Zapraszam do posłuchania! Zrealizowano w ramach stypendium Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego.

My guest this week is award-winning author Jordan Stratford, whose latest novel “La Maupin” is the second in his new Sword Girl historical YA series. “La Maupin” is based on the true story of 17-year old Julie d'Aubigny, known as La Maupin, who became an expert swordswoman, graverobber, arsonist, nun, assassin, wife, lover, and opera superstar, all before her 18th birthday. Jordan's telling is described as a blend of “French “Yé Yé” pop, 1980s Delacorta beach novella, and Luc Besson film.”In our talk, Jordan discusses what drew him to La Maupin, how he got into her mindset, how she was able to navigate so much in such a short time, and so much more. Show Notes: On this episode I talk to Little Deaths creator and Texas transplant - David Doub. David is the founder of Dusk Comics. His numerous publications include Dusk, Miss Tilney, Forever, Mystery Masque, and the upcoming Little Deaths. According to the interwebs, "La petite mort" (the little death), is an expression which means "the brief loss or weakening of consciousness" and in modern usage refers specifically to "the sensation of post orgasm as likened to death." The term "la petite mort" does not always apply to sexual experiences. It can also be used to describe a weakening or loss of consciousness, specifically in sleep, or when some undesired thing has happened to a person and has affected them so much that "a part of them dies inside." The Little Deaths we'll be investigating today is a 30 page full color historical fantasy adventure comic, written by David Doub and featuring art by Andrew Herman and Paul Maitland. It's based on the French historical figure Julie d'Aubigny (also known as known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin) who lived A LOT from (1670–1707). She was a duelist, popular opera singer, and apparently was not only known to dress like a man, but could kick the crap out of them in duels, too. She joined a nunnery to be with her girlfriend, and in an epic tale of body-snatching and arseny, burnt down the entire convent to escape her lover's overbearing father. She regularly beat trios of men in illegal duels and occasionally turned the men she stabbed through the shoulders into her side pieces. Julie d'Aubigny, also known as La Maupin and Mdsll Maupin, was a 17th century celebrity. She was bisexual, and a whirlwind of fencing, seduction, and arsony. I want a movie about her LIFE immediately. There are a few in French, but most of America doesn't seem to know about her and that is ridiculous to me. So we're changing that, as of right now.

There are tales in history that should be told in schools, bingo halls, and every night on the 5 o’clock news.  This tale is one of those. Richard discovered what could be the most fascinating woman on the face of the earth La Maupin.   Growing up in France during a time when women were not allowed to do much of anything, La Maupin decided to follow her own light.  She drank, cursed, and fought better than any man. We also learn that she was able to take care of the ladies better than most men.   The life of La Maupin was short but she lived more than enough lifetimes for the average person. Grave robbing, Singing, sword fighting, and burning down a Nun’s home?  Yep all that and more.   Give a listen to The Language of Bromance in Episode 255 Nun Of Your Business The La Maupin Story.
