Teen-Mother Accused of Throwing Newborn Baby in Trash | Police Interrogation of Alexis Avila ‘We just found a baby in the trash': Hobbs teen faces attempted murder charges HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – New details are emerging about a teen mother accused of throwing her newborn baby in the trash. Hobbs Police arrested 18-year-old Alexis Avila over the weekend for attempted murder. At a press conference on Monday, Interim Police Chief August Fons says he's never seen anything like this during his time in law enforcement. He explains why Avila was released so soon after being taken into custody. “At the time the warrant was signed by the judge and the judge signed a $10,000 unsecured bond appearance bond and at that point, she was released about an hour later.” A criminal complaint says Avila claimed she didn't know she was pregnant until she went to a doctor for stomach pain last Thursday. Avila says she gave birth in her bathroom the next day. She then reportedly told authorities that she panicked. She says she wrapped the baby boy in a towel, placed it in a trash bag, and drove around before eventually throwing the baby in a dumpster at the Broadmoor Shopping Center. The baby would spend six cold hours in the dumpster. Three people who were dumpster diving found the baby after hearing a cry. They first thought it was a kitten when they picked up the bag. Surveillance video captured the scene as a woman pulls the baby from the trash bag. The woman then tries to comfort the baby boy who can be heard in the 911 call. Police are then seen arriving at the scene. Joe Imbriale owns Rig Outfitters and Homestore and his surveillance cameras are pointed toward those dumpsters.

Prior to doing the podcast, I met Travis at dinner in Las Olas through a mutual friend Patrick Cohen. Travis recently arrived here in S. Florida and had plans for connecting good people in business together. He wanted a community in S. Florida that would connect finance, developers and entrepreneurs in the same room. A few months later I attended the event sponsored by his company and since that time we've exchanged numerous texts, calls and emails back and forth discussing various business deals, partnerships and team members.  But strangely enough it would be another few months before I could get him on the podcast. At the time his company Saalex was in the middle of an acquisition and he didn't want to say anything that would jeopardize the deal.  On April 4, 2022 the news hit that his company Saalex acquired Rhode Island based Netsimco in a $30 million transaction and so now we would be able to sit down and have a conversation.  As per the article The company's acquisition of Netsimco will allow it to reach annual recurring revenue of $100 million. For context, Saalex CFO Randy Wheeler said the company generated about $5 million in revenue in 2010, and has shown “consistent growth” to reach the $100 million mark. Saalex Corporation is an Engineering and Information Technology Services firm with core capabilities in the areas of Test Range Operations and Management, Information Technology, Test and Evaluation, Logistics and Engineering Services, founded in 1999 by CEO Travis Mack. More recently Managed security service provider (MSSP) Valeo Networks of which Mr. Mack is the CEO  acquired Next IT, a Michigan-based managed service provider (MSP). The deal marks the sixth and largest acquisition for Valeo Networks and is part of the company's overall growth strategy. The company previously acquired On Time Tech, a California-based MSP, in November 2021. Mr. Mack provides executive leadership and direction for Saalex Corporation the parent company for Saalex Solutions and Valeo Networks. He provides oversight and guidance for each division's strategic growth and tactical operational initiatives. His experience includes multi-year service in the U.S. Navy and Senior Technology management positions with Homestore.com, and Modis IT Consulting. Mr. Mack holds a B.S. in Business Management and an Honorary Doctorates Degree in Business from Webber International University.  Valeo Networks is a full-service, award-winning Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) that serves State, County, Municipal markets; small-to-medium businesses (SMBs); and non-profit organizations. Valeo Networks provides solutions in the areas of cybersecurity, compliance, cloud, network infrastructure, and managed IT services headquartered in Rockledge, FL,  I promise you will enjoy this podcast as we get into the nuts and bolts of how this veteran built not one but two successful businesses.  How he launched a $50M Real Estate fund?  How was he able to finance acquisitions of this magnitude?  This interview was captured live in Mr. Mack offices downtown Ft Lauderdale, FL a few blocks from Las Olas, you can feel the energy.  Welcome our next Giant, Mr. Travis Mack.

Teaching Adv. Negotiation/Transactions, and Negotiation by Design. David Johnson has been teaching Negotiation at SLS annually since 2006, in conjunction with his full-time practice of law in Silicon Valley from 1996 to date. In addition, he is a Lecturer in the Hasso Plattner School of Design (a/k/a “the d.school”), where he has recently completed the third instance of his new course, Negotiation by Design. He has testified before the California Assembly on legislation addressing software liability. Thereafter he appeared before Congress, as lead counsel for the Business Software Alliance in hearings before the House Subcommittee for Science and Technology. He currently serves on the California State Bar Executive Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, and its subcommittee on Education and Inclusivity. David is a regular speaker at conferences, seminars and panels on various subjects in law, science and technology, as well as negotiation. David brings to his teaching a unique blend of breadth and depth in the practice of law. He began his career in the courtroom, with over 20 civil trials, jury and bench, state and federal. He has briefed and argued a dozen state appellate matters, with 6 opinions issued, including one state Supreme Court argument challenging the prima facie constitutionality of a sales tax on commercial speech. More recently, he was appointed as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington in order to appear for the State before the Alaska Supreme Court in a case of first impression directly impacting all of Washington's state-owned hospitals. In Silicon Valley, he has litigated scores of patent, copyright, trade secret, trade dress, antitrust, and business cases, and worked on corporate transactional and governance matters. First with Fenwick & West, and thereafter Morgan/Lewis, he represented an array of technology and business clients such as: Apple, Brøderbund, Cisco, Electronic Arts, Go Remote, Homestore.com, Intuit, Juniper, McKesson, Merrill-Lynch, Micron, Rambus, Sankyo Pharma, Sun, Symantec, Tibco, and The Computer History Museum, pro bono. David's first General Counsel role was with Internet pioneer, AllAdvantage, blending online advertising, social media and user-data capture & mining. A Credit Suisse portfolio company pre-IPO, AADV ultimately fell victim to the crash. Thereafter, he took the reins as COO and GC of Palo Alto-based innovation accelerator MG Taylor, negotiating to closing their joint-venture-to-acquisition with Vanderbilt University Medical Center to create the nation's first Healthcare Innovation Center, installed and operating at Vanderbilt's Center for Better Health. Remaining in Silicon Valley, David moved next into biotech, as Deputy General Counsel for Xenogen (NYSE: XGEN), which coupled innovations in genetic engineering and in vivo biophotonics, invented by Chris Contag, Stanford Professor of Microbiology, to create breakthrough improvements in cancer research. David co-managed Xenogen's public-public merger with Caliper Life Sciences (NYSE: CALP), a global microfluidics and lab instrumentation developer. Upon closing, he was brought over as Caliper's Deputy General Counsel. Several years hence, David took another leadership position as a Principal and General Counsel of former client Triage Consulting Group, a privately-held revenue-cycle consultancy for academic, children's and other hospitals nationwide. For the last three years, David has served as General Counsel for a non-profit foundation operating a WASC-accredited STEM graduate university in Silicon Valley. For his JSM degree in Law, Science & Technology, David's interdisciplinary research and writing proposed that both object-modeling technique (OMT) and fuzzy set theories, as proven design schemas in computing, should therefore find applications in law, policy, and decision-making; eliciting from his faculty advisor the observation that he was “one of the most widely-read people I know.” In addition to reading, David is an avid skier and golfer, and a diligent but decidedly average tennis player. In today’s episode I’m talking to the wonderful Alex Walls – owner and general manager of A&C Homestore. For many of us, Alex first came to our attention when she appeared on The Block NZ in 2014 with her husband Corban. For avid watchers you will remember that Alex and Corban won that year while they completely nailed the show from a design perspective and were super generous when they won, giving away a portion of their winnings to one of the other teams who didn’t have a great result. When The Block finished Alex and Corban launched A&C Homestore after they struggled to find affordable and locally accessible furniture and homewares that truly reflected their own style and character. What began as an online store and a pop-up shop in Takapuna has since grown to include three Auckland stores in Birkenhead, Mt Eden and Orakei. In this episode you will hear how Alex started her career in fashion retail and then turned a reality TV experience and a strong eye for design into three growing retail stores and a homewares & lifestyle brand. And she's done it all while having two babies and a major new home build. I'd say she's the ultimate creative multi-tasker and I hope you get as much from this episode as I did! “Experience marketing” is a key tactic these days, especially for marketers seeking to appeal to the millennial and Gen Z target. Pandora has been an enabler of high profile experiences via “Pandora Live” which offers sponsors ways to deliver customers up close and personal access to high wattage musicians. After participating as one of a group of advertisers at recent Country concerts, Ashley Homestore went the custom route to be able to build out an exclusive experience to promote the launch of new furniture line, “Urbanology.” With Pandora pulling the concert strings with multi-award-winning artist, Ne-Yo, Ashley tricked out Goya Studios in Hollywood with an engaging and hands-on experience for 1000 fans. The retailer recreated home environments using the new mid-century modern style line that is “retro cool” to that target audience now. Stationed between fresh donuts in the “kitchen” to also "retro-cool" Air Guitar challenges in the “den”, well-known DJ Jerzy spun songs at the pre-show while influencers like the Stauffer twins bounced on the bed in the “bedroom” and Bachelorettes and others milled around striking poses with press and fans.  Senior marketing director, Kelly Davis, described the goals for this huge launch event, how they selected Ne-Yo to align with, and how Ashley continues to give back.

This week we reflect on episodes of the past year with a compilation of some the show’s memorable segments on women in leadership, starting with Ms Phuti Mahanyele the Executive Chairperson of Sigma Capital, and former Chief Executive Officer of the Shanduka Group, one of South Africa’s leading investment holding companies. We raise concerns about the perceived regression of women in executive roles, and postulate measures to raise the number of female executives, such as instating gender quotas and celebrating successful businesses with women in executive roles to acknowledge the positive performance of entities with women occupying leadership roles. Secondly, Professor Penelope Andrews, the Dean of the Faculty of law at the University of Cape Town, raises various impediments as barriers to women’s advancement and remarks that eradicating racism is easier than eradicating sexism against women; which may be blatant or benign, and perpetuated by women, as well as men, as they attempt to hold on to outdated stereotypical expectations of women. We note that female leadership makes a difference in the lives of girls and women, particularly when it comes to directing and influencing policy. Lastly, Margaret Hirsch, COO of Hirsch’s Homestore highlights some of the responsibilities associated with business ownership. and shares some tips for aspiring entrepreneurs, such as cautioning against taking out loans, working while others are sleeping, the importance of exercising mind and body, working hard, building networks and social capital, and embracing lifelong learning.
