The Winter War

The Russian invasion of Finland in November 1939 came as a bloody shock to the people of the small Baltic state, not least the government which appeared to have misread Joseph Stalin's intentions. The location for this terrible saga lies at the easternmost end of the Baltic Sea, between the Gulf of Finland and the huge Lake Ladoga, this is the rugged and very narrow Karelian Isthmus. Flying over this territory in a light plane reveals its stark and stern beauty, cut laterally by crisp blue lakes, blanketed in an evergreen forest, stubby grey and reddy grey hills pop up here and there. There was virtually nothing of value here at least at first, no minerals, very little agriculture as the soils are poor. That was going to change when the Finns discovered large deposits of nickel in the Petsamo region and would hand over mining concessions to the British. The Russians did not like that one little bit. But it wasn't minerals that led to Moscow invading their much smaller neighbour, it was the fear of the Germans. This little bit of land was going to be fought over as it had been so often through history. The Karelian Isthmus is a land bridge between the seething eastward mass of mother Russia and Asia, and the immensity of the Scandinavian Peninsular that swells downward to the west. It's like a highway for tribal migration, a route for trade, a channel for cultural movements, and a gateway for conquest. The armies that have stormed across this isthmus include the Mongols, the Teutons, Swedes, the Russians themselves. And as the drumbeat towards war in the 1930s pounded, Soviet president Joseph Stalin was acutely aware that the German's could use this same route to attack Leningrad and Russia from the north west. This Third Reich juggernaut could pass eastwards through the Karelian Isthmus at the point where it widens into the Finnish mainland, and hit Leningrad in a matter of hours. At least that was what Moscow convinced itself on the eve of World War II. The fact that to get there the Germans would have to ship a vast quantity of material across the Baltic Sea was not really taken into account. It would have been a logistic nightmare which wasn't really feasible at that stage of the war. Attacking via Sweden overland was even more difficult. It made sense for Hitler and his generals to attack Leningrad, but using a far more common route via Lithuania. Leningrad is of course, St Petersburg, and St Petersburg is the hometown of Vladimir Putin. Another Russian leader who is paranoid about the Baltic States these days. When the Russian revolution in November 1917 led to the Tsar's overthrow, the Finns declared independence and Lenin could do very little — he was fighting his own civil war against the pro-Monarchy forces so Moscow initially recognized the new Finnish government. Finland now experienced a series of social ructions, class struggles, famine, and a standard of living that plunged. There were 40 000 Russian soldiers stationed in Finland, and these joined the new Finnish communist Red Guard which began to fight the White Guard, the militant arm of the upper classes and the bourgeoisie. A Finnish Civil war had begun. A right wing uprising in 1932 collapsed and that pretty much ended the effectiveness of the Finnish fascists, the country had survived the depression, coup attempts, fascist uprisings and their economy seemed to be looking up. Moscow kept the pressure up saying that Finland had to prove their good faith with a tangible, real world gesture. Finnish Prime Minister Cajander put out feelers, what would this entail? Ah, that's easy, replied the Russians, the most suitable gesture would be for Finland to cede, or lease, what the communist country called “the valueless islands in the Gulf of Finland” to Russia. Both Cajander and Holsti rejected this as out of the question. Desmond Latham blog

The investigation has reached the Hungerplan of the NSDAP-Reichsministers of Agriculture, Herbert Backe and Richard Walther Darré. In due manner we will see how the 20th century's largest man made famine came about and how it continues to shape our contemporary time. How did Backe outmanoeuvre his mentor to conquer the throne of evil? What really happened in the central black earth region, the largest magnetic anomaly on Earth known as Kursk? And why are the warmongers there today again? We go looking for the origins of the "Drive to the East" narrative, Blood and Soil and the mythology of the black on white cross of the Teutons. I'll read the addresses to the nation by Fichte and attack it with satirical poetry from Marx's third cousin Heinrich Heine. This and much more awaits you if you will join me in the very emotional and mind altering fourth instalment of The Return Of The Repressed Ecofascism series.  SOURCES Music:Penderecki: Symphony No. 3 / Threnody Niccolò Paganini: Caprice no. 5 Sumina Studer John Mayall: Out Of Reach Jesse Ahmann - Montana Cellist : “Emotional Cello improvisation”. Tiw. ... The god Tiw was a deity of chief importance to the Anglo-Saxons as he was the god of war, swordplay, and the sky. Even though the Anglo-Saxons appealed to both Thunor and Woden in matters of warfare, Tiw was the official god of war. Tiw could also have been the original Allfather. He is the Germanic version of Tyr the God of War. Tiw is shrouded in a great deal of mystery, speculation, and rumor. The Germans or Teutons called him Tiw or Ziu, but rumors persist that he was also known as Things. Which things? We have no idea. But that, so we are told, is where the German word for Tuesday (Dienstag) is derived.

This week, we have a special guest with Sandra helping out with the presentation of the History of France in English podcast. We look at the loss of Cisalpine Gaul to the Romans after invasion by the Teutons and the Cimbri or Kymrians. As usual, some Gauls side with one side while some side with the other. The Teuton forces and the Cimbri are wiped out. In our new feature, A River Runs Through It, the Loire, the longest river in France, is examined in all its glory. Cocktail Party Slapdown takes a look at the French victory of Fleurus, which saw the French Republic forces beat back the royalist supporting First Coalition armies of Britain, Austria, the Hapburghs and Netherlands.

Thunder Wizard - Teutonic Shamanism

In this episode I explore the concept of the Teutonic tribes as "barbarians." the modern Western world believes that it is founded on classical and near east concepts. But, the reality is, after the fall of Rome, the European continent was drastically transformed by the Teutonic tribes that migrated from northern Europe. It was the Teutons, saxons, franks and Goths who revived the Roman culture. These Teutonic tribes replaced their ancestral memories with that of Rome, Greece and Israel. In this episode, I will (ramblingly and rantingly) explore and challenge our accepted historical view of the middle ages and the real influence of the Teutonic people on the modern world. We will also look at the Saxon immigration to Brittania and the real reason for the birth of the Viking Culture...

In this episode, I examine the runes from the stone-age perspective. In my opinion, the Rune sounds are a very ancient oral tradition that teach us how to survive and prosper on all levels. The first Eight Runes taught pre-historic Teutons how to survive and prosper in the physical realm. By looking at the first eight of the Elder Futhark, we can get a glimpse of what concepts, things and values were most important to our pre-historic European ancestors.

Review of Travian: 6 servers with different approaches 3 races to play Romans (all around, cavalry-heavy) Can raise or extend a building and resource field simultaneously, High Defense-bonus by wall, Merchants can carry 500 units of resources (speed: 16 fields/hour), Very powerful infantry, average cavalry, development is expensive and takes a long time. Teutons (attackers, aggressive) Plunder bonus: the cranny of enemies only hides 2/3 of its content, The earthwall is almost indestructable, but only gives a minimal defense bonus, Merchants can carry 1000 units of resources (speed: 12 fields/hour), Very cheap and fast trained troops which are excellent plunderers, Weak defense Gauls (defensive, passive, but can be powerful) Speed bonus: Fastest troops in the game, average defense-bonus because of palisade, Merchants can carry 750 units of resources (speed: 24 fields/hour), Cranny is twice as big, Expensive siegeweapons, Cheap settlers Main screens Village Overview (this is where you raise resources) Village Center (this is where the buildings are built) Surrounding Map (who your neighbors are) Messages (alliance, others) Statistics Reports (who attacks you) Resources: Lumber, Clay, Iron, Crop Crop is a persistent need, each building and unit requires a constant supply of crop Buildings Main building to decrease building time Barracks for troops, Marketplace for trading, Embassy for alliances Cranny is important, it protects resources from attack Warehouse for storing resources, Granary for storing crop Academy for better units, Blacksmith for better units, Stables for cavalry Rally point for attacking, Armory for increasing the defense of your units Residence for settling new areas (make new cities) City Walls, Resource enhancing buildings, and more Alliances Forums are good and let you know what you are doing wrong and are good for alliances. Plus gives some nice extra options such as queuing, resource look forward (when the resources will be available), better statistics, longer map view, better combat simulator, notebook, sorting function on marketplace. $2.99/month; $6.99/3 months; $19.99/10 months; $19.99/1 year Online experience with Travian: Initially, I thought this game was a slow boring game, but as I played it and got into an alliance, I found it to be more engaging. I definitely plan on playing more often and will report back in a few months Alliances are key Cranny is very important Different races play differently Play often even for a few minutes here and there Review of BoardGameGeek: Three games Roads and Boats Kingdoms (Auf Heller und Pfennig) Tigris and Euphrates PHP / mySQL based Turn-based, non-interactive Online experience with BoardGameGeek: Could use an email reminder feature and a slightly better interface The rules are pretty nice Non-interactive (can be days between rounds) Next week: Boardgame site: Atari Play: http://games.atari.com/playgames/home.jsp MOBBG: Imperia Online
