Random History is a podcast about random historical antics that are interesting and fun to learn about. We all know about the big guys and their basics, ww1, ww2, the cold war, but there's so much more to history than just that. Every nation, every peoples has a vibrant history, you've just gotta look for it. History is the most elaborate, adventure, sci-fi, romance, mystery, and horror novel put into one. The best part about it: it's real.

This was a 10th grade homework assignment in Chinese class that I translated into English. I put off recording it because I didn't think my lyrics were as good as my "Pearl of the Orient" translation. Title: 龙的传人 Original Artist: Hou Dejian (Taiwan, 1978) My Translation: Far in the East did a river glide, Chang Jiang is what we know it by. Far in the East did a river thrive, Its name is the Huang He. I've never witnessed Chang Jiang's grace, Only Meeting the waters in dreams of that place. I've never listened to Huang He's might, Surging swelling in dreams of the night. There lived a dragon in the ancient east, Zhong Guo is what we call old beast. There lived a people east back when, They were known as long de chuan ren. I grew beneath that dragon's foot, Raised to be one of the dragon's brood. Dark eyes, Dark hair, yellow skin, I am forever the dragon's kin. On a tranquil evening a century ago, That was the night a great conflict arose. Recall, how the gunfire shattered that silence, And by the sword knelt dishonored compliance. For many years artillery rumbled along, Year and years cannons trembled on. Dragon Dragon open your eyes, Keep them open forever more. Dragon Dragon open your eyes, Keep them open forever more.

Well, today is the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, so I thought singing a love song from WW2 Asia would be nice. I had a hard time hitting the low notes so it sounds weird at those parts. The reason the piano sounds so good is because I transposed the physical sheet music into musescore, then hit the play button. After this, my normal Thursday release schedule returns. BTW, if you were wondering, this song is from the neo-realist film Street Angels (马路天使), which is about a singer, a burglar, a prostitute (best girl), and a newspaper reader, displaced in the slums of Shanghai during the second Sino-Japanese War. Because of how well recieved it was during the war, it was often called the Chinese Casablanca. Title: 天涯歌女 Original Artist: 周旋

Original Title: 东方之珠 Original Artist: Lo Ta-yu (Taiwan, 1991) My Translation: Xiang Jiang winds down, Towards the south. Flows to Hong Kong, Where it belongs. Oriental Pearl, My beloved one, Do you still have the grace and romance you once did? Harbor reflects,  The moon's convex. The dark night burns bright, With flames of citylight. Oriental Pearl, Rests not at night, Watch your history change before your very eyes. Cold sea breeze blows, For five thousand years, Your every teardrop speak to me nonstop on your honor. Let tides follow through, As I bless you, Promise to remember your ever unchanged eastern face. Curved shaped transports, Drift through the port. The vast blue sea strip,  Swirls behind the ships. Oriental Pearl, Hold me forever, Let me build warmth on your once desolate chest. Cold sea breeze blows, For five thousand years, Your every teardrop speak to me nonstop on your honor. Let tides follow through, As I bless you, Promise to remember your ever unchanged eastern face. Cold sea breeze blows, For five thousand years, Your every teardrop speak to me nonstop on your honor.
