taken his fight for DACA status to the immigration courts.  You a find the audio on itunes, or on our websitelifeofthelaw.org. Mmmmmaverick. Maverick, Maverick, Maverick. Maverick, Maverick, Maverick, Maverick. Maverick. Is it just my imagination, or are we hearing this word a whole LOT more lately? You usually hear it applied a politician who's staunchly independent and stubbornly non-conformist. But where'd we get an odd word like this? The answer involves a Texas political dynasty that added not one, but two, familiar words to English.Samuel Augustus Maverick was 19th-century Texas lawyer who went into politics. He was elected mayor of San Antonio in 1839 and later served in the Texas State Legislature. He also speculated in land deals. And he owned cattle, which he kept on a 385,000-acre ranch. In those days, cattlemen didn't always fence in their land, which meant their animals often roamed free. So, ranchers branded their cattle to prevent theft, and resolve disputes over ownership. Well, all the ranchers, that is, except for Samuel Maverick. Maverick was notorious for refusing to brand his own livestock. So whenever his neighbors saw an animal without a brand, especially a calf that had strayed from its mother, they'd say things like, 'Oh, that must be a Maverick.'Maverick told people he considered branding cruelty to animals. Skeptics, though, charged that by refusing to brand his animals, Maverick could then lay claim to any unbranded cattle as his own.Over the years, this term for a 'stray, unmarked calf' also came to apply to any kind of strong-willed nonconformist, particularly a politician not 'branded' by special interests. And the linguistic legacy of this Texas family goes even further. The Mavericks can take credit for yet another familiar English word that involves politics: That word is gobbledygook. Ggggobbledygook, gobbledygook, gobbledygook, gobbledy--well, you get the picture. Anyway, it turns out that Samuel Maverick's grandson, Maury Maverick, also went into politics, eventually serving in the U.S. Congress. A folksy, plainspoken Texan, Maury Maverick was appalled by the fog of stuffy, obfuscatory, bureaucratic language that hangs over and permeates Washington. In 1944, he penned an official memo to his colleagues and subordinates, urging them to speak and write in plain English. The memo read in part: 'Stay off the gobbledygook language. It only fouls people up. For Lord's sake, be short and say what you're talking about... Anyone using the words 'activation' and 'implementation' will be shot!' Talk about a real Maverick.Congressman Maverick later said he wasn't sure why the crazy word gobbledygook popped into his mind at just that moment. 'Perhaps,' he said, 'I was thinking of the old bearded turkey gobbler back in Texas who was always gobbledy-gobblin' and struttin' with ludicrous pomposity. At the end of this gobble there was a sort of â 'gook.''In any case, both 'gobbledygook' and 'maverick' turned out to be way too useful to be forgotten. Both found their way into dictionaries--and onto the front page, especially in this election year.--Get your language question answered on the air!
