Seducing and Killing Nazis: Hannie, Truus and Freddie: Dutch Resistance Heroines of WWII This is the astonishing true story of three teenage Dutch girls, Hannie Schaft and sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen, that has inspired many throughout the world. When Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in World War II, these girls took up arms against the enemy by seducing high-ranking Nazi officers, luring them into the woods and killing them. They provided Jewish children with safe houses and gathered vital intelligence for the resistance. They did what they did "because it had to be done". Above all, they tried to remain human in inhuman circumstances. Hannie Schaft was executed by the Nazis three weeks before the end of the war and became the icon of female Dutch resistance. Truus and Freddie Oversteegen survived the war, but were forever haunted by the demons of their past.©2019 Sophie Poldermans (P)2020 Sophie PoldermansBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Matt Crawford speaks with author and illustrator Maria Van Lieshout about her book, Song of a Blackbird. In 1943 Amsterdam, Emma Bergsma's world changes when she witnesses Jewish families being forcibly deported to concentration camps. That pivotal moment lights a fire within her, and she decides to join the Dutch Resistance. Before long, Emma is drawn into a clandestine world of printing presses and counterfeiters, with thousands of lives on the line. In 2011 Amsterdam, teenage Annick's world has changed as well. A search for a bone marrow donor for her beloved oma leads to a shocking revelation: her grandmother was secretly adopted as a child. The only clues to finding their lost family are a series of art prints hanging on the wall―each signed by a mysterious “Emma B.” This timely graphic novel weaves together two timelines to reveal how art, in the face of political upheaval and nearly insurmountable adversity, can become our greatest lifeline.

The second in this 2 part series on The Hiding Place, this episode finishes out the story and pulls some more themes together.  Through the extraordinary faith of Corrie and her sister Betsie, they are able to see the love and grace of God despite the dark circumstances they encounter.  Both go through months of imprisonment because they were part of the Dutch Resistance.  But they have the opportunity to lead Bible studies and encourage other prisoners; even to serve as witnesses to guards and officers.  Finally, a theme of forgiveness is readily present as Corrie must grapple with how to forgive those who did much harm to her and her family.  Through Christ, we see an example we should follow.  Links for items mentioned:The Hiding Place (original movie — free on YouTube):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zNDe30_eKwThe Hiding Place (2023 movie):  https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0CQ6VK4T1/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_rHiding Place museum:  https://www.corrietenboom.com/en/homeThe Hiding Place Book (35th Anniversary Edition):  https://a.co/d/d4hImFm

Bob Willis may not be a Veteran but his heart beats passionately for those who have served. He has organized ten living history events that allow Veterans to share first hand stories with the rest of us. The whole endeavor began when Bob and his boys watched the “Band of Brothers” series. His boys asked if it would be possible to meet some of the surviving members of Easy Company.  When an opportunity came up to attend an Easy Company reunion in Norfolk, Bob and his boys jumped at the chance. Bob gave gifts to each of the 35 surviving members. When asked how they could return the favor, Willis hosted ten of them for a dinner in his hometown of Kingston, New York. The “God and Country Veterans Living History Event” was born. This year will be the 10th event that Willis has organized.  The event always features an amazing group of Veterans who tell their stories during the daylong conference and closing dinner.  This year's events will feature Veterans from World War II on up to the Afghanistan war. He tries to focus on combat Veterans but occasionally will feature others who have unique stories like Irene Perbal, a member of the Dutch Resistance.  All proceeds from the event benefit the Hudson Valley National Center for Veteran Integration. He also emphasizes the importance of sharing these stories with younger generations. Bob takes conference participants also pay visits to the local schools to share their stories. Bob and I share our thoughts on the importance of documenting these stories so they can be shared and remembered. We all have Veterans in our community that are literally “living history”. TAKEAWAY: “I had a choice. I didn't have to go to war. All those men and women who fought wars before me gave me that choice.”

Known among the Nazis as "the girl with the red hair," Hannie Schaft was a resistance fighter so deadly that Adolf Hitler personally ordered her capture. She was a 24-year-old Dutch student when the Nazi forces occupied the Netherlands in 1940. Fuelled by a desire to protect her country, Hannie became an integral part of the Dutch Resistance, at a time when speaking out was dangerous and resistance could cost lives, Hannie displayed unyielding courage and determination. She and other women fighters were able to transport weapons in bicycle baskets, plant bombs and eventually lure Nazi officials and conspirators into honeytraps before assassinating them, as most didn't believe women were capable of committing such acts. She was eventually caught, tortured and executed. Her life and bravery were extraordinary and historian and historical novelist Buzzy Jackson joins Dan to tell Hannie's incredible story. And it's a struggle that only gets more complicated when both friend and foe are not behind or in front of you, but all around, and it gets hard to tell one from the other. They provided Jewish children with safe houses and gathered vital intelligence for the resistance. They did what they did "because it had to be done." Above all, they tried to remain human in inhuman circumstances. Hannie Schaft was executed by the Nazis three weeks before the end of the war and became the icon of female Dutch resistance. In 1970, James Baldwin wrote a letter to Angela Davis in which he said, “What has happened, it seems to me, and to put it far too simply, is that a whole new generation of people have assessed and absorbed their history, and, in that tremendous action, have freed themselves of it and will never be victims again.” Aloha gentle readers and welcome to the latest episode of Random Acts of Living! So the above sentence by James Baldwin caught my attention because well I am wondering if really it is true? If we understand our history on a micro and macro level can we free ourselves of it?   isn't it really when our past shames us that it holds power over us??  This week's episode is another talk story session with my dad when he was in the hospital and as it turns out he really likes being on my blog.. that is what he calls the podcast.. So we delved into a subject that may be difficult for most of us  I know it has been hard for me ..   I am impressed that my dad through his research into the KKK in Iowa in the 1960s ( actually is still quite active in the area even today- which will no doubt be another podcast episode) finds out about my grandfather's past affiliation with the KKK pre-WWII. Maybe after WWII, after his nephew was killed by the Nazi's,  fighting in the Dutch Resistance maybe my grandfather,  a Dutch immigrant himself, had a  reckoning about white supremacy,   and saw that buying into racism maybe had some clear economic fears that were preyed on upon by those who had the most to lose and wanted my grandfather to tow that white supremacist line.. he still hat he did,  to me what is more important is what my father decided to do, the choices he made helped to create my world view and that of my son for which I am grateful. I am also grateful to hear his compassion and how as he calls out what is wrong he continues to embrace my grandfather for all his flaws and to this act of radical compassion even as he moves his family to be raised in a much more diverse environment is amazing to me and gives me hope. if we can all access that in ourselves and for others, maybe just maybe we will be able to shift this paradigm on a systemic level..  I recently read an article by Nicolas Kristoff about Daryl Davis, 63,  a Black musician with an unusual calling: He hangs out with Ku Klux Klan members and neo-Nazis and chips away at their racism.  He essentially used his curiosity around racism to forge friendships. with KKK members, and through these friendships he is able to reach people and help them change. “Daryl Davis demonstrates that talking face-to-face with your ideological opponents can motivate them to rethink their views,” said Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. “He's an extraordinary example of what psychologists have repeatedly shown with evidence: In over 500 studies, interacting face-to-face with an out-group reduced prejudice 94 percent of the time.“You won't get through to people until you've earned their trust,” Grant added. “You're not likely to earn their trust until you've met them face-to-face and listened to their stories.”Read the entire article here!So if we can have the conversations and tell our stories and walk into this very messy and uncomfortable world with our truly curious hearts and mind and with an understanding about what that shadow side is of humanity and how it works, tell our stories,  take the power away from them and show them the light of day.. yeah maybe we can change the world..  gentle listener it is worth trying right, what have we got to lose??Thank-you for

A Murderess Affair
The Youngest Members of the Dutch Resistance: Truus and Freddie Oversteegen

This episode was absolute chaos to upload. But, technical difficulties aside, it's probably one of my favorite episodes to date. Let's talk about Freddie and Truus Oversteegen, sisters who were the youngest members of the underground Haarlem Council of Resistance during World War II. Their missions? Seduce and murder Nazi commanders, sabotage railways, and free Jewish people from concentration camps. All while they were 14 and 16 years old.

Sophie Poldermans is a Dutch lecturer and women's rights activist, and the founder of "Sophie's Women of War." Sophie has documented some World War II history in her new boook: "Seducing and Killing Nazis". She personally knew Truus and Freddie Oversteegen for 20 years and worked closely with them for over a decade as a board member of the National Hannie Schaft Foundation. Hannie Schaft was killed by Nazis for her work in the Dutch Resistance, just 7 weeks before the war ended. She was just 25, and had been doing her work since she was 19. These Dutch Heroines gathered vital information, provided Jewish children with safe houses, stole identification papers, and bombed railways, along with liquidating the invaders. Sophie carries on this work because she knows we must not forget the past, as well, war continues, and women and children continue to be victimized. sophieswomenofwar.com/ , seducingandkillingnazis.com/
