In this Season 14 review (episode 376) Andrea Samadi revisits highlights from her interview with Dr. John Ratey about the science of exercise, nutrition, and social connection for brain health and longevity. The episode explains Peter Attia's rule for foundational fitness, warns against sugar dependence and fat phobia, and presents the three biggest levers for healthy aging: exercise, diet, and social connection, plus practical tips to track and apply these habits. Takeaway: prioritize consistent movement, whole foods, and meaningful connection to boost mood, memory, and overall well-being. On today's episode #376, we review PART 2 of our 2021 interview with Dr. John Ratey and will learn: ✔ 3 Science-backed keys to brain health: Exercise, Nutrition and Connection ✔ What is Attia's Rule that allows us to dive deep into diet and nutrition? ✔ Practical Tips for improving consistent movement, our diet and social connection to boost overall well-being and brain health. Welcome back to SEASON 14 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, and seven years ago, launched this podcast with a question I had never truly asked myself before: (and that is) If productivity and results matter to us—and they do now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make them happen? Most of us were never taught how to apply neuroscience to improve productivity, results, or well-being. About a decade ago, I became fascinated by the mind-brain-results connection—and how science can be applied to our everyday lives. That's why I've made it my mission to bring you the world's top experts—so together, we can explore the intersection of science and social-emotional learning. We'll break down complex ideas and turn them into practical strategies we can use every day for predictable, science-backed results. Episode 376: PART 2 Featuring Dr. John Ratey For today's Episode 376, we continue with PART 2 of our review with Dr. John Ratey, covering the first health staple that we know is scientifically proven to boost our physical and mental health: exercise. We first met Dr. Ratey on Episode 116[i] (back in March 2021) on his book “The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain.” Dr. Ratey is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Ratey has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books in 17 languages. You'll notice that around the time of the pandemic, in 2020, our interviews took a turn towards health and wellness, and to stay on track, I created a framework of our Top 5 Health Staples on Episode 87[ii], which eventually evolved into our Top 6 Health Staples.

Send us a textIn this Fusion Hack episode, IFBB Pro Arin Cahee joins the team to share the real truth behind evolving as an athlete—from what she thought she knew about glute training to what it actually takes to build a balanced, championship physique.

She teaches Pilates, Yoga, Barre, Bootcamps as well as other community based classes. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The fastest way to raise your rates isn't a new logo or a shiny app. It's raising your standard. We sit down with Dr. David Skolnik, a physical therapist who teaches trainers, to unpack why the floor of fitness education is so low—and the exact skills that move you from “gig job” to trusted professional with a full roster. We start with movement assessment that actually maps to training. Instead of relying on narrow screens, we break down how to evaluate squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and locomotion in real time, under load, and with constraints that reveal what matters. Then we tackle pain without panic. Using a simple green–yellow–red framework, we show how to keep training productive during flare-ups, preserve capacity after surgery, and build client confidence by finding what can be trained today. The game-changer is collaboration with physical therapists. You'll hear how to speak the same language, what quality PT care looks like on the floor, and how to lead with reciprocity to spark a steady referral loop. We share examples of co-treating that maintain aerobic fitness, train the non-injured side, and support faster returns to full strength. Along the way, we draw a clear line between coaches who coach and influencers who post, and why hands-on practice still beats shortcuts when you want consistent results. If you're in Arizona, Dr. Skolnik outlines a new eight-week, in-person program in Mesa designed for working coaches who want to master assessment, pain navigation, and advanced programming. Prefer to start today? Audit your client assessments, define your pain rules, and book a coffee with a PT who loads patients on the floor. If this helped you see the path from $15 to $150 an hour, tap follow, share with a coach who needs it, and leave a quick review. I've worked out with personal trainers off and on for 20 years. I've had to attempt to partner with them professionally for 13 years. It's a challenge to find one willing to partner with my diet plan and one who understands chronic illness and how to train someone dealing with one. In this episode I'm sharing with you how I guide my clients when they want to hire a personal trainer. Here's what I look for personally and professionally for myself and for my clients. I've found some amazing personal trainers, including recently. I'm excited to have a local referral. I've also worked out with some bad ones. I'm quite picky and you should be too. She is passionate about helping young girls and women overcome an unhealthy relationship with food after spending years of her own life stuck in the mental prison that is disordered eating. Her education in the field began in her undergraduate years at Vanderbilt University, where she studied eating psychology and nutrition. During that time, she was also certified in the National Eating Disorder Awareness foundation's Body Project certification program to support women's relationships with their bodies. Her interests progressed into physique and performance evidence-based training and nutrition while maintaining a positive relationship with food and one's body (certifications through NASM). Her coaching centers on getting women out of the rut of under-fueling and over-training, out of the yo-yo cycle, and out of the mystery of how to fuel one's body (blocking out all the noise out there!) while building a positive outlook towards nutrition.Sophie also supports her clients who are interested in gut and hormone health. Her interest in this field started from her own experience with IBS, acne, and painful/irregular periods that she wanted to support holistically. Her approach to hormonal support and gut health focuses heavily on evidence-based lifestyle and nutrition approaches rather than excessive supplementation and overly restrictive methods. Some conditions Sophie works with include: IBS, IBD, bloating/indigestion, dysmenorrhea, PCOS, PMS, low thyroid, and chronic stress/fatigue. Please note, Sophie is not a medical professional and provides holistic support for these conditions within her scope of practice; please consult a medical professional for these conditions first.Outside of coaching, Sophie is an animal-lover and enjoys spending her free time riding her horse and hiking with her pup. #286: My doctor first recommended NAD to me as I was preparing my body for pregnancy. She explained how it could support ovarian and reproductive health, a topic that's especially important for women with PCOS, where insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress accelerate cellular damage and aging. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Andrew Salzman, Harvard-trained physician, and Chief Medical Officer at Wonderfeel, to explore the science behind NAD and why it matters for women's health at every stage. We discuss: - What NAD is and why levels decline as we age - How NAD⁺ supports energy, hormone balance, and fertility with PCOS - The connection between NAD, PCOS, and metabolic health

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Down 21–7 in the fourth? That's how most trainers feel when goals are vague, leads are random, and revenue wobbles. We flip that script with a practical playbook: define KPIs, run 90-day sprints, test weekly like an athlete, and hold public accountability so momentum has nowhere to hide. Think sports strategy meets small-business execution—clear metrics, tactical pivots, and simple scripts you can use today. We walk through a SWIFT-style review cadence that turns reflection into action: strengths to double down on, weaknesses you block time to fix, and the improvements, implementations, and innovations that compound results. You'll hear how to build a full book without waiting on algorithms—client appreciation invites that spark referrals, storefront intros that plant local roots, and discovery calls that convert because the questions are better. We even dig into pricing with confidence: tie rate increases to skill upgrades, invite clients to sponsor your growth, and communicate the plan with candor and care. There's a reason great coaches obsess over numbers. We break down the KPIs that matter for trainers—leads per week, show-up and close rates, ARPC, content-to-call conversion—and show how to read them like a dugout watches pitch counts. You'll leave with a 90-day roadmap: daily story prompts with polls, a DM follow-up system, a weekly beta test, and a review cycle that makes iteration inevitable. Ready to stop “wanting more clients” and start winning the quarter? Tap play, build your plan, and tell us your first move. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a trainer who needs a push, and drop a review so more coaches can find it.Want to ask us a question? Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!TikTok @seanokstr83Instagram @sean.straub.313Facebook Sean StraubWhat happens when you trade a stable construction paycheck for the uncertainty of becoming a personal trainer in your 40s? Sean's journey will inspire anyone feeling trapped in their career. After years in construction, Sean found himself drained by his blue-collar job despite doing everything he was "supposed to" do – putting on boots each morning and providing for his family. A chance encounter with John Ratey's book "Spark" ignited something inside him, beginning a transformation that would completely reshape his life. The path wasn't straightforward. Sean candidly shares his frustrations with traditional fitness certification, describing moments of heart-pounding anxiety when confronted with textbooks filled with jargon he couldn't understand. But everything changed when he discovered a practical approach to training that focused on real-world skills rather than abstract concepts. This breakthrough gave him the confidence to approach gym owners and stand out in an industry where 90% of new trainers fail within their first year. Now earning more than his construction salary while experiencing unprecedented freedom and fulfillment, Sean finds his greatest rewards in his clients' victories – from the former hockey player who can finally fit into his college jacket again to the budget-conscious client proudly purchasing her first dumbbell. More importantly, his career change has given him precious mornings with his five-year-old son, moments he previously sacrificed to his demanding job.For anyone contemplating a career change, especially those in their 40s or 50s who think it might be too late, Sean offers powerful advice: "We're here one time on this beautiful earth. The fruits we produce in life aren't for us, they're for others. Give your gift to others." Ever wondered why it's so hard to get business leaders interested in team wellness? In this conversation with Alex Cartmill, operator of Vibrant Yoga, Cam and Otis explore the fascinating intersection of wellness and business leadership."If the leader doesn't have a personal issue, they're likely not going to recognize an issue in the team," Alex explains, revealing one of the biggest challenges in bringing yoga and wellness practices into corporate environments. From discussing how to "open the door" with skeptical executives to exploring what happens when team members discover their purpose (and sometimes leave), this episode offers rare insights into the human side of business wellness. The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Otis suggests "Hard Rock Yoga" as a potential way to break through to resistant clients—and Alex doesn't immediately dismiss the idea. There's a genuine exploration of how wellness practices need to meet people where they are, not where wellness professionals wish they would be.Whether you're a business leader curious about team wellness or a wellness professional trying to break into the corporate world, this episode offers practical wisdom about building bridges between these often-disconnected domains.More About Alex:Alex has been an entrepreneur his entire life and now runs a business as an operator for other growing organizations -- through both hands-on & advisory work. Alex is currently helping manage Vibrant Yoga, a corporate & private wellness company based out of Chicago. After a short stint as a Personal Trainer, Alex began managing a business development program and mentorship for health professionals, building a team of more than 10 and taking in over 6,000 students during his 4-year stint there. Since then, Alex has been managing businesses and projects for a variety of remote organizations, from General Manager of Personal Trainer certification body Fitness Mentors, to Director of Operations of marketing consultancy Forget The Funnel, to continuously growing and adapting his own business as an operator.
