Calling all creatives and oddballs - yep, I’m talking to you. Ever felt like you lost your inspiration? Or have you ever been stuck in an indefinite “creative block”? Well, I’m here to take a giant burden off your shoulders by debunking all the depressing myths surrounding creativity. You’ll learn how to listen to it, harness it on command, and use it anywhere and everywhere. You'll see how creativity is the heartbeat in your business, your job, your side-hustle, your hobby, and all the in-betweens. Let's start this Odd Reform. Oh, and by the way, I’m your host, Kate.
For the final episode of The Odd Reform Podcast we're covering the concepts that we saw pop up over and over throughout most of the episodes. Addi and I first discuss the three negative themes that we need to avoid (auto-piloting, influence and pendulum swinging) and then jump into the the positive themes that we'd like o grow in (intentionally, community, discernment, and balance). We've had an absolute blast chatting about all these topics and we hope you've enjoyed them and gleamed from them as well. The podcast may be coming to an end but Odd Reform is very much alive. To stay in touch, follow us on Instagram @oddreform. Keep on thinking odd.
So if you haven't heard by now, it has been three years since the start of the Odd Reform Podcast and after a ton of consideration and reflection, it's bittersweet to announce the podcast will be coming to an end. I've learned and grown so much, I hope you have too. But I'm also very excited for this new chapter. Odd reform is still very much alive and you can follow along and see what we're up to on instagram @oddreform. We still have a topic for today (our second to last episode), which is all about absolute truth versus “your truth” and how “your truth” is extremely problematic. Keep listening to hear Olivia and I break it down.
Today's topic is one that has weaseled its way into every area of our lives and it can take over if we're not careful. It's the enticement of convenience. It's so tempting and we all struggle with it even if we're not aware. It makes life so easy, so much more efficient — but at what cost? That's what Addi and I will be discussing today. We'll look at tons of examples of where we can find it (a.k.a. pretty much everywhere) and it can be really overwhelming. Hence why we have spirals of thoughts because it's embedded into every single thing we do. So prepare your self as we take a closer look.
Following your heart sounds like the sweetest cutest thing, but the heart is actually one of the most unreliable intuitions we have. It's today's version of living your truth and really it's the pretty way of letting your emotions dictate your actions. In today's episode Addi and I will break down even further what following your heart means, what can make it dangerous, what we should be doing instead and obviously not without a few tangents thrown in there.
Are you a fan of New Year's resolutions? If your answer is “yes", “no" or “I don't care”, then this episode is for you. Olivia and I go into this episode blind meaning neither of us knew how the other felt about the topic until we started recording! We have a blast chatting about what we don't like about New Year's resolutions, why one of us loves them, why people fail at them and some tips on how people can actually have success with them. SNEAK PEAK: we found out we have opposite opinions on the topic — take a listen to find out who loves them and who hates them!
It's officially our last podcast episode of the year (MERRY CHRISTMAS), so in light of that I wanted to chat about neutrals. And more specially why there's no such thing as a neutral especially starting with our thoughts. Everything is either good or bad. And the better we can identify the good and the bad the easier time we have identifying and controlling what influences us. A neutral is just another way of saying “an influence”, because thats exactly what a neutral will do if we're not careful. We classify neutralities as “harmless”, “no big deal” “comfortable” to justify it. But we're just digging ourselves a deeper hole. Addi and I chat about what this looks like in real life — from childhood, to parenting, to the media and tons more. Take a listen to hear it all.
Todays episode is a little different. There's no perfect solution or black and white formula. It's really more of a discussion on a very culturally prevalent value that none of us seem to question or even consider as an influence. We've normalized it so much that it permeates into the core of our identity. And that is this concept of "loving yourself". Where did it come from? Does it actually work? How does the concept tie in to your faith as a Christian? These are all questions Addi and I mull over in todays episode. Keep listening to hear more.
As humans we tend to be very black and white with how we judge people. The bad vs the good. And we tend to be very cut and dry as to what that looks like. Mean people are bad, nice people are good. But I think its actually much more complicated than that. The nuances of intention and interpretation have so much to do with it and we're gonna use some of that today as Addi and I discuss what we'll call the "helpful person” and how they tend to be one of the more misunderstood types of people. if you are the helpful person — We'll look at your strengths as well as what challenges you. OR you may be the person who KNOWS the helpful person and well see how you can make sure you're not taking advantage of them but instead finding ways to help them. whether you identify as the helpful person or the person who knows the helpful person this episode will definitely get you thinking — so keep listening to get the full scoop. Everyone wants to be unique and stand out, especially nowadays where individualism is a fundamental principle for most of us. While every human is special and does bring their own twist to the world, We've started to lose the luster of relating and understanding others. We have so much in common with the people around us and its actually good for us to be aware of that. It unifies us and humbles us. So today I'll be sharing the five signs to detect if we think we're more unique than we really are. Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM
Feminism has brought about so many necessarily and long awaited rights for women. But what has started as a positive movement has slowly morphed into the thing it was fighting against. yes we still want to make strides forward and we want women to be valued as equal to men. But NOT at the cost of being hypocrites with a double standard. We, as women, are striving for equality not dominance and control of power because that would just be a reverse loss. Today my friend Olivia and I dive in head first into how our culture has sadly stripped feminism of its integrity and why this new version can be so harmful.
Big personal update: On April 23 this year I finally had my baby - her name is Beverly Wilde. and I'm finally doing an episode on some of the crazy things I just did not see coming and some real good lessons I've been learning from it. From realizing birth was not the hardest part of having a kid, to being okay with feeling two seemingly opposing feelings at once, to loving a baby human a scary amount you didn't think was possible — and so much more that my friend Addi and I will fully unpack in today's episode of the odd reform podcast. I get to interview Jase Depperschmidt today (and also the fist boy on our podcast - he should feel very honored). He is an insane local entrepreneur who has found success in multiple of his companies he's started and he also has amazing discernment and insight into living well. We talk about how he got started, what it takes to be a real entrepreneur and how you don't need to be obsessed with or passionate about what you do in order to love what you. I know crazy right — you'll need to keep listening to figure get the whole scoop on that. @jasedepp @archetypedesigns mintmobiledetail.com Shop the calendar here. Primally Pure Code: ODDREFORM
Usually we divide people into two groups: adventurous or cautious. But in reality most of us are a mixture of both — it just depends on the scenario. Olivia and I break this down to the nitty gritty and look at the importance of being open to new things because learning to see where we enjoy risks (i.e. food, travel, conversation etc) and where we prefer safety and security is so helpful with our quest in growing as people. We'll give tons of examples to show you what both can look for different people in different circumstances. But as always there's pros and cons everything and we'll see exactly where the pendulum swings can bubble up. Calendar: https://oddreform.com/ https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM
Today I get to interview one of my good friends and mentors — Jess Penner. She is an all encompassing musician who specializes in licensing her music and has found success through all her hard work. She's had placements for H&M, Days Inn, Sharpie, Payless Shoes, Disneyland, BMW, JC Penny, T-Mobile — the list goes on of companies she's gotten to work with. Jess is seriously one of the most talented people I know with an incredible story (which you'll hear all about on todays episode) of how she got to where she is. She is full of wisdom and insight and gives really practical advice on what it actually takes to make it in the creative industry. And also fun fact: our podcast intro and outro song is actually from the album that her and I recorded together. This one right here:
The word nice and kind get interchanged all the time and it feels like people legit do not see a difference or cant articulate a difference which is absolutely terrifying to me since one is basically an insult. I am super passionate about the difference bc people can just assume that upfront, assertive people are “not nice” and write them off. Well it's true, a lot of times they aren't nice, but niceness, once you really uncover what it is, has virtually zero value to it. I have absolutely no desire to be nice and every desire to truly be kind and think of others. On today's episode addi and I divulge all of this. We define what nice really means and what kind really means and see how they surface in all different kinds of situations. We'll see how niceness is self-focused while kindness is others-focused. This is one of my favorite things to talk about as you'll see, so make sure you keep listening. Calendar: https://oddreform.com/ Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM
I have a big announcement for the podcast that addi and I will be discussing on todays episode. When you start something from scratch its hard to fully project what it will look like consistently over time, bc sometimes you just need to start it and do it, and let it play out to really be able to hone in on an explicit direction. And that's exactly what's happening with our podcast, I started it over two years ago primally as a resource for Odd Reformers to really learn more about creativity and all the concepts that intertwine with it. I don't see this next step as a change or switch but as a honing in on our direction that better services you the audience with even higher quality, more substantial content. I'm also really excited bc this update will also allow me to develop other areas of Odd Reform that I haven't been able tend to. And don't worry the podcast isn't going anywhere! But you'll def wanna keep listening to hear all the details.
I'm interviewing the Salt and Pepper Podcast and we're talking about how to work as a team and what pivotal moment they had with their podcast that made them really define their values and take a stand for their faith. With cancel culture at every corner, it can create this fear in most of us, to not voice the things we think or believe in. But Olivia and Lisa have other plans, keep listening to hear why. At the beginning of each year I like to do a goal setting episode, but today for the new year I instead want to go over the theme I want this year to have, which is... CONSISTENCY. It's more about becoming a certain way versus doing a certain thing. I'm gonna go over the 5 ways I plan to challenge myself to be more consistent. If you're like me with doing things consistently - you're gonna wanna take a listen. Calendar: https://oddreform.com/ Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM
The year is coming to an end and so what better time than now to have a recap of what we did this year and more importantly what we learned this year. Addi and I discuss the three main lessons I learned. And also what I want to do differently to be better for next year. I always think it's helpful to hear about the "what", "how" and "why" behind what people learn so I highly recommend to keep listening. When we get into any sort of busy season we can start to feel the pressure of all the things that need and our creativity begins to dwindle. It gets harder and harder to get those creative juices flowing when our plates are full and just overwhelmed. So today's episode is all about how can learn to be creative through these seasons, I break it out into 5 practical tips so take a listen to find out what they are. I have some big news — I'm having a kid! It's cool, exciting, super weird, terrifying. We see the two extremes - women who grow up wanting to be a mom OR women who don't want to kids at all. But there's a group of us in the middle who maybe want kids but who aren't really "kid people". My friend Olivia and I both fall in this middle category and discuss this even though neither of us have kids — yet, haha! When it comes to being inspired, some look to outside sources while others look within. It's not a matter of who's right or wrong but how different people take different paths to get to the same solution. Today my friend Olivia and I talk about the two different ways that people get inspired and the pros and cons that come with each way. Bonus discussion: we chat about how there the overvalue of appearance! Calendar: https://oddreform.com/ Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM
Right before the holiday season, a lot of us lose steam. We start to realize the year is ending and we wonder if we've done enough throughout the year to hit our goals. And those sorts of thoughts can start to lead us down a destructive spiral. Today we'll talk about the four ways to move past feeling like a failure. It's sweet and short because I want you to have easy access to getting out of this weird funk. Calendar: https://oddreform.com/ Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM
There's two types of people in the world. The people who deal with things immediately and those that put things off to the last minute. The interesting part is both have equal amounts of strengths and weakness. We all gravitate more towards one (as it should be). The trick is understanding and appreciating what you bring to the table PLUS what the other sides does too. Addi and I discuss all the things. There's a lot of opinions surrounding copying, where's the line from inspired by to plagiarism. So I'm having my friend Olivia Corin back on to talk about all things copying. From smaller issues like wardrobe copycats all the way to more complex issues like copying ideas or work. We're really getting behind the reason it can be a problem. AND addressing that there actually IS a time to copy. Calendar: https://oddreform.com/ Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM
We've talked a lot about how important confidence is but talking about how destructive insecurity is is just as important. I'll give you the four ways insecurity can surface and kill creativity. We all deal with insecurity on some degree, the key is being willing to work on it, move through it and past it. But if we let insecurity get the best of us, it will slowly but surely suffocate our creative spark. Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM Calendar: https://oddreform.com/
My friend Olivia Corin and I are talking all about feminism. Some of our thoughts and opinions are a little different than what the mainstream preaches and I think it's good to hear different perspectives. This can be a really touchy polarizing subject but we gotta talk about it. We'll talk about the pros and cons, our personal encounters with equality, and a lot more. So buckle up, because it's about to get wild. Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM Calendar: https://oddreform.com/
Yesterday was a huge day for Odd Reform, we released our very first product - the 2022 Art Calendar. And so today I wanted to walk you through why this calendar is absolutely the coolest thing from the colors we chose, to the artists we worked with, to the subjects depicted in it, to how it really ties in to the mission behind who we are as a company. There was so much thought, intention, energy and talent put into this by so many people, which I think totally merits the spotlight for a bit. The calendar The artist blog
Whether you're an established business, making a career pivot or just thinking of possibly starting, you absolutely NEED an email list. But holy crap, I couldn't of been more wrong. Art Calendar Flodesk code: ODDREFORM

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that quite a bit of people would not classify a lawyer or an engineer as creative. Although we won't be talking much about law or engineering today, I will be disproving the concept of that. And showing you that creativity is found in far more places than the arts. In fact, *plot twist*, sometimes artsy people aren't even creative at all. I know its crazy. But true. Primally Pure code: ODDREFORM - https://bit.ly/2TSFsPM Calendar: https://oddreform.com/

No matter what you do or who you are, receiving constructive criticism is super hard to take. And even more, most people also don't know how to GIVE it. Trying new things can be THE WORST - a new project, a new skillset or just figuring something out that seems impossible. That sort of stuff often leaves us at a dead-end, paralyzed and feeling incapable which freaking sucks. But there is a cool part. And that is: it doesn't have to suck. I actually know you CAN do that thing you're thinking of right now. The biggest obstacle is your mindset and that’s exactly what were addressing in today's episode. I'm gonna give you the 6 steps to go from "I can't" to "I can". Let's do this thing. Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
Too many of us see someone who’s good at something and immediately dismiss and/or downplay that person’s strength. However, when we step back and look at what long-term successful people have in common, they tend to all be CURIOUS about people who are better than them - not intimidated. Today Addi and I are gonna tackle what perspectives are harmful and why. And most importantly, what to do instead. Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
If you’ve been in the creative or entrepreneurial space for any bit of time you know failure comes with the job. We know we shouldn’t fear failure, and that it’s an opportunity to learn, try again and/or pivot. But no one talks about what to do right after failing but before trying again. That interim where feels you feel like absolute crap. Well, we're talking about it and the advice is 100% practical and EASY. What exactly is self-care? We hear about it constantly and although it sounds great - do we really know how to define it? And if we’re not careful - self-care can get so oversimplified, that it becomes destructive. But it's not all doom and gloom, Addi and I discuss how like everything - there are pros and cons. Understanding the true intention is so important so we can really use it to it's full advantage. Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
Every person has experienced the creative cycle. I'll explain. Have you felt inspired? Questioned something? Tried something new? Have you failed? Felt doubt? Practiced something? Have you succeeded? Felt excitement? Exhaustion? Complacency? What's crazy is every person's answer is YES. So my last question is this: if we ALL have inevitable felt those feelings before, why do we avoid them and treat them as taboo? Well, I’m going to answer that and give you my own example of experiencing ALL of these!
People sometimes treat us not the exact way we want to be treated, whether it’s bc their personality rubs us the wrong way, or they’re in a bad mood, or maybe they're frustrated and flat out rude. We then have a choice, stoop to their level and mirror how they treat us. Or set the tone and respond in kindness in spite of how they treat us. Today’s episode is all about this, Addi and I are discuss what exactly mirroring is, the different types of mirroring, why we do it, and tips on how to prevent doing it. Confidently promoting yourself or your work can be terrifying. Heck, just being confident can be terrifying. But it's essential to not just your brand, but also your mental health and who you are as a person. Confidence has been distilled down to “self-love” and although that’s a great catchphrase, self-love and/or confidence is not the goal. It's a result. You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out why. Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
Goal planning is a huge part of turning your creativity from a feeling into a result. It’s absolutely necessary if you don’t want to just leave things to chance. That sort of gamble is not one worth taking. Today, Addi and I discuss goal-setting in a way that's a little different. We parallel it to something that may surprise you - better yet, convince you that you CAN make your goals, dreams, + visions a reality! Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
Creative blocks are not the world’s way of pranking you. They don’t exist to crush your self-esteem and waste your time. Creative blocks are a signal letting us know we need something - wether that’s a break, a clearer direction, refined inspiration, or a combination. You definitely want to hit play so you can learn to move past - better yet PREVENT “creative blocks”. Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
Relying on luck and chance to propel you to success is probably the biggest mistake entrepreneurs can make. Yet its a lie that a lot believe. We see the few exceptions that have made it by chance and assume that’s the default. Well that seems too stressful to me. I’d rather believe that with a good enough idea, enough diligence, planning and intuition we can make dreams a reality. And that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about on todays episode of the odd reform podcast. Addi and I chat about the good, the bad and some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years that help me better plan for the future. PLUS I'll let you in on an upcoming shift for the Odd Reform Podcast that benefits both you and me! Freebie: http://bit.ly/oddreformfreebie Flodesk: https://flodesk.com/c/oddreform
One of the biggest lessons I learned recently is taking the time to reflect on the past. There is something powerful about taking time to really soak in your accomplishments, learn from the mistakes and use that to your advantage for next year. So today Addi and I are looking back at 2020 and seeing where we went wrong, where we went right and we'll see what I did differently this year that made a HUGE difference. One of the things that comes with being human is we face challenges, discomfort, and sometimes absolutely unfair circumstances. The world tells us to play the victim which honestly makes sense. But today, Kassie Johnson, walks us through how all the odds were against her, and why she CHOSE to be a victor not a victim. IF you think about the people who inspire you, who you aspire to be, they’re not victims OF their situation - they’re victors over their situation. Kassie let’s us in on her mind set, how she got there, and her incredible journey of becoming an amazingly talented musician, singer, writer and producer.
