Special Guest: Dr. Sue Cornbluth This podcast provides tips, scripts, stories and steps to help parents and educators understand the unique challenges of children who feel different, cast aside or devalued because of experiences in their childhood. Sue Cornbluth talks about children who were in the foster care system or who were adopted and how many of these children can have challenged self esteem due to unanswered questions about their identity or internalized frustrations about their life circumstances. How can we help kids who are being fostered or who have been adopted (perhaps later in life), cultivate the high self esteem and self worth they deserve? What does it take to go from being neglected, abused, and told you'd never succeed—to leading high-stakes multi-million-pound mergers & acquisitions? In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Leaders in Disguise, I sit down with Hutton Henry, founder of Beyond M&A, a firm that specialises in technology due diligence for investors. But Hutton's journey to success wasn't easy. After losing his parents at five, he was placed in foster care, where he experienced racism, neglect, and emotional abuse. He was told every day that he was stupid, incapable, and would never get a job. His confidence was shattered - until he discovered coding at the age of eight, a skill that would eventually change his life. Now, as a leader in the high-pressure world of mergers and acquisitions, he helps investors spot risk, unlock business value, and guide leaders through the emotional rollercoaster of selling their companies. But the resilience that got him here? That was forged in survival. In this episode, we discuss:• Growing up in foster care & fighting against the labels put on him• Finding self-worth in tech & business despite early struggles• The mental toll of selling a business and how leaders can protect themselves• Why so many CEOs lose themselves in their companies (and how to take their identity back)• His simple but powerful "TIE" method to navigate leadership stress• How he turned personal trauma into a strength in the boardroomThis episode is for founders, CEOs, investors, and anyone who has ever doubted themselves - but refuses to let their past define their future.

Hi listeners! Welcome back to the podcast! This is season 5 (can you believe it?) and episode 117! I took a few weeks off to enjoy my family over the holidays and to spend some time on a few exciting things I have in the works, so I appreciate your patience as I took a break from putting out the podcast. But now we're back and there are a lot of exciting episodes coming up in this season and I can't wait to introduce them to you! Did you know that 20% of the youth that age out of the foster care system are instantly homeless. Tori Hope Petersen was one of those young adults who decided it would be easier to go it alone than have to navigate the system that caused her so much pain, having been in 12 foster homes from the ages of 12-18. But Tori was blessed to have mentors to come alongside her and help, eventually becoming adopted by her track coach. Tori's mom came from brokenness and generational curses and did the best she knew how, but Tori has become intentional about breaking those curses in her own family. She also does advocacy in the foster care system and has written two books, Fostered: One Woman's Powerful Story of Finding Faith and Family Through Foster Care, and her just released book, Breaking the Patterns that Break You: Healing from the Pain of Your Past and Finding Real Hope That Lasts. As I spoke to Tori, I realized that, even though she's still so young, her experiences have made her wise beyond her years. If Tori's story encouraged you would you kindly leave a rating and a review on your favorite podcast app? You can go to my Facebook or Instagram at Building Strong Homes and find a video there that will show you how to do that if you're not familiar with the process. Michael Chamberlain's fascination with wild turkeys began in his suburban childhood outside Richmond, Virginia, nurtured by Saturday hunting trips with his diesel mechanic father. Inspired by a wildlife biologist friend of his father's, Chamberlain pursued his passion for wildlife biology at Virginia Tech, specializing in fisheries and wildlife science. In graduate school, Chamberlain's research focused on wild turkeys in the Mississippi Delta, where he combined his love of hunting with academic study. This hands-on experience, involving capturing turkeys, attaching radio transmitters, and tracking their movements, cemented his career in turkey research. ⁣ Chamberlain has uncovered intricate social behaviors in wild turkeys, noting their tendency to be social for most of the year but solitary during reproduction. His studies reveal turkeys' complex social structures and hierarchies, similar to humans, and their regional subspecies variations. He highlights the historical domestication of turkeys, leading to today's large, non-flying commercial breeds, and contrasts their leaner, wilder counterparts. ⁣ An advocate for sustainable hunting, Chamberlain shares tips and emphasizes the importance of mentorship for aspiring hunters. His extensive research addresses concerns about declining turkey populations, particularly in the southeast and midwest.

So, in 2011, they launched Via 313, introducing Motor City-style pizza to Austin, Texas with a $30,000 investment and a food truck. Today, Via 313 (“by way of” 313 — Detroit's area code) boasts 17 units. Brandon and Zane explain how they:  Grew their business from a food truck to a full-service restaurant to an award-winning, multi-state concept with locations throughout the Southwest. Won over investors to help finance business expansion. Fostered owner-operator and investor relations. Developed a consistent brand and company culture at multiple locations. Plan to grow the concept to 30-plus units within the next four years.

Fostered by a woman in the congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, little Ashley caught the eye of the person that would adopt her as a part of their family. All Ashley wanted was to be “normal”, but her adoptive parents were in a cult that didn't allow for such. She would do all of the things asked of her by her adoptive family and tried to connect to the performative spirituality around her while ultimately feeling empty in that environment. Sadly, as Jehovah's Witnesses do, the very people that made the choice to adopt her into their family would also make the choice to shun her later when she wasn't who they wanted her to be. Her first book Fostered will be released this August, and I truly had to stop myself from quoting this book 100 times in our interview. In this episode, Tori not only shares her story with us, but provides so much hope and wisdom along the way. We talk about how trauma rolls over from generations, and how important it is to listen to the voices of children in foster care.
