According to the Mayo Clinic, cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect movement and muscle tone or posture. It's caused by damage that occurs to the immature brain as it develops, most often before birth.Strength training is absolutely necessary to limit atrophy from not moving limbs or a sedentary lifestyle in general. Cerebral palsy can limit one's access to physical activities which can lead to all kinds of secondary diseases (obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension). After being told he wouldn't be able to walk by doctors, Paul's mother got him into physical therapy and fitness overall which helped him prove his doctors wrong. Every form of fitness has some barrier to entry. Yoga is no exception. You may think yoga is only for flexible people, or your joints can't handle it, or you're to strong for yoga. Any number of reasons not to do yoga will come out. I can say from first hand experience I was the one that thought yoga was a joke the first time I tried it. According to cancer.gov, in 2020, an estimated 1,806,590 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States.This stat is alarming and it means that you are or know someone that is impacted by cancer. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is a rare disorder in the United States. Usually seeing under 200,000 cases per year. Which makes this conversation even more important for the people that do have it. EDS affects the connective tissues in one's body. Meaning it could impact skin, joints, and organs. Proper exercise and physical therapy can help maintain the integrity of the joints. Going from recreation gym, to military, to training in a hospital. Pretty interesting evolution in fitness education, and that is exactly what my guest Tyler Morrison did. Tyler is an exercise physiologist with the University of Texas Medical Branch, collaborating with physical therapists and athletic trainers daily for late stage rehab progressions, rehabbing various orthopedic conditions, and return to sport protocols.
