Control of information is a vital weapon of the ruling class in its war on the people. Critical media literacy is more important now than it has ever been. For the past year we've been drowning in imbalanced coverage of the war on Gaza. (How many times did mainstream news outlets use the word ‘genocide'?) It's just one example – and it's an outrage. Steve's guest is Shealeigh Voitl, Project Censored's digital and print editor. They discuss the media's role in shaping public perception and delve into the systemic disinformation propagated by corporate and academic institutions. While sensational inconsequential stories dominate the headlines, the voices and experiences of the working class and the marginalized are silenced. Steve and Shealeigh look at the power dynamics inherent in media ownership, reinforcing inequality and promoting working class subjugation. Passive news consumption is the equivalent of unilateral disarmament. Shealeigh Voitl is the digital and print editor at Project Censored. She first began her research with the Project at North Central College alongside Steve Macek, co-authoring the Déjá Vu News chapter in the State of the Free Press 2022 and 2023 yearbooks, and the Top 25 chapter in SFP 2023. In addition to her editorial contributions to the yearbook series and work with the Campus Affiliates Program, Shealeigh helped develop the State of the Free Press 2024 teaching guide and the Project's “Critical Media Literacy in Action” social media series. Her writing has also been featured in Truthout, The Progressive, and Ms. Magazine.

Donald Trump is set to be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on 20th January at 12 p.m. E.S.T. While the president traditionally assumes his powers outdoors in front of the Capitol building, with a large crowd of spectators witnessing the ceremony, Trump has moved the event inside the Capitol Rotunda amid forecasts of extreme cold. In one of his first acts as president, Trump is expected to participate in a traditional signing of a number of executive orders to kick off the beginning of his administration. However, it is not clear what executive orders will be first up just yet. On this episode of Morning Shot, Bryan DeAngelis, Partner & Head of Washington Office at Penta Group and Suzanne Chod, Professor of Political Science at North Central College share their analysis on what Trump’s first 100 days could look like. This week, we swing into the new year (2025), with Mickey engaging media scholar Nolan Higdon. They discuss the incoming administration, Trump 2.0, the failures of the punditocracy, and what might mean for press freedom in his second term; social media and an end to so-called fact-checking; and why we will continue to need a truly independent press to keep us informed moving forward. Later in the program, media scholar Steve Macek joins the conversation, and it's Deja Vu all over again as they revisit previously censored news stories around significant current events (including in Gaza) and how the ongoing lack of establishment media coverage around key issues contributes to low information voters and allows myriad injustices to persist at home and around the globe. Nolan Higdon is a lecturer in Education at the University of California Santa Cruz campus, a prolific author on media issues, and a frequent guest on the Project Censored Show. His books include The Anatomy of Fake News; he also writes on Substack. Steve Macek teaches communications and media studies at North Central College in Illinois. He's also the co-coordinator of Project Censored's Campus Affiliates Program. The post Pressing Issues for 2025: Trump 2.0, Media Failures, and the Fight for Press Freedom appeared first on KPFA.

Produced by KSQD 90.7, 89.5 & 89.7FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, December 15, 2024 at 5:00pm (PT) “First they came for the journalists. We don't know what happened after that.” – Maria Ressa Every year, Project Censored highlights the vital stories that corporate media underreported, exposes rampant news abuse, and tracks emerging threats against the press from financial and political powers “State of the Free press 2025” comes at a time when trust in the media is at an all-time low. A 2024 Pew Research Poll found that a remarkable 73 percent of adult Americans believe a free press is either extremely or very important to the well-being of society—though only a third of those polled believe that US media are completely free to report news. Half of those surveyed believe that US news organizations are influenced a great deal by corporate/financial or government/political interests. Reporters Without Borders gave the US a score of 66.59 out of a possible 100 points in their 2024 World Press Freedom Index—a drop of nearly five points from 2023. Tragically, 2024 stands out as the year that the corporate media failed to adequately cover Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people and the threat it poses to the whole world. With their gaze trained elsewhere, the powerful got a pass from the very institution that should hold them to account. In 2023 Reporters Without Borders labeled US press freedom “satisfactory;” in 2024, they called it “problematic.” Interview Guest: SHEALEIGH VOITL is the digital and print editor at Project Censored. She first began her research with the Project at North Central College alongside Steve Macek, co-authoring the Déjá Vu News chapter in the State of the Free Press 2022 and 2023 yearbooks, and the Top 25 chapter in SFP 2023.

It's election day in the United States. Americans across the country are heading to the polls to vote for their next President. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each need at least 270 electoral votes to win. In this high-stakes election, the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are expected to be pivotal to the path to victory. On this special edition of Morning Shot focusing on the US Presidential Election, Trisha Craig, Executive Director at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies and Suzanne Chod, Professor of Political Science at the North Central College share their insights. Imposter syndrome and a lack of confidence in navigating college can happen to anybody, but it can especially be a problem for students who are the first in their families to attend college. These feelings can lead to poor academic performance and a lack of engagement with the campus community, making the path to graduation more challenging. Our guest is Julie Carballo, Assistant Dean of Students for First-Generation and Military-Affiliated Initiatives at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, which has nearly 40% first-generation students. We'll talk about how their Cardinal First program provides essential support from enrollment through graduation, how the campus community values and supports first-generation students, and tips on what other institutions can learn from the Cardinal First program. To stay up-to-date, follow them on Instagram @firstgencardinals.
With less than a month to go in the race to the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are locked in a neck-to-neck final sprint. Just recently, we witnessed an even-tempered and policy-focused vice-presidential debate - with few political body blows between their running mates, Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz. With polling averages showing all seven battleground states nearly tied, what else must the candidates do to capture the much-needed vote share to emerge victorious? On this episode of Morning Shot, Suzanne Chod, Professor of Political Science at North Central College shares her insights. This week on CounterSpin: One of many things wrong with corporate news media is the way they hammer home the idea that the current system is the only system. If you don't see yourself and your interests reflected in either of the two dominant parties, the problem is you. On the other hand, independent media gives us new questions to ask. For example, How do we acknowledge the fact that many people's opinions are shaped by messages that are created and paid for by folks who work hard to hide their identity and their interests? If we're in an open debate about what's best for all of us, why can't we see who pays you? We'll talk about “dark money” with Steve Macek. He's professor and chair of communication and media studies at North Central College in Illinois. His recent piece “Dark Money Uncovered” appeared on TheProgressive.org. Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look back at recent press coverage of Phil Donahue. The post Steve Macek on Dark Money appeared first on KPFA.
In the first segment, we learn about the phenomenon of “dark money”: political campaign contributions designed to be difficult or impossible for the public to know about or trace. Mickey talks with media scholar Steve Macek about GOP plans for legislation to make it even easier to keep these contributions secret, as well as the failure of corporate media to energetically report on dark money and the wider issues of what big donors get for their dollars. Then, Project Censored's curriculum development coordinator Mischa Geracoulis guest co-hosts the show to address the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, the conservative wish list for a second Trump term. Mischa speaks with Lisa Graves, who specifically addresses how education and the media landscape would be changed if Project 2025 is actually implemented. GUESTS Steve Macek is a professor of communications and media studies at North Central College in Illinois. He's also the co-coordinator, with Andy Lee Roth, of Project Censored's Campus Affiliates Program. Steve was also one of the editors of the recent book Censorship, Digital Media, and the Global Crackdown on Freedom of Expression (Peter Lang, 2024). Lisa Graves is the founder and executive director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group. She has previous experience at the Justice Department and in the federal court system. More analysis of Project 2025 can be found at project2025admin.com. In the last few years, bilingual social media content has emerged as a tool used to increase diversity and rights for minority groups. On Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and other social platforms, organizations such as Tide Pods by Unilever have released bilingual images that support diverse communities. More recently, nonprofits have started to use bilingual social media content as a marketing tool and support communities by creating awareness and encouraging the involvement of people to take positive action. This is important because it gives back to communities that have been left out by mainstream culture for many years. My guest today is Maria Ochoa, Founder and CEO at Emprender Creative, an agency helping organizations realize their vision by providing bilingual marketing services with content that is culturally targeted, impactful, and relevant to the Latinx community. Project Censored has released “Censored 2024,” the latest in the Project's series of annual volumes detailing the shortcomings of media giants and the accomplishments of independent media. The best-known feature of each year's book is the “Top 25” list of most significant stories overlooked or underreported by the corporate media. On this week's radio show, Mickey is joined by two contributors to the annual volumes; they discuss what kinds of stories are most-likely to be censored by corporate media and why. We also hear an alert about the ever-increasing number of conservative attempts to ban or restrict disfavored books at school and public libraries. Andy Lee Roth is Associate Director of Project Censored, coordinator of its Campus Affiliates Program, and a widely-published media analyst. Media scholar Steve Macek teaches at North Central College in suburban Chicago, and has contributed to multiple Project Censored yearbooks. The post Censored 2024 appeared first on KPFA.

Blades dominated her initial matches but lost 9-2 in the finals against UWW's Reetika in the 76 kg category. Jimenez, competing in the 50 kg category, withdrew from her finals match due to injury but still secured a silver medal. Amit Elor, another U.S. wrestler, advanced to the finals in the 72 kg category, pinning her first two opponents. She will face Jyoti Berwal in the finals, aiming for another U23 championship. Meanwhile, Macey Kilty will compete for a bronze medal in the 65 kg category after a strong start but a narrow 5-4 loss in the semifinals against Irina Ringaci. Xochitl Mota-Pettis is also in the hunt for a bronze medal in the 57 kg category, thanks to her first-round opponent advancing to the finals. The U.S. Greco-Roman team will begin their competition on Friday, featuring wrestlers like Phillip Moomey and Robert Perez III.Carter Starocci has announced his return to Penn State for the 2023-24 wrestling season, aiming to become the Nittany Lions' first four-time NCAA champion. Starocci, who recently won his third NCAA title at 174 pounds, also hinted at a potential Olympic run in the 2024 Summer Games. He has the nation's longest active winning streak with 52 straight bouts and is Penn State's sixth three-time champion. The University of Oklahoma announced that its wrestling program will remain in the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member, even as the university transitions to the Southeastern Conference in 2024. The decision followed a vote by the Big 12's governance group, which includes university presidents and athletic directors. Oklahoma's wrestling program has a storied history, with seven national championships and 24 conference titles, including three in the Big 12 era. Starting July 1, 2024, the Big 12 wrestling membership will feature legacy programs like Iowa State and Oklahoma State, as well as affiliate programs such as Air Force and Missouri. Arizona State will also join as a newcomer in 2024. Iowa wrestling is gearing up for its season debut on November 4 against California Baptist, amid a turbulent offseason and pending NCAA decisions on sports-wagering penalties. Hawkeye coach Tom Brands praised the NCAA for its deliberative approach and emphasized that the athletes facing suspensions have been accountable. The vote on sports-wagering penalties is set for November 8, and Brands is hopeful for a decision that "fits the crime." Abe Assad and Nelson Brands are currently facing NCAA suspensions related to sports gambling and are likely to miss the season's first dual. Both athletes have criticized the NCAA and are awaiting the Division I Council's vote. While other Iowa wrestlers are also believed to be facing suspensions, Assad and Nelson Brands are the only ones to have spoken publicly about the issue. The National Wrestling Coaches Association has released its NCAA Women's Wrestling Preseason Coaches' Poll, with defending national champion North Central College leading the pack. North Central tops the preseason rankings for the second consecutive year, boasting 128 points and 13 ranked individuals, including seven who are ranked No. 1. McKendree is in third place with 60 points and nine ranked wrestlers, while Colorado Mesa is fourth with 51 points and eight ranked individuals. Sacred Heart and Gannon round out the top six, with 29 and undisclosed points respectively, each having four ranked individuals. "The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life." Jane Addams, Twenty Years at Hull House (1910) In the first of our two episodes on the life of Jane Addams, we learn about her formative years in a small farming village outside of Chicago, her education, and her relationship with her progressive Republican father, from whom she developed some guiding principles for her life, namely the ideas of Christian stewardship and community engagement. We also learn about her first visits to Europe, where she began to develop her conviction that human beings are not helpless and subject to the unfathomable forces of history, but that we have agency and can change the world in positive ways. Lastly, we explore the origins of her belief in mediation and dialogue, the idea that we can never solve the problems facing society without understanding one another and speaking to one another. All of these ideas coalesced with the founding of the first settlement house in Chicago by Addams in 1889, Hull House, a place where immigrants and Americans, rich and poor, black and white, young and old, men and women could come together in order to address the problems facing the fastest-growing city on the planet. Our two expert guests are Rima Lunin Schultz and Ann Durkin Keating. Rima is a Jane Addams scholar. She co-edited "Women Building Chicago: A Biographical Dictionary” and most recently co-authored "Eleanor Smith's Hull-House Songs: Music of Protest and Hope in Jane Addams Chicago". Ann is professor of history at North Central College in Naperville, IL, and the co-editor of the "Encyclopedia of Chicago".
