How To Overcome Jealousy?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2025

Jealousy is a passion that causes pain.Jealousy happens if our darling loves another guy, then we feel worthless. Or if another body gets the promotion that we desire. Jealousy is a part of our ego. We should not support our jealousy. Why? If we support jealousy instead of punishing the jealousy, it will grow. The reason number one for homicide in Thailand is Jealousy!!!Because the Thai society is not punishing Jealousy.  For the Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam is Jealousy the worst sentiment! I was grown up in a big family, and we had to share. Imagine within 3 years my mother got two twins and one single. There was no option to be jealous because we got severe punishment for that. A big family, cannot afford jealousy. What can we do, to overcome Jealousy? We speak over our Jealousy to everybody, so that we lose the attachment of our Jealousy. We never want that other people are caring for our Jealousy. We do the opposite. I had a jealous girlfriend, and I was provoking her with her Jealousy again and again until she let go her Jealousy. For instance, she was phoning me, and asked where I am? I replied, I am in a Nightclub and have a fantastic time with the girls there. Or she was coming home I pretended that another girl is still there. It was always so funny! What to do, when we are getting jealous?First, we recognize our Jealousy. We know how bad this emotion will affect us and we don't want that other person to suffer under our jealousy. We breathe deeply in that jealousy and release that feeling when we exhale. (Do it until the jealousy is gone). Or we make Bioenergetic or EFT for Jealousy. If we can get help would be good. We apologize that we didn't trust. How I have handled my Jealousy?I was together with a girl, we went to a party, and she got in love with another guy. I felt humiliated and desperate. I repeated in my mind: I am a nobody, a nothing, (quote from Zen). I repeated this, again and again, until I felt it. Suddenly I went in a deep tremendous bliss and silent state. Jealousy was gone! Our Ego wants that we are something, that we are special. So more humble we are so less suffering and so less jealousy. My Video: How To Overcome Jealousy?  https://youtu.be/kqcKIeE8-wwMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.B/How-To-Overcome-Jealousy.mp3

With our “I” and “My” start the problems

The great Yogi Ramakrishna strongly avoided saying “I” or “my”.A wife went to a doctor and asked him what she should do because her husband doesn't like to have sex with her anymore. The doctor answered bring me your husband and I will solve the problem. The doctor said to her husband before you go to bed, go to the bathroom and in front of the mirror say 10 times: I don't know her, and she is not my wife.Problem solved! Because what we don't know and don't own is exciting. If we say it is “my” friend then our ego assumes that we own our friend and that he is under our control. That is the reason why we are so angry if our friend does what we don't like. And when we are married we think that we both own our spouse. After the separation our illusion is over, we have never owned our spouse and our spouse was never under our control. Because of our illusion, we own our spouse we suffered so hard. Be thankful that you are together in a loving relationship. How would you appreciate your time together, if you would think that your loving relationship can end every moment? Our Ego likes to personalize everything so that even after some time an innocent PC, smartphone, car,… becomes a person. And if these things getting broken or don't work we get angry. As a kid, I have learned what I really owned. My mother said: close your eyes and what you see is yours.  We don't own anything. When the Greek emperor Alexander the Great died, he said: “Make two holes in the coffin and let my hands hang outside. Because everybody should see that I died with empty hands.”All our accusation in this world are temporary and not under our control. Even it is so with our body or life. Without the grace of God, we are nothing. Our Ego/I assumes that we are God that we have everything under our control…. Everybody experience devastating moments where we had been overwhelmed. Still, after some time, we think we have everything under our control. That is the incurable disease of our ego.   When we brag what we have done we can't really see the reality. Because we depend on so many circumstances. And God punishes our bragging with worse moments. Watch yourself when you brag, what will happen afterward? Ramakrishna said:God laughsWhen a doctor said I have healed him. When two brothers divide the land of their died father and say this land is yours and that land is mine.Everything owns God!Praise the LordMy Video: With our “I” and “My” start the problems https://youtu.be/lJThjlIS23kMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.B/With-our-“I”-and-“My”-start-the-problems.mp3

Today, if we like to meet somebody, typically everybody likes to say he has no time, he is busy… so he has to schedule the time… Like a very important person. Our Ego loves a tied schedule because then our Ego feels important. Our Death also loves a busy timetable because we run from one appointment to the next and at the end of the road stands the Death with open arms to snap away our life. Or do you think that it is coincident that even in India the death toll from heartache surpasses all the other diseases? And 30 years ago there was rarely any heartache in India! Stress is the killer number 1.Actually, even kids have a busy timetable, so they must plan in advance their time.We lose the contact with ourselves, when we are overly busy and become a robot without any feelings. We have only time to think and the feelings we skip.We run behind a tied schedule so that we always escape from ourselves. We don't want to face our dark sides of us so that our dark sides controlling our life.If we are not aware of our enemies inside, then our own enemies getting the control over our lives. Think this over.My father was working 7 days a week and over 80 hours… His tyrannic character was showing up when he was stressed through his work. He was beating and abusing us on a daily basis. Do you think, we had always been the reason for his anger? No, it was his work… And he could not reflect on the cause of his stress, anger… Because he had no time to do so.Time is money… If we are greedy:1.) we can't work enough,2.) we can't have enough,3,) and we can't enjoy our life. For God or the divine, we have no time, and the death has scheduled our life.Very often, I see these over-busy people in front of a TV, Laptop or smartphone and wasting their time.It looks contradicting, the busy timetable and on the other hand procrastinating or wasting time for nonsense. If we are busy, we need time to relax, to come back and for that, we choose the smartphone or other digital equipment… Because our inner child wants playtime.Instead, we should choose to do workouts to free us from our anger, frustration, and tension. Afterward, we meditate and connect with the divine.Less is much more! If we decide to live relaxed, with enough time for reflection, sport, and meditation… we have much more from our life. And we live much longer. If we decide to live relaxed, even then are coming unexpected stressful moments. And if we had been relaxed before, we can care much better for such stressful events and find easier the best solution. My video: The Disease of Being Busy The Disease of Being Busy  https://youtu.be/BR4siq-kVwQMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.A/The-Disease-of-Being-Busy.mp3

I want to give you ample proof that body strain exhaust can be used to reset your life, get rid of your traumas, and connect with the Lord.It is well proven that body-oriented therapy like Bio Energetic brings up the negative suppressed feelings and releases the negative feelings and thoughts. Our negative emotions are creating all of our negative thoughts.Without pain, no gainWith special body exercises like Bioenergetic, and encounter under strain we can free ourselves from our negativity….We have to undergo some pain…Has sport or body strain through work the same effect? In London, they have science proven on thousands of depressive patients that through sport, the depression will go…Every body exercise with strain will release a part of our negativity and give us some calmness in our minds….What is the most effective technique to do so?After my experiences so more strain so better…Some examples: I have done and still doing trekking. I have found out that so heavier the back-sack, so more difficult the trek and so more days we are trekking, so more we gain clarity, and calmness in our minds….1.) Near Pueblo, Mexico, we climbed a Volcano from an altitude of 2900m to 4500m in 3 hours, and in 1.5 hours back…For sure that was fast.I repeated the name of God with every step I took! Why?Try it out, after some time you have much more energy and you can connect more easily with the Lord.I had to go through my inside barriers to keep up the speed… My legs had been so exhausted that it was difficult to hike. And I had big breathing problems when we reached a higher altitude. Nevertheless, I still kept walking and repeating the name of God …After this strain all my negativity was gone and I got confidence and could start a new life. Our Ego wants to keep up the negativity and so it will hinder us from releasing our negativity through exhausting our body…And is telling us always to stop such activity where our body can be exhausted…. Don't trust your Ego!In the past, 1000 years ago, it was normal for the majority to exhaust the body and so release daily their negativity…And for sure life was happier than our life….2.) I wanted to trek from Manang to the holy Muktinath temple via the Thorong La pass, an altitude of 5410m.Life is not easy, we had landslides on the road to Manang. We needed 2 days to Manang…Normally you have to stay 1 to 2 days in Manang for acclimatisation at the high altitude…I skipped that because we need 2 days to Manang.Every morning and evening I meditated, and did my Qigong, to make sure to do everything for a true pilgrimage. This 3-day trek, from Manang to Muktinath is very exhausting, on the last day we had to climb 1000m altitude to cross the Thorong La pass, and then 2000m down to Muktinath.I coughed already a cold…I asked a porter what to do, and he said simply go slowly, then you can do it…In the end, I could go only very slowly 5 steps, and then pause to grasp the air…At this altitude is only 1/6 of the oxygen than at sea level.Even I could enjoy it, I could see so much more without chasing a goal …Just to be in the here and now, surrounded by snow…Finally, I crossed the Thorong La Pass and could run down… fast…I wanted air…Again, I repeated my mantra and that gave me so much more power than usual and made me relaxed. My psychological pain/traumas from my previous relationship were gone, I could reset my life… And start a new positive life and attract the things that I needed…My Video:  Episode 37 Pilgrimage with body strain to exhaust our negativity! https://youtu.be/hFS_ZBypKCsMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast4/Episode-37-Pilgrimage-with-body-strain-to-exhaust-our-negativity.mp3

Well, just detox. For me are all people toxic.... You can learn the most in your life if you are together with difficult people. And that quote I have heard from so many Gurus, like Osho, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan,… What you learn to deal with toxic people is priceless. When I have read the book, “I never have promised you a rose garden.”I could understand that we are not so different from other people. Our EGO thinks always that we are superior and much better than the other guy. Don't get in the trap of the EGO.This book (mentioned before) describes the healing of an autistic, mad person in a madhouse.A male nurse said to that mad person, I am not different than you…We should go in the foot of that toxic person to understand that person…What we reject becomes worse or harms us. Your own sins you see first in other people. (Goethe) Our brain can only see bad habits in other people when our brain has the same bad habits. I don't know why, but all of my chiefs thought I can deal with all kinds of difficult people so they put me together with them. And in India in the Ashram, it was the same... I had to deal with suicide candidates and really awful wicked people... All people thought that I can do that, to normalize them... Yes, I can...Because I tried to understand them and to connect with them. The same is true that I had to ride the most dangerous horses… I connected with these wild horses and afterward, everybody could ride these horses.  Use that opportunity to deal with toxic people and get books, on how to deal with difficult people. Try out new strategies.Remember, we are all the same. My Video:  How to deal with toxic people? Ep#249- The Battle of Our Ego and Our Soul- An Interview with Intuitive and Author, Sue Frederick. My guest for this empowerring chat is Sue Frederick. She is an author, a spiritual coach an intuitive and an ordained Unity Minister. In this empowering chat, Sue shares her story of holding her husband as he died in her arms when she was 29. It changed her life forever, sending her on a deep spiritual journey. Those questions took her on a journey of studying Buddhism, Hinduism and learning about Numerology.  She now helps clients through their spiritual journeys. Those questions took her on a journey of studying Buddhism, Hinduism and learning about Numerology, and eventually she become a Unity Minister. She now help clients through their spiritual journeys. Her latest book is called, “Through a Divine Lens, Practices to Quiet Your Ego and Align with Your Soul.” Sue illuminates the soul path in her book through personal stories and client stories. She also offers tools we can all use to access our soul's purpose. Sue believes that spiritual awakening is possible through the Divine Lens. And the battle of our Ego versus our  Soul is at the center of our growth and our learning. The old way of thinking claims we can change the world by convincing others that we have the right ideas. It is an "us" versus "them" mentality. It doesn't work. Perhaps at one time it did, however we have now come to realize that is not the lesson on the table. It has to start with us, with me, with you. Sue shared how she had to learn that no matter what somebody believes she has to see the soul in that person. Or said another way:” I have to see the All-good, all God universe in every person I come in contact with. I have to remember to “love on them.” And that is so hard to do in these very difficult times we are living in. According to Sue, when we look at life through the Ego lens, (which resides in the human mind) we often forget we have a soul too, one that is here to guide us through the higher frequency of love – and that cannot be achieved when the human ego is engaged. The ego is all about self-preservation and keeping us safe through the tough challenges we humans face. And our society preaches fear, getting ahead, competition and so on, anything to stay ahead and stay safe. It doesn't work. All that does is amp our anxiety, our fears and our need to control everything around us. And now we are achieving at a whole new level of consciousness and growth. Now we can get beyond the ego, beyond the mind, to the heart space. We have to be heartfelt soul beings who see everybody here as beautiful souls. Some are walking a troubled path and some are walking with pure love in their heart. And we all have to help each other stay in the light and always walk toward love. Meditation, mindfulness practices and journaling can help us to get in touch with our soul so that we can quiet the ego and allow the soul to lead. We all have this accessible to us, but it takes work and intention to access our souls and let love lead the way. "Through a Divine Lens," outlines much of this and helps us to access those parts of ourselves that are meant to lead in light and love. ? When was the last time you embraced criticism & correction in your life? How do you even know which voices to listen to and let speak into your life? Join Kent as he dives into this important topic looking at the book of Proverbs. Let's grow together! ?? #SermonTime. IT'S EASY TO GIVE at Harmony, text any amount to (859) 459-0316 to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give ). ----------------- OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Years ago, when I was a youth pastor. I was at this camp and we had a “morning show” it was basically a way to wake up all the kids and get them excited for the day. We would get up there and do gross games and make jokes and make it super fun and set the expectation for the kids. Every day I would have the kids turn to their neighbor and say, “best camp ever…” in a derogatory and negative way. The kids would do it and I would laugh and get them to laugh and we'd move on. Finally, my buddy Jason Schmidt pulled me aside after a few days of this and he rebuked me. He said, “Kent, all the kids love you and follow you and when you make it like camp is no fun, you set the attitude for all of them… you're a leader, you need to lead them better…” Man, that hit me hard… If I'm honest, his words stung me a little bit. But, as I sat back and looked at it Most of my growth as a leader has come from the hard truthful things and the people who risked telling them to me rather than through the easy things of life. don't you find that to be true? ILLUSTRATION: Years ago I tried my hand at making knives. The thing that shapes a knife from blank steel into an instrument you can cut with is heat, pressure, and friction. The process of producing a tool requires the removal and reshaping of material - it takes heat, pressure, and friction SCRIPTURE: This week, we are taking a breather from Basecamp because I want to challenge you to expand your thinking to be willing to embrace a concept that our world has in some ways lost. Your growth as a human is partially a product of the heat, pressure, and friction in your life - so stop running from it. Let me explain. I've told you the culture of the Kingdom of God is not the culture of the world we live in. One of my biggest worries is that over the course of Basecamp, you are going to hear certain concepts and ideas and because they challenge the status quo, you are going to reject them instead of being willing to consider them. b They will feel like Rebuke, and our culture is scared to allow anyone to tell them they might be wrong. b Let's look at some of what the book of Proverbs says about Rebuke to give us a pattern to use for personal growth. 1. Restructure your thinking about discipline… Proverbs 12:1: "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid." Discipline is not the same as punishment. -Discipline is the means to course-correct -Discipline comes from a desire of what is best for a person ILLUSTRATION: Good parents know how to teach this concept to their children. The reason you are correcting them is because you love them, not because you hate them. I tell my kids all the time if I hated them, I would let them do whatever the heck they want. It is my love for them that puts me in a position to do the hard things and bring correction. What keeps people from loving discipline/correction [have the bullets appear one at a time] Our Ego (if you operate out of pride or fear, you will innately reject discipline.) Our Past Experience (you've carried wounds that keep you from being able to hear the discipline as a loving interaction) Our Culture (so many of us have bought into the cultural idea that you should be able to “live your truth” that we ignore when our truth needs to be reshaped) This brings me to a good point… How do you know which rebuke or discipline to listen to? 2. Tuning your ears for Wisdom Proverbs 15:31: "Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise." ILLUSTRATION: One of the weird things about being a pastor is you have hundreds of people who all have an opinion about how and what you should do and feel like it's their biblical mandate to let you know those things. Harmony actually is a very uncommon church and I don't get tons of this. But I've had more rebuke than you can imagine from the style of music a church uses, to the temperature of the thermostats, things I've said in a sermon, the way I dress, to a million other things. I'm sure I'm not alone in that You've got the same thing… the over-opinionated employee, that parent of your student who wants to tell you how to run your class, How do you know what to listen to and what not to listen to? b I love this proverb because it doesn't tell you to listen to ALL correction, it tells you to heed “life-giving” correction Learn from what is life-giving and discard the rest… b How do you know what's “life-giving” correction? b Here are the personal metrics I use to determine life-giving (I want at least 2 out of 3 of these to consider the correction): -Does the person bringing correction love Jesus? -Does the person love/want what's best for me? -Does the person love/want the best for the organization or mission? There are certainly other metrics you should use, but these will help you get where you need to go The key is to realize you don't have to take all corrections - but you can be wise in what you invite and who you invite to give you corrections.. ILLUSTRATION: If you tell me my sermon was a stinker I might listen. But if my wife or one of our elders says that to me, I'm going to for sure listen. Their known proximity to me, to Jesus, and love for this church would dictate that for me. Make sense? 3. Good leaders look for the person who grows from adversity Proverbs 19:20: "Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise." ILLUSTRATION: Early on in my career, I thought I had to be a know it all. I thought I had to have an answer for every problem. I had to always be on top of every situation. This unintentionally put me in a position of pretending and not being open to feedback. I've known a pretty large group of talented people who never progressed in their field simply due to their inability to take feedback and correction. How do you change that attitude? it takes two things: Take the pressure off: realize no one, including God, needs you to have everything together Address your ego: change from Edging God Out to Exalting God Only CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: You know, one of the little talked about things that Jesus did was to rebuke His disciples. At one point, He said to them, “are you still so dull?” like, “are you not even getting this stuff I'm talking about?” Another time, Peter said something that sounded SUPER spiritual and good and Jesus responded with “get behind me Satan, you don't have in mind the things of God, but of man” I want to bring this up to you at the end of this sermon not because I think I'm in some position to correct or discipline you or rebuke you, but because Jesus is still in the business of rebuking us - it's really a means by which He turns our hearts back to Himself. The scripture is clear that God uses hardship to discipline us - turn us back to Him. God cares way more about your discipleship than your comfort - He cares that you are looking more like Him than looking like what you want this life to look like. What would it look like for you to intentionally take a step to be willing to let God offend your modern sensibility? Because I promise you, the longer you follow Him, the more you will find the beauty of being seated with the wise and accepting the Lords discipline and rebuke! --------------

Our Ego. Just what is it - and what are the key roles this mystical entity serves as we navigate a healthy sense of self, and our overall well-being as humans? Our guest, Performance and Well-Being coach, Georgina Halabi explores the concept of ego and how it can be used to protect oneself from harm, but also how it can be used to transcend the self and connect to a higher consciousness. They discussed how wolves can be used as a metaphor for the ego and how it is important to study the behaviors of wolves to understand them better. They also discussed how the ego can be programmed to be whatever one wants it to be and how the higher self can be used to discern how to use the ego. According to modern researchers such as Loevinger, and Cook-Geuter; there are seven primary levels of ego development. Therefore, it's essential we ask these questions when considering the evolution of our ego development.  How do these levels of ego development affect our relationships?  The ego greatly influences our self - understanding. So, just what is the role of the ego in creating a healthy psychological state?  These are all questions we'll answer as we explore the landscape of ego development and its effect on our health and overall well-being.  Exploring the Relationship Between Ego and Identity Negativity as a Gift or Curse How we perceive things affects how they are Exploring Consciousness and the Ego in a Conversation Action Items: Digging deeper into the topic of ego Go and sit with your Egos Explore the idea of ego as a gatekeeper or overseer Explore deep meditation practices Credits: JOIN US ON INSTAGRAM: @thelightinsidepodcast SUBSCRIBE: pod.link/thelightinside Featured Guest: Georgina Halabi Credits: Music Score by Epidemic Sound Executive Producer: Jeffrey Besecker Mixing, Engineering, Production, and Mastering: Aloft Media Studio Senior Program Director: Anna Getz --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelightinside/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelightinside/support

In part 4 of the series given by J. Pittman McGehee, D.D. in April of 2004, Pittman describes the nature of the Jungian concept of the Self with a capital “S”. A synonym is God within, Buddha nature, Christ, etc. The Self occupies the center and circumference of our life which includes everything about us, conscious and unconscious including our shadow. Our Ego tends to take up residence in a safe corner with our attachments and ego defenses until we make the conscious effort to surrender to the urges of the Self. The Self will orchestrate accidents, illness, bankruptcy, divorce, etc. to get us to change. It's goal is to beckon us to become our whole self. Establishing our connection to this intrapsychic relationship (which Ed Edinger calls this the ego-Self axis) melds us to a transpersonal goal to become self-validating and true to ourselves. This empowers us in the arena of meaning, authenticity and our deepest truth. These audios are not the best but the content is so good, I felt it was worth it to publish them. Love is simple, it is Fear that is more difficult. Fear means we need to Grow Up and find ways to Let Go of our Fears. Love is an Opening of our Hearts. Love is the Essence of Life. We are often told that if we want something to Act like we have it. When it comes to Love, especially romantic Love, we all put on an Act to try and BE the person we believe the other person desires most. We wear these masks so that we can manipulate others to see what we want them to see and to hope they will BE what we want them to BE. Therein lies the problem. Love doesn't manipulate others. We often are just falling in Need, instead of LOVE. We do this in most relationships, because we have believed the Media's definition of Love. Unfortunately, our media doesn't realize how manipulative it is. Our Ego wants to BE right and has certain expectations. None of this is LOVE. We end out discussion with Compassion. We have no idea what others are experiencing. So if they do or are something we don't like, then what we need is Compassion and Acceptance. Compassion and Acceptance allows everyone to BE who they are. And who they are is Lovable. Love is simple, it is Who we Are. This Love is what we express to others. Love is Who we Are! Join us for this fascinating discussion! We're Getting to the Heart of what Matters!

The need to rise above the three modes of nature The material world has three modes of nature: goodness (Sattva), passion (Rajas), and ignorance (Tamas). It is these gunas that create and feed the Ego, which binds the divine soul to the physical body. These modes affect each individual differently, depending on their sanskaras, from previous lives. Shri Krishna will explain these gunas in depth in chapter 14. Our soul is a tiny spark of God, who is beyond these gunas. The Vedas provide many prescriptions for a person to progress from Tamas to Rajas to Sattva guna. Shri Kṛṣṇa is telling Arjuna to understand that the goal of all the teachings of the vedas is to realize this God, and that Arjuna needs to rise above these gunas and focus on self realization which will lead him towards God realization. How to rise above these gunas? Shri Krishna says: nirdvandvo nitya-sattva-stho niryoga-kṣhema ātmavān Nirdvandvo: Avoid getting disturbed by dualities of nature (earlier, Shri Krishna advised Arjuna to practice Samatvam, or calm mindedness). Nitya-sattva-stho: Always be established in sattva guna. Niryoga-kṣhema: Here, the term Yoga is used to mean “to acquire” and Kshema means “the efforts to preserve”. Our Ego keeps us busy acquiring various material things and then worrying about preserving them. Shri Krishna is advising that Arjuna should discipline his mind to not run behind things to acquire or worry about things to preserve, as we have to keep the Ego under check while on the path of self-realization. Also, acquiring and preserving are the manifestations of Rajo guna and Tamo guna and once we avoid these, we are able to establish ourselves in Sattva guna, which is a prerequisite for spiritual evolution. Atmavān: Focus on self-realization, A point to be noted is that we should not be reading the vedas and other spiritual texts with the intent of becoming a scholar of those texts. What is actually important is that we understand and implement the knowledge to attain self realization. This is what we termed as Nidhidhyasan previously. Shri Kṛṣṇa says that the Vedas are like a water tank, full of spiritual knowledge. But Self realization is like a flood of water. And when we are surrounded by a flood of water, we do not need a water tank. Similarly, we should approach the Vedas and all spiritual knowledge with the understanding that they are only a means to spiritual growth and self-realization. Once we achieve this realization, we no longer need these books or scriptures.

Live Life Extraordinary

Let's talk about how to show up in your life as the highest and best version of yourself AKA your soul self. We're going to demystify this idea that finding yourself and becoming yourself is something that you do outside of yourself, it's really a journey that you take in, of and with yourself. There are three levels of our being, I'm not talking about Body Mind Spirit, that's a conversation for a different time, I'm talking about the Ego, the Shadow and the Spirit. Together, we're going to break each of these down to have a better understanding of them and then we'll be talking about how you can start to align with your spirit more and how you can show up in your life as your spirit. The Shadow is all of the wounded aspects of yourself, every negative comment someone's made about you that makes you feel small, every limiting belief, every moment of feeling like you're not good enough. These thoughts/feelings can be something you're consciously aware of or it could be something you're unconsciously aware of. This can show up as self sabotage, people pleasing, perfectionism, etc. Next we have our Ego. Our ego's job is to protect the shadow, to protect us from experiencing more hurt, more discomfort, more pain. The Ego will do a lot of things to make sure this happens. One is to show up as perfect so no one knows about the painful aspects of ourselves. Another is casting judgment, because if we're judging, we get to project the hurt and pain before it hits us. The Ego is responsible for all of the fear we experience. Fear can be both a good thing and a bad thing, our ego doesn't know the difference between the fear of doing uncomfortable (but good) things for ourselves and the fear of a life or death situation (aka survival). Our Ego is always self-sabotaging us, whether we recognize it or not. The final layer of our being is our spirit. Our soul is pure unconditional Consciousness, pure unconditional love, pure unconditional Joy. We are Spiritual Beings living a Human Experience, which means we all have a spirit but sometimes it's so deep within us that it feels like we can't access it. This happens because of our life experiences, pain, hurt, trauma, liming beliefs, etc. To protect us our Ego puts up these walls of judgment, of attack, of fear, of manipulation. It thinks that it's protecting us but really it's just separating us from our authentic self. We show up in our lives in one of two ways, one is out of love and one is out of fear. When we show up in the world in alignment with fear, we are showing up in alignment with our ego, when we show up in alignment with love, we are showing up in alignment with our soul self. You can make two exact same decisions with different energy behind them. To be your soul self, acknowledge how you are showing up in your life, is it with love or is it with fear? Practice quieting the ego (lovingly), healing your shadow & create space for your soul to show up in the world. The Ego has a bad rap — it has become the villain of self-help. According to psychologists, if we don't have an ego, we would become mentally ill. We need it to mediate between the unconscious and the conscious. Your relationship with your Ego can turn into either an enemy or an ally. In other words, your Ego is not you, but we often completely identify with our Ego as Self. Ego is a structure built of a lifetime of experience, disappointment, pain, love, excitement and connection – whatever we experienced in our childhoods, both good and bad. Our Ego is a curious beast — most of us don't realize its existence, yet we are under its mercy. So, this week we explore how to explore Ego gently and to shift it to its rightful place as part of our Being rather than the illusion that it is the whole of our Being.

It was sung by one of the many hair rock bands that the late 1980's built. This song talked about an individual who was all EGO.  Someone who wouldn't listen to advice. Our Ego feeds us what we want to hear and we chase the shiny objects until the day it comes back to us.  For me the day of reckoning came last year when I made an attempt on my life. I learned my lessons and as the song goes - a little modesty would suit you better.  Once I gave it a try I rose once again after remembering who I am.  The bigger they are the harder the fall and I fell.  My friend who will alway be a part of me - Kid Ego is now put to rest because of who I really am is "Uncle Dave". Today I'll be talking about something that I’ve seen happening to many immigrants, especially the ones who come to Canada after having a successful career in their home country. Our EGO. Hello everyone, so the topic today is related to our ego. In simple words, without getting into psychology or other fields where I’m not an expert. The ego is simply put as an inflated feeling of pride that makes us stand out when we compare ourselves to others. So, having an ego is not a bad thing, it can help us realize our accomplishments, make us feel confident when taking on new challenges like a new job that we might have never performed but we believe we can do it. However, taking it to the extreme, it can be a bad thing. Have you ever heard that someone has a big ego? Like those people at work that even though they may have a lower title than you think they are better than you and everyone around them? I’m sure we all have at least one of those at our offices, I know I do. But, when you move to a new country, your ego plays a big role. I’ve seen people very frustrated after months or even years in Canada because they haven’t been able to get a job. When we talk about it, I always ask them what do they do? And most, if not every time, they tell me they are Directors or Vice Presidents of something. If I’ve learned anything after living in Toronto for almost 8 years is that it doesn’t matter what you did back in your home country, it doesn’t matter if you were the VP of Sales. You’ll be lucky if you get an entry-level position in your field. There are many skills that companies here look for, a lot of them are hard-skills. But some are soft-skills and, especially for middle and upper management positions, those are key. Let me give you an example. Before I moved to Toronto, I was a Senior Project Manager managing a huge project. The budget was over 6 million dollars and I had to coordinate with teams all over the world. I managed the budget, scope, timelines, resources, etc. Everything! When I came to Canada as a student and tried to find an internship at a company, no one cared if I had managed such a big project. I thought it looked great in my resume, for sure, I was really proud of it. It was the biggest project I’ve ever managed and I had metrics and everything to show that it had been successful. When the time came to start looking for internship opportunities, I was so confident that I would get anyone I wanted that I decided to be very picky about the positions. I was certain that any of the companies would fight to have an intern like me. But, that was not the case. My ego had led me to believe that I was better than I really was. My ego held me back from applying for all internships and only picking three of them. After almost a month of not receiving any response, I started to worry. I didn’t understand why a company wouldn’t want me if I was so good! So I sought council with one of my professors and he saw my resume and said, this is not what companies are looking for. They are looking for a recent grad with almost no experience. That’s why they’re not calling you. I have to say I was shocked. My ego had grown so much, that something so small as not finding an internship hurt me so deep that made me question my professional life. Fortunately, a couple of weeks before the deadline, I secured an internship with a not-so-good company, but at that point, I had no option. I had to say yes or I wouldn’t be able to move to the next term of the certificate. Had I been less cocky and left my ego on the side, maybe I would have landed a better internship. Somewhere where I could have learned something, instead of wasting months of my life copying and pasting data from excel to PowerPoint. But I wasn’t, and I learned my lesson. After I left that company, I searched for jobs and decided to be open to interviewing for Junior Project Manager or even Project Coordinator positions.

In this beautiful and brilliant biography we get his insights into the transformation of Gandhi the man into the Mahatma or "great soul." As per the sub-title of the book, we learn “How one man changed himself to change the world.” Big Ideas we explore include why/how it all starts with being the change, the power of satyagraha (= soul-force!), making history (by ignoring historians), Gandhi and sugar (and fuel for his soul engine), the call to action (to be moral warriors), and "my life is my message" (what's yours?). EP 362: Our Ego and Our Authentic Self

Showing Up To Life

Our Ego - the image we have of ourselves that we show the world - is mostly based on the patterns and implicit biases we develop in the very early stages of our lives. These patterns and biases, instead of being formed intentionally, are created unconsciously by our parents, teachers, coaches, etc. It becomes the model by which we judge ‘the right way to be.' But all this influence is not simply unconscious. It is really unconsciously passed down through several generations before us. For this reason, this thing we call our ego is often very detached and dissonant from what is our authentic self. And the more dissonance, the greater levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and addiction issues we are likely to experience. Also, the more dissonance, the less happiness, and satisfaction we will know. Would you like to intentionally align with your authentic self?

Piggybacking off of Episode 2, Corissa dives a little deeper into the mind. With ~60,000 thoughts each day & 95% of them being subconscious thoughts from the past, she introduces the Ego and Inner Child parts of our minds. Our Ego and Inner Child shape the personalities we create as children & stories we tell ourselves over and over to survive in life. Corissa gets vulnerable & shares the stories she's told herself since she was a young girl. Unmet needs from Corissa’s Inner child causes her Ego to attach to thoughts like, “I’m not good enough.” “I’m not pretty enough.” “If they don’t see me... If they don’t hear me... I won’t be loved.” “I need to win.” “I need to achieve.” “I must be the best.” “I need to be funny.” “I have to be pretty.” “If I don’t have and be all of these things, I am not good enough. I won’t be loved.” ALL STORIES. ALL UNTRUE. ALL SUBCONSCIOUS.Learning this creates power. When we can practice and learn to separate ourselves from our subconscious mind and Ego, we can begin to feel & fully step into our power, our freedom & discover TRUE self-confidence.EP3 SHOW NOTES: 2:20 - Recapping from Episode 2 with some conscious and subconscious mind stuffsss. 3:10 - Introducing the Ego and Inner Child within our subconscious minds.5:10 - Creation of our Ego due to unmet needs as children in order to “survive” in life.7:00 - How the Ego protects the Inner child. How to deal with your racist family and friends I was asked by a good friend to do a podcast episode on the topic of how not to get triggered by our racist friends and family. We can all agree that we are a very divided country – we’ve been for a long time. And it doesn’t help that many people cling so tightly to their beliefs, don’t take responsibility and blame others which create a bigger chasm between us.   You may think of me as a calm yoga teacher, but I’m a very sensitive and emotional person. I cry a lot and can fly off the handle easily, especially when I deal with people I deem ignorant or mean.     I think that’s why discussing politics, religion, race, sex or anything that is highly emotionally charged can be so confrontational, causing feuds at family gatherings.   Right now, we are going through some major historical events: this global pandemic: those who are worried about health and those who are worried about businesses, racial protests and riots – those who support black lives and those who support macy’s. the fight for the rights of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) people -- some may totally be on board with equality and others not so much.   Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but how do we NOT get triggered by those opinions that differ from ours?   I hate to break it to you, but you’ll never get rid of triggers, nor will you be able to stop the other person from triggering you.   Today on the podcast I’ll share with you 5 ways that help me deal with people who trigger the F out of me and see their different beliefs as portals to my own growth.   Triggers are teachers. In episode 80 I talk all about triggers. Triggers are all around us. We can’t avoid being activated by someone or something.   You know you’ve aligned with your ego when you feel inferior or superior to someone else. You’re stuck in comparison or judgement.   Rather than pointing the finger and being upset with that person, what are you learning about yourself and about them?   Our relationships are direct portals to our wounds, and awareness of our triggers can be portals to our growth.   If we can view our triggers as our greatest teachers, we can then heal our inner world to affect our outer world.   Ironically, we are most often highly triggered by those we care about or are closest to.   The challenging work is to watch and witness your thoughts. Most of our thoughts are recycled from our conditioned thinking.   We are triggered when the reality is not how we think it should be.    When I feel resentment, offended, hurt, or any kind of hot emotion, it’s an opportunity to turn inward, not lash outward.   Sit with the sensation so that the boiling emotion comes to a simmer.   Trying to avoid the sensation just creates more suffering.    In fact, reality has no emotional charge. The present moment is what it is. An event. A feeling. Some words. An action.   It’s us humans that create the emotional charge behind reality. Something about that thing activates something within.   Taking responsibility for how you show up and changing your beliefs by watching your thought patterns lead to freedom.   Anything that causes you to be in an emotional state is your spiritual teacher. Invite them in.   Detach from the outcome: How do you detach from the outcome when you’re triggered, hurt and outraged at a friend’s beliefs and actions? It’s hard.   This is the work, my friend.   Detaching doesn’t mean you avoid the conversation or become numb or check out.   One of my favorite quotes is “When you’re upset, don’t eat.” Wait. No. That’s for another episode.   My favorite quote by Bryron Katie that I live by, especially when I’m triggered is, "There's your business, Other people's business and God's Business"   Most of the time I’m in someone else’s business that’s out of my control.   We spend too much energy replaying someone else’s actions and trying to influence someone else’s life, when in reality it’s their life and their choice of how they want to show up. We have no control over them.   Detach from the idea of converting anyone. You will never change anyone by forcing your own opinion and criticisms on them.   These battles about race, politics, humanity, and equality or any other disagreement are like a game of tug-of-war, where our Egos hold so tightly to what we believe to be true.   The more you pull and think you’re right, the harder the other person pulls to prove their right.   But…If you let go, you win.   The Ego wants to be right. Our heart wants to be understood.   Intentionally listening Ok so if you get that triggers can be teachers and you’re working on letting go, how do you make peace with the other person who is upsetting you?   LISTEN. Intentionally listen.   Rather than mentally formulating your next objection before the other person has finished their sentence, listen with the intention to hear their view. I know this is hard, especially when steam is fuming out of your ears and your heart is seething with rage. Come back to step 1. Triggers are your teachers. Right now, your teacher is guiding you to generously listen.   Instead of speaking AT your friend, speak to what she said so you can have a constructive conversation and learn from both ways vs locking down and having a blowup fight.   Just like you have particular beliefs that you’ve learned, she has too.   When you can detach from trying to change your friend or family, and can listen to understand their viewpoint and learn their background behind their beliefs, you will learn something about them you never knew.   I saw this on @southasians4blacklives and loved this point: Instead of calling them out, call them in Our Ego wants to be right, by trying to convert them, or point out their flaws and prove why they’re wrong or how they’re a bad person. This only makes the other person defend who they are even harder.   No one wants to feel judged, wrong or unimportant.   Once you take the tug out of the tug-of-war, they feel seen, understood and significant.   Everyone wants that.   When they feel seen and heard, they’ll be more open to listening to you too. Their wall to defend themselves has come down a bit, and so has yours.   Sometimes they won’t be open or they’re just rude to the core, and, you know what, that’s a different choice (like a long term) choice you may need to make about your relationship and the boundaries you extend to that person.   But if they’re in your life to stay, like your good friend or a family member, and if you think they’re a good person and you would like to keep them in your life, why not make it pleasant as possible and stay open to learn from each other.   So instead of calling them out, call them in. Rather than pointing out their shortcomings, share with them your personal experiences, your own blind spots and what you have learned that they may not know.   By focusing on you and inviting them in to see your vulnerability and transformation, this may help them be less defensive and more open to learning about their own blind spots.   Hopefully by staying open and communicating from your heart space of loving on them, instead of your Ego that wants to perfect and prove, they also become teachers and share what they learn with others.   See this is as practice In Sanskrit Svadyaya means “self-study.”   The real yoga starts when you leave your mat and get into the world.   Each step forward is really just a step deeper into yourself.   Every relationship is a mirror to teach us something about yourself.   Instead of preaching, controlling or forcing your opinion, see these moments of fury as opportunities to stay open, intentionally listen so you can learn about the other person (and about yourself) and fine tune your communication skills   By sharing from your heart, rather from the Ego, your light will inspire them to do the same.   And if it doesn’t, then you will have changed for the better because of it   This is the real Yoga.   to stay present to the simmer pause in stillness, listen with intention to hear both sides, study yourself so you can know yourself and speak from your heart and be the change you wish to see in the world.   I love hearing from you on my blog + instagram! How has this helped you?   If it has helped, I appreciate you sharing this with your friends.

To pray without ceasing is to align yourself with the will of God, to seek that will and to create a harmony in your pursuits. #1 Pray Always; #2 Never give up; And #3 Keep the Faith. Always. Things mentioned in this episode: E Stanley Jones said, Prayer is surrender -- surrender to the will of God and cooperation with that will. If I throw out a boathook from the boat and catch hold of the shore and pull, do I pull the shore to me or do I pull myself to the shore? Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God. “Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God.” Science has proven that everything that exists is made up of the same energy. Regardless of its physical form, its essence is that life giving energy, or the soul that connects us all. Power is found when you are doing your Ego rather than your Ego doing you. When we align our Ego with the God within us and the God outside of us, we find our flow state. Our Ego allows us to have the human experience and to remember who we truly are. They are not opposed to one another fundamentally. We have a God within us that is made up of energy and God outside of us that is also making up all that exists apart from us. We need to seek harmony with all of that energy. When I am fully present in the moment, I can feel the energy all around me, guiding me on the correct path. Praying without ceasing is living in alignment with truth and being fully present. Pray always. This can be giving thanks or expressing a request. To pray is to live in relationship with God. This is like any relationship, or like learning any skill. It takes time, focus, and devotion to advance that relationship. One must speak as well as listen to have a true relationship. Never give up! Be careful of the stories in your mind that attempt to derail you. Martin Luther said, “Pray as if everything depends on God, then work as if everything depends on you.” When you are clear on God's will for your life and you stay focused on that will, the work is in the alignment with that truth. Keep the faith. This means staying in that place of being the observer / chooser. It is in maintaining alignment with truth and allowing God's timing to work instead of trying to use the Ego's timing. Sometimes the tough times are the very lesson or shift that is needed to achieve the greatness intended in God's will. Lean into those times and embrace the process. When you commit to these 3 actions, you commit to being in alignment with God. And, you commit to a life of peace, purpose, and profit. Consider joining my Facebook community, called Shift. You can find it at www.ajamyx.com/commnity. And, pray without ceasing… Never give up… and Keep the faith!

Your Expectations of Reality are Not Reality

Usually when I’m upset with someone, it’s because I have expectations of how they “should” be. But is that real pure love? Is that reality? Or is it just my perspective of reality? During our valentines weekend, Jake went skiing Saturday and Monday, so Sunday was our day for quality family time and for this momma to get a break. I ended up doing a mix of taking care of the baby and we didn’t get quality time together. I was upset, felt used, and unloved because it didn’t go the way I wanted. He thought the day went well. Are we on freaking different planets?! How could we experience the same day but have the opposite perspectives of how the day went? He thought taking care of the baby for 2 hours while I did errands and got a rushed 20-minute workout was enough and going for a walk in the park together constituted quality family time. I just wanted was to lock myself in the bedroom and read my book – by myself and go wine tasting and eat pizza in the afternoon as a family.  These are very different scenarios. I was resentful, bitter and upset the whole day. When the day was pretty much over, I was still fuming. My one day off to spend together was wasted. I took a shower and some deep breaths and invited my bitterness in.  When I viewed these negative emotions as a teacher, it led me to realize I had expectations of him and the day. I was blaming him the whole day, but it was my fault for feeling disappointed and upset because I never communicated my expectations of what I wanted our day to be like.  Those triggers taught me I needed to own my responsibility for my expectations of him and to communicate my feelings and what I wanted. It wasn’t fair to him to make the unreasonable expectation that he should know what I want and read my mind. I was the one who ruined my day. I had turned it into a story. Anyone else been there too making something into everything?  I had created turmoil in my world by placing my own expectations on reality. Our Ego loves to point the finger, but that doesn’t created healing. Once I lovingly communicated my feelings and took responsibility for having unreasonable expectations and judgements, Jake openly heard me and we had a great rest of the evening. It’s very empowering when you see how your thoughts become your story and know you can choose how you want to show up in the world.  The reality is: You have no control over others. You have no control of the outcome. You have no control over anything outside yourself. You only have control of yourself. Taking responsibility shifts the blame from someone else to taking responsibility for your thoughts and beliefs. Taking responsibility for your own internal state is empowering and leads to freedom and ease in life and your relationships Meditation is a great tool, that if practiced consistently can help you watch your crazy thoughts and how you actually create turmoil in your world by placing your own expectations on reality, instead of seeing reality for exactly as it is. So, my invitation for you this week: when you’re in resentment, offended or hurt by someone, see it as an opportunity to turn inward, not lash outward, to view how your expectations of how that person should be is really just a story you’re telling yourself and is not coming from a place of love. Your expectations of reality are the cause of your suffering of what is really occurring.  You have the power to create your reality by shifting your expectations of it. Always loving hearing from you on IG or the blog: www.audreysuttonmills.com

Our mind’s job is to stay busy. To protect. To analyze. To make sense of things But when our mind runs wild, it can take us into places that aren’t good for us. Byron Katie says, there's “Your Business, Other People’s Business and God’s Business.” Our Ego loves to be right, so it compares us to others. We judge others, we worry about others – their opinions, their actions. How they wronged us, how this person should do something different than what we want, worrying over someone and their choices. We have no control over other people. These stories of others play over and over in our head exhausting our energy. It’s Wasted time of energy. Makes us small. When I tell someone “I just want you to be happy, you should do this, I wish He was like this, I care about you that why I tell you should do X,” this is me getting into someone else’s business. Gossiping about someone is an obvious way we are getting into someone else’s business. It’s low level energy and does absolutely nothing for our soul. In fact, it depletes it with judgement, negativity and smallness. But even sharing information about someone else’s life is a way, our minds keep us busy. I used to talk about other people because I didn’t think I had much to share about myself and it made me feel important that I knew what was going on with other people’s lives. It’s not productive or important. I have no control over it. We worry about things that are in God’s hands – call it source, the universe – things like the weather, catastrophes, life and death. Things we have no control over. We spend our energy on these things and they actually can sway our feelings and moods. Think about it: the weather is rainy, so it ruins your day. YOUR day? Or you get angry over a catastrophe and let your mind ruminate over it for days. Or the injustice of something that is completely out of your control. While it’s good to feel your feelings, worrying about anything that you don’t have direct control over is futile. It causes conflict in your mind. It keeps you stuck in business that is exhausting. The only thing we have control over is ourselves. Our thoughts, actions, words. When you focus your energy on what YOU do have control over, life shifts and your perspective changes. You no longer need to feel in resistance to what’s going on in life. you can feel, accept and let go. You no longer need to feel like a victim, because you know you have the power of your thoughts, choice and actions. You no longer need to hold on to resentments and judgement. You can be free to let people be who they are, and you focus on you. I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty liberating! I’ve let other people, my grudges, opinions, the weather, outside circumstances control me, because I’ve been trying to control it. The Invitation this week is to notice when your mind drifts to putting in energy somewhere that you don’t have any control. Check in with yourself and see if this is a good place for your energy. Is it the most productive and healthy place to spend your thought? Redirect it to only things you have control over. This will help refocus your mind from mindless chatter, what ifs, worry, fear and comparison. It will help you step into your authentic power of what you DO have control over. This is ultimate power, this is ultimate love, this ultimate living in the present moment.

What if we could recreate school all over again? What if there were no more lectures, or worksheets? What if school became a place where students could create their day as they saw fit? These were the kinds of questions asked by Sycamore High School, which set out to create the Synnovation Lab – a modern, self-paced learning environment that encourages students to take full ownership of their education. Off the back of reading Game Changers by Dave Asprey, we’ve been noodling over the top life priorities that came from interviewing 450 successful leaders on Bulletproof Radio. Perhaps surprisingly, the aggregated data suggested the Top Priorities for life success were (1) Nutrition, (2) Relationships, (3) Self-Awareness, (4) Exercise and (5) Sleep. 100% aligned with our priorities at AdapNation, and great to see the fundamentals are considered the most impactful to success.   That said, we’ve not covered Relationships in much detail on the podcast. We'll interview real estate professionals, local business owners, and special guests from right here in the Houston community. This is where you get the inside scoop about what's new in real estate, new community openings and business openings and much more. The Houston Home Talk Show starts right now.[00:32] JAMES: All right guys welcome. What's up? This is James J. Welcome to Houston Home Talk. I am excited today to have my man Mike Wall from Dayton, Ohio. What's up Mike? How are you today?[00:43] MIKE: Yes sir. Baby, I'm so happy to be here, man. I'm so happy to help. We'll be able to drop some value on your audience today, brother.[00:50] JAMES: Yeah. Listen, I have been watching you now for several months as you have been doing a lot of interviews with a lot of the new people that have been moving over to EXP Realty. I want to say thank you because a lot of the content that you've been providing, I know I've used, I forwarded it to people and I know that the value that you're providing is helpful to a lot of people. You and I met in New Orleans last month. I've been watching you for several months. As soon as we met, there was several people that came up to you and said, hey, thanks Mike. I know you're reaching people. [01:21] MIKE: Yeah.[01:22] JAMES: You're helping people because a lot of people can't do what you're doing in the way that you do it so thank you for that. I wanted to ask you so I want to just start, so you've been doing a lot of these interviews, a lot of Facebook Live interviews. I want to get people introduced you. I want to ask you real quick, what's been the response from other people to the interviews that you've been doing with the new people that have joining EXP?[01:42] MIKE: Yeah. No, it's a great question man. It's really been overwhelming more than I even thought and really the whole reason if I back up and just telling you the reason why I started doing the podcast… [01:52] JAMES: Right.[01:53] MIKE:…is because I knew that we were building something special. I also knew that changes is big. Change is big for everybody involved and especially the for those people who are team leaders in running a business. I wanted to give those people a platform to be able to share their unique story with the world and in hopes that somebody out there might identify with them and be able to make an intelligent decision about where their business went and then also providing a detailed roadmap for change if they decided to move their business over to EXP. Then also kind of lastly is just to provide insight on people curious about learning more about EXP.[02:34] JAMES: Right? Yeah. Let's get to know a little bit about you because I know you have been in the business. You've been licensed for about 16 years or so. You started full time…was it 2014 when you were officially started full time? [02:45] MIKE: I did it. I got a unique story. I've had my license since 2002. I actually got into the business just as a buyer specialist for one of the top agents here in our marketplace. A guy named Phil Herman who worked for Remax is a big deal man. The guy was selling like 300 properties back like when nobody knew about teams. When I got into the business I just thought, man, I don't want to try to learn all this on my own. What I'll do is I'll take a little bit less of a commission split to go under somebody who actually has all the knowledge for what I want to do, right? I worked with Phil 2002 to 2009 and we all know what happened in 2008-2009. The market just completely crashed.I actually got out of real estate. I kept my license but I went to work back in corporate America and I did that for five years. I was working for a company that was based out of Blue Ash, which is a suburb of Cincinnati and I was selling copiers, man. It is a grind doing that. I did that for five years. I knew I wouldn't do that long term and I knew I would get into real estate. [03:43] JAMES: Right. [03:44] MIKE: In 2013 in about October, I started calling the expires in 2013. In 2014 May I had 44 listings and I went to my wife and I said, honey, it's costing me more to be at my corporate job than it is to be here in real estate. She said, you know what? She said, do your thing man. That first year went out and sold 57 houses. Second year in the business, sold 104 houses, third year sold 187 houses and then fourth year I sold 309 houses. I just haven't looked back, man. There's so much obviously that goes in between there because now you know, I'm operating as a team. I've got some great team members. I got a great business partner now. We've opened up a whole world with investing and so forth.[04:30] JAMES: Now let me touch on this because it seems pretty simple. One of the things that I love about you is the consistency. I know you've been doing a lot of live coaching calls. Obviously you've been doing this for several years, calling the expires. [04:41] MIKE: Yup.[04:43] JAMES: One of the things that I tell a lot of new agents is what you think, because everybody just assumes everybody's calling the expires. I've heard you mentioned this in the video, a lot of people will stop calling after the fourth time or even a third time in a lot of cases. Obviously you were consistent. What made you focus on the expires? Because as a new agent, that's one of the things that I always tell people to do. Focus on expires. You can get that information and just keep consistent, stay consistent with it. What made you start? What was the thing that kind of got you to focus on the expires when you first started?[05:17] MIKE: Yeah. No man. That's a legitimate question because if you think about it, I mean everybody's good at something, right? Everybody can always make up the excuse that I'm not good at something and typically it's because they either don't have the experience or they're just not willing to try. For me, when I moved here, I went to high school and was raised mostly in to Dallas, Fort Worth area. I moved to Ohio and went to college at Ohio State. Go Bucks. I met my wife there and my wife was from this small town, which is a Northern Cincinnati, Southern Dayton suburb called Springboro. I didn't have a personal network. I didn't have a lot of people that I could tap into. I just thought, well, what is the next best thing? I knew I could grind it out on the phones because I had done in B to B sales selling copiers, right?[06:03] JAMES: Right. [06:05] MIKE: There's no science behind it, man. I just did it. You talked about consistency and that's, that's really what it was. It's just doing it. It's repetitions in the gym, right? It's like every day you show up. You put in your reps. You work hard, and then the magic starts to happen, man.[06:20] JAMES: Right. Yeah. That consistency thing is very difficult, especially for us because there's no one to tell us to do anything.[06:27] MIKE: Right.[06:29] JAMES: Everyone wants to get in the business, but then lacking the discipline to do what you did for three years and still continue to do to this day with the Expires. It's something tells you is you have a schedule and you got to work. It's hard to do. It is hard because stuff comes up. It's hard to stay consistent. If you really want to make it and you're a prime example, everybody that's calling these Expires, they're not doing it consistently. They just don't. I know it. In Houston, it's the same thing. We've got 30,000 agents here. We've got a lot of expires but of that 30,000 there's only a handful of people that are actually consistent with it. As a matter of fact you knew that and you stuck with it and clearly it works.[07:09] MIKE: I want your audience to understand something too James is that the great thing about calling the Expires is not everyone's is going to say yes, right? We are fortunate enough to work in an industry where the margins, if you do get a yes, are very large, and I always tell my team this, right? We live in a market in southwest Ohio here where the average price point is not really high, right? Our team average sale price is $178,000. Our market. Average sale price is $130,000 but you can still make a six figure income here if you just get one yes, every week because our agents average commission check is 25.50 and if you take 25.50 and divide that out over 50 weeks, you've got a nice income, right?[07:48] JAMES: Absolutely, yeah.[07:50] MIKE: Really we just focus…we have our team focus on that one yes per week, right? We understand when we pick up the phone that the odds are against us, right? We understand that most people are not going to answer the phone and if they answer, most people are not going to set an appointment. We understand also that if we do get somebody to answer it, if we do get somebody to say yes, then we got a shot at a six figure income.[08:10] JAMES: Absolutely. Yeah, and you know there's a couple of books I've got but the go for no is one. Darren Hardy, I love Darren Hardy. December is going to be here tomorrow and I bring this up because his book talks about the format. There's this habit, habit, habit, habit and what he used to do when he was in real estate back in the day, he would just look for no's. The more no's you get, you're just closer to that yes. At some point somebody is going to say yes and I'm a huge Darren…the compound effect. That's what that's saying in the book, compound effect. I love that book. Usually we'll bring it up every single year around this time of year and I go through it and I'll operates during the year because it's a great book about the discipline of habits. In this business. it is key to everything is self-discipline to be able to, to continue to do that. Props to you on that. Now I wanted to ask you, so I heard in the interview that you had mentioned that you had back when you started full time back '04, 2014-2015. I guess a couple of years into it. You switch from the wall group over to love Ohio living, LOL team.[09:05] MIKE: I did. I did.[09:07] JAMES: Explain why did you did that? I think I know the answer. I wanted my audience to understand why did you do that? Why did you think that was important to get your name off the brand and brand it to level high live in which you did.[09:18] MIKE: Yeah. No, that's a great question. There's arguments for both sides. For me personally, I thought it was more sustainable to build a business that didn't have my name on it. I didn't think people would sustainably work to build my business. I thought that together, if we formed something that we could all believe in and all row the same direction, that didn't have my name on it. In another words, it's like a football team, right? If you think of the Dallas cowboys, right? Who did beat the Saints last night which…[09:50] JAMES: Yes, they did. Yeah.[09:51] MIKE: if you think of the Dallas Cowboys, they're not called the Jerry Jones, right? They're called the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones owns the cowboys, but everybody has their respective position for the Dallas cowboys. When they come together, they make a team, right? I wanted to do is I wanted to take the level how living team and I wanted to galvanize everybody around that. What that stood for was elite level agents being able to plug their businesses in to our tool systems and resources to go out and sell as many houses as they want. Not, they plugged into Mike Wall and just took every, all my leftovers, right? Because there is a team model that works that way and I just don't believe it's sustainable. The statistics show, I mean, the shelf life on those type of a team, the shelf life of the agent is much lower, right? Because what happens is they come in, in most cases and they build them up and then those agents, they want to go do the same thing whereas now we have an agent on our team. It's like Natalie Rose, right? Is an agent on our team? It's Natalie Rose with the level higher living team at a power broker by EXP Realty, right? Her name goes on the sign. We just have our LOL logo. Frankly, it's not that I would ever sell my business, but if you think of it like this, James who's going to buy Mike Wall real estate without Mike Wall.[11:09] JAMES: Yeah. [11:10] MIKE: You know what I mean? [11:11] JAMES: Now you're, you're right on. That's a key when we talk about marketing branding because I f struggled with that as well earlier and having my name. I agree with you completely. I think the buy in from your team is much more when you have LOL Level Higher Living. I love that you did that. That's a key. That's a nugget for people to really look at that because like you say there's arguments both ways. I'm actually on board with you as far as the branding and not having your name attached to it for the long term, long term that's a great idea. Good information there. Let me ask you, so from all the interviews that you've been doing with a lot of the EXP Agents that have been mourning, it's been absolutely crazy the growth that we've had. You joined back, was it February of this year is when you guys moved over? [11:55] MIKE: Yes sir, it'd be a year. [11:58] JAMES: Montel Williams, you moved over. What's been the best or the most surprising thing, specifically from the people that you have interviewed? Because I don't know if you've got to off the top of your head how many people you've interviewed since you started the show.[12:10] MIKE: Probably around 20, 25 at this point.[12:13] JAMES: Okay. Okay. What's been maybe one of the biggest surprises or maybe common similarities? Because everybody's story's a little different. I probably have watched virtually every video interview that you've done. Everybody's story just a little bit different. What have you found that maybe something that's maybe been similar from a lot of the people that you've spoken to? [12:30] MIKE: Yeah. I have them. Something instantly pops to mind and because it really not only has it surprised me that this is what I've learned from them. It is something that we never expected when we came over. I'm learning now when I talked to people in those interviews is that it's the same thing for them, right? What I'm learning is that the community. It's the community that we've created. It's the people that now we're able to tap into, right? Because like Jay Kinder and Mike Reese, the NEA group, right? They used to run this mastermind that was like a $25,000 buy in, right? Now they're doing that mastermind for free. [13:09] JAMES: Yeah. [13:10] MIKE: Right? We're talking about Kinder was the number one, number two guy for COA banker in the world at one time, right? He's one of the smartest guys in real estate. When you're able to plug in to those guys like I could shoot him a text right now and get a response from him, right? The same thing with Kyle Whistle, the same thing with Dan Beer. I mean we're talking about some of the biggest real estate teams and smartest real estate minds in the business. For me that was the biggest surprise man, is the fact that now we've created this fantastic community of learning and sharing and just growth and excitement, man. That's an easy answer for me. [13:50] JAMES: Yeah, you and I, we've got a lot of similar circles as far as NEA. I've been with NEA probably since 2011. Actually, back then it was just Kinder-Reese. I've been following Jay for years. He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Yes, I also coached with them him well. You're right. When now you've gotten to exponential growth summit back in the day. [14:06] MIKE: I never did go to that believe it or not. Yeah, I never went.[14:12] JAMES: Okay.[14:13] MIKE: I coached with NEA. I didn't exponential growth. [14:17] JAMES: Right. The funny thing now is that with EXP, with all these big name ages moving over, and you're right, the community and the collaboration. I know we keep using these words over. It's true. When you're in it and you and I were here where we both are at EXPN. We've been able to see it. The fact that you're right that I could call Jay right now. I've paid thousands and thousands of dollars to Jay to coach me. Now that same information, I could still get it and get access to him with literally just picking up the phone right now. That's been one of the biggest, pleasant things that I've seen as well. For a lot of people that are not, or maybe looking at the opportunity right now other than the collaboration, what else is maybe been one of the things that's been a plus for you? [15:03] MIKE: What I want to add to that real quick is that I don't want people to take that for granted because a lot of people I think represent EXP the wrong way. You're trying to get people, you're calling people that you don't know and you're trying to get them to move for revenue share or stock. That's not enough to get people to move. It's like you need to figure out what if we understand at the end of the day, right? That map is more valuable than the treasure. Then you understand that that knowledge that you can get through collaboration, that's where the treasure is, right? That's the map to the treasure. To be able to collaborate with those guys in a mastermind group. These guys are doing stuff at a level that we just haven't thought of or haven't gotten to in our businesses yet. For that person out there who's doing $10 million or $20 million a year that wants to get to 20 million or 40 million or a 100 million, right. The difference between them, where they're at right now and where they want to be is that roadmap, right? When you join EXP, you're able to tap into that right away, right, through the collaboration and relationships that you'll build here. I wanted to make sure that your audience was crystal clear on that because although revenue share is fantastic and the opportunity to be an owner through stock is fantastic. It's not the only reason you should join EXP, right?[16:28] JAMES: Yeah. No question about it. Yeah. I think the excitement around it is just because it hasn't been done this way before. [16:33] MIKE: Yeah. [16:37] JAMES: You start looking at the opportunity down the road. I could not agree with you more, Mike. That component of EXP has gotten a lot of publicity. I think as far as representing EXP, a lot of people would probably get a little turned off because everybody's talking about the revenue shift. You are right. That's not really for me the number one reason. It is the fact that you get to collaborate. You and I would not be talking right now. We aren't talking right now if it wasn’t for EXP. I wouldn't be able to call collar or anybody for that matter. It's genuine. When we went to the EXP con last month it's genuine. People are just really willing to help you with whatever because it does benefit us all when we all succeed. Where it used to be you have freinemies and you interviewed with Tammy yesterday?[17:25] MIKE: Tammy was day before. You're talking about Mary Simons Malone. I love them so much. Yes, she was frienemies with Kyle Whistle, right? They worked at competing brokerages in San Diego. She talked about that too with the collaboration now with Dan and Kyle who were formerly her biggest competition, right?[17:44] JAMES: Yeah, Yeah. Huge, huge, huge, huge. That's awesome. Couple more questions for you Mike, before I let you get on out of here. Again, you said the response from people because I saw people coming up to you and we're at the EXP last month which is pretty cool. As we were in the middle of talking,[17:59] MIKE: Let me one more thing James before because I know you asked me and I'll try not to be too long winded here. I want to make sure that people understand the value of what the model at EXP has to offer no matter where you're at in your business because you asked also what was another thing that I had learned or what was another reason that we moved and what we learned through our move, and I'm hearing back from obviously a lot of these team leaders in our interviews is the fact that I had a decision to make personally when I moved. We were opening up our own market center. We had approval through KWRI. We were opening. In fact, that market center has now opened without me. Right? [18:34] JAMES: Okay. [18:35] MIKE: Some other person or group came in and took my place. I was supposed to be an owner at that market center and EXP was put into my lap, right? We had a decision to make right away and that decision was, do I move forward with my plans with Keller Williams to open this market center, right? Or do I move my team to EXP? I'll tell you what it came down to. It came down to what was better for my team, right? Ultimately the reason why EXP want one out is because the move to Keller Williams would have been a lateral move. Actually it would have been a worst move for them because the CAP was going up at the new office. It would have only been a win for me, right? I could have been an owner at that office and that would have been great, right? Our Ego loves that, right? I'm an owner. Ultimately if I knew I wanted it to be successful through my team. That's what I want and ultimately to be able to provide them the best platform for success, right? I knew that I had to make the decision to move to EXP because now I can offer them things that I never could before. That is through revenue share and that is through who stocks, right? Now, they can become owners. They have a vested interest after three years. They have two exceptional wealth building tools that they never had access to before.[19:46] JAMES: Absolutely, yeah. That same message as I go around talking with agents in my market, same message. My team is definitely not structured because your team structure right now is, consists of what? How is your team set up right now?[19:57] MIKE: We serve two markets. We serve Dayton-Ohio market and also the Cincinnati-Ohio market. [20:02] JAMES: Okay. [20:03] MIKE: We have 25 agents. We also have a listing manager and a contract manager and then an office manager as well. [20:10] JAMES: Right. [20:11] MIKE: I have Director of operations/ co-owner and a guy named Jump Welski.[20:16] JAMES: Yeah. You've got a pretty big a machine going up there and a lot of people being affected by your decision, all tweets and make that move over to the EXP, which is not something to be taken lightly by any means. I've spoken to a lot of other agents. I don't know. I've watched a lot of your interviews with people. It's a tough decision because it's not just you that you're affecting here. It's a ton of people that are affected by your decision, good or bad one way or the other. I don't think there's really any downside to EXP. I'm going to be a little biased, but the other revenue models or other revenue streams that we have available is great. The fact that we can collaborate with people all over the country at this point and soon it'd be international, 2019-2020 which is a pretty exciting where the company's. I compare what we're doing now with EXP and how Glenn has set this up and the fact that you are not going to have a conversation. You and I could talk to each day. Three quick questions I want to ask you. First question is what are you reading right now? I know you're always seeking knowledge. I know. Are you reading anything right now that…[21:20] MIKE: Let me make it up for you man. I'll tell you right now. I usually have a couple of different books going on. I do love to read and I do love to listen to podcasts. I'm listening to… this is not a business book but its called sleep smart. I don't do fitness coaching, but I have a fitness coach too. He sends me books. I'm also listening to the Perfect Day Formula and that's by Craig Valentine. I'm listening to it another book called The Swerve. That's a good book. It's funny man, because if you do a lot of reading or if you listen to podcasts, you always get ideas about books from other people, right? It seems like one book leads to another write. One book mentions another and then you pop that in audible and you read that. I think one really good nugget and you and your audience should write this down if you haven't heard it already is listen to that recent, the most recent Maxout podcast with Ed Mylett, where he talks to you. UOP baseball team. That is so good, man. It is so powerful. I've shared that with my entire team. I listened to it probably every other morning because it just so resonates with me, especially as you transitioned into 2019. If you need something to get you up and light a fire under your butt and it is great, great material, man. [22:26] JAMES: Yeah, I have my last. He's awesome. He is awesome. That's the beauty of a podcast is or an audio book for that matter just to be able to listen to it at any point of your day, at any time. It really doesn't matter where you're at nowadays. You can just pop that in and listen to us. I have not heard that one. I will make sure that I listened to it. I'm actually post the links so people can get just click where and go right into it. [22:46] MIKE: Awesome. [22:47] JAMES: I'm an avid, avid reader as well. There's always something that I pick up. The knowledge that it's that compound effect. One compounds on top of you, the next thing. Another last, last two questions here. What's your favorite quote? Favorite quote.[23:02] MIKE: Man, that's a good one. I think it's probably changed throughout time. I think my favorite quote is probably really cliché at this point, but it just so resonates with me is the old Zig Ziglar quote is that "you'll get what you want. If you can help enough other people get what they want." That has not always been true for me. I've grown in my business, I've learned that my success will ultimately be a product of the success that I help others have.[23:28] JAMES: Yeah, no, that's awesome. Zig Ziglar Fan, goodness gracious as well. I one that was one of my favorite of course. The other one is then you're going to be a meaningful specific or a wandering generality. It's huge and especially for realtors because most realtors are not meaningful specifics.[23:45] MIKE: Right. Right. We know that.[23:46] JAMES: Great, great quote there. The last thing I want to ask you, so what's something that you want to do in 2019 that you've never done before? Whether it be business related obviously EXP is an explosion in growth mode right now. What's something that maybe you've got want to do a 2019 that you've never done before?[24:04] MIKE: That question comes at a really opportune time for me because we're actually in the middle of opening up our own mortgage company, the P and L model. I'm actually really excited to play around with that a little bit. I think there's a huge opportunity, not only to add more money to the bottom line but to also provide a level of service that most of the real estate agents can't provide because this is going to be set ups just so especially at first just so this person is servicing our team.[24:29] JAMES: That's great. I've had a sin as a, as a loan officer. There's no better mortgage advisor like yourself because you are on that side and you speak to what your clients are really wanting and really be able to direct if it's going to be your mortgage company or whoever you're working or partnering with on the mortgage side to really provide a really, really good value for people because I know you've experienced it. I've experienced it with a mortgage companies that it amazes me that some of these mortgage companies exist or lenders should I say. I've had people just completely disappear during the process. This is amazing to me. It's amazing. That's a great opportunity and I think with your background there's no way that you would not be successful with that or anything else that you do. [25:19] MIKE: Thank you sir.[25:20] JAMES: That'd be great. Again, I am a huge fan. I admire everything you've been doing. You're one of those people when you meet him, you just like of like literally I met you. We shook hands on. My God, I just liked this guy. [25:29] MIKE: Likewise my man, likewise.[25:34] JAMES: I've got to get up to and actually one more thing we got to talk about real quick, the most important thing will Ohio State be in the playoffs or not.[25:42] MIKE: Man, at this point, does it even matter? It's whoever's going to play Bama and lose, right?[25:45] JAMES: Right. Right. That’s true. [25:50] MIKE: I love my Buck guys I'm also a realist man. [25:52] JAMES: Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, it's got to be quiet if you you say well. Anyway, when I appreciate your time, Mike. Thank you so much man. Thank you. Thank you. Keep doing what you're doing. I will continue to promote you as much as I can. If there's anything I can help you with, let me know and appreciate your time, man. You have a great one and we'll catch up. [26:07] MIKE: Likewise and if anybody's interested in that free coaching that you mentioned they could go to liverealestatecoaching.com and sign up there. I'd be happy to take on anybody for 30 to 40 minutes and just really dive deep into any area of your business you're looking to improve. [26:24] JAMES: I will post the link on the podcast. Actually let me put it on here so people can get that link and access what you're offering there. Yeah, can't go wrong. Free strategy call with Mike, reach out to them. He's an awesome agent, great example a lot of consistency and professionalism. I really appreciate what you do on Mike, We'll catch up soon brother. You take care.[26:43] MIKE: All right man. Thanks so much, James. I appreciate it. [26:46] JAMES: Okay. All right, bye-bye.[26:47] MIKE: Good luck.If you like this episode of the Houston Home Talk podcast, please don't forget to like, share, and comment! We appreciate your support and feedback! It’s all in the Attitude — ego is the Enemy. Our Ego will try to defend us either consciously or subconsciously when it feels the need. When it feels like we might fail. When it senses that we are feeling stress. Or when we’re staring down the barrel at a task we don’t really want to do. Or when we’re just tired.

MY EGO IS DYING is a rant about a simple train of thought on how we can all reach a point in our lives when we can no longer go back to the old ways of life. Our Ego has been infected by a conscious disease called 'awakening'. My such 'point of no return' arrived fairly recently and I wanted to talk through this and make sense of it. This Love Month Tom begins this conversation discussing Self-Love is better Self-Like to avoid narcissism and the only reason we don't like ourselves is because we have Ego Fears. That of course most of us have these fears because we collected them from a very early age. Our Ego holds on to our fears and the only way we can grow up is to have the courage to face them. We then discuss Romantic Love and how most people who believe they are in Love are really in Need. That Love is selfless and it is about Giving. Which means we can't have an agenda. We can't need anything, rather we come from a place of acceptance. As soon as we need we aren't in Love. We also discuss that only one person is required to Love another. As long as the relationship isn't abusive, and as long as we don't keep 'score' and have a list of what we need from the other person or feel that we are being taken advantage of, then we can Give Unconditionally and it is LOVE! The changes, may not happen over night, but if you are patient and willing to open yourself up to Love and come from a place of Giving we can find the courage to grow and actually have fun. Today at noon EST, Laurie Huston from News the Heart is talking with physicist Tom Campbell on Holiday Magic and Worthiness. This conversation begins with us discussing that most of us have difficulties with worthiness and that it is a fear we collect from a very early age. Our Ego holds on to our fears and how we get really stuck if we get depressed around the Holidays. He helps us again to understand that our intentions help us to move forward and sometimes we just have to 'do' it, as in go to the Holiday events and be Open, instead of going into our fears and avoiding all interactions. The Holidays are all about family and connecting with others. Relationships all assist us to grow and in cases where there is a great deal of anxiety or depression (which Tom claims is just fear and a choice) then you need to see your fears and move through them. It is through our intention to Grow towards Love or just Grow Up that the larger consciousness system that will help us and we can come from a place of BEing instead of an intellectual understanding. The changes, may not happen over night, but if you are patient and willing to open yourself up to the Holidays and come from a place of Giving (not gifts but just BEing) we can find the courage to grow and actually have fun. A big part of our interview is on Giving and connecting with the Magic of the season. Worthiness is difficult but it is just a fear we can overcome with courage and acknowledgment that it exists. Niche Radio — Our “Ego” is an identity of our own construction, an identity which is ‘not real’. If we take all the perceptions of what we are i.e. our beliefs about our personality, talents, and abilities – then we have the structure of our ego. It is reactive based on our past experiences or frame of references and plays and immense role in creating the emotional drama in our lives. The ego hides behind the “I” and “me” in the thoughts and statements we have about our identity (e.g. I’m not clever enough, pretty enough, capable etc). Every time we compare ourselves to external references (i.e people, situations or things) we are reinforcing or ego and the beliefs we have about ourselves. And where did these thoughts originate from? Well, our childhood. When we were kids, perhaps when we were teased on the playground or reprimanded or praised by a teacher or parent and this is where we started forming this perception of our ‘self’. As adults, we need to stop and take a reality check against our “Ego” which has served us a purpose up until now and that is to protect us and keep us safe by limiting ourselves. Episode 6 – Standing Out from Your Competition in Your Local Small Business   Welcome back to the Local Small Business Coach Podcast, I am your coach Tammy Adams. This is episode 6 and today we are going to discuss how to stand out from your competitors.   But before we dive in, I want to take a moment to discuss something that I saw on the Profit last night that really stood out based off our last couple of episodes.   If you aren’t watching the Profit, you need to. This is probably one of the best TV shows every local small business owner needs to watch.  Marcus Lemonis, the amazing businessman behind the show, invests in local business to help not only turn them around, but to develop a brand that he can take national.   His main mantra is something I’ve always been preaching, just using different words and that is People, Process and Product. He gives mini business lessons to the audience and as a small business owner, you can learn so much.   The main reason I bring this up is, in last night’s episode Marcus asked the small business owner, who had 5 soup shops by the way, what his gross margin was. This owner looked right at him and had no idea.   This really stood out to me since we just got through talking about this last week how you need to know your gross margin. Here is Marcus and one of his key questions was this very thing and then he goes on to share how if this man gets his gross margins up he would add over a million in sales and $300,000 in profit from this one thing.   It really drove home how important this is.  So if you aren’t watching, please go back and watch all the episodes. Maybe we will dive in more in a future episode.   But let’s dive into today’s topic – Standing out from your competitors.   I picked this topic to follow our last episode’s discussion on our Ego getting in the way on purpose.   Our Ego really goes crazy when it comes to our competitors.  Often times we beat our chest that we are so much better than they are, that we miss what they are doing well.   I actually have a great learning lesson I had on this back in my Depot days.  Since I had been with them from the 64th store, we were a very fired up group. We were growing so fast and kicking butt and our ego was huge. We dominated our competition and the love affair American had with us was pretty amazing.   As we expanded into the Western states, which is what I was a part of, we just took over a state at a time.  We had no problem being obnoxious and cocky. Then a strange thing happened, we went into Washington up against a pretty popular big box retailer similar to us. No matter what we did, these guys kept getting strong and going head to head with us.   It kind of through us for a loop since we felt we were so much better than they were. But the customer was telling us something different. Long story short, when we finally stopped beating our own chests and started to listen to the customer and how they were voting with their dollar we learned a valuable lesson. It led to use making a huge change that impacted a large chunk of our business. Those of you that shopped us 15 years ago saw us transition from a huge contractor focus to one that was both a contractor business and a home décor business. This was huge for us and a great move. It all came from us just listening to what the customers were telling us we needed to do to grow our business and meet the needs they were looking for.   I tell you this story as it is just as important to each local small business owner as it was to this big box retailer.   For each of you, there are others in your community that are also doing either a similar business as you are or they are offering maybe 1 or 2 similar services.  Your goal is to find out what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. What are the opportunities that you can be taking advantage of?   How can you stand out from your competitors?   For the full show notes click the link below!   HELPFUL LINKS Podcast Website:    LocalSmallBusinessCoach.com Leave your Message on the website with the SpeakPipe Button or just email me atTammy@LocalSmallBusinessCoach.com Episode Show Notes:  Episode 6 - Local Small Business Coach Podcast Our Training Materials for Local Small Business Owners:  TrainingforLocalSmallBusinessOwners.com Starting a Local Small Business Website:  StartALocalSmallBusiness.com

"Our Ego is our biggest problem, and stands in he way of living a spirit-filled life."     Modern psychology blames a low-self esteem for most people's bad behavior. Yet there is no evidence for this assumption, people with inflated (prideful) ego actually have cause more hurt and pain to society than people with a real low, deflated self esteem.     Apostle Jan Oosthuizen addresses this issue in this sermon on "developing a healthy ego."
