We often associate energy poverty with developing nations, but the reality is that tens of millions of Americans struggle to pay their monthly energy bills. Oftentimes, they forgo heating or cooling their homes in order to pay rent or buy food. And ultimately, they risk losing access to energy altogether, through utility shutoffs. For families living in inadequate housing with poor insulation and inefficient appliances, energy insecurity impacts health, comfort, and quality of life. For some, government assistance programs are a lifeline. Yet, despite rising energy rates, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is in danger of losing funding. So what policy solutions could address the systemic causes of energy insecurity? How can government assistance be reframed to better support and empower energy insecure households? And will the transition to clean energy alleviate or worsen energy insecurity? This week, Jason Bordoff speaks with Diana Hernández about her recent book that seeks to answer those questions and proposes a framework for energy equity. Diana is an associate professor at Columbia University and co-directs the Energy Opportunity Lab at the Center on Global Energy Policy. Her book, "Powerless: The People's Struggle for Energy," which she co-authored with Jennifer Laird, an assistant professor at Lehman College, was released in April. Credits: Hosted by Jason Bordoff and Bill Loveless. Produced by Mary Catherine O'Connor, Caroline Pitman, and Kyu Lee. Engineering by Sean Marquand. Stephen Lacey is executive producer.
New York is on the verge of becoming the 11th state plus DC to give citizens suffering from terminal diseases the right to die when and as they choose. Oregon was the first state 25 years ago to grant this right. Religious leaders, champions of the right to life, even some advocates for the disabled worry that such laws open the way to abuse, coercion, and worse. It seems never to have occurred anywhere, but death is a fearful issue and dying fraught with guilt and worry. We talk with a lawyer and a legislator who have led the campaign in New York for a better say to die, forcing the issues into the open and swaying opinions so that a bill making it's way through the legislature now could shortly be on the governor's desk for a signature.Corinne Carey from Troy NY is a lawyer, organizer, and policy strategist. She joined the non-profit organization Compassion & Choices after nearly a decade with the New York Civil Liberties Union where she served as deputy legislative director and where as co-chair of the statewide Women's Equality Coalition she helped lead efforts to modernize New York's abortion law well before most believed that Roe v. Scientists say ancient footprints left in wet dirt on a Kenyan lakeside suggest that two early human ancestors were neighbors about 1.5 million years ago. Two separate species made the sets of footprints “within a matter of hours, or at most days,” said paleontologist Louise Leakey, a writer of the research published recently in the journal Science. Paleontologists study fossils to learn about the history of life on Earth. Scientists already knew from earlier fossil finds that these two extinct lines of human development – called Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei – lived about the same time in the Turkana Basin. But dating fossils is not exact. “It's plus or minus a few thousand years,” said paleontologist William Harcourt-Smith of Lehman College and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He was not involved in the study Yet with fossil footprints, “there's an actual moment in time preserved,” he said. “It's an amazing discovery.” Researchers found the fossil footprints in 2021 in what is today Koobi Fora, Kenya, said Leaky, who is based at Stony Brook University in New York. Study co-writer Kevin Hatala is a paleoanthropologist at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He said the two species likely knew of each other's existence whether they left the prints at the same time or a day or two apart. “They probably saw each other, probably knew each other was there and probably influenced each other in some way,” Hatala said. Scientists were able to tell the difference between the two species because of the shape of the footprints. The shape of each informed researchers about the structure of the foot and how it was being used at the time. Homo erectus appeared to be walking similarly to how modern humans walk – striking the ground heel first, then moving weight over the ball of the foot and toes and pushing off again. The other species, which was also walking upright, was moving “in a different way from anything else we've seen before, anywhere else,” said co-writer Erin Marie Williams-Hatala, a human development anatomist at Chatham. Among other details, the footprints suggest greater ability of movement in their big toe, compared to Homo erectus or modern humans, said Hatala. Our common primate ancestors probably had hands and feet fit for grasping branches. But, over time, the feet of human ancestors developed to permit walking upright, researchers say. The new study adds to a growing amount of research that suggests the change to walking on two feet did not happen at a single moment, in a single way. Instead, there may have been a number of ways that early humans learned to walk, run and slide on prehistoric muddy hills. “It turns out, there are different gait mechanics – different ways of being bipedal,” said Harcourt-Smith. “事实证明,存在不同的步态机制——双足行走的不同方式,”哈考特-史密斯说。

Over the past several months, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's claim that immigrants are taking “Black jobs” has stirred up a lot of emotions, ranging from anger to outright ridicule. This narrative has not only been a talking point in debates but has also sparked conversations on social media and in communities across the country. It taps into a larger, more complicated history of how race and labor are intertwined, and how certain groups are often pitted against each other. But the idea of immigrants “taking” jobs is not new—it's an old tactic, used to create division. Today – we'll explore the history behind these narratives. To help us make sense of these issues, we're joined by Dr. Bryan Warde, a professor of social welfare at Lehman College. https://epicenter-nyc.com/why-black-jobs-narrative-reminds-us-of-historical-anxieties/ https://epicenter-nyc.com/election-2024/ https://epicenter-nyc.com/politics/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How can you focus on muscle and body composition in menopause, specifically gaining muscle and losing fat? How many sets, repetitions, and how much rest should you take? How much can you follow research featuring young athletic men and how should you advocate for yourself when trainers aren't using science based on women? We cover this all today with my guest who is a well-respected and prolific researcher and published author in the field of human performance. Optimizing muscle and body composition in menopause, that is gaining muscle and losing fat is the focus of this episode. A researcher I met personally a decade ago, whose name has become nearly synonymous with any new study on muscle, hypertrophy, and protocols, joins me. Want Stronger Muscles? Let's Talk Muscle and Body Composition in Menopause! Women in midlife are often more susceptible to negative effects of stress. We have a frequent occurrence in our membership of women who are “pushing through” and not actually getting stronger or more fit, because of adrenal insufficiency or a combination of things, we find that less is more, if we can get adequate stimulus during a session and balance that with adequate recovery, we have a better opportunity to improve quality of life for women who need muscle mass and bone density but not at the cost of exhaustion and injury. My Guest: BRAD SCHOENFELD Brad Schoenfeld, PhD, CSCS, CSPS, FNSCA, is a professor of exercise science at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, where he serves as the graduate director of the Human Performance and Fitness program. He also formerly served as the Sports Nutritionist for the New Jersey Devils hockey organization. Dr. Schoenfeld has published more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers on various exercise- and sports nutrition-related topics, and authored the seminal textbook, "Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy." He was the recipient of the 2016 Dwight D. Eisenhower Fitness Award, presented by the United States Sports Academy for outstanding achievement in fitness and contributions to the growth and development of sport fitness through outstanding leadership activity, as well as earning the 2018 National Strength and Conditioning Association Young Investigator of the Year Award. His research interest is to optimize body composition (muscle hypertrophy and fat loss) . In particular, his lab studies the manipulation of resistance training variables and their effects on muscular adaptations. QUESTIONS we Cover in this Episode: Why this? What originally propelled you into this field of study and ultimately to teach and advise others? What have been the most aha moments for you in conducting the research on muscle ? Define Muscle hypertrophy vs Muscle strength Define and elaborate on “Volume” We mentioned frequency of exercise and the consideration of the volume of recovery Time under tension and tempo training CONNECT: Website: https://www.lookgreatnaked.com/about_brad.php On Social: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brad.schoenfeld.cscs Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bradschoenfeldphd/ Resources: Hot, Not Bothered Challenge: https://www.flippingfifty.com/hnb-challenge 5 Day Flip: https://www.flippingfifty.com STRONGER: https://www.flippingfifty.com/getstronger Other Episodes You Might Like: Questions About Gaining Muscle and Strength for Women Over 50 - https://www.flippingfifty.com/gaining-muscle-and-strength/ 3 Steps to Gain Lean Muscle in Menopause - https://www.flippingfifty.com/gain-lean-muscle/ Short Workouts for Women Over 50 | What Works? - https://www.flippingfifty.com/short-workouts-for-women-over-50/

In this episode, I chat with Lawrence Fauntleroy - Director, Experiential Learning Lehman College, School of Business. Lawrence is a seasoned professional who dedicated 27 years of his life to the healthcare IT industry. Without the advantage of a college degree, Lawrence's path was shaped by a natural affinity for his field and a talent for forming meaningful connections—essentially building his career on what many would call "networking" before he himself was familiar with the term. However, his steadfast journey took a significant turn following a personal family tragedy, which prompted him to reevaluate his life's direction. This introspection led to a decision to pivot away from the security of his long-term career—often referred to as "golden handcuffs" due to the comfort and stability it provided—and step into the uncertainty of a new professional adventure. Lawrence is here to share his inspiring journey of personal growth, from the catalyst of tragedy to the triumphant completion of his education, crafting a narrative that proves: it's never too late to invest in oneself. We'll delve into the gritty details of how Lawrence and his team are revolutionizing the educational landscape, intertwining the essential hard skills with the soft skills of presence and critical thinking. He's bringing industry and academia into a dance of mutual accountability, cultivating a generation of professionals equipped not just with knowledge, but with the wisdom to apply it. From discussing pressing issues such as the decline of men in higher education to innovative solutions like repurposing real estate, Lawrence's insights are reshaping the value proposition of education. With the Hispanic-serving institution serving a kaleidoscope of cultures, Lehman College stands out as a beacon of diversity and opportunity in the Bronx. Lawrence isn't stopping there; with initiatives like the CUNY two x tech talent pipeline and the upskilling program, he's bridging gaps and lighting pathways for students straight into new industries. SynopsisIn 1953, the Louisville Orchestra was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation grant of $500,000 to commission, premiere and record 20th-century music to be issued on its own label, Louisville First Edition Records. By 1997, it had released nearly 150 discs, containing more than 450 compositions by living composers. On today's date in 1980, one of the Louisville commissions premiered and recorded by the orchestra was Tournaments by the then-41-year-old American composer John Corigliano.“As the title implies,” Corigliano writes, “Tournaments is a ‘contest piece,' a sort of mini-Concerto for Orchestra in which first-desk players and entire sections vie with each other in displaying their virtuosity.”The Louisville Orchestra received many awards for its ambitious commissioning project, while Corigliano went on to win Grammys and an Oscar, not to mention the Grawemeyer and Pulitzer prizes.Corigliano also is proud of his teaching positions at the Juilliard School and Lehman College in New York. “I think it's good for a composer to teach,” he says, “because you always have new students, and you have to begin at the beginning and make things clear.”Music Played in Today's ProgramJohn Corigliano (b. 1938) Tournaments Overture; Louisville Orchestra; Sidney Harth, cond. In this episode we interview Anthony Dest. Anthony Dest is assistant professor of anthropology at Lehman College and currently a faculty fellow at the Center for Place, Culture and Politics. He is also a member of the Colombia Freedom Collective. We talk with Anthony about three of his essays about political economy, organizing and resistance in Colombia. This conversation primarily focuses on the organization of Black Colombians in formations like the Black Communities Process (PCN), as well as indigenous communities and other grassroots social formations. Dest touches on the history of the US sponsored war on drugs in Colombia, the Peace Accords process in Colombia between the FARC and the Colombian government and on the resistance of the Liberation of Mother Earth Process. We also talk about some of the contradictions created by neoliberal reforms in Colombia and through an examination of the dialectical relationship between inclusion and autonomy, how Black and indigenous communities have organized in light of those reforms, while also looking at the various contradictions that have arisen along the way. Finally we talk about coordinated action and more spontaneous rebellion amid national strikes, and the election of the Petro and Márquez administration as well as other local electoral efforts. We close with an important conversation on the political prisoners who have been repressed in response to some of the uprisings we discuss, and ways that people can materially support the Colombia Freedom Collective, which we encourage folks to do. You can support the Colombia Freedom Collective at colombiafreedomcollective.org we'll include that link in the show notes as well as a place where you can access Dest's writings. And of course if you appreciate the work we do, please consider becoming a patron of the show. You can do so for as little as $1 a month at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism
