September 30, 1972 Roberto Clemente doubles off the Mets' Jon Matlack to become the eleventh major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. On hand for the event was Clemente's hero, Willie Mays, now a New York Met, who called Clemente "The Greatest". Sealing the mutual admiration Clemente was quoted saying ""Willie Mays is the greatest player I've ever seen. I never saw Joe DiMaggio play, but if Joe DiMaggio was better than Willie Mays, he belongs in heaven." Sadly, the Pirate right fielder's 3000th hit would be his last, as he would die on New Year's Eve in a plane crash while attempting to bring relief aid to earthquake-stricken Managua, Nicaragua.September 30, 1945 Hank Greenberg hits a pennant-winning grand slam on the final day of the season. The Tiger left fielder's ninth-inning 4 run bomb beats the Browns 6 - 3 clinching the American League flag for Detroit over the second-place Senators.September 30, 1962 Willie Mays' 47th home run, an 8th-inning blast off Dick Farrell, leads the Giants to a critical 2 - 1 win. They would all stay in the clubhouse after the win to hear the results of the Dodger game. The season would end in a tie which required a three game playoff to settle the pennant in the Giants favor.September 30, 1999 The largest regular-season crowd in Candlestick Park history, 61,389 fans, watch the Dodgers beat the home team 9 - 4 in the last baseball game to ever be played at the 'Point'. Giant greats help mark the occasion with Juan Marichal tossing out the ceremonial first pitch before the game and Willie Mays throwing out the ballpark's final pitch after the game.

I've been wanting to do a Freestyle mixtape for a while now. I have cool memories of this music booming out of little Suzuki Samurais and Honda Civics in the late '80s during family vacations to the East and West Coasts. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of archived radio DJ mixes from the late '80s and was inspired to pull together some tasty Rap, Freestyle, Electro, Post-Disco, and House for this tape. I only recently became aware of the original version of 'Show Me Love' and found an unopened copy on Discogs, so the version at the end of this set is a genuine needle drop. A brief introduction to the Freestyle genre: Emerging in the early 1980s in the United States and originating in the urban Latino communities of New York City and Miami, Freestyle was characterized by a blend of synthesizer and drum-heavy electronic beats, Latin percussion, and emotive, often dramatic singing. Notable artists include Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Stevie B, and Exposé. Internationally, the impact of Freestyle was more nuanced. In Europe, while synth-pop, new wave, and house music were more dominant, elements of Freestyle influenced the emerging Eurodance scene. Meanwhile, in Japan, Freestyle was overshadowed by genres like J-Pop and city pop, along with various other forms of Western music. While its core fanbase resided in cities like New York and Miami, Freestyle's popularity was embraced in club scenes nationwide and received considerable radio play, particularly on urban contemporary, dance, and R&B stations during its peak in the late 1980s. This era marked the height of Freestyle's run in the charts with songs like 'Fascinated' by Company B, 'Crush on You' by The Jets, 'Point of No Return' by Exposé, 'Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)' by Samantha Fox, and 'Tell It to My Heart' by Taylor Dayne. Freestyle's influence persisted into the early '90s, notably in Eurodance with international hit songs like 'Rhythm of the Night' by Corona and 'Be My Lover' by La Bouche, which exhibited similarly catchy choruses and uptempo rhythms, but with much denser and slicker production. While in the Latin music scene, especially in the early to mid-1990s, Latin Freestyle, a subgenre, saw artists like Selena infusing traditional Latin sounds with Freestyle's electronic beats and rhythms. Freestyle remains a distinctive and memorable part of 1980s music culture, representing a unique fusion of sounds that captured the energy and diversity of its era. "I think you could certainly make the case that creativity has been useful for a long time in human evolution and probably in our pre-human ancestors as well. So it's not surprising that that creativity is manifest in all kinds of ways from building a trap to catch a critter, to musical improvisation, to making a sculpture. If I were to look at a brain scan and someone said, 'Point to me the region that has the sense of self.' I don't know that I could actually do that. So in other words, I accept this notion as a higher-level explanation that can be really useful. I would say our ability to reduce that to brain regions and brain activities now is still really not there. I'm not saying it will never be there. It may emerge, but it hasn't emerged yet. Sense of self is a really, really interesting idea and it's something that fascinates me because it is used both kind of at a very high level, in a cognitive way, but neuroscientists think of sense of self more in terms of our senses that literally point inward. So when we think about the senses, we usually think about things like touch or vision or taste or smell or hearing that are designed to tell us, not about our own bodies, but about the external world. But we also have all these senses that are interoceptive rather than exteroceptive. And they're telling me things like, how is my head oriented relative to gravity? That's my balanced vestibular system. Where are my limbs in space at this moment that I can do, even with my eyes closed? I know where my arm is even with my eyes closed because I'm getting information from my muscles that is being sent to my brain. I know how distended my bladder is and whether I'm going to need to go to the bathroom soon. I know my immune state, my breathing, my blood chemistry, my digestion. All of these things are senses of self and the degree to which they influence higher cognitive processes is to me one of the really fascinating questions of neuroscience right now and one that we're just really starting to understand."David J. The Democratic president was to address his latest efforts to curb gun violence in a speech in this suburban Los Angeles community, where a gunman stormed a dance hall and shot 20 people, killing 11, following a Lunar New Year celebration in January. He was also meeting with families of victims and with first responders from that day. Biden’s rhetoric has grown ever stronger about guns — he routinely calls for banning assault weapons — in pushing a vocal gun-control platform even tougher than during the Obama administration when he was vice president. He has been emboldened by the midterm electiions when his regular talk of gun control didn't result in massive losses, and he's expected to continue to argue for strong changes as he inches toward a 2024 reelection run, his aides say. Biden was greeted at the Los Angeles airport Tuesday by Brandon Tsay, the 26-year-old who wrestled the semiautomatic pistol away from the gunman in Monterey Park. The two shook hands; Biden had invited Tsay to his State of the Union address in January where he praised the young man's heroism. But the president has only limited power on guns to go beyond bipartisan legislation passed by Congress last summer after the killings last year of 10 shoppers at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store and 19 students and two teachers at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school. Tuesday's action does not change U.S. government policy. Rather, it directs federal agencies to ensure compliance with existing laws and procedures — a typical feature of executive orders issued by presidents when they confront the limits of their own power to act without cooperation from Congress. Biden, in the order, acknowledged Congress' opposition, but said, “In the meantime, my administration will continue to do all that we can, within existing authority, to make our communities safer.” The order directs the Cabinet to work on a plan to better structure the government to support communities suffering from gun violence. The plan calls on Attorney General Merrick Garland to shore up the rules for federally licensed gun dealers so they know they are required to do background checks as part of the license. Biden is also mandating better reporting of ballistics data from federal law enforcement for a clearinghouse that allows federal, state and local law enforcement to match shell casings to guns. But local and state law enforcement agencies are not required to report ballistics data, and many do not, making the clearinghouse less effective. And the president is asking the Federal Trade Commission to issue a public report analyzing how gun manufacturers market to minors and use military images to market to the general public. The bill passed last year, known as the Safer Communities Act, is viewed by gun control advocates as a good start but one that doesn't go far enough. After the law was signed, there were 11 other mass shootings, according to a database of mass killings since 2006 maintained by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University. Those killings don't include shootings in which fewer than four people were killed — and gun violence is also rising nationwide. Pro-gun groups said the order would do little to stop growing gun violence. “The reality is that nothing in the president’s executive order today would have done anything to prevent the recent mass shootings in California, Michigan or elsewhere,” said Katie Pointer Baney who is the Managing Director of Government Affairs for the U.S. Concealed Carry Association. “It’s time for the president and political leaders across the country to have an honest conversation with the American people and acknowledge there is no legislative fix that will permanently solve the issue of gun violence.” Biden will also direct his Cabinet to make sure law enforcement agencies understand the benefits of the new law, particularly around red-flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders, which are intended to temporarily remove guns from people with potentially violent behavior and prevent them from hurting themselves or others. Last month, the Justice Department sent out more than $200 million to help states and the District of Columbia administer red-flag laws and other crisis-intervention programs. https://dailycaller.com/2023/03/14/desantis-admin-liquor-license-sexually-explicit/ DeSantis Admin Moves To Revoke Liquor License From Hotel That Hosted Sexually Explicit Show For Kids Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is moving to revoke a hotel’s liquor license after it ignored a warning and proceeded to host a sexually explicit show with children present, according to a Tuesday administrative complaint. On Dec. 27, the Hyatt Regency Miami hosted “A Drag Queen Christmas” advertised for “all ages” where performers allegedly wore “sexually suggestive clothing” and “prosthetic female genitalia” while displaying “simulated sexual activity” in front of children, according to an administrative complaint. Prior to the show, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation warned the hotel it would lose its liquor license unless the venue ensured that children were not permitted at the event. Under Florida law, sexual organs cannot be exposed in public in a vulgar or indecent manner and obscene content cannot be shown to minors, the complaint stated. Violation of the law can result in the loss of a license for the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. “On December 27, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation warned the Hyatt Regency Miami against hosting a sexually explicit show with children present,” Griffin told the DCNF. “The venue proceeded with their plans and, according to an investigation by the Department, the venue (Respondent in the complaint) violated Florida statutes as outlined in the attached complaint.” https://thepostmillennial.com/zuckerberg-sacks-10000-more-meta-workers-during-year-of-efficiency?utm_campaign=64487 Zuckerberg sacks 10,000 more Meta workers during 'Year of Efficiency' On Tuesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the tech giant would be laying off around 10,000 workers, with some set to find out whether or not they still have a job as early as tomorrow. The move is just the latest in Zuckerberg's quest to make 2023 the "Year of Efficiency" as he and other top executives work to restructure the company. Tech groups, he added, would find out in late April, with those in business groups being informed in late May. Zuckerberg noted that in certain cases, such as for those on international teams, layoffs could take until the end of the year to be finalized. "Overall," he said, "we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven't yet hired." Zuckerberg justified the decision by explaining that "every layer of a hierarchy adds latency and risk aversion in information flow and decision-making," thus a "flatter" organization would be faster and more capable of creating, maintaining, and delivering the products and services customers want. "People will be more productive, and their work will be more fun and fulfilling," he said. "We will become an even greater magnet for the most talented people. That’s why in our Year of Efficiency, we are focused on canceling projects that are duplicative or lower priority and making every organization as lean as possible." The latest round of layoffs come just months after Meta reduced its workforce by around 11,000 workers, or 13 percent of the workforce. https://redstate.com/kiradavis/2023/03/13/point-of-no-return-nyc-in-policing-crisis-as-resignations-reach-record-numbers-n715750 'Point of No Return': NYC in Policing Crisis as Resignations Reach Record Numbers As Democrat-run cities across America continue to descend into criminal chaos, the nation’s largest city is hemorrhaging police officers. In an exclusive story last week, The New York Post published data that shows New York City (NYC) police officers are resigning from their duties at a shocking rate. Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch called it a “staffing emergency” that is “approaching the point of no return.” The statistics show a 117% increase in retiring officers since 2021. The shocking stats show 239 officers tapped out in January and February, a 36% spike from the 176 who fled in the same period last year and a disturbing 117% jump from the 110 in 2021, NYPD pension data show. That’s the highest number of resignations for the first two months of a year since 250 members quit in 2007 during a contentious contract dispute. According to the report, there seem to be a number of converging factors contributing to the massive loss of personnel in the Big Apple. The Black Lives Matter-led movement to defund police departments across the country has almost certainly created a combination of shrinking budgets to retain employees and a strain on remaining resources. However, corruption and poor management also seems to be a debilitating issue. A veteran Manhattan police officer told the Post that precinct cops have to work “an inhumane amount of overtime” that often includes their days off. At the same time, they are penalized by department bureaucrats for small breaches of uniform and/or administrative protocol. Meanwhile, some officers are being protected from necessary patrol duties by “high-ranking supervisors.” NYPD officers are fleeing to places like Florida, or suburban locations in New York and Connecticut. As the cost of living in NYC sky-rockets, pay remains stagnant. There is also the rapidly declining quality of life. Prolonged school closures, COVID vaccine mandates and unnecessary masking of small children has led to a learning crisis in government schools. A notoriously ‘woke’ agenda in those same schools has also begun to affect testing levels and education outcomes. Rampant homelessness and open-air drug use make for unsafe streets and public transportation. According the report from The New York Post, 262 city cops retired in just the first two months of 2023, a 3% increase in retirements in the same time period last year. Perhaps the most alarming number uncovered in the report reveals that the NYPD lost 3701 officers in 2022 alone. It is the largest number of officers lost since 2002, following the 9/11 attacks. That year the city lost 3,846 police officers. Things don’t seem to be looking up any time soon. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearm industry trade association, sales of firearms surpassed 1.3 million units in February – even with fewer days on the calendar. Moreover, sales had declined just 0.6 percent compared to February 2022 – based on NSSF-adjusted data from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Though not a direct correlation to gun sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide an additional picture of current market conditions. February was the 43rd month in a row to see gun sales exceed a million units. Last week, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover announced they would pause their plan to implement a new merchant category code for the nation’s gun retailers after political pressure from Republicans, CNN reported. https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2023/03/13/after-resigning-over-bible-quote-texas-tech-settles-for-4-1m-payout-for-coach-mark-adams/ After Resigning Over Bible Quote, Texas Tech Settles for $4.1M Payout for Coach Mark Adams Now former Texas Tech basketball coach Mark Adams and the university have come to terms with a $4.1 million payout after Adams resigned for using a Bible quote about slaves and masters during a training session with a student. The Red Raiders coach resigned after using a Bible quote, Ephesians, 6:5-9, to encourage a player during a training session. The passage begins, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.” It is not known if Adams actually used the word “slaves” when he quoted the verse, but it was quickly deemed offensive, and the school suspended him for using it as a training tool. Adams seemed to feel it was not a big deal and that it was all blown up out of proportion. He was suspended, regardless. But, despite that the school said he apologized, he later contradicted that and said he did not apologize. Ultimately, Adams resigned only a few days after the incident was first reported. The Bible quote was not the only issue Adams was facing with school officials. He was also accused of spitting on a player, but he fully denied that claim. Whatever the veracity of the accusations against him, Adams and Texas Tech have now settled on his separation package. The school has agreed to pay Adams $4.1 million in thirty days. The payout will include all bonuses and salaries earned during the fiscal year. The two also agreed to forego any legal actions over the incident and to hold each other blameless going forward. “Adams hereby agrees to the release of any and all claims against TTU and Texas Tech University System and their employees, appointees, regents and representatives relating to his employment, whether known or unknown, as of the date of this Agreement and TTU agrees to release any and all claims against Adams,” the school’s settlement reads, according to USA Today. “This Agreement is not, and shall not in any way be construed, as an admission by the Parties of wrongdoing whatsoever against each other or that the Parties violated any federal, state or local law, which both Parties deny,” the statement added.

Point Blank (1967) Review Way back on episode 126 of the Sordid Cinema Podcast, we reviewed John Boorman’s gritty, raw crime drama Point Blank, featuring superb performances by Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson. The 1967 thriller combines elements of film noir with stylistic touches of the European nouvelle vague and features a fractured timeline (similar to the novel’s non-linear structure), disconcerting narrative rhythms, and a carefully calculated use of film space. Discussing the film is Ricky D, Simon Howell and former co-host, Ali McKinnon.

This episode has Timotheus Vermeulen analyzing opposing positions: Where Cassirer believes that his point of view projects the horizon; Heidegger believes that we are thrown into a horizon, which means the horizon is there before us or rather, in his terms, with us. A series of chapters from Disputaziuns Susch, an annual conference scheme hosted by Art Stations Foundation CH and Grazyna Kulczyk. In spring 1929, just a glimpse before the Great Depression and the Great Crash to come soon, the Cassirer-Heidegger debate takes place in Davos; Ernst Cassirer pulls his arguments for a broader conception of humanity, his counterpart is Martin Heidegger and his relativism. The quest of a universal truth drives a ‘continental divide’ (Peter E. Gordon) or ‘Weggabelung der Philosophie’ (Henning Ritter), anticipating major philosophical debates to come. 90 years ahead, in Susch, 40 minutes away from Davos, once again in times of disorientation, disillusion, with radical movements on the rise, we were repeating the question that led the historical debate: What is it to be human?

Why does someone want to place a moment on their skin? Something that will always be there, reminding them of an event, a person, or even a thought. Listen as Deborah Pfingston and Tony Carey discuss what they know from their different sides of the tattoo. Episode Two is all about the history. Tattooing actually has a very long history, so Deborah and Tony just skim the surface. Plus, there are many different styles of tattooing too :). Tony mentions a friend, Fade FX, who is a world renowned tattoo artist. She traveled deep into the jungles of Borneo to meet the last tattooed head hunters of the Iban tribe. Check out her documentary: 'Point of No Return. Hand tapped tattooing in Borneo' @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIPMkmmJRG4 . It has been the summer of Disney when it comes to the big blockbusters and we review a huge one this week in the adaptation of animated classic in The Lion King. We also look at two Netflix originals in the buddy action flick starring Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo in Point Blank and then a Taiwanese sci-fi dystopian thriller meets crime noir in Cities of Last Things. We also talk about how modern film journalism has caused movies to be seen more as product than art, and we look at if it is harmful that Netflix is currently obsessed with creating as many original movies as possible. As always, we had a great time recording this show and we really hope you love it. If you do, then please help us out by spreading the word to other movie fans.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).Four Star Movie Rating:Point Blank ** (CS) & *** (SM)The Lion King **½ (CS)Cities of Last Things *** (CS & SM)The Summer Box Office Challenge Draft Picks:Scott:1. Should I buy an Annuity or Approved Retirement Fund (ARF)? Unless we are retiring from a defined benefit (DB) pension scheme we will have this decision to make in regards how to access our pension benefits. Once we take out tax free lump sum we will have this decision to make with the balance. It is a big decision with multiple complexities involved, both financial and emotional. Do I want the predictable route or do I want the less predictable but potentially more lucrative route? Do I want the peace of mind knowing that I'll get €x every month for the rest of my days, or do I want the potential to get more every month and potentially leave a legacy? Do I want a piggy-back down Everest or do I want to navigate it on my own two feet? That last sentence might seem odd but bear with me. Before I outline the considerations I believe we should make before deciding on annuity or ARF, I want to put this decision in a little context. I was speaking at a recent 'Point of Retirement' event in Croke Park. As part of my piece I compared managing one's income in retirement to climbing and descending Everest. I made the comparison that when we are in 'accumulation' phase of building and preparing for leaving full-time work we are on the 'ascent' of the mountain. We reach the peak at the time we depart full time employment - however as anyone who has ever climbed a mountain will confirm - the descent is far from easy. One stumble and it could be damaging or indeed fatal. This is a much lesser risk when we are ascending, a fall or stumble has a much lesser probability of significantly screwing-up our accumulation plan. While some could argue it is slightly dramatic, I do believe that managing our income in retirement is very similar to ascending and then descending Everest. Given the potential dangers, the impact of a stumble financially, and the significant importance of staying on track draws many comparisons. One of the attendees at the session sent me a link that very night, which was breaking news of the Irish climber who had unfortunately gone missing on the descent of Everest, only for another Irish climber to be confirmed dead a week later, again on the descent. It was obviously a pure (and really awful) coincidence but it surely hammered home the point about the dangers of descending, or in this situation, of navigating our 'spending phase'. Paddy Delaney

'Point of Light' What to say about this episode...the Two Dads have some thoughts. Did you think it was a little clunky? Did it feel like it was one of those "in between" episodes that is just decent enough to carry us all to the next major plot revelation? The Two Dads have some thoughts about this. There were a lot of reveals in this episode that were awesome, some great cannon additions, along with some easter eggs (we are looking at you, House of Mogh!). Join the Dads as they break this episode down and prepare you for what we hope is a spectacular 4th episode. Plus we may squeeze in a few dad jokes. As always thanks for the listen and we apologize up front for Corey's creepy opening.

This is a back plot episode, meaning the main story arc of the series is demoted in importance so as to emphasize different characters and subplots. Specifically, ‘Point of Light’ covers three storylines: 1) Amanda and Michael’s inquiry into Spock and his whereabouts; 2) Chancellor L’Rell and her hold on The Klingon Empire; and 3) Tilly’s visions of her dead friend May and the fear she’s losing her mind. Although, not as exciting as the two previous episodes, the episode offered important developments in story and character that will pay off benefits in future episodes.

This week we've got writer and director Shaz Bennett on the program to talk about Kathryn Bigelow's classic, Point Break. As Shaz says on the show, this is the movie she most wishes she had directed. She and April also discuss Shaz's newest film, Alaska Is a Drag, which follows an aspiring drag queen turned boxer stuck working at a cannery in Alaska. The two of them dissect the masterful directing of Bigelow during the visceral chase scenes. They look at the unconventional casting of Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. They praise the performance and genius of Lori Petty. And Shaz elaborates on being yourself while directing, and being close to your actors on set. April has a special connection with this film as well, having written a retrospectivefor Rolling Stone last year. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch Point Break. With April Wolfe with Shaz Bennett. A super-premium ice cream brand that got its start slinging sweet treats out of a repurposed, beat-up postal van, Coolhaus is changing the perception of frozen pints, one scoop at a time. Known for its off-beat style and inventive, indulgent flavors -- think Fried Chicken & Waffles and Balsamic Fig -- Coolhaus is certainly not your father’s ice cream. But it’s not for him. Lauded by food critics and adored by celebrities and social influencers who’ve championed the Los Angeles-based brand since its 2009 launch, co-founder and CEO Natasha Case sees Coolhaus as "the signature millennial ice cream brand." In an interview included in this week’s episode of Taste Radio, Case explained the her belief that Coolhaus, which is represented at thousands of grocery retailers across the U.S. and is sold at company-owned stores and food trucks in Southern California, New York City, and Dallas, has made its mark by positioning the brand as a “point of view and a culture.” “The ice cream is our outlet,” she said. “The ice cream is our canvas for cool ideas.” Also included in this episode: A conversation with Trevor Smith, who’s the co-founder of cold-brew beverage brand Secret Squirrel. Starting as a side hustle selling cold brew coffee at farmers markets in L.A., the brand has since emerged at national retailers, including Target. Smith shared lessons from his entrepreneurial journey, from his time with the U.S. Army through to the sale of Secret Squirrel in 2016. And in this week’s edition of Elevator Talk, we hear from Eduardo Pentagna, the CEO and Master Brewer of Brazilian-inspired beer brand Novo Brazil. Show notes: 1:45: Review Taste Radio! -- Please do us a solid and review us on iTunes. It’ll improve our search rankings on the app and help other folks find Taste Radio. It’s a pretty simple process and will take about 2-4 minutes. Thanks! 3:15: That Sh_t is The Bomb, Yo -- Much of the Eastern U.S., including our beloved home of Watertown, Mass., has been recovering from a brutal storm aptly dubbed a “bomb cyclone.” It’s not a good thing. But while snow and ice ain’t our bomb, good food and drinks are. The hosts kick off the episode with a discussion about libations and snacks, including Olivious Daily Olive Oil Shot, GT’s Kombucha Pure Love and Ayoba-Yo Biltong South African Jerky, that caught their attention over the past week. 8:55: Interview: Natasha Case, Co-Founder/CEO, Coolhaus -- Project NOSH editor Carol Ortenberg met up with Coolhaus co-founder and CEO Natasha Case at BevNET Live Winter 2017 where they chatted about the inspiration behind the company (“Farchitecture" -- the intersection of food and architecture), Case’s perspective that “e-comm is the new food truck” and why Coolhaus is “in the game of one person buying us 1,000 times, not 1,000 people buying us once.” 36:11: Interview: Trevor Smith, Co-Founder, Secret Squirrel -- How to stay lean and mean in the early days of your brand? Bootstrapping. Natasha Case talked about it and we also heard it from Trevor Smith, who’s the co-founder of cold-brew beverage brand Secret Squirrel. In a conversation recorded last month in Santa Monica, BevNET Managing Editor Ray Latif spoke with Smith about his journey, including the early days of Secret Squirrel (“We weren’t prepared for the fundamentals.”), why entrepreneurship can often be a “lonely endeavor,” and how he defines success. 1:00:07: Elevator Talk: Eduardo Pentagna, CEO/Master Brewer, Novo Brazil Brewing -- Craft beer with a Brazilian vibe made in Southern California. What’s not to love? We caught up with the brand’s founder and CEO Eduardo Pentagna at Brewbound Session Winter 2017 where Novo Brazil triumphed in the event’s Startup Brewery Challenge competition. Just before the big win, Eduardo offered us for a quick introduction to the brand. Brands in this episode: Olivious, Ayoba-Yo, GT’s Kombucha, Jameson, Fireball, Gatorade, Essentia, Murray’s Bagels, Coolhaus, Secret Squirrel, Novo Brazil

The O'Reilly Radar Podcast: VR UX hurdles, bringing VR mainstream, and preparing for user behavior. This week, I chat with Timoni West, the principal designer at Unity Labs, where she specializes in virtual reality (VR) user experience. We talk about VR, the UX hurdles designers are tackling, what will drive mainstream adoption, and what we can expect from VR in the future.West will be talking more about VR at Strata + Hadoop World San Jose 2016 in her session "Virtual reality in 2016 and in the future." Here are some highlights from our chat: UX hurdles in VR The biggest UX challenges I've seen people tackling in various ways are, first, locomotion: how do you move around a space if the space is larger than the physical space you have available to you? If you're going to use some sort of movement mechanic to move the user's camera forward, how do you do that without getting them sick? There's a couple of really brilliant solutions to this already, so I think long term maybe that won't be so much of a big issue as it will be just deciding which one you want to go with. Do you want to use blink locomotion? Do you want to have a slow moving track? Do you want to have a portal-like mechanism, and so on. Another big one is how do you interact with objects in the world? Obviously, you can use the triggers to grab in a lot of different VR experiences right now. But having things like secondary hot keys if you want to interact with something in a slightly different way—what is the equivalent of the alt key in VR? That's something that comes up a lot in my particular line of work because we're taking a very complicated piece of software and trying to translate it into VR. There's also a lot around button mappings because no one has used controllers like these before. The Oculus Touch controllers are a bit more like a conventional game controller, but the Vive controllers definitely have a fairly new interaction, having grip buttons on the side and having the thumb pads that you can use as sort of a secondary radial menu. So, teaching people how to use that or figuring out when it's best to use those types of interactions—it's all new now. There's no standardization, nor do I think there should be at this point, but just trying to set things up so that people can smoothly move into interacting in your particular world. I think it's one of the biggest hurdles if you're making a game, or you're making an experience, or if you're making an app, or whatever for VR. Right now, there's a lot of special controllers that have huge text instructions next to them: 'Point here. Click here. Swipe your thumb right here. Right here, look at the arrow, right here.' Even then, people don't necessarily get it. Bringing VR mainstream I've shown off a lot of demos to ordinary people or friends—I had my parents come in and my brothers come in, none of whom do anything related to technology. The gear stuff is fairly compelling, especially little kids love it, but when people try out things like Fantastic Contraption or Tilt Brush, where they're actively creating and they are actively manipulating and making their own space in the world, that seems to be where people get the most excited—when they think they have some part of it or some ownership, they're not just looking at a beautiful scene. You can play a lot of video games and never have it occur to you that you can make a video game, right? When you have these creation tools, then I think people really feel like they can do something with it, they can own it. I think that is the thing that tumbles you over that cliff into actually considering maybe dropping $2,000 on a VR headset and computer. It is a lot of money right now. On the other hand, I'm carrying around a $700 tiny computer in my pocket all the time. Clearly, people get used to it. Hand gestures vs controllers When I first started in VR design, I was very bullish on natural hand gestures. I was like, 'Yeah, of course. Of course that's what we're going to do—we're going to use nail polish that doubles as a sensor and have our fingers be tracked in space. It seems intuitive.' But the longer that I work in VR, the more I'm bullish on controllers because they have very definite and definable actions attached to them. If I make a gesture with my hand, it could be a yes, it could be a no, it could be a thumbs up, it could be snapping my fingers. Those are things you want to do anyway, and having them remap to a specific verb in a specific app isn't always what you want. I'd like to be able to wave my hand without it opening up a menu item. Heads-up VR UX designers: Users will try to break everything There's an Apollo 11 VR experience. It was a pretty well-known Kickstarter. We have one of the demos on our computer. You're actually in the Apollo 11 shuttle and there's two astronauts sitting next to you, you're the furthest one to the left. I make everyone stand up and actually walk out of the capsule because then you can see the moon going toward you and you can see the Earth getting farther away from you. It's a really cool view. I did the demo once just trying to peer out the tiny little capsule window before I was like, 'Wait, I'm in VR, I can just go through the wall and go look. I don't need to be looking through this tiny little capsule window.' It feels so uncomfortable and people are like, 'What? You want me to walk through the...what? I can do that?' They sort of shuffle along really cautiously and then they get outside and they're happy. Stuff like that is pretty great. VR experience designers should definitely keep in mind that everyone will try to break everything and stick their heads in weird places.
It has been quite an experience 'incroyable' ! Mylene Farmer LIVE is beyond words; again she has touched me very deep. This time.... front row experience. Hard to explain, it's a feeling, it's a walking dream, it's something unique. This podcast is dedicated to Mylegrave;ne, her music, her unique live performance. The trip was a serious one.... and for Mylegrave;ne it was her final concert of the 2009 tour.Log: departure by train from Rotterdam Lombardijen @12:40pm. Dordrecht station @13:00. Change line for the next train: IC Hispeed to Brussels MIDI/ZUID. Arrival in Brussels @14:40. I decided to walk the last bit from the station to the hotel; next time I will definitely take the subway! It turned out to be a 15 minutes climbing up the hill task! Finally.....arrival at the hotel @15:15. After relaxing and unpacking the bag I recorded a soundseeingtour as featured on this podcast episode.Brussels on that particular friday afternoon was noisy and messy! Hate to say it but the chaos and noise in this city caused a typical impression. (...tout est chaos!) I've been in London and Paris but somehow these cities seem to have 'structure' and 'manners', unfortunately Brussels didn't show these features too much... People disliked speaking English to me. They simply hesitated. I was better off speaking Dutch in some cases. Don't get me wrong but Brussels is the headquarters of Europe isn't it? (Say that again while stores are closed on sundays)Saturday morning: alarm clock set @7:30AM. American Breakfast in the hotel was good. Left the hotel for my trip to Stade Roi Baudouin via subway. Arrived at the SRB station @9:30. I realized to get cash money for the official merchandizing t-shirts etc. later that day so where was the cash machine...? I asked around and was directed to the nearest bank at app. 2 km's from where I was! Not very practical isn't it? Welcome to Belgium. Ah well, good for some sweat and tears.Back at the stadium 'blue entry' around 11:00AM. Already like 30/40 people waiting for the doors to open up and I joined them. The sun was shining! Life was good! Some drinks, some sandwiches that I got on my way from the bank back to the stadium.Green light for entering the stadium area @1:30PM. Here we were able to buy lunch, water, beer etc. Soundchecking we could hear as the concert area was real close now...The waiting was till 5:00PM when the final gate to the concert area would open. And it did! Right on time... exactly 05:00pm we were running to our places!!! Literally, running!!! How cool is that??? Yess!!! Front row. Cat walk. All set. I was in !!!@8:00pm the program started. Excuse me but I've forgotten the name of the drum band that had their pre-concert performance. Just like me I saw many people staring and being nervous just before the real thing....We wanted Mylegrave;ne! Waiting again. Eventually Mylegrave;ne kept her fans waiting till app. 09:30PM (!) when her eyes watched us from the bigggg screen. The show was starting....with the introduction. And that is an understatement;Thrilling opening! I will never ever forget her eye watching from the screen and the lasers that literally were 'shot' from the screen into the public, a 3D experience I had never seen before! The sound was beyond words. And I've heard a lot of sound systems in my life.... this one was f a n t a s t i q u e . Everybody (including me) was screaming and yelling, such a mind blowing lift-off. The concert from there can be described as a non-stop walking dream, Mylegrave;ne took her fans on a journey, a journey that came from her mind, her soul, her dreams and was performed in a stadium filled with the 40,000 people audience.Acoustic parts of the show, she had entered the center of the catwalk via the underground like the pianist did too. The songs they performed now...I can hardly describe it but let me try: moving and intriguing moments, confusion and joy, tears on all of our faces; 'Point de Suture' and the clip...
On tonight's podcast, I share a poem with you by Robert Frost as we all seek to hang on to stars and ideals in these stressful times. I then talk about Sysco (SYY) which closed today at $22.82 (down $(1.12) on the day)(6/15/09). I touch on the latest earnings report, the Morningstar.com '5 Yr Restated' Financials, Yahoo "Key Statistics" and a 'point & figure' chart from StockCharts.com. This is more of a GARP investment, with a 4% yield!
