Neglecting to recognize and learn from mistakes can hinder personal growth, but embracing and learning from failures cultivates resilience and paves the way for future success. While conforming to the expectations of others may provide a sense of belonging, asserting your own strong opinions not only invites authenticity but also fosters a unique and impactful voice. Overlooking the challenges that come with an entrepreneurial journey might lead to stagnation, but actively seeking and embracing these challenges propels individuals toward continuous learning and eventual success. Shawn Anthony shares his life experiences, lessons, and advice to future leaders. Embracing mistakes is a pathway to growth and that discipline truly equals freedom in the journey towards success. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and more! Quotes: "I help build people's brands, giving them access to places they should be but can't get into." – Shawn Anthony "You have an advantage of having an older sibling because you see them make the first mistakes, see them not for your life, make bad decisions when they could have made a different one." – Shawn Anthony "Mistakes are actually your friend. You actually want to make mistakes because now you have these lessons that you can apply." – Shawn Anthony "I realized they did not look like me, sound like me, or share my age, and there was a certain audience I could attract and get a message to that they could never get." – Shawn Anthony "Discipline equals freedom. The more we stay focused and disciplined, even on the boring and the mundane, it moves the needle forward." – Shawn Anthony Takeaways: Challenges don't define you; they shape you. Use adversity as a motivator to create positive change in your life. Embrace opportunities for growth and exploration. Sometimes, a change in environment can open doors to a world of potential. Be adaptable and recognize when it's necessary to pivot. Your goals and circumstances may change, and it's okay to adjust your approach accordingly. Don't fear mistakes; see them as valuable lessons that contribute to your growth and development. Recognize and enhance your strengths, especially in areas like communication and leadership. They can set you apart in various situations. Regularly reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement. Use feedback as a guide to shape your career and personal development. Use your success to uplift and empower those around you. Sharing knowledge and opportunities can create a positive impact in your community. Conclusion: To develop and nurture an entrepreneurial mindset, it is crucial to not only embody kindness and perseverance but also actively seek out and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Expressing one's strong opinions about various matters not only demonstrates authenticity but also highlights individuality. By reflecting on the inherent unpredictability of life, we are constantly reminded of the importance of living each day with intention and gratitude, making the most of every moment, and appreciating the blessings that come our way.

It's another to turn that pain into purpose. Five-time cancer survivor Bill Potts has managed to do exactly that despite his 20-year (and still ongoing) battle. With his determination and lifestyle, you wouldn't have even known that Bill Potts has battled cancer five times. Yes, five times. This episode of the Success Through Failure podcast is not about cancer. It's about how you can own your journey and turn the struggle, scars, and pain into purpose. And after all these years, Bill is currently undergoing treatment for the sixth time, with number seven just a few years away. His accidental expertise led him to author "Up for the Fight: How to Advocate for Yourself as You Battle Cancer―from a Five-Time Survivor," a book on how to navigate through life after a diagnosis. For many of us, decades of surgeries, treatment, recovery, isolation are just plain unbearable, and understandably so. And yet, Bill's ability to somehow respond even better each and every day is nothing short of extraordinary. Bill Potts is a motivational speaker, business leader, community builder, and dedicated father and husband. He has held executive positions at the IRONMAN Group and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and lectured on marketing at Tulane University, where he earned his MBA. Describing himself as a “serial entrepreneur and investor” Eugene local Chad Barczak got his start in business at the age of 14 and never looked back, that is, until he decided it was time to take an “adult gap year” in his early 50s. Along the way he founded a massively successful snowboard company, earned a BS ('98) and MBA ('99) from the UO Lundquist School of Business as a non-traditional student, and founded IDX – a leading national provider of real estate search applications. Chad served as CEO of this Eugene-based company for 18 years, managing over $1 trillion worth of active listings data from over 600 individual Multiple Listing Services (MLS) before a successful exit during the pandemic. Though upfront about some detours along the way – millions of dollars in pre-paid orders lost because of a legal mistake, flunking out of the UO (before going all in with his studies and earning straight As), and a questionable use of financial aid – to hear Chad tell it, his greatest failures have actually been his greatest successes. When he's not snowboarding down a Chilean mountain or on the hunt for new entrepreneurs to mentor, Chad has a soft spot for the nostalgic video games of his youth: you might also know him as the co-founder and lead investor of Eugene's immensely popular Level Up Arcade.
