Notably, four of these Blue Zones are located near oceans, making them easily accessible by sea travel.    Ocean proximity: Blue Zones like Costa Rica and California are situated not too far from coastlines, making them ideal destinations for those interested in combining a healthy lifestyle exploration with beach vacations.  Mediterranean Sea: The regions of Sardinia (Italy) and Ikaria (Greece) are located in the Mediterranean Sea, which can be easily accessed by cruise ships or ferries.  Cultural immersion: Visiting a Blue Zone allows travelers to experience the local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle, which are often linked to longevity.    My friend Kirsty mentioned this in January, so I've created a list of things to do for each. För här blir en tredjedel över 90 år.Tio år äldre än genomsnittetGenomsnittsåldern för en naturlig död på Ikaria är nästan tio år högre än genomsnittet för Grekland och övriga världen.Både forskning och de äldre hänvisar till kosten, den fysiska aktiviteten, den sociala gemenskapen, frånvaron av stress, god sömn och att inte röka.Långt liv även i SverigeI Sverige har Karin Modig, docent i epidemiologi vid Karolinska institutet, kunnat mäta i blodet, med så kallade biomarkörer, vad som ger svenskar ett ovanligt långt liv.Forskarna följde en grupp på 45 000 svenskar födda mellan 1893 och 1920. Redan när en person var 65 år kunde forskarna se skillnader.– Skillnaderna var inte jättestora. Blå zoner kallas det där människor blir ovanligt gamla. En sådan zon finns på ön Ikaria i Grekland. Även hemma i Sverige har forskare hittat blåa zoner och kunnat mäta i blodet vad som ger ett långt liv. Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radio Play. För här blir en tredjedel över 90 år.Tio år äldre än genomsnittetGenomsnittsåldern för en naturlig död på Ikaria är nästan tio år högre än genomsnittet för Grekland och övriga världen.Både forskning och de äldre hänvisar till kosten, den fysiska aktiviteten, den sociala gemenskapen, frånvaron av stress, god sömn och att inte röka.Långt liv även i SverigeI Sverige har Karin Modig, docent i epidemiologi vid Karolinska institutet, kunnat mäta i blodet, med så kallade biomarkörer, vad som ger svenskar ett ovanligt långt liv.Forskarna följde en grupp på 45 000 svenskar födda mellan 1893 och 1920. Redan när en person var 65 år kunde forskarna se skillnader.– Skillnaderna var inte jättestora. In this episode, Diane Kochilas, a New York City native whose family is from Ikaria, and who now lives there much of the year, explains the essence of the Ikarian way, and how to give traditional recipes a contemporary twist so they are do-able wherever you live. Diane has been at the forefront of bringing healthy, delicious Greek and Mediterranean cuisine to a wide international audience for more than 25 years. Las 5 zonas, muy repartidas por todo el mundo, tienen algo en común: son las llamadas 'zonas azules' del planeta. ¿Qué es esto de la zona azul? Pues se denomina así a los lugares donde se encuentran los habitantes más longevos, dónde hay más centenarios de todo el mundo. Hay una calidad de vida muy buena, las enfermedades crónicas prácticamente no existen y sus hábitos son totalmente saludables. Es algo que nos encantaría tener a todos los ciudadanos. Aunque hay que decir que mejor calidad de vida que en España hay en pocos lugares. De hecho, está previsto que en 2040, España sea el país más longevo del mundo. Pero dentro de España hay un fenómeno aún más sorprendente todavía: el de Galicia. Allí viven Laura y Esperanza. Tienen 102 y 107 años. Dicen que algún fallo de memoria tienen pero muchos firmaríamos ya estar así de estupendos a esa edad. Las dos son de la provincia de Orense, la que más centenarios tiene de España. Yet as with most trends around diet and health, there is so much unspoken about the nuances of what an Ikarian lifestyle and diet entails, and the cultural relationships that Ikarians have with their food and communities.   My guest today is Diane Kochilas, who is here to share her insights on these relationships with food through her new cookbook, The Ikaria Way. Diane has been at the forefront of bringing healthy, delicious Greek and Mediterranean cuisine to a wide international audience for over 25 years. Mason, and long time SuperFeast friends, Dan Sipple and Marcus Pearce join forces today for an insightful conversation around diet, lifestyle and longevity in the world's Blue Zones, and how the quality of life experienced by the individuals living in these areas is cultivated through joy, community, resilience and pace. The tread that weaves itself so gracefully throughout this conversation is one of unbridled self expression, of the value in allowing ourselves the freedom to include and relish in the aspects of our lived experience that we most enjoy, those feel like a balm not only to our bodies and hearts, but our souls as well. We're given insight on these musings as Marcus shares from his experiences spending time with the people of Ikaria, an island located on the coast of Greece in the Eastern Aegean Sea. Here the people live slow and in community, moments are savoured and enjoyed, alcohol is commonly consumed but rarely in excess, the same goes with meat. Things get done in the time it takes to do them and deadlines are not really a thing. The pace and the variants considered essential for life are vastly different to those that we are indoctrinated to esteem through the Westernised systems that the majority of us are engaged in, with motivation for "success" often derived from pursuits laced in capitalism. Listening to Marcus, Dan, and Mason discuss research on the factors that contribute to wellbeing and longevity in the Blue Zones worldwide, we can identify that it is not the frantic striving for shinier, more, better, higher, younger, that enables a human to flourish, it is in fact the very essence of the dutiful notion of chop wood, carry water, and not duty as in oppression, more so an agreement with what is, carried forward allowing space to enjoy the simple yet enriching facets of life that can only be accessed in the present with presence. We're introduced to the fact that when measuring the two separately, social connection has a more potent positive influence on health than diet, and those that have the most abundant sense of health are embracing both in equal measure. In the field of wellness individual's are so often told (and sold) that health is something that can only be accessed on the other side of "clean" living, and that longevity is derived from the perfect morning routine, nutrient intake, exercise and supplement regime. However in reality often the people that live the longest (and happiest) lives are those that are living in joyful communion with the things that they enjoy, vices included. We've all seen or heard the stories of the 100+ year old woman or man who attributes their longevity to their daily cigarette, coffee or can of coca cola. Centenarians are not exclusively green juice drinking yogini's or those who engage in a multifaceted wellness routine, Many are those that live simply, at natures pace, in community with purpose and without too much stress. Those who are culturally rich. How your life looks is not nearly as important as how your life feels, for you, regardless of the thoughts/opinions of an external audience. Question: Do you want to live to be 100? I feel like if you and I were chatting you might not give a resounding yes. We've seen a lot of disease and decay and death, and the idea of being here then might invoke a picture of sorrow and pain. But did you know there are people in their 90's and older still living rewarding and enjoyable lives? As you'll hear today, there are some great stories from Japan. But even here in Lindale, TX, there are several in their 90's still drawing joy out of active, service filled lives.Here's a better question: would you like to live a longer, happier, more productive life with your family that would have happened otherwise with just a few changes? Is there enough life and hope and growth in your life that you'd like to see it happen for the longest time possible? I think most of us would say yes. Well, it's possible. At the very least, a few personal and communal adjustments can make things better for longer. And I know we all want that. 2/3 of all people die from avoidable diseases. In other words, they went out sooner than their bodies were designed to go. Can we do something about that. We can.
