In Enough is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Eezier to Spell (Dey Street Books, 2025), Gabe Henry presents a  brief and humorous 500-year history of the Simplified Spelling Movement from advocates like Ben Franklin, C. S. Lewis, and Mark Twain to texts and Twitter. Why does the G in George sound different from the G in gorge? Why does C begin both case and cease? And why is it funny when a philologist faints, but not polight to laf about it? Anyone who has ever had the misfortune to write in English has, at one time or another, struggled with its spelling. So why do we continue to use it? If our system of writing words is so tragically inconsistent, why haven't we standardized it, phoneticized it, brought it into line? How many brave linguists have ever had the courage to state, in a declaration of phonetic revolt: "Enough is enuf"?  The answer: many. In the comic annals of linguistic history, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to bring English into the realm of the rational. This book is about them: Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Eliza Burnz, C. S. Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Darwin, and the innumerable others on both sides of the Atlantic who, for a time in their life, became fanatically occupied with writing thru instead of through, tho for though, laf for laugh, beleev for believe, and dawter for daughter (and tried futilely to get everyone around them to do it too). Henry takes his humorous and informative chronicle right up to today as the language seems to naturally be simplifying to fit the needs of our changing world thanks to technology--from texting to Twitter and emojis, the Simplified Spelling Movement may finally be having its day. Talk the Talk - a podcast about linguistics, the science of language.

Spelling reform in English: a constant failure? Or a secret success? Waves upon waves of optimists have tried to make English spelling reflect its sound and escape its etymological origins, but have never seen their vision fully realised. Author Gabe Henry has chronicled the attempts, and he joins us on this episode.  Gabe is the author of Enough Is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Easier to Spell, available from Dey Street Books. Why does the G in George sound different from the G in gorge? Why does C begin both case and cease? And why is it funny when a phonologist falls, but not polight to laf about it? Anyone who has the misfortune to write in English will, every now and then, struggle with its spelling. According to a study in the British Journal of Psychology, children take 2-3 times longer to grasp English spelling compared to more phonetic orthographies like German and Spanish. ENOUGH IS ENUF: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Easier to Spell (April 15, 2025; Dey Street) is about them: Noah Webster, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Eliza Burnz, C. Releasing from a staple of the New York Comedy Scene-Gabe Henry, whose previous book of haikus featured comics like Jerry Seinfeld and Aubrey Plaza and was lauded for its "wit and wisdom" (Dick Cavett) and "pure fun" (The Interrobang)-ENOUGH IS ENUF reveals how, and why, language is organically simplifying to fit the needs of our changing world. "Just look at our national spelling bee," Henry said in a recent interview with BIG THINK. "There's a whole glorification of complicated words. People pride themselves on mastering the complications and origins of our words. They want to hold onto that. The core of the book is that language is always changing - whether consciously or unconsciously, whether direction or indirectly - and no one should fight it. Language has to evolve just like culture, just like people. It's hard to accept because we want to exert control over the things around us, but it's like letting a child grow up. It's just the natural course." Henry's intelligent yet approachably laugh-out-loud humor will appeal to fans of Nine Nasty Words, Semicolon, and The Pun Also Rises, and the timing couldn't be better with the 100th anniversary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which Henry covers annually, happening soon after publication. Thanks to technology-from texting to Twitter and emojis-the Simplified Spelling Movement may finally be having its day.and etymologists, linguists, and book lovers alike will be keen to learn mor!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

You don't need more affirmations. But perhaps, like many of us, you are desiring tools, skills and strategies for navigating the seasons where your faith starts to feel foolish and the results you wished for are taking longer than the ego can bear. In this episode we explore navigating suspicion around our creative commitments and the temptation to give up inside the messy middle. We remember the potency of our creative power activates when we're lost, not when we know the way. How do we remain steadfast inside our commitments while facing the grief, fear and uncertainty of our time? How do we trade the misleading allure of instant gratification with the sturdy sense of alignment that arises when we choose the practice of closing the gap between our values and our actions everyday, as Mariame Kaba invites us to do? How do we release all our “shoulds” and stay in the game long enough to learn what comes next? These are the questions we explore inside today's episode.ResourcesRegister for the Free 2-Part Worldbuilding Workshop Series and Download the Spring 2025 Syllabus: https://www.seedaschool.com/programSubscribe to the Seeda School Substack: https://seedaschool.substack.com/Follow Ayana on Instagram: @ayzacoFollow Ayana on Threads: @ayzacoFollow Seeda School on Instagram: @seedaschoolCitations“for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf” is a 1976 work by Ntozake Shange. No language is as inconsistent in spelling and pronunciation as English. Kernel and colonel rhyme, but read changes based on past or present tense. Ough has many pronunciations: ‘aw’ (thought), ‘ow’ (drought), ‘uff’ (tough), ‘off’ (cough), ‘oo’ (through). In response to this orthographic minefield, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to bring English into the realm of the rational: Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Eliza Burnz, C. S. Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Darwin, and the innumerable others on both sides of the Atlantic who, for a time in their life, became fanatically occupied with writing thru instead of through, tho for though, laf for laugh (and tried futilely to get everyone around them to do it too). This began with the “simplified spelling movement” starting with medieval England and continuing to Revolutionary America, from the birth of standup comedy to contemporary pop music, and lasting influence can still be seen in words like color (without a U), plow (without -ugh), and the iconic ’90s ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U.” To explore this history is today’s guest, Gabe Henry, author of “Enough is Enuf, Our Failed Attempts to Make English Easier to Spell.” We look at the past and present of the digital age, where the swift pace of online exchanges (from emojis to social media) now pushes us all 2ward simplification. Simplified spelling may, at last, be having its day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gurus: The Story of Acting from Stanislavsky to Succession

Alfre Woodard has been astonishing audiences with her humanity, her truth, her beauty, and her versatility as an actress since she first came into view in the early 1980's. Starting on the stage in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enuf and then in the film, Cross Creek with Mary Steenburgen, she's practiced and perfected her craft in too many films and recurring TV series roles to recount here. We met around 20 years ago when I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with her at the 92nd Street Y for a performance of Voices of a People's History of the United States that included her frequent co-star, Danny Glover. Alfre then, in person, was so warm and unassuming, it was no surprise to find her that way again in the  conversation you're about to hear. We actually spoke twice - there was just too much to cover in one session - and I was glad because I really wanted to hear about her experience playing the healer woman, Paris, in the Apple TV series SEE. It's about an imagined world, hundreds of years in the future, where sight has become extinct in humans and blindness is the common condition. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. Alfre Woodard has received various accolades, including four Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well as nominations for an Academy Award and two Grammy Awards. In 2020, The New York Times ranked her as one of "The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century". --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/storyofacting/message

In this episode, Vonda kicks off with a message around the value of learning. Vonda says, “Eventually when white people have had enough, you'll learn. Take that pill.” You can you do it. You live, love, cry, loose, bleed, scream, grieve, laugh, choose, pray, ask… “It's unfortunate, white people have not learn to metabolize complex difficult or challenging feelings. However it's important to take that jagged little pill with the recognition that Black people never get the privilege of comfort.” You learn.   Connect with Vonda on LinkedIn. https://bit.ly/3qOS4Eo Watch LIVE episodes of The Group Chat here. https://bit.ly/3mfRFrv

In Vonda's words... "When WWHHE, they'll consider some food for thought and thought for food. When are white people going to unpack your stuff? “White women carry the water and do the dirty work for men.” Those same 40% of women who owned slaves before 1865 are working in HR, Marking and Legal and Government Relations, in hospitals, schools, corporations, banks, and every other industry. Today they are delivering the same punishments as their - but with advanced means. Today the same descendants leverage technology, power and Anti-Blackness to maintain status quo. “When white people have had enough they will treat each other as sisters and stop letting each other get harmed by the patriarchy?" The Body Keeps the Score is a book Vonda recommends to help unpack internal trauma. If you've been abused in the past, you must heal, rather than heap your past trauma on others. Anti-Blackness is the foundation on which we operate and until white people are unhappy with the status quo. The food for thought; how long will we continue a debased society where women hurt other women on purpose!" In Vonda's words... "One of the things to unpack, with the quickness, is your family history. Understanding and unpacking the truth about your family history is a major key to unlocking your current beliefs, attitudes, actions and the underlying frameworks within. It also serves as an on-ramp for personal healing. Although uncovering your family history is often a painful journey for many, it's critical for growth and I'm glad I've been on a personal healing journey for more than a decade that has changed my life."  Vonda says, “You are connected to your history even if you're not in contact with them any more. They are part of who you are right now and today. Look for the truth in your family history to learn more about how you think, feel and act. Unpack your family history and learn to live with and in truth!" Want to know more about our LinkedIn Learning courses? In Vonda's words... "Closely following the presidency of Jimmy Carter was the beginning of my education and interest in politics, change, leadership, media, economics, government and understanding Beltway shenanigans. I read the newspapers and gave oral and written reports to my grandfather who didn't have time to read much more after he spent hours poring over Dow Jones and Nasdaq end of market close line by line. When it comes to this stuff I know my ish, and sadly we are further down the bad path that most people believe. And something's got to give.   I've been trying to think of how to make it plain - I have been struggling for months with construction on my house, finding good cameras, and lighting, etc. This topic, this time, it is far too urgent to wait any longer. It's time to make moves. It's time to shift the standards. It's time to shake the up the structures and it's time to shape the strategies savvily to get this ISH done! Nothing is going to change until white people have had enuf. (Yes, E N U F) Black people do not have power to stop it, this train of trauma, terror and tumult. If so, we would have been done it.  This new series, When White People Have Had Enuf, will bridge the gap in understanding what liberal white people face when it comes to taking tactics, tools and techniques to the streets to get real shit done. All that was out there at the time were white dolls dipped in chocolate with straight hair. It was also easier to find a needle in a haystack than a children's book featuring a positive African-American family.”Darla self-published the “Here Comes Niya” book with an audiotape in 1984 and manufactured the multilingual Niya doll in 1991. The “Here Comes Niya' doll is the first African-American doll to speak English, Spanish, and Swahili. In 2000, Darla inked her first chain store deal to sell the Niya baby doll in K-mart. In 2006, she became a finalist on the ABC American Inventor show and won $50,000 to advance her doll line on national television. It was there where Niya and her Global friends were born. After the American Inventor show, and in 2007, they launched a Niya and Friends specialty doll line at the ABC Kids Expo.  “All children deserve to see positive images that look like them in the toys they play with, in the media they watch, and in the literature they read.” Darla is relentless in filling the void. What's next for Niya and her Clubhouse Crew?
