Are you a victim of gas-lighting?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2017 14:27

Niche Radio — Gas-lighting is an effective form of emotional abuse that causes a victim to question their own feelings, instincts, and sanity and is generally carried out to give the perpetrator a sense of power and control over their victim. The term originally comes from the 1938 stage play Gas Light, in which a husband attempts to drive his wife crazy by dimming the lights which were powered by gas in their home and then denies it happened when his wife questions him. Even though the term has been around for a while, the term narcissism is more widely used. Chances are if you have been involved with a narcissist, you may well have been gas-lighted. The movie “The Girl on the Train” is a good example of this behaviour. Why do we have an Ego?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2017 19:00

Niche Radio — Our “Ego” is an identity of our own construction, an identity which is ‘not real’. If we take all the perceptions of what we are i.e. our beliefs about our personality, talents, and abilities – then we have the structure of our ego. It is reactive based on our past experiences or frame of references and plays and immense role in creating the emotional drama in our lives. The ego hides behind the “I” and “me” in the thoughts and statements we have about our identity (e.g. I’m not clever enough, pretty enough, capable etc). Every time we compare ourselves to external references (i.e people, situations or things) we are reinforcing or ego and the beliefs we have about ourselves. And where did these thoughts originate from? Well, our childhood. When we were kids, perhaps when we were teased on the playground or reprimanded or praised by a teacher or parent and this is where we started forming this perception of our ‘self’. As adults, we need to stop and take a reality check against our “Ego” which has served us a purpose up until now and that is to protect us and keep us safe by limiting ourselves. Listen to my latest podcast on understanding our “Ego”

Niche Radio — Relationships are challenging at the best of times but add extra complexities to that such as being bisexual, and it can get a lot more complicated. There is no particular lifestyle attached to bisexuality - bisexual people come in all shapes and sizes, from all sorts of occupations, and with all levels of education. Your sexual orientation does not determine who you are or what you do, however many people suffer discrimination or violence because of misperceptions and prejudice from people who are straight, gay, or lesbian. Most of these perceptions come from the ‘unknown’ in other words majority of us are afraid to ask questions to satisfy our curiosity and when we do this, we gain more insight and a deeper understanding of the topic and person(s) involved. This week I chat to Patrick who is black, male and bisexual to help us understand more about the world he lives in. You can follow me here: FaceBook Twitter Youtube Pinterest Google+ LinkedIn

Niche Radio — There is a common perception out there that men don’t talk about how they are feeling or what they are going through when faced with a challenging or trying time in their life. This predominantly comes from a childhood where men were conditioned from a young age that it was not ok for men to show emotion as it was considered ‘weak’ men are supposed to be ‘tough’ and ‘cowboys don’t cry’. Traditionally men would go to the pub for a few drinks or participate in a sport such as playing golf. Believe it or not, men do have feelings, they do feel hurt and they can feel overwhelmed at times and more and more men are starting to seek the necessary support and help to deal with the challenges they are facing. I asked a number of men what their views and perceptions are today when it comes to men expressing their feelings and emotions.
