Today, I am blessed to have here with me the Founder of The Energy Blueprint, Ari Whitten. He is an energy and fatigue specialist who focuses on taking an evidence-based approach to energy enhancement, a nutrition, exercise, and natural health expert, and a #1 best-selling author. He has been studying nutrition and holistic health for over two decades. He has a Bachelor of Science from San Diego State University in Kinesiology (specializing in fitness, nutrition, and health). He also has a background in exercise physiology and fitness and holds two advanced certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist. In addition, he recently completed the three years of coursework for his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, an education which rounds out all aspects – nutrition, fitness, and psychology – of his approach to optimal health. Ari is a tireless researcher who has obsessively devoted the last 20 years of his life to the pursuit of being on the cutting edge of the science of health and energy enhancement. For the last six years, he's been working with many of the top scientists and physicians on the planet to develop the most comprehensive program in the world on the science of overcoming fatigue and increasing energy — The Energy Blueprint. In this episode, Ari first speaks about his Epstein Barr Virus diagnosis and how that took him down a rabbit hole of energy optimization. One way to improve chronic fatigue is by growing more mitochondria; Ari explains how this is possible. Then, Ari dives into melatonin and tips for fixing a circadian rhythm disruption. Tune in as we chat about the importance of hormetic stressors, Eat For Energy, and Ari's products from The Energy Blueprint. [00:45] Ari Speaks About Epstein Barr Virus and His Obsession With Energy Optimization Ari has been studying health science his whole life. Unfortunately, Ari got very sick with Epstein Barr Virus and mononucleosis in his mid-twenties. He lost about thirty-five pounds in the span of a month; he couldn't eat because the back of his throat was so swollen. Ari was left with chronic fatigue; it shifted his entire life. So, Ari started to focus on the world of energy optimization; he became obsessed with energy science. Conventional medical doctors had no information to offer Ari. After doing research, Ari found that science actually does not support the idea that adrenal fatigue is a significant cause of chronic fatigue. Well, Ari realized that no one truly understands what is causing fatigue. [08:45] The Key To Overcoming Fatigue Is Growing More Mitochondria Finding ways to grow more mitochondria and strengthen your mitochondria is a massive key to the puzzle of overcoming fatigue. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. We are taught to think of mitochondria as these mindless energy generators. Something you may not know is the mitochondria have a dual role beyond energy production, which is just as important as their role in energy production. The mitochondria also help with energy regulation. Your energy levels are a function of the degree to which your mitochondria decide if you're safe or if you're under attack. [17:50] Hormetic Stressors Will Make Your Mitochondria Bigger and Stronger Hormetic stress is how a transient metabolic stressor works to stimulate beneficial adaptations that ultimately increase resilience and resistance in the face of a broad range of other stressors. Basically, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. By exposing yourself to moderate stressors within your body's capacity, you make your body more robust and more resistant. Hormetic stressors are vital for challenging our mitochondria and stimulating them in a way that makes them bigger and stronger. [27:30] Is Your Body Under Attack? Your Brain Will Create Sickness Behavior When cells are under attack, they shift all their resources to defense mode. Cells will go into defense mode to protect themselves. They also go into defense mode as an evolutionary adaptive mechanism to help the body's energy and resources be redirected towards defending against the threat. When we have lots of immune activation and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, the brain responds by also creating sickness behavior, which includes fatigue. When your brain creates sickness behavior, it protects you from over-expending energy and depleting resources. [42:40] The Importance of Melatonin: What You Need To Know You get 50 to 70 percent suppression of melatonin secretion by the brain in the evenings due to simply being in a typical home under standard indoor home lighting. Melatonin is a vital hormone for protecting your mitochondria and protecting your brain's neurons. If you're chronically suppressing melatonin at the cellular level, you will have chronic melatonin deficiency. Sadly, melatonin doesn't get the respect that it deserves. [1:05:15] Ari Is Hypersensitive To Melatonin Supplements - Are You? Ari is hypersensitive to melatonin if he takes it in supplement form. After polling his audience, about 25% of people are sensitive to melatonin. People who take melatonin for a significant time will sleep poorly after coming off of it. It will take people a few days for sleep to normalize without taking melatonin. AND MUCH MORE! Anyone who has spent more than a day as a fitness professional knows that many clients have goals related to improving body composition. Have it be for reasons of health, performance, or aesthetics, body composition improvement is a prominent reason clients come to fitness professionals. Given this is the case, it is incumbent upon fit pros to have a reliable method for measuring change in body composition over time with clients. We'll dive into the topic of body composition measurement in episode 95, with Dr. Josh Dexheimer, the VP of Product and Education for Styku, a company that works in the body composition technology sector. In this discussion with Dr. Dexheimer, we'll explore the various modalities of body composition methods on the market today, their pros and cons, and practical principles for fitness professionals to consider when implementing these modalities into their practice. This is far from an abstract scientific discussion based on theory alone. Rather, this is very much a practical guide fitness professionals can use to determine which body composition method might be right for their practice, and how to effectively use that method to monitor and improve client outcomes. If you work with clients looking to improve their body composition, this is a can't miss discussion for you. We've all heard mitochondria described as “the powerhouse of the cell”. But what we know now is that mitochondria have a second role beyond being energy generators, and are of central importance in human physiology. Today we're discussing everything you need to know about mitochondria, specifically how the story of energy and the story of aging are very much centered around the health of our mitochondria. Luckily, the loss of mitochondria is not a natural product of aging, and there are ways to support and rebuild our mitochondrial networks as we get older. I'm joined by Ari Whitten, M.S., the founder of The Energy Blueprint. We take a deep dive into how mitochondria work, including the second role they play as environmental sensors. We also discuss how to support and maintain your mitochondria, and the best supplements for optimizing your mitochondria. If you struggle with chronic fatigue, you'll want to tune in to learn how mitochondria is impacting your energy levels, and what you can do about it. Ari Whitten, M.S. is the best-selling author of The Ultimate Guide To Red Light Therapy, and Eat For Energy: How To Beat Fatigue, and Supercharge Your Mitochondria For All-Day Energy. He has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist, has completed extensive graduate training in Clinical Psychology, and holds a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine. Ari is a tireless researcher who has obsessively devoted the last 27 years of his life to the pursuit of being on the cutting edge of the science on health and human energy optimization. What we discuss: 00:02:46 - How to start with supporting your mitochondria 00:11:28 - How mitochondria can impact your energy levels 00:18:27 - Why losing mitochondria is not a natural product of aging 00:22:22 - Ways to maintain mitochondria 00:25:20 - Melatonin production 00:30:06 - Light exposure and melatonin production 00:41:33 - Supporting your mitochondria at the foundational level 00:47:57 - EMF sensitivity 00:56:04 - The blueprint to optimizing your mitochondria 01:02:49 - The most powerful supplements for optimizing your mitochondria Key Takeaways: All the same things that boost our mitochondrial capacity for energy production are also going to translate into increased longevity and resistance to disease. The loss of mitochondria is not a natural product of aging, but is the result of modern lifestyles. Challenging your mitochondria by living a more active lifestyle will help support and rebuild your mitochondrial networks as you get older. Mitochondria have a second role beyond their role as energy generators, and that is as environmental sensors. Not only are the mitochondria actually producing energy, they are making the decision on whether or not to produce that energy. Integrating Gait Training and Positional Breathing for Fitness and Therapy Pt 2FAKTR Podcast Episode 23Featuring: Chris Kelly, CSCS, PES, CESEPISODE SUMMARYToday, we kick off a new training titled "Integrating Gait training and Positional Breathing in to Fitness and Therapy. Breathing has become a very popular topic in recent years in both fitness and therapy. But how to you even begin to re-train a process that happens in our body constantly and without conscious thought?Beyond that, how do you convince your clients and patients that correcting dysfunctional breathing is a crucial first step to helping them achieve their fitness and performance goals? By doing this, we can ensure our client or patient can dynamically control the ribcage and pelvis to drive stress to the right areas, help them better manage gravity and improve weight shifting capabilities.About our Speaker:Chris Kelly is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist and Certified Exercise Specialist and owner of Fitness Rehab, a company that specializes in post rehabilitation fitness and movement training. Today, we talk with folks from the MovNat Level 3 Certification in Glorietta, NM, September 2021, about fitness, the broader idea of human movement, nature, culture, and being a good human animal. Joining us is Nate Smith, Nate Amado, Rock Hancock, Scott Southworth, and Mason Maas. Enjoy!Nate Smith: "Nate was raised in the mountains of front range CO. With the state land as his backyard his interests were shaped quickly by the landscape and culture of his mountain community. Today he serves as a Sacred hunting guide, Movnat L3 instructor, lifestyle coach, and works part time in the outdoor industry to fuel his passion for skiing, rock climbing, and hunting. "Rock Hancock: "Brian 'Rock' Hancock believes that exercise and physical activity should celebrate the body's capabilities. As a Level 2 MovNat Certified Trainer and a Certified Health Coach, Rock has over 12 years experience working with various fitness backgrounds. He has assisted a range of clients, from the United States Marine Corps to those in corporate settings. He practices what he teaches. A look into his home would prove that a 2x4 sits in the living room for balance practice. His favorite natural movement skills are lifting, carrying, and jumping. In his free time, he loves cooking for his wife and sons."Scott Southworth: "Scott is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, MovNat Level 2 Trainer (working on Level 3!), and CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. in his gym practice, he specializes in weight loss, strength training, bodyweight training, and back and joint pain. He believes that our bodies are meant to be extensions of ourselves. He comes from a background in wrestling and freerunning where he used his body to explore and define who he was as a person. Since then, he's gotten involved in obstacle course races, endurance challenges, rock climbing, and a host of other activities. His training focuses on preparing for what life might throw at us. Whether that's sprinting up stairs so we don't miss a flight, helping a family member move into their new place, or playing a pickup game of basketball, he believes in a useful type of fitness. He's been involved in fitness for thirteen years and professionally training others for over a decade. Everyday he makes it his goal to better himself and grow as a trainer just as he asks his clients to better themselves and move toward their goals every day."Nate Amado: "Nate grew up a fairly weak and skinny kid, and having asthma didn't help -- running out of breath trying to keep up with friends was discouraging. He didn't feel strong, good at sports, or capable enough to defend himself (never mind others). He only played on a sports team once growing up, basketball in 3rd grade, and only made the free throws. It wasn't until his senior year in high school when he intently started pursuing new physical & mental challenges, starting out with high school wrestling. It was great, he won his first match or two, and got his ass handed to me for the rest of them. He loved it, and only wished he had started sooner. Later, when he discovered MovNat from the video "The Workout the World Forgot", he realized, 'THIS IS IT!' He felt that it was everything in one, the most complete system. He knew, right then and there, that this is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He went on to receive the MovNat Level 2 & Combatives Certifications (Mar & Jul 2016), The Human Path Scout Certification (Oct 2017), the Level 3 MovNat Certification (Oct 2017), a Purple Belt in BJJ (Dec 2017), the Primal Health Coaching Certification (Apr 2018), the MovNat Aquatics Certification (Sept 2018, officially earning all 5 MovNat certs and becoming a MovNat Master Trainer), the Gracie Combatives Belt Certification (twice - Jan & Jul 2020), and am currently on the path to becoming a certified Gracie Jiu Jitsu Instructor (July 2021), and a MeatRx Animal-Based Nutrition Coach (June 2021)."Mason Maas: "Mason is currently studying for a Doctorate in Acupuncture, He has a Masters in Acupuncture and a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science. He is working on his MovNat Level 3 certification, but has earned his MovNat Level 2 Certification. He is also an NASM Master Trainer, a Corrective Exercise Specialist, and a Performance Enhancement Specialist."Contact Michael:1. Email: ccerppodcast@aol.com2. Website: http://www.goldams.com 3. Is it possible to have HPA axis abnormalities or low cortisol or low morning cortisol or dysregulated cortisol? Absolutely, that is a real thing but it is fundamentally wrong to claim that adrenal fatigue is the cause or the primary cause or even a common cause of fatigue. It's also fundamentally wrong to claim that adrenal fatigue, the chronic stress leading to low cortisol levels is a real thing - that is also incorrect. You can be exposed to chronic stressors like work or financial stress and even metabolic factors like smoking and over exercising for years or even decades and never get low cortisol levels." - Ari Whitten Get 15% off your CURED Nutrition order with the code WELLNESSFORCE ---> Get The Morning 21 System: A simple and powerful 21 minute system designed to give you more energy to let go of old weight and live life well. Listen To Episode 395 As Ari Whitten Uncovers: [1:30] Healing Energy Fatigue Ari Whitten The Energy Blueprint The Ultimate Guide To Red Light Therapy by Ari Whitten The Energy Blueprint Podcast Exploring the concept of energy fatigue and how to heal it. What led Ari to become an energy and fatigue specialist and his 'aha' wellness moment. Dr. Joseph Mercola Why he became interested in pursuing a career in natural healthcare rather than western medicine. What he disliked about medical school and why his health began to deteriorate after two years in the program. Why he feels that western medicine is flawed in many different ways with his background in natural health. The fact that many medical students receive basically zero education on nutrition, lifestyle, and root causes of chronic disease. Negative feedback he would receive when he would hint at or suggest educating and giving patients healthy food at the hospital. The high rate of ignorance we see in the western medicine world about the benefits of healthy exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle to heal and prevent illness. [15:30] The Chronic Sick Care In America How we can avoid being put on chronic sick care or leave the system as quickly as possible. Examples of absurd science from humans who think we can meddle with nature including experiments and technology funded by Bill Gates. The real issue of perception that exists in the world of science including agriculture and healthcare when humans think they are smarter than nature with our technology and chemicals. Why your goal should be to optimize your body's innate capacity for healing and self regeneration if you want to combat fatigue, be healthy, and live a long life. The hard decision he made to finally leave medical school and how that impacted his wellbeing for several years. Fears he had after leaving medical school such as disappointing his family, what if people thought he failed, and what if no one listens to him if he doesn't have the title. His experience becoming a trainer after leaving medical school and later on pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology but then decided he didn't want to be a therapist. [29:30] Lessons Ari Received From Plant Medicine How, in his unique experience, plant medicine drastically helped his mind with depression and a toxic relationship compared to the talk therapy he was also receiving. Why talk therapy can be extremely beneficial and not all psychological illness is conducive to being treated by psychedelics or plant medicine. His decision to leave studying clinical psychology because he didn't want to be placed in one box for his profession and not be able to practice nutrition if he wished. What lessons Ari received from psychedelics and plant medicine and how those experiences helped heal his depression and expand his consciousness. Dr. Joseph Mercola Joseph Campbell How Ari set aside society's pressure on his career and start following his bliss in teaching people about natural health. Experiences of resistance that he faced as he began to grow the Energy Blueprint community online. Why it takes incredible courage to share your truth and novel ideas out there with the rest of the world. 332 John Wineland Jordan Peterson [47:30] Creating More Energy At The Cellular Level Breaking down how we can build more energy and cultivate a body that is capable of producing more energy. Ari's own person fatigue experiences in his mid 20s with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and how that led him to explore what natural health has to offer for combating fatigue. Hans Selye (1907–1982): Founder of the stress theory Paul Chek His specific research on adrenal fatigue and what doctors know and don't know about adrenal fatigue. Why conventional medicine is really clueless on adrenal fatigue and how to properly treat it with their four methods: antidepressants, cognitive behavioral therapy, 30 minutes walking a day, and to use stimulants as needed. Exploring what Addison's Disease is and why we shouldn't compare it to adrenal fatigue. His research on fatigue, cortisol levels, and what he has discovered. Adrenal Fatigue: Is It Real? The Hidden Truth About "Adrenal Fatigue" Common thoughts about adrenal fatigue, hormonal changes, and stress that are wrong and outdated. Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst Reprint Edition by Robert M. Sapolsky Common Viruses That Can Trigger Chronic Fatigue (CFS)/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis │The Best Viral Infection Treatment Approach Why fatigue affects us differently depending on outside factors such as work and relationships. Why Stress Causes Fatigue and How To Overcome Stress The fact that people who have disease from lifestyle choices actually have slightly higher cortisol levels than healthy people and thus our adrenal glands don't wear out. Exceptions with autoimmune diseases such as Addison's Disease and its connection to chronic fatigue. [1:11:00] What Actually Causes Fatigue? What biomarkers are the determining factor of fatigue if cortisol is not the source. The fact that the 50+ studies on the adrenal fatigue theory have all failed to prove that it is true. Why the primary sources that regulate our energy levels are the mitochondria, the brain, and sickness behavior. Dr. Robert Naviaux Unpacking what the cell danger response is and how mitochondria are critical hubs for sensing what is going on in our environments. The two modes of mitochondria based on their environment to either pump out energy or shut down if they detect threats. Dr. Martin Picard on How Stress Affects Your Body (and Your Mitochondria) What sickness behavior is and why one of the fundamental symptoms of it is fatigue. How the human body has evolved to conserve energy to threats by resting and diverting that energy to defending off threats. Metabolic features of chronic fatigue syndrome What the metabolomic panels cover in its biomarker testing for adrenal fatigue and how Dr. Naviaux and his team found that cortisol levels were normal. Why we really overestimate just how much information biomarkers are going to give us about a person's health. The fact that 95% of the time, blood panel tests do not actually identify anything that is abnormal in a person with chronic fatigue. Why lifestyle variables and symptoms are enormous clues as to what is going on with a person's health. What simple steps you can take if you are experiencing chronic fatigue including food and supplements. The Energy Blueprint Supplements 60-Day Energy Blueprint Program 359 Shawn Wells Surfwise trailer breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Creating, Not Gaining, More Energy "Look inward both literally and metaphorically because the source of energy is your own body's cells. It's not stimulant pills that you take externally or this and that prescription drug. It's how do you build more energy at the cellular level. How you create and cultivate a body that is capable of producing more energy. That's what it's all about." - Ari Whitten The Unique Impact Between Sleep & Cortisol Levels "Even if you are healthy and don't have fatigue, just the one factor of being an night owl chronotype and going to bed late at night will dramatically alter your cortisol levels. If you take a group of healthy people who are either morning people or night owls and you look at their cortisol levels and you chart it, those people on average will have cortisol levels that would get them diagnosed by someone who believes in adrenal fatigue as having adrenal fatigue. However, that's not at all what's going on; it's just a function of being a night owl chronotype. That's one factor but circadian rhythm and sleep dysregulation across the board is the single most common reason for HPA axis dysfunction." - Ari Whitten Exposing America's Sick Care System "How do we mimic, support, and optimize the natural systems of the human body? It's literally the difference between looking at a disease like diabetes or neurological disease and saying, 'How can we study what biochemical pathway is causing this disease and how can we develop a drug that interrupts that biochemical pathway that will therefore cure this disease?' which is a paradigm which almost never works to actually cure diseases; 97% of drugs can only address symptoms at best versus the paradigm that says, 'How can we understand the big picture of what are the root causes that led to the development of that condition in the first place, address those causes while understanding that the human body has an innate capacity for self-regeneration and self-healing, and how can we give the right inputs to allow the body to express that?'... ...These are fundamentally different ways of thinking and if somebody's goal is to actually be healthy and energetic and live a long life to avoid developing chronic disease, be on over 15 prescription drugs, and be in and out of the hospital with a terrible quality of life - If you actually want health, energy, and longevity, the goal is to optimize your body's innate capacity for healing and self-regeneration." - Ari Whitten Links From Today's Show Ari Whitten The Energy Blueprint Podcast Dr. Joseph Mercola Joseph Campbell 332 John Wineland Jordan Peterson Hans Selye (1907–1982): Founder of the stress theory Paul Chek Adrenal Fatigue: Is It Real? In Episode 004, we are joined by the Head Athletic Trainer for the US Air Force Academy Football program, Erick Kozlowski. Erick begins our discussion by outlining his early years in school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and how it influenced the early part of his career. #71: High-Intensity vs Low-Intensity Exercise, with Fitness Trainer Adrienne HanoverIntro, Summary, Bio:I'm happy to introduce you today to my longtime friend and former collaborative partner Adrienne Hanover. I asked her on the podcast today because so many of you expressed interest in learning about high intensity vs low intensity exercise. I posted a poll inside my facebook group, The Foundation of Wellness, and the top request, to my surprise, was high intensity vs low intensity training. And since I am not a fitness excerpt or personal trainer, I wanted to bring someone on who's fun to talk to, relatable, and experienced in the fitness industry. In this episode Adrienne explains the difference between High and Low Intensity training, why she prefers to call it High Impact and Low Impact training, who should train for what, and what PHAT is. Adrienne is no stranger to the fitness world. Having started her career in fitness in 1995 as a personal trainer, group fitness instructor and fitness nutrition coach. Adrienne's certifications are with NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). She's attained her personal training, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. >>> Join me inside my new facebook group: “The Foundation of Wellness - a Refreshing Diet & Lifestyle Chat”facebook.com/groups/FOWpodcastFor professional Inquiries contact host Marisa Moon, marisa@ marisamoon.com;Points of Discussion:- What's High Intensity Interval Training?- Is Low Intensity Exercise as Effective?- Intensity is Subjective- “Impact” isn't as subjective- High-Intensity with warmup 20-25 minutes- Low-Intensity minimum 30 minutes or break it up throughout the day - “The Talk Test” - Heart rate up enough to feel like you're working, but you can still talk.- The gas/driving analogy- High intensity or High Impact is not recommended with injuries- Work your way up to High Intensity, it's not for beginners - HIIT workouts online might be a good at-home test, try one round instead of the full workout - Listen to your body, you shouldn't get dizzy or sick with high-intensity - Take the modifications in a class so you don't push too hard too fast - Ignore others' intensity and focus on what your body is telling you- Listener questions: - Difference between High & Low Intensity - Remember: High intensity pulls from your body's sugar stores (limited energy supply). Low Intensity pulls from fat stores (virtually unlimited supply) - What's the least amount of time needed and how does she know if she's in the zone? - You'll be burning fat no matter what, but more in low intensity - PHAT: Peripheral Heart Action Training - Strength Training, alternating upper to lower body - Key is to keep it moving - Little-to-no rest between - No compound movements - You're making the heart work to switch blood volume from lower to upper body - 45 minutes - You should be sweating - Start with larger muscles to smaller muscles - PHAT is a one-stop-shop and the equivalent to HIIT without the high impact moves or much risk of injury - “Maffetone Formula”, Aerobic Heart Rate Max, Calculated 180-Age = target heart rate for low-intensity and fat burning - Tip: easier on your joints to put the treadmill on slight incline - Which is better for building muscle? - High intensity requires power which helps trigger muscle growth - Low Intensity can include strength training and build muscle too - Fast Twitch vs Slow Twitch Muscle Fibers are Genetic Predispositions which can affect how your body responds - Big difference between muscle “strength” and muscle “endurance”. PHAT is more about endurance. - Remember to change it up - Don't “overtrain” or you risk breaking down muscle for energy - Weight-training is where it's at - help's with bone density, stability, metabolism, longevity - Remember protein 30-120 minutes after working out - 80% of your body composition is determined by what you eat - Don't ruin the efforts of your workout with crap food - “Compensation theory” shows the brain triggering you to eat more calories and more carbs following a workout - You will be more hungry the more you workout. Make wise choices. - Don't eat too closely to a workout (at least an hour before or more)- Follow Adrienne's Postpartum Journey after twins and gaining 80 lbs. Australian Fitness Podcast Episode #18 - Lee McDermott – Olympian, Elite Gymnast and Performance Enhancement Specialist.Lee McDermott is a clever and talented guy. Talented because as an elite gymnast he went to the 1996 Olympics, won 2 Gold and 1 Bronze Medal at the Commonwealth Games and was British National Champion in 1994 and 1996. He also competed in 5 World Championships and 4 European Championships. And he’s clever because he has taken all of those years as an elite athlete to now coach at the elite level and provide his expertise as a movement specialist to other sports that can benefit and learn from the sport of gymnastics to enhance their own movement competency. This has taken him all over the world, including 10 years as Head Coach in the Cirque du Soleil. More recently he has applied his craft with Surfing Australian, the Broncos in the NRL and the Gold Coast Suns in the AFL. It makes sense to me that you can enhance performance in other sports by enhancing overall movement competency and skill, and when you think of insanely difficult movements, completed with precision, strength, skill, co-ordination and courage, you think of gymnastics, well, I do anyway. So our conversation was around his skills, experience and knowledge in that area, and it was another interesting chat with a person who has reached elite levels as a competitor and now as a coach.Enjoy.For further information or to work with Lee, his contact details are:Leemc1102@gmail.com or Lee McDermott on LinkedIn.

This is National Men's health week, and I am super excited to have with us today in this episode Jonathan to speak up about men's health and emotional well being! Jonathan is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, & Performance Enhancement Specialist. He is also the founder & Coach of The Recover U Coaching Program for Men in Recovery. We spoke about important topics that many communities struggle to speak up such as alcohol and drug addictions. We also discussed the importance of men emotional wellbeing because it is something not discussed very often. I brought up about my faith into this conversation because as a Muslim female personal trainer, I am aware this alcohol and drug addiction problem exists in so many Muslim communities as it has impacted so many families and individuals. But I realized how hard it is for us to accept this reality and how hard it is for us to speak up about it. There should be no shame because drug and alcohol addictions are a real problem in ALL communities, and it is something that we must address on how to help our Muslim brothers and sisters and everyone from all faiths! Today's episode discusses the following topics: Jonathan's story on how he got into alcohol and drugs and how he got out of it. The challenges of being a man and expressing emotions. Why most men won't stay sober? Jonathan's experience with 12-step program through AA (Alcohol Anonymous) Why being sober is not enough? The importance of connection! And much more! You can find Jonathan on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/recoverucoaching and on Instagram at www.instagram.com/recover.u To sign up with Jonathan's program, visit www.recoverU.net If you are someone struggling with this problem or know someone, please do not feel ashamed about yourself. Get out there and seek help! I am here for you and so is Jonathan. Let's continue on speaking up about these taboo-topics because if we keep hiding them under the rug, we're making the problem worse and worse. We need to confront reality and help others who are struggling in silence! Do not forget, you can find me on social media at BeFit4Akhirah. (www.facebook.com/befit4akhirah) & (www.instagram.com/befit4akhirah) Thank you for tuning in today, and please share this episode with family and friends! Be Strong. Be Fit. BeFit4Akhirah.

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, I am speaking to Performance Enhancement Specialist and Author, Nick Grantham. I must admit, its taken me far too long to get Nick on the podcast. Nick did feature as a round table guest in a Special Football Edition of the podcast in episode #21 but it was great to get him on a podcast on his own. There are so many things I could have spoken to Nick about given his unbelievable experience but I decided on S&C for youth athletes and something that Nick has been very vocal about over the last 5 years and thats getting a job in S&C. Hopefully this will lead to a part 2 to discuss everything else. Enjoy. Who is Nick Grantham (education, background and current role) S&C for young athletes? Building a philosophy Where do we start? Are we obsessed with being able to quantify everything we do? Does this lead to a lack of creativity? Playing other sports? Getting and keeping a job in S&C Education vs experience Are young coaches doing it wrong when it comes to getting a job? Creating multiple income streams Personal training Why is it looked down upon? What can it add to a coaches experience? Writing & blogging Volunteering? Building a 'network' Its not what you know, its who you know? 'Networking' How? Why? His TBI came in his youth after a gust of wind tipped over a basketball hoop onto his head, giving him a nice, healthy TBI. We discuss nutrition, training, and simply how to treat your body better after a TBI. I dug this conversation, and I hope you do too. His story starts at 7:34

Last week, I went rafting in the Grand Canyon, and I completely unplugged with zero cell phone or internet for five days. I came out of this "digital detox" extremely nervous about what my e-mail inbox would look like, how many voicemails and text messages I'd have, and what kind of fires I'd need to put out on the business front. But amazingly, things were just fine. It took me two hours to catch-up on e-mail. None of my clients died, and most got through their pre-written workouts just fine without me. The post office was still delivering mail to my home. And life, my body, and my brain felt very, very good. Detoxed. Clean. My guest today, Joe DiStefano, is all about the digital detox.
