And what does the end of Stephen Colbert's Late Show tell us about where late-night TV is going? Channel 4 has pulled Married at First Sight UK from streaming in the wake of sexual abuse allegations by former participants. Richard Osman and Marina Hyde unpick what this means for Channel 4, and whether the controversial format is too toxic to save. In this episode, we analyse what I consider to be the recent crisis communication missteps by the CEO of Channel 4 following serious allegations surrounding the reality television show Married at First Sight. We translate these real-world PR mistakes into actionable leadership lessons for your organisation. Listeners will learn why leaders must face journalists with honesty and empathy rather than turning their backs and walking away. We discuss the dangers of relying on safe, emotionless statements approved by HR and legal teams, and why true leadership requires pushing back to deliver a human, genuinely apologetic message that prioritises the welfare of the people involved. The episode also explores the broader responsibilities of a leader during a crisis. We cover the importance of recognising cultural shifts—such as the public turning against exploitative "cesspit" entertainment—and why leaders need to step back from constant firefighting to properly listen to their audience and staff. Finally, we examine the critical need for transparent safeguarding procedures. We break down a surprising comparison that reveals how a US adult film company provides significantly clearer, more accessible welfare and whistleblowing policies on its website than Channel 4's own production partners. Tune in to discover how to navigate PR disasters, prioritise human empathy, and implement public-facing safeguarding protocols that actually protect vulnerable people

Two women have told a BBC Panorama investigation they were raped during the filming of one of Channel 4's biggest shows, Married at First Sight UK, while a third has described an allegation of a non-consensual sex act. Channel 4 has now removed all episodes of the programme from its streaming and linear services and commissioned an external review of welfare on the show. The programme makers CPL have said its welfare system was ‘gold standard'. Nuala McGovern is joined by BBC News' Lizo Mzimba and Helen Wood, Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Aston in Birmingham. Many women live with fibromyalgia for life - chronic pain, exhaustion, brain fog - with no clear cure. But some doctors say that for women with breast implants, the story may be different. Rheumatology Professor Jan Willem Cohen Tervaer from the University of Alberta explains why some patients improve after their implants are removed, and why he believes the condition of Breast Implant Illness deserves recognition from the medical community. Nuala is also joined by Professor Lynda Wyld, President Elect of the Association of Breast Surgeons in the UK to explain the position currently held by the medical profession in the UK. We discuss a new play that unfolds entirely in the ladies loos. April Hope Miller wrote and performs in ‘Flush', it was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe and it's just opened at the Arcola Theatre in London. April and co-star Jazz Jenkins tell Nuala why the real drama on any night out is always to be found in the women's toilets. And why it took an ensemble cast of five, playing no less 16 different characters between them, to capture something universal about women's lives.School closures in England may be disproportionately affecting children with special educational needs and disabilities. File on Four Investigates has been looking into this in the run up to government reforms of the SEND system, and Nuala is joined by BBC education reporter and former primary school teacher Hayley Clarke. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Helen Fitzhenry

Channel 4 has said "very serious allegations of wrongdoing" including rape, have been made against a small number of past participants in the reality TV series, ‘Married at First Sight'.‘Married at First Sight' is a reality TV show where strangers start a marriage-like relationship with each other, meeting only minutes before the ceremony and then going on honeymoon and subsequently living with each other in an apartment, before ultimately deciding whether or not they will continue their relationship. In response to the allegations brought to light by the BBC, The UK government has said all the allegations must be investigated and that "there are consequences for criminality or wrongdoing". Channel 4 has also removed all previous seasons of the show from its streaming platforms.Dr. Jacob Johanssen is an Associate Professor of Communications at St. Mary's University London, and joins Shane to discuss…If you have been affected by anything you have heard, help is available. We’re breaking down the chaotic Married at First Sight reunion, and if you thought the finale was dramatic, nothing could prepare us for the secret audio that caught one groom’s terrifying true colours. This week, the scorecard for the season was officially tallied - and with only one couple walking in together, we need to talk about why this year felt like an exercise in public humiliation for the women involved.Plus we discuss the fallout from the Danny/Steph/Bec triangle. We’re dissecting the story they told about those leaked bikini photos and how that aggressive off-camera audio proves why this groom might be one of the most manipulative contestants the show has ever seen.Plus, we’re unpacking the logic behind Steven’s "seasonal" approach to romance (spoiler: there is none) and hear why his pathetic excuses had us feeling "broken but hopeful" for the end of the season.Love binge-watching TV? The Married at First Sight Australia Season 13 finale has arrived and it did NOT disappoint! In this full recap of Episodes 36 & 37, we break down the explosive Final Dinner Party (Gia makes a shocking return, Scott finally snaps, reads her a savage letter, throws his ring and storms out) and the emotional Final Vows.Stella & Filip deliver the fairytale ending with a surprise proposal, while chaos reigns elsewhere: Danny brutally rejects Bec, David walks out mid-vows leaving Alissa talking to an empty chair, and Rachel & Steven give a confusing “yes”. From ring throws and savage call-outs to one beautiful proposal, we cover every jaw-dropping moment of the MAFS AU 2026 grand finale.Who survived? Who got humbled? And who got their happy ending? Find out in this must-listen season finale recap!
On the show today, we’re breaking down the two-part finale of Married at First Sight Australia, and even if you think you’ve seen it all, you are going to want to hear about the secret footage that didn’t make the final edit. This week we saw the rise of the "out-victim the victim" strategy and a dinner party that felt more like a scripted movie than reality, and we need to talk about the fallout from Gia and Scott’s explosive exit.Plus, the aftermath of the final vows was brutal, with one groom delivering a mic-drop line that left us cheering and his bride flailing. We need to explain why Bec’s "delulu" behaviour in the forest had us screaming at the screen and what "cross-pollination" means for the upcoming reunion. Love binge-watching TV? We played a secret sound that had everyone convinced it was from "the hub" or Married At First Sight's intimacy week, but it was actually just the Los Angeles Marathon commentary of a woman losing her absolute mind screaming "WHOA! OH MY GOD!" over and over during a close finish—and we couldn't stop laughing because it sounded exactly like a When Harry Met Sally situation on free-to-air TV.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this Trawl, Jemma and Marina coin a new state of being (“fucktioning”) before diving headfirst into a world that feels increasingly unhinged. From a tribute to Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling, to the unbearable reality of injustice in Gaza and a horrific story about a little baby boy who was tortured by members of the IDF, the emotional whiplash is real. There's rage, grief and a necessary pause to cling onto moments of good, because honestly, what's the alternative?Meanwhile, in The New World, Alan Rusbridger dissects how Ofcom has become slow, cautious and dangerously easy to outmanoeuvre while broadcasters push further into partisan territory without consequence. Jemma and Marina wonder, if the rules exist but no one enforces them… are they rules at all?Add in political grifters, media double standards, and a system that increasingly looks like it's shrugging rather than safeguarding and you're left with a question. Is this incompetence… or quiet permission? To sign the petition relating to the Media Sovereignty act, click here: https://mediasovereignty.org/petition/Thank you for sharing and please do follow us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcast Patreonhttps://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcast Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@TheTrawl Twitterhttps://twitter.com/TheTrawlPodcastIf you've even mildly enjoyed The Trawl, you'll love the unfiltered, no-holds-barred extras from Jemma & Marina over on Patreon, including:• Exclusive episodes of The Trawl Goss – where Jemma and Marina spill backstage gossip, dive into their personal lives, and often forget the mic is on• Early access to The Trawl Meets…• Glorious ad-free episodesPlus, there's a bell-free community of over 3,300 legends sparking brilliant chat. And it's your way to support the pod which the ladies pour their hearts, souls (and occasional anxiety) into. We’re nearing the end of Married At First Sight and a week of home visits have caused fresh drama for these fake married couples. From a pillow that could have exposed a cheating scandal, to a fishing trip we found oddly romantic and the most awkward car ride and break-up we’ve ever witnessed, it’s time to unpack all the drama and (unintentionally) hilarious moments from this week. Then it’s on to the dinner party, and boy, is there one doozy of a fight that we need to discuss that highlights one of the biggest issues with dating straight men in 2026.Love binge-watching TV? It’s all anyone’s talking about: petrol. How much it’s costing, how much there is to go around and how much worse are things going to get? Is the panic caused by this consequence of war in the Middle East warranted, considering the humanitarian crisis unfolding at the same time? And how do we keep our cool, particularly those of us in regional areas where public transport is a myth? Plus, Sarah Ferguson has been caught up in a controversy that is, frankly, bizarre even for the royals: she’s been approached to clone and sell Queen Elizabeth's corgis for a reality TV show. Is cloning the late Queen’s pets the ultimate side hustle or a bridge too far? In other business, noughties fashion icon Rachel Zoe is back in the algorithm, and she’s hard launching her 'divorce era' on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Is the 'Hot Divorcee' trope actually the most empowering thing on TV right now? And, we remember Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling, who has passed away at 54. Her 'Why Not?' attitude and her work raising awareness of colon cancer is a legacy we’re holding close today. As Mel was passionate about telling busy women: If something doesn't feel right, please, get it checked out. SUBSCRIBERS:Get 25% off Nala with your Mamamia subscription. Click here to get your code. It’s that glorious time of the week… yes, we’re back in the Married At First Sight trenches.Today, we’re unpacking the text message scandal that refuses to die, the dinner party confrontation that changed everything, and the couple we were all rooting for who may have just completely fallen apart. Plus, we get into the relationship that feels more fake by the minute — and why one cast member might have finally gone too far.But first, there’s a brand new trailer for one of the biggest movie franchises in the world, which leads us into a very important chat about Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and why being a Hollywood golden boy can survive almost anything.Listen to The Spill New episodes drop every Monday–Friday!Mamamia: https://www.mamamia.com.au/podcasts/the-spill/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3mjNFVvJp1irXNVxKXXABOApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-spill/id1473523403Follow The Spill:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thespillpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thespillpodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thespillpodcast/Read all the latest entertainment news on Mamamia: https://mamamia.com.au/entertainment/Support Independent Women’s Media:https://www.mamamia.com.au/subscribe/Your subscription helps us continue to tell the stories that matter to women.Want to join the conversation?Have feedback or a topic you want us to discuss? First up, Ed Sheeran joined Benny Blanco on his podcast for a brutally honest conversation about being “normal looking guys” in an industry full of heart-throbs.Then… we need to talk about MAFS. This week’s couples retreat was meant to be romantic, but instead delivered one of the most chaotic storylines of the entire season. From explosive fights and shifting alliances to a very awkward intimacy revelation that dominated multiple episodes, we’re unpacking the moment everyone’s talking about — and why the fallout has completely split the group.Plus, we unpack the couple who finally left the experiment (and why viewers were relieved), the “I love you” moment that didn’t quite land and the shocking teaser that suggests next week could expose secret messages between the brides.THE END BITSLove binge-watching TV? We played a secret sound that had everyone convinced it was from "the hub" or Married At First Sight's intimacy week, but it was actually just the Los Angeles Marathon commentary of a woman losing her absolute mind screaming "WHOA! OH MY GOD!" over and over during a close finish—and we couldn't stop laughing because it sounded exactly like a When Harry Met Sally situation on free-to-air TV.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
NEWS WEAKLY 204 – Married At First Strike, Melbourne Saves Australia, and the Geography PoliceEpisode SummaryMissiles fly, oil markets panic, reality television becomes a geopolitical framework, and Queensland decides the best way to fight hate is by outlawing metaphors about rivers. This week, News Weakly explains the escalating Iran–Israel–US conflict using the only analytical tool Australians truly understand: Married At First Sight. Meanwhile, Australia may already be involved in the war in the most Australian way possible, Melbourne accidentally saves the nation from three more decades of commercial radio brain rot, the federal government discovers “social cohesion” is harder than it sounds, and Queensland enters the bold new frontier of criminalising specific slogans. It's geopolitics, media collapse, diaspora politics, and the strange ways governments try to regulate speech, all punched in the headlines weakly.Top Stories of the WeekMarried At First Strike: Iran, Israel, America and the Middle East Dinner PartyMissiles, air strikes, Khamenei's death, regional militias circling, and oil markets panicking. Why the current escalation looks less like careful diplomacy and more like the most explosive MAFS dinner party ever broadcast.Melbourne Saves AustraliaAfter nearly three decades of scandal, humiliation and cultural decline on breakfast radio, the Kyle and Jackie O empire finally hits a wall. Not because of regulators, outrage or consequences. Because Melbourne changed the station.Social Cohesion, Australian StyleThe federal government cancels funding for a Shia community centre after reports it mourned Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The political logic might make sense in Canberra, but the way it will be heard across Muslim communities is another story entirely. From the River to the Sea… or the Lake to the Bay?Queensland passes sweeping hate speech laws banning specific protest slogans. A legal innovation that raises an important question: if metaphors about rivers are illegal, what exactly counts as a body of water?Quote of the Week“Nothing says ‘we're not involved in the war' quite like Australian sailors possibly helping fire the torpedo.”Support the ShowIf you enjoy News Weakly and want to support the show, head over to Patreon at patreon.com/samishah. The original Scary Movie cast is officially back, and we’re unpacking why this reboot is the elder millennial nostalgia hit we didn't know we needed. From Anna Faris and Regina Hall returning to their iconic roles to the Wayans brothers reclaiming the franchise, we break down the "past my prime" narrative that previously sidelined these stars. Then, we have to talk about Married At First Sight Australia. Between a resurfaced video of Joel drumming with sex toys and the "vicious" dinner party showdown over his childhood teddy bear, the experiment has reached a whole new level of chaos. We’re debating whether Juliet’s reaction was a proportionate response or a total overreaction, and why the "Bear-gate" debate is currently taking over every group chat in the country. Is it a sign of a “quirky star" trying too hard, or are we just witnessing the most bizarre deal-breaker in reality TV history? Is Nicolas Cage's performance the ultimate embodiment of this eras psychological dread? From Buckingham Palace dinner invites to the politician correspondence, we analyze the "client list" reality that mainstream media is still trying to redact. *Correction Naomi Campbell (Model) I meant not Aussie Actress. • MAFS Australia 2026: The Brook Crompton Nuclear Blow-up: We analyze the "villain arc" of the century. Today, if you’re an Australian with even a drop of British or Irish blood, Amelia has a warning that might cost you hundreds of dollars. And, is it okay for celebrities to ask us for money? After the deaths of millennial TV icons James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane, their families have started GoFundMe campaigns — and not everyone’s happy about it. Holly, Jessie, and Amelia have very different takes on whether it’s okay to solicit for donations when you live on a multi-million dollar ranch. Also, the new Married At First Sight villain,Tyson has landed. Jessie thinks his quest for a 'submissive' woman and his 'manosphere' vibes reflect what women are dealing with out in the dating world. While Holly‘s pearls are clutched about the podcast he’s doubtless going to start when he leaves the show. So, ‘should’ this man be on primetime TV? Plus, a listener dilemma we can’t stop talking about. Vanessa is overwhelmed, over-worked, and considering quitting her job because her husband’s 'big career' has left her doing 100 percent of the heavy-lifting at home. Jessie says "life is long, just quit," while Holly is asking: if every woman is making the 'choice' to scale back, is it actually a choice at all?Plus, we deep dive into PHAARC — the probably not real (but very relatable) 'medical' condition currently ruining your work life. If Barack Obama says there are aliens, then there are aliens. While the former President is busy clarifying that he didn't actually see any ETs in the Oval Office, Jessie Stephens has a theory: Is men’s obsession with outer space just a symptom of not having enough mental load? Plus, the political "pub test" is officially dead, and the "algorithm test" has moved in and made itself comfortable. We’re looking at why the Internet is both the world’s best fact-checker and its most dangerous bias-confirmer. And Holly Wainwright is asking, what IS the actual pub test in 2026? And because we clearly haven't done enough critical thinking, we’re wading into the chaos of Married At First Sight. Jessie, of course, is an expert in the field, and she’s bringing several philosophical questions from the new season, starting with: Can you ever come back from a sexual chemistry deficit? In other business, apparently, humans "fall off a cliff" at age 44, which is sending Amelia Lester into a spiral.
