TALK TO ME, TEXT ITEaster Monday brings a mix of solemn reflection and heated debate as we discuss Pope Francis's unexpected passing and what this means for Catholics worldwide – both devout and those who've stepped away from regular religious practice. The conversation takes a sharp political turn when examining former President Trump's recent "thinking out loud" comment about deporting "homegrowns next." This off-the-cuff remark ignited immediate controversy with political commentator Simone Sanders and Representative Glenn Ivey promoting the unfounded fear that Black Americans could be targeted for deportation. We cut through the race-baiting rhetoric to analyze what Trump likely meant about violent criminals while acknowledging the constitutional impossibility of deporting American citizens.Perhaps most passionate is our examination of the Boston Marathon's gender division policies. Coinciding with Patriots Day's 250th anniversary, this iconic American sporting event has permitted biological males to compete in women's divisions since 2018. We highlight the case of Ria Susing (born Robert Sheen Young), who has competed in female categories over 338 times, winning medals in 140+ instances – each victory displacing deserving women athletes. This practice fundamentally undermines athletic fairness and the competitive opportunities women fought decades to secure. When even "Women's Running Magazine" features biological males on covers meant to champion female athletes, we must ask: what spaces remain protected for women in sport? The episode concludes with a thought-provoking question about political awakening. What issues first captured your attention in your formative years? Was it military service, civil rights, environmental concerns, or something entirely different? He holds dual Ph.D. degrees in industrial economics and management from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and in industrial management from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (cum laude). His research focuses on the digital transformation of manufacturing, maritime, and healthcare sectors, platform ecosystems in the business-to-business (B2B) context, and artificial intelligence. He has published extensively in journals such as Organization Science, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Technovation, and Industrial Marketing Management. He also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Product Innovation Management and Journal of Business Research. Summary: In this episode, Marin Jovanovic discusses the evolution and characteristics of B2B platforms, contrasting them with B2C platforms. The conversation covers the peculiarities of B2B platforms, including data governance, network effects, transaction value, and the complexity of governance in multi-firm ecosystems. Marin also highlights the growing importance of data utilization, modular structures, and the emergence of generative ecosystems and meta-organizations in the B2B space. The discussion further explores the potential of AI in conjunction with platforms, particularly in the medical sector. Key Discussion Points: Definition of Platforms in the B2B Context: Marin shares his journey into platform research, transitioning from servitization to industrial platforms. Main Findings and Peculiarities of B2B Platforms: The discussion highlights differences in network effects, the higher value but lower volume of transactions, and the increased awareness and demands of participating companies compared to B2C platforms. Data Governance in B2B Platforms: Key challenges include the complexities of data governance, revenue sharing, and the project-specific nature of agreements. The Role of Humans in Matchmaking: The conversation explores whether highly specific B2B transactions might require more human intervention in matchmaking rather than relying solely on algorithms. Cyber-Physical Integration: The importance of merging information systems and management in the context of autonomous solutions is emphasized. Challenges in Explaining B2B Platform Models: The barriers in conveying the concepts of B2B platforms and ecosystems to managers, using the example of 5G technology, are discussed. Modularity and Generative Ecosystems: The significance of modularity in both architecture and management for fostering flexible and reconfigurable B2B ecosystems is highlighted. Open Innovation and Open Organization: The discussion connects B2B platforms to concepts of open innovation and broader organizational collaboration. Microservices and Ecosystem Envelopment: The relevance of microservices for customization and the increasing convergence of platforms into "platforms of platforms" or meta-organizations is explored. Data Monetization in B2B: The potential for companies to sell and leverage data, drawing parallels between B2B and B2C models with examples like smart cities and business analytics, is discussed. Physical Assets as Pivots for B2B Platforms: The idea that valuable physical assets owned by companies can serve as the core of B2B platforms, using the concept of "solution enabler platforms," is examined. Different types of B2B platforms based on control and decision rights, such as consortium platforms and algorithmic governance, are also introduced. Future Research Focus on AI and Platforms: Marin shares his current research interest in the application of AI in specific sectors like medical technology and how AI solutions interact with existing hospital systems and potentially aggregate on platforms. This episode's named a bit differently, because I owe a moral debt to the honorable and proud nation of Louxembourg. But it fits - as today we're looking at how Z-vatniks react to Trump's inauguration...and contrast it with the real situation on the ground. There's some brutal analysis by the Rusich group at the end as well.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/theeasternborder. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week, we read and discussed Eley and Blackbourn's indispensable discussion of the Sonderweg, or special path, of German history. It is often said that Germany's path to the Holocaust begins with the failure of the bourgeois revolution to take hold. This book posits a top-down Bonapartist "revolution" led by Otto von Bismarck which thoroughly bourgeoisified German society from the top to the bottom.Blackbourn, David, and Geoff Eley, The Peculiarities of German History: Bourgeois Society and Politics in Nineteenth-Century Germany (Oxford, 1984; Oxford Academic, 3 Oct. 2011)Send us a textSupport the show

Gio said they would. It's also Bobby Bonilla day. He gets paid $1.1 million every July 1 from the Mets. Nowadays there are tons of deferred contracts. We talked about Boomer's love of Precious Achiuwa. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about Boomer's psychotic behavior of pouring the ketchup on his fries instead of dipping the fries in ketchup. Boomer also thinks everyone puts mayonnaise on bacon, egg and cheese. We took a bunch of calls from people who eat weird food combinations. That was Jerry's update. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry's here to do an actual update and he starts with Chris Russo having a hard time saying ‘Barack Obama'. Paul George signed with the Sixers for the max.

"Quirkiness is a core value." In Season 7, Episode 1, we chat with Adam Moody, Jonathan Berk, and Benjamin Berk, the creators of The Ministry of Peculiarities in Azusa, California. Their first full-length game, Hope End, established their quirky brand of escape room, elegantly mixing story, puzzles, and adventure into one of Southern California's preeminent experiences. One of the reasons this company is so beloved is their commitment to immersion. In the podcast, they talk about how the storytelling begins the moment a guest clicks onto their website, and continues once they step foot into the lobby. There's a lot of off-beat humor woven into their experience. They've even got a few lobby “gags” and pranks, one of which David calls “obnoxiously compelling.” Hope End is the rare escape room that does a little bit of everything, and does it all extremely well. Whether it's the high production value found in their set design, props or video work, the intimate moments that stem from a great actor, or puzzles with a wow factor, The Ministry of Peculiarities has set an amazingly high bar for the escape room scene in Los Angeles. We loved getting a peek into the minds behind this unique blend of escape room and immersive theater. Scientists studying ecological and embodied cognition try to use algorithms as little as they can. Instead, they favor dynamical systems, typically represented as a set of equations that share variables in a way that is somewhat looplike: component A changes, which changes component B, which changes component A, and so on. Peculiarities of behavior can be explained as such systems reaching stable states. This episode describes two sets of equations that predict surprising properties of what seems to be intelligent behavior.Source:Anthony Chemero, Radical Embodied Cognitive Science, 2011Either mentioned or came this close to being mentionedJames Clerk Maxwell, "On Governors", 1868 (PDF)Andy Clark, Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again, 1997Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Embodied Cognition", 2020Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "The Computational Theory of Mind", 2021Wikipedia, "Dynamical Systems Theory"Nick Bostrom, "Letter from Utopia", 2008/20CreditsThe image is from Maxwell's "On Governors", showing the sort of equations "EEs" work with instead of code.

LJ's expertise lies in helping businesses and entrepreneurs close more deals and generate more revenue through effective sales strategies and techniques. Her company, Sales Closers, provides a wide range of services, including sales coaching, training, and consulting, that help her clients achieve their sales goals and grow their businesses. She hired and led virtual sales teams around the globe, to sell out multi-six and 7 figure launches. Check out the latest episode of our Conversational Selling podcast to learn more about LJ. In this episode, Nancy and LJ discuss the following:Why do people burn out in sales?LJ's person burnout story.Recruiting sales professionals and finding A players in sales: tips for interviewing the candidates. Why are some people really afraid of outsourcing?Peculiarities of the high-ticket closing sales cycle.Get control of the sales process.Importance of training outsourced salespeople internally. Key Takeaways: Whilst that was a hard period and a hard lesson to learn, I'm thankful for it, as it taught me how I didn't want to do things moving forward. When we are looking for A-Players, it's always character first and foremost what we're looking for.I kind of make a joke that if a salesperson is too good at interviews, that's a concern of mine.A surrendered sale is just the art of being present in the conversation and allowing it to flow from there. In the training team internally, we see that element of continual improvement and we believe that it's a skill to receive feedback and receive coaching. "And linking it back to what we said at the very start, I think sometimes as women as well, we're trying to balance all the things and spin all the plates at once, being a mom and a business owner and doing the sales, be a good wife. And we try and wear all these hats, and it's just not practical at all. We're just not very kind to ourselves and, my belief is that when we're in that, prospects aren't getting the best of us so we're not showing up in the best possible way, whether that be working for ourselves or whether it be working for in an employed role either way. If you're showing up at kind of... the gas tank is half full, then you're doing no one any favors at all. And that inevitably will come crashing down at some point if you don't listen to your body." – LJ "So, I think again, when it comes to higher ticket sales, what we're looking for as much as the sales experience is the life experience. So, when it comes to, you know, overturns, handling objections, that kind of thing. If someone doesn't really have it in the muscle or doesn't have the life experience to be able to connect with the prospect and understand where they're coming from, I think that's, it's quite difficult and we notice that in conversions. " – LJ “There's another nuance with surrendered sales for me as well. And that's in the sales conversation itself. It's like the art of being attached to the outcome and just being present in the conversation and trusting the flow of that conversation rather than trying to over-control and over-orchestrate what's going to happen next. It's, you know, this surrender is just the art of being present in the conversation and allowing it to flow from there.” – LJ Connect with LJ Sarkodee:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ljsarkodee/Sales Closers: https://www.salesclosers.com/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/ Connect with Nancy Calabrese: Twitter: https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website: https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com

The United States is the largest export market for Japanese sake. And for the last few decades, New York has been the key destination for sake outside Asia. Many sake brands first came there and only after that to Europe. A dedicated sake bar Decibel opened its doors in New York in 1993, almost 30 years before London got its first sake bar. So how does the sake scene in the United States and in New York in particular look like now? In this episode, I am talking to Timothy Sullivan, a Sake Samurai and a founder of the Urban Sake website and John Puma, who is probably the biggest sake geek in New York. And together they are Sake Revolution, the first American sake podcast, of which I am a big fan and even was a guest in episode 107. I love Tim's and John's podcast because it's always fun but also gives you tonnes of useful information about sake! Don't forget, Sugidama Podcast now has a sponsor, London Sake, an excellent online sake store. London Sake has one of the widest selections of premium and craft sake available online today. They deliver across the UK and Europe, and with over 100 sake from 25 breweries, there really is something for everyone.Using simple online tasting notes and sensible, affordable food pairings they help you find the perfect sake without any of the fuss. Alfred S. Posamentier's The Secret Lives of Numbers: Numerals and Their Peculiarities in Mathematics and Beyond (Prometheus Books, 2022) is the first book I've ever seen written by a mathematician that will absolutely, definitely, certainly appeal to people who love numbers and who don't love mathematics. I would urge all listeners to tell everyone they know who has a fascination with numbers to listen to this podcast, especially if they don't love mathematics because they will definitely love this book.
