We live in a hurried world. The modern conveniences that are touted to "save time'" are keeping us busier than ever. We over-schedule, over-commit, and end each day exhausted and already focused on the demands of tomorrow.Quite often, it is our relationships with God and our family that suffer the absence of our time and attention. Do you spend time each day praying, reading the Bible, journaling? Is family time devoted to spending time in communion with each other? Are we setting examples we hope our children will follow? The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry offers tangible suggestions for living an unhurried life. The book encourages us to spend more time focusing on love, joy, and peace, and less time in a frantic state of constant motion. If you are seeking a peace-filled life, listen up.Show Notes:The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World by John Mark Comer

That's about emotions and feelings, two things men are scared to death because they're not used to talking about them.” “Getting something is easy. Anybody can get something. Sustaining it is a different level of character. Multiplying is another different level of character.” “We have to learn how to nourish the relationship, nourish the person, the partnership. And it takes consistency.” “The reason why men won't talk about their feelings is because they're afraid of being judged. And the worst thing you can do is judge a man when he finally does open up.” “If you want your man to open up, you've got to create a safe space. You've got to be the safest place on earth for him.” “Being present, showing up with an open heart, and just being available for the people around you is the greatest gift you can give.” BOOKS MENTIONED: Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most by Greg McKeown (https://a.co/d/5LXXbhk) Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown (https://a.co/d/24jbrkB) The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World by John Mark Comer (https://a.co/d/2N9kuHI) PODCAST MENTIONED: Elevation with Steven Furtick (https://tinyurl.com/ElevationSFPodcast) USEFUL RESOURCES: https://www.thechristinejewell.com https://www.instagram.com/thechristinejewell https://www.linkedin.com/in/christine-jewell-9361612a/ https://www.facebook.com/thechristinejewell https://www.youtube.com/@christinejewell Breaking Chains Podcast (https://pod.link/1579338652) Drop the Armor: Release the Past, Ignite Your Faith, and Unlock an Extraordinary Life (https://a.co/d/2fbPUwg) CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://thejohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/johnhulen LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/
What does it mean to be a “practicing Christian”? That's the question that Russell Moore and his guest, author John Mark Comer, consider on this episode of The Russell Moore Show. The two discuss Comer's new book, Practicing the Way, which welcomes people into spiritual formation through ancient practices. They talk about discerning God's will for our lives, how Comer decided to step away from his role as lead pastor of a church he planted, and what it looks like to invite people into discipleship. Comer shares how he met Jesus, what it's like to talk about God on the West Coast, and why so many people no longer resonate with American church services. They explore how churches can cultivate richer discipleship, the power of deep friendships, and the practice of contemplative prayer. Tune in for an episode that is replenishing, full of guidance, and sheds light on why being an apprentice to Jesus is less like learning chemistry and more like learning jujitsu. At our last Coffee & Connection event at Workshop Local, Anna Nash shared some vulnerable and comical personal stories of her own tendency towards multi-tasking, helping us get to the heart of why so many of us struggle in this area. Anna also gave us some practical tips to help us move to a more peaceful, slower pace as we seek to live a more purposeful life. Learn with us: "So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you." Romans 12:1,2 (Message) “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28 (Message) Mark 6:30-44 Jesus Feeds the 5,000 Suggested reading: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World by John Mark Comer and John Ortberg A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. It improves overall well-being, too.On today's show podcaster Diane Boden and I discuss exactly why it's so important to disconnect from modern distractions at least once in awhile; we also brainstorm how to best unplug. We are so excited to share this conversation with y'all! Dr. Dub is back and full of the wisdom and action steps we needed. We talk about the importance of living humbly regardless of your title or position and how to be more present with the people you encounter each day. Dr. Dub shares practical ways to focus our minds on scripture plus the daily & weekly disciplines that will change your life. We also asked for his book recommendations which inadvertently led us to our very own "book colloquium" (stay tuned!) and of course, we talk about our beloved college students and all the ways they bring us hope for the future. Y'all will love this conversation and will learn so much from Dr. Dub. We sure did! People think we have less agency than we actually do. We can take control of when we respond on social media. When people usher in a new year, there's often a rush to start fresh by creating a long list of resolutions and goals. This time, we're going to talk about one thing that people should put on top of the list of things they should not be carrying into 2024 — and that's busyness. As dads, there's often a pressure to always do something, whether it's for the family, the community, or for work. There's too much ‘pouring out' without realizing that there's not much room left for ‘filling up'. This is because we've all gotten used to the idea of busyness.Corrie Ten Boom says, “If the devil can't make you sin, he'll make you busy.” And when you're overly busy, you'll start missing the important things about life. Looking back at 2023, the most memorable parts weren't the time you spent on things you kept yourself busy on. The most memorable parts were the times you spent with family and friends, or the things you truly were passionate about. In this episode, we're going to talk about how you can build off of the momentum from last year and start working on things that put too much busyness into your life, and replace them with actions that will lead to a significant life. “We often get sucked into the busyness of life, and it distracts us from enjoying the little things and the more important things that are happening around us.” - Cam HallIn This Episode:Cam recalls moments from 2023 that could be used to kick off a new yearUnderstand the importance of removing clutter from your life as you go into 2024Learn why there should be no room for busyness in 2024Learn the importance of understanding what works for you and what doesn't instead of following what people are saying about New Year's resolutionsUnderstand the difference between being busy and being efficientLearn about the difference of feeling that you “have to” versus the ability to prepareThink about how big your dreams are for the new yearLearn how to leave a legacy by living a life of significance...and more!Resources mentioned:The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World10x Is Easier Than 2x: How World-Class Entrepreneurs Achieve More by Doing LessThe 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 MonthsConnect with Cam Hall:WebsiteDads Making A Difference Connection CallFacebookInstagramTwitterLinkedIn
Happy 2024, friends! We're starting the year off with Realist Idealist for another discussion... this time about the importance of rest. Realist Idealist has made a point over the past 8 months to incorporate scheduled rest into her schedule... turns out, it ain't so easy. We chat about her motivation to schedule rest, what's out of balance, the history of a sabbath day or full day of rest, the importance of recharging both psychologically and spiritually, and how her rest days change as her life ebbs and flows. Other topics that pop up are challenging the 9-5/8-4 Monday to Friday concept of work, questioning the control-based work schedules, and asking yourself if your life is full and is the schedule of your job working for you. It is important to note that rest looks different for everyone. It's a challenge to separate oneself from the constant dings and addictive nature of technology, but ultimately it helps us reset and rejuvenate. Additionally, taking a day of inactivity can be a huge challenge for many. Rest allows for a reset to happen, and can be incorporated into weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedules. It's something I'm actively focusing on, as it's a challenge for me to stop moving and just sit or lie still. Realist Idealist read the book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World by John Mark Comer before beginning her journey to rest more. Today we are going to talk about some of the highlights from a book that Brooke shared with me a couple of years ago. The content of this book smacked me in the face in all the best ways and is called, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer. The first words of this book are from the Gospel of Matthew in chapter 11 verses 28-30 when Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Every time I read these words, I feel a sense of comfort and find myself breathing more deeply. - Brian Marston F4 Host The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World https://a.co/d/0idfB9C --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/f4nc/support

Isn't it Lovely? Season 8 kicks off with Tracy and Rachel welcoming longtime dream guest and founder of Better Screen Time Andrea Davis to the show! Leaving guilt, shame, and fear at the door, Andrea instead educates and empowers listeners with countless tools, resources, and strategies to create technology habits that optimize enjoyment of screens in healthy ways. Andrea encourages families to establish routines and expectations for technology by creating a family tech plan, understanding the motivation of the three Cs (creating, connecting, and consuming), and having candid conversations about the responsibilities and personal accountability that precede a child having a phone. Andrea celebrates children being smart, curious, and human, recognizing the limitations of a one size fits all mentality and respectfully inviting kids into the reasoning and conversations behind decisions. Andrea and Rachel discuss a reconsideration of using screen time as part of a reward cycle; Tracy and Andrea explore the importance of identity and knowing oneself well enough to counteract social media messaging. Tracy and Rachel swoon over Andrea's multiple book recommendations and mic drop moments, all while attempting to master the art of the mute button. It's common for people to treat being busy as a badge of honor. There's guilt associated with not being productive and getting things done. This episode is about the overlooked importance of play. One of the reasons that people are so burned out and miserable is the lack of play, especially quality play with the ones they love. Our book club just finished Brene Brown's The Gifts Of Imperfection, where she talks about how we struggle with ideas of play and rest. I'm going to talk about how play is a critical aspect of the human experience and so important that we need to put resources towards having fun, playful experiences with our families and spending time doing fun things that aren't aimed at being productive. Episode Highlights: [02:29] Our book club just finished up The Gifts Of Imperfection by Brene Brown. She's one of my favorite authors, and I highly recommend her work. [02:53] One of the things she talks about is how we struggle with the idea of play and rest, because it goes along with the stigma of laziness. [03:11] We identify our importance and value by our busyness and overworking. We are proud of how over-packed our calendars are. [04:12] Instead of accepting busyness, we need to find a cure for it. [04:50] Play shouldn't be structured on something that we design. Play is unstructured time spent without a purpose. [06:26] We need to change the paradigm of saying no to our kids when they ask us to play, because we need to be doing productive work all of the time. Without play, we end up with exhaustion and discontent. [08:08] Board games and family game nights create space to play. [09:32] The studies are clear that the joy of play makes us infinitely more productive. [10:09] We need to make space to play. It reduces anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. [10:49] Play is time spent without purpose, something you don't want to end, and it leads to a loss of self-consciousness. [12:44] Through trial and error, figure out what works for you and your family. Give yourself permission to prioritize spending around your play. [14:31] What needs to happen for you to give yourself permission to play? [16:06] Remind your brain that play will make you more productive. [17:37] Play needs to be fulfilling, not just staring at a device. [17:56] Challenge: Look at your calendar and notice how overbooked you and your family are. Cut out the things that aren't fun and spend some money on what you and your family really enjoy and find engaging. According to Michael Batenburg, founder of Back2Basics Adventures, there are five stages for those in their faith development: clueless, curious, committed, convicted, discipling. This last stage, discipleship, is the ultimate path to building a strong foundation for your faith so that you can help others grow in their own. God created man from the ground, therefore it's no surprise that many men feel a deep inner connection to the wilderness. That's one reason Michael Batenburg is giving others a beautiful, comfortable environment to connect and be vulnerable through his outdoor ministry adventures. Back2Basics Adventures takes people on adventures all around the world, but they recently finished constructing a permanent location in Tennessee called Feather Ridge. Michael details all the amazing features of this new location, including its scenic surroundings and activities. Everyone gets busy with life's distractions, but sometimes all you need is a break to enjoy the beauty of God's creation. Want to Suggest a Question? To submit a question for James, Richella, and Nate to consider discussing on Friends in Formation, email friends@renovare.org.Show NotesThree Listener Questions—[2:35] My question concerns a phrase I hear you use often in Renovaré — referring to people as “Image Bearers.” I must admit this always makes me sit up as it was not a phrase I had encountered much. At first I wondered if it was just a poetic way of referring to humanity, but am coming to realize it is an important truth and attitude but one I feel I have lacked - I think because my evangelical background had focused more on the 'depravity of Man' and begins viewing humanity (especially oneself) from a position of sinfulness, where the Image of God is lost and only restored in Christ. Specifically, HOW you have learnt to see yourself and others as Image Bearers, not just as a theological belief but in practice, and how doing this helps your spiritual formation.[17:46] I am currently reading The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (and trying, reasonably, to take my time with it), and next on the list is Streams of Living Water. Some dear church friends have begun to visit the churches of other friends — ones they know have a true, deep relationship with God — who attend churches of different denominations, in order to gain a better appreciation and understanding of their traditions. I find myself wishing that we, too, had many friends of other denominations who could not only serve as our safeguards, but with whom we could afterward discuss their traditions and church's values, and process those of our own more objectively and reflectively. We would greatly appreciate any suggestions you could offer as to how to go about this.[31:33] From two different listeners in ministry positions: What do you do when you feel like you are in a setting that God hasn't called you to? I'm a new, young clergy, I graduated seminary last year and feel like I've been placed (or have fallen into) a ministry appointment doing work that I'm not called to do but am doing because I have the skills to do this work. What can I do to not just survive during this difficult season but thrive? And have hope that God did indeed call me into a life of ministry and I'm here in this space for a reason? After serving several different churches as a pastor for about 9 years, I am almost 1 year removed from professional pastoral ministry. I chose to stop working as a pastor because the added strain of COVID left me burnt out, depressed, and codependent. I am very grateful to say that I am in a much better place now than I have been for quite some time. I am healthier physically, mentally, and emotionally. God has provided for my family financially. My family and I are connected to a wonderful church. I can definitely tell, even now, that God has brought me to this place as a blessing to provide me with the healing I desperately needed. At the same time, I am struggling with being “set aside” from ministry. I had a very clear calling experience a couple years before my pastoral ministry started. Being a pastor is the only real full-time job that I've had before now. I am currently working at a factory, and while it is a blessing in many ways, I find myself constantly looking to what might be next. Do you have any advice on how to better live into and accept where God has me right now? I have no doubt that I am where God wants me to be, but I still find myself constantly thinking about and planning for any and every possible “next thing.” Resources The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World, by John Mark Comer Streams of Living Water, by Richard Foster Clinging: The Experience of Prayer, by Emilie Griffin

MOVIE DISCUSSION: Remember that wild Halloween Kills episode from last year? Melvin & Dan are ready to rock your world with a roaring sequel episode on Halloween Ends, a finale so bonkers it blows our minds! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 34-minutes talking about Werewolf by Night, the borderline TV-MA Marvel special on Disney Plus! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Melvin and Daniel talk around the movie before actually getting into specifics, because that's what Halloween Ends has done to your hosts. Spoilers from the get-go, as Melvin and Daniel realize they can't discuss the movie much without getting into specifics. Daniel clocked it; it takes 40 minutes before Michael Myers even shows up in Halloween Ends. You practically forget it's a Halloween movie by this point. Daniel, "This really feels like a strange episode, a Halloween-themed episode of Twin Peaks." In isolation, a lot of the new ideas throughout Halloween Ends are neat, but the way all of them are used and balanced here is very poor. Melvin & Daniel agree: the diner scene is when the movie starts to lose them. There's actually a lot to appreciate and enjoy about Halloween Ends, including its general mood and atmosphere. Unlike most movies, all three of these Halloween features are exceptional at capturing atmosphere and look very sleek. As movie lovers, how we enjoy movies becomes much more complicated, as even the worst movies like Halloween Ends can become more enjoyable than the most competent ones. Melvin suspects the marketing, and the fact that this is a "trilogy finale" and not just another sequel with the expectation of another sequel soon after really impacts the reception and enjoyment of Halloween Ends. Melvin & Dan suspect Halloween Ends will earn a strange reevaluation as a black sheep in the Halloween franchise, largely due to its extremely strange ideas. Isn't it Lovely? Season 6 continues exploring themes of healing and identity as Rachel and Tracy sit down with AsOne Ministries Founder and CEO Andrew DeVaney. Andrew shares the personal faith journey that ultimately led him to encounter the love of Jesus in a profound and transformational way, while also allowing him to deconstruct elements of faith in an attempt to better understand where God is in the midst of global challenges, such as genocide, hunger, and poverty. Andrew's immersive experiences in other cultures and the resulting relationships created the opportunity to develop a model to help combat global issues while empowering cultures and supporting dignity, creativity, and agency. Andrew encourages a consideration that the beauty and image of God are present in all cultures, resisting the notion of superior nations or ways of life. He invites listeners to step into their own unique purposes as beautiful creations with specific work to do by pursuing healing and creating the space to slow down and ask the questions, “Who are we becoming?” versus “What do we do?”. Rachel realizes that Andrew's love of sandwiches, coffee, and books makes him the perfect third host of the podcast and invites him to join; Tracy notes that the What Are You Loving? segment has a budget-friendly theme. There are all sorts of tools out there that help identify our personalities, but how can these be useful in the sanctifying work of God in our lives? In this episode, Paul resumes the conversation with Dr. Shannon Raikes and Enneagram Coach, Stacie Joiner, to learn from their experience working with the Enneagram and inner healing prayer. We hope you feel invited into greater self-exploration, which we believe will give you more grace with yourself and others. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Kristan Chavious and Quincy Jordan, two returning guests and colleagues. In this episode, they are discussing the very special topic of empathy and how it can be a challenge to practice it in fast-paced settings; it can be tough to reconcile empathy with moving fast but there is a significant value in it. Key Takeaways Different ways to bring empathy into an Agile Team: Empathy is known as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. Empathy is also being able to understand someone else's values. Get outside of your personal experience to see it through the eyes of others and connect with their emotional and psychological response to an event. Leading Agile Teams is different than leading traditional teams. An Agile Team is self-organized but a leader needs to support the decisions that the Team members make versus telling them what to do. Displaying a level of empathy allows the Team to grow; no Team starts as a high-performance Team, it evolves into one. In traditional teams, the work done is prioritized: “Just get it done.” Empathy in Self-managed Teams: Expectations must be addressed, especially in regard to job descriptions. Team members have to know that they have permission to make certain decisions. The culture needs to be shifted from fearing failure to celebrating it. Leaders must be able to support their teams in their failures. Empathy should be demonstrated top-down and bottom-up. Participating in meetings, turning on cameras, and really being present are crucially important to foster empathy and better communication. Assume a good intent, “You know they mean well,” even in the most tense scenarios. When you realize someone is having a bad day, try to adjust and to help who is in need at that particular moment (if it is an ongoing attitude, that is simply abuse). Hey friends, I'm so excited to welcome my dear friend Christy Wright to the show today! In this episode, we're answering the questions most of us find ourselves asking frequently: Where did all of my time go? And how do I get it back?!Christy and I dive into having a balanced life, how social media affects mothers, and examine if we can truly have a balanced life in an out-of-balance world. In our conversation, we talk about Christy's new book “Take Back Your Time, ” and she shares practical tips on how we can redefine what life balance is to take back our time. As you'll hear from her in the episode, real balance is about doing the right things at the right time. Listen in to hear: Christy's strong feelings on the phrase, “ It's the thought that counts!” How balance is not something that you need to do; instead, it is something that you become. What can cause the internal narrative of “you're failing” and how to stop it in its tracks. Christy share practical, super-tactical ways to embrace this type of balance in our lives. Favorite quotes: 1. Life balance comes when you do the right thing at the right time. When you do that you will feel that sense of balance you've been looking for. 2. You can be super productive and still not feel happy. 3. Even a good thing at the wrong time is a wrong thing. 4. Priorities are not a set it and forget it thing. You can change your plan, you can change your mind, you can change your priorities and you should because what matters to you is determined by the season that you're in. In this episode I answer this question: 1. How do you recalibrate when you've gotten off course with your goals? (40:25) Great things we discussed: 1. Christy Wright 2. Phil and Diane Comer are the parents of John Mark Comer, author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. Together, they wrote Raising Passionate Jesus Followers, in which they share the practical parenting wisdom they have gained from raising four children, all of whom are looking for God and making a difference in the world. They have been married for 41 years and have been in ministry together for all of it.Today, Phil and Diane join me to talk about their book and share their best parenting lessons. They talk about the importance of beginning intentional parenting as early as possible and take me through the different stages of parenting a child as he or she grows. We discuss the importance of family in the kingdom of God. They note the importance of discipline and communication, and they make a distinction between discipline and punishment. They stress the importance of parenting your children as God parents us.“You want to raise your kids to know that following Jesus doesn't mean everything is gonna go perfectly...but He will be with you in the good times and in the hard times, in the mountains and in the valleys, and it's in the valleys that He really defines us and molds us and makes us more like Him.” - Phil Comer“We, as parents, are blessed in order to be a blessing.”- Diane ComerKey Takeaways this week on the L3 Leadership Podcast:● Parenting is not an exact science● Children don't grow out of anything but their clothes● The difference between discipline and punishment● The Box as a way of understanding how God parents us● The theology of suffering● Your children are your legacyMentioned Resources:● Henne Jewelers● Beratung Advisors● Raising Passionate Jesus Followers: The Power of Intentional Parenting by Phil and Diane Comer● The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World by John Mark Comer● He Speaks in the Silence: Finding Intimacy with God by Learning to Listen by Diane ComerWelcome to the L3 Leadership Podcast!
