Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. In this Episode, Emily interviews artist Jamil Hellu. Jamil shares his multicultural background—Brazilian, Syrian, Paraguayan, American, and queer—and discusses how these identities inform his work. The conversation explores his journey from Brazil to the U.S., his evolution as an artist, and his teaching at Stanford.Jamil talks about his latest exhibition, "In the Studio," at Rebecca Camacho Presents in San Francisco, which delves into identity, transformation, and the use of vibrant color and materials in self-portraiture. He reflects on his creative process, the influence of queer culture, and the importance of community in the Bay Area. The episode also features Jamil's thoughts on representation, the impact of artists like Claude Cahun, and the significance of residencies in his artistic development. Tune in for an inspiring discussion about art, identity, and the power of self-expression.About Artist Jamil Hellu:Jamil Hellu is a visual artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area, who creates personal and politically charged projects to expand the discourse on identity representation. Through an interdisciplinary studio practice rooted in photography, his work is a dynamic exploration of queerness, community, and cultural heritage.Born in Brazil and of Middle Eastern descent, Hellu's diverse ethnic background informs his practice and research, offering a critical lens through which to examine issues of race, discrimination, and belonging. In the 1860s, one of the bloodiest wars in the Western Hemisphere took place….and it wasn't the US Civil War. It was a war between Paraguay and an alliance of Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil, and it was one of the bloodiest ever fought in Latin America. It was a conventional war that resulted in a guerrilla war, which spawned famine and disease. Another League Cup game, another 0-6 win! Bloody hell!!! Well that won't be happening next time as Albion ended up with a trip to The Emirates to contend with in the draw on Wednesday. However it was a great trip and well worth it, for what turned out to be The Diego Gomez Show, with our Paraguayan midfield maestro netting a, what would you call it?, double brace aka 4 goal haul, with some spectacular strikes too. In the Pod Squad this time were Russ, David T, Chris, Sam, Ahmed, Alison, Dom, Alastair and Nick…the latter of whom was on a two match attending streak - an unbeaten one at that! - easy there, lad!!! We were also delighted to chat with Tykes fans Sam and his father Simon, who were great company. It was great to be back in Barnsley. Good town but it's also changed somewhat since our last visit, good beers, good club and good fans. Best of luck for the season lads! Stand or fall! Puerto Casado is a remote village in Paraguay, in South America. It's not dissimilar to many other rural towns in the area: red-brick houses, small grocery stores and unpaved roads. But what makes Puerto Casado an exception is that it's at the centre of a land dispute between the Paraguayan state, local residents and the Unification Church, a controversial religious group from South Korea. Ronald Avila-Claudio from BBC Mundo has recently been there. Plus, what the re-opening of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea means to people living there, with Girmay Gebru from BBC News Africa; and a diver swimming with a great white shark and other viral stories, with BBC Indonesian's Famega Syavira Putri. This episode of The Documentary comes to you from The Fifth Floor, the show at the heart of global storytelling, with BBC journalists from all around the world. A winger heading out of the club today is Sosa, but who will Forest replace him with? Join FFTV Whatsapp Group: https://www.whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaUO5bODzgTARNhlWd1h The departure of winger Ramon Sosa to Palmeiras for a reported $14m (£11m) fee, as announced by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano! In this Forest Fan TV update, Wolfie dissects what Sosa's exit means for Nuno Espirito Santo's squad as they prepare for the Premier League and Europa Conference League. After a challenging first season at the City Ground, where the 25-year-old Paraguayan made 23 appearances but started only four, Sosa's move to Brazil follows his struggle for regular game time. With Sosa's exit confirmed, Wolfie dives into who could replace the versatile winger, with Forest already linked to exciting talents like Lyon's Malick Fofana and PSV's Johan Bakayoko. Fofana, a 20-year-old Belgian speedster, has a deal agreed with Lyon but is holding out for Champions League clubs, while Bakayoko's flair could fill the void left by Sosa's pace on the left flank. Wolfie analyses how these potential signings could fit into Nuno's system and maintain Forest's attacking dynamism! The transfer market is heating up with reports of a potential fire sale at Juventus, and Wolfie breaks down the players linked to Nottingham Forest, including Vlahovic and Douglas Luiz. Wolfie weighs the pros and cons of pursuing these Juventus talents, questioning whether they align with Forest's ambitions to build a squad capable of competing in Europe. With the transfer window in full swing, let us know in the comments which Juventus players you'd love to see in the Garibaldi Red and how Forest should navigate this busy market! With nearly every club in the Premier League pursuing Liam Delap, he has finally made his choice! For Exclusive Content Join FFTV Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ForestFanTV Forest Fan TV brings you a massive transfer update as breaking news from The Athletic's David Ornstein confirms that Ipswich Town's star striker Liam Delap has made his decision, opting to join Chelsea despite interest from Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Everton. The 22-year-old, who scored 12 goals in the 2024/25 Premier League season, was a top target for Forest to bolster their attack, but his £30m release clause and preference for Champions League football with Chelsea have ended those hopes. Wolfie dives into what Forest's failure to land Delap means for their transfer strategy and how they can pivot to strengthen the squad. In other news, Forest's Paraguayan winger Ramon Sosa has publicly expressed his desire to remain in the Premier League, despite interest from Brazilian club Palmeiras, as reported by ESPN. Sosa, who joined Forest for €12m from Talleres last summer and contributed three goals in 23 appearances, could be a key figure in Nuno Espirito Santo's plans for the Conference League. Wolfie analyses Sosa's statement, his role in the squad amidst competition from players like Anthony Elanga, and whether Forest should build around him or consider offers to fund other transfers, especially with the club's £10.1m profit in 2023/24 and new squad cost ratio rules looming. What are YOUR thoughts on today's transfer developments? Are you gutted Forest missed out on Liam Delap, and who should they target instead to lead the line in Europe? Do you support Ramon Sosa's commitment to staying with Forest, or should the club cash in on him? Hi from the Amazon jungle. Honestly, if I'd known that AI would do such a good job of describing this podcast, I would have left it in charge and stayed longer. Although I will say, I asked it to write it in the style of the speaker, and it made me sound way more polite than I usually am to you scrubs. Enjoy! (PS - you will find the same show in your podcatcher, as normal.) In the heart of the Amazon, under a tin roof pummeled by tropical rain, I offer you a cosmic upgrade to Nietzsche's Amor Fati. While the German philosopher tells us to love our fate unconditionally, I'm proposing something more alchemical: co-creation with disappointment. It's not about passively accepting what happens, nor gaslighting yourself into loving the unlovable. Rather, it's asking "what choices do I have in the direction of beauty given the limitations before me in this moment?" Drawing from my own messy Paraguayan adventures during a Mars direct station in Cancer (sit down Scorpio risings, this one was truly mine to bear), I explore how this principle transforms practical enchantment beyond simple success/fail metrics into continuous creation. Whether you're dealing with planetary transits or broken water towers in indigenous villages, this approach connects the Dine concept of the Beauty Way with our magical capacity to participate in the unfolding of reality. Roll your suitcase through cosmic mud with me on this one. 00:02 - Introduction and recording conditions in the Amazon 00:48 - Explaining the concept of "Amor Fati" and Nietzsche's philosophy 02:23 - Comparing Nietzsche's idea with Stoicism's similar concept 04:37 - Why Gordon believes he's "more right" than both Nietzsche and the Stoics 06:49 - Co-creation with disappointment as an upgrade to "love your fate" 09:14 - Mars direct station and Cass Tyndall's insight on struggle 11:40 - How metaphysical laws relate to physical and psychological laws 14:06 - The moment-by-moment decision of co-creation and manifestation 16:05 - Lessons from Shipibo culture and challenging gaslight responses 18:21 - Finding beauty within disappointment and discomfort 20:47 - Moving beyond success/fail metrics in practical enchantment 21:58 - Continuous co-creation as a definition of magic

Hear about travel to Paraguay as the Amateur Traveler talks to Alex from AdventureToEveryCountry.com about this lesser-visited country that he has come to love. Why should you visit Paraguay? Alex says, "So Paraguay is more about the culture than anything else. It's not a country that you come to for bucket list tourist attractions. That's something where you might go to neighboring Brazil for Rio or Iguazu Falls on the border with Argentina. Paraguay is much more low-key. It's more about authentic culture, getting to know the locals, and getting off the tourist trail." Alex recommends several attractions and experiences for visitors to Paraguay, focusing on its unique cultural, historical, and natural offerings: Asunción (Capital City) Palacio de los López: The President's Palace, an iconic colonial-style building. Pantheon of Heroes: A mausoleum and site of national pride where past heroes are honored. Casa de la Independencia: A free museum showcasing Paraguay's peaceful independence history. Centro Cultural Manzana de la Rivera: A cultural center highlighting traditional Paraguayan music and arts. Costanera: A riverside promenade with views of the Paraguay River and the city. Paulista Grill: A Brazilian-style steakhouse serving exceptional meat and a variety of other dishes. Negroni Sky Bar: An upmarket bar offering panoramic views of the Paraguay River. ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-paraguay/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Many people say their experience of time changes after they have children, a phenomenon that Diego Báez captures in “Inheritance.” In this poem, a past, present, and future starring the same child shift ceaselessly in a parent's mind, like photos flipped through in an album, dots placed on a timeline, moments that one wishes they could build monuments for.Diego Báez, is a writer and educator in Chicago, where he teaches at the City Colleges of Chicago. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers University - Newark. A writer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, Báez's work has been published in Freeman's, The Rumpus, The Georgia Review, The Thing Itself Journal, Number Eleven Magazine, and Hobart. His poetry has appeared in Luna Luna, la fovea, Granta, and elsewhere. He serves as a Director of the Board for the National Book Critics Circle and the International David Foster Wallace Society.
