Today we had the honor of hosting Pablo Vegas, President and CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Pablo was appointed as CEO by Governor Abbott in October 2022, after previously serving as Executive Vice President of NiSource and Group President of NiSource Utilities. His previous management roles included senior positions with both American Electric Power and IBM. Pablo also serves on the Global Advisory Board for the Harvard Business School and is a member of the Texas Advanced Nuclear Working Group. ERCOT manages the flow of electricity to over 27 million Texas customers and oversees one of the most unique power grids in the US. We were thrilled to hear Pablo's unique insights on the latest power developments in Texas and across the US. In our conversation, we explore ERCOT's collaboration with international and domestic grid operators to share best practices for managing intermittent resources and ensuring resource adequacy, ERCOT's unique operational advantages, and Texas's projected electricity demand growth by 2030, which equates to adding Germany's current electricity demand. We discuss the reliability risks associated with renewable energy integration, insights into the current state of battery storage capacity, and the need for Texas market design changes to better incentivize the building of more dispatchable power plants. Pablo shares details about the Texas Energy Fund's $5 billion allocation aimed at incentivizing up to 10 gigawatts of dispatchable power, economic hurdles for coal plants as well as combined-cycle gas plants under EPA regulations requiring carbon capture by the end of 2031, opportunities for nuclear energy development, and the lack of clear market pricing signals in ERCOT compared to capacity market spikes in PJM and MISO. We touch on how the new administration might approach power policy, how current federal regulations hinder power sector growth despite incentives for broader economic expansion, and more. We ended by asking Pablo for his predictions for what Texas's generation mix might look like in five years and for the future of ERCOT's connectivity with other grids. We covered a great deal of territory and can't thank Pablo enough for his insights into all these critical topics. Mike Bradley kicked off the show by highlighting that markets remain in “digestion” mode as they continue to react to Trump's Cabinet picks. Over the weekend, Trump nominated Scott Bessent for Secretary of Treasury and markets responded favorably (bond yields dropped) on Monday as many investors believe he'll be more balanced on the tariff front. However, Trump surprised markets a day later by vowing that he'll levy additional tariffs on China (10%) and new import tariffs (25%) on all Canadian & Mexican goods. On the crude oil market front, WTI traded sideways/slightly down over the past week (~$69/bbl) due to a potential ceasefire deal in the Middle East. He noted that the December 1st OPEC meeting will now be virtual. OPEC's leadership will likely look to extend current production curtailments for another three months to get them through the seasonally weak Q1 period. On the natural gas front, U.S. natural gas price in recent weeks has spiked from ~$3.00/MMBtu to ~$3.40/MMBtu due to a colder 6-10-day weather outlook. The real gas story is in Europe where natural gas price in recent weeks has spiked to ~$15/MMBtu due to an early spell of cold weather, lower LNG shipments and extremely low wind generation. On the broader equity market front, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were up just over 1.5% over the last week as they continue to digest Trump Cabinet picks and what policy priorities might be enacted on early in his Presidency. On the energy equity front, the Energy sector was one of the few S&P sectors down last week (~1.5%). He also noted a handful of Energy & Materials sector deals this past week and ended by discussing that the COP29 Conference in Baku c

Protecting civilians against digital threats: 4 worrying trends and recommendations to address them

In situations of armed conflict, access to digital technology can save lives. But the use of cyber, information, and other digital operations by belligerents during armed conflict also brings new threats and risks for civilians. Think about cyber operations disrupting civilian infrastructure and services, information operations inciting violence against civilian populations, and digital operations undermining humanitarian relief efforts. In ever-more interdependent digital and physical environments, civilians and civilian infrastructure are increasingly drawn upon to support military operations and, as a result, face real risks of being targeted. As digital technologies permeate our lives and societies, cyber and information operations are no longer abstract or “only online”. They can, directly or indirectly, have serious online and ‘offline' consequences and harm people. Between 2021 and 2023, the International Committee of the Red Cross' (ICRC) President convened a Global Advisory Board of high-level experts from the legal, military, policy, technological, and security fields to advise the organization on digital threats and to develop concrete recommendations to protect civilians against such threats. Today, this Board released its report entitled ‘Protecting Civilians against Digital Threats During Armed Conflict'. In this post, Cordula Droege (chief legal officer and head of the legal division of the ICRC), Laurent Gisel (Head of the Arms and Conduct of Hostilities Unit of the ICRC), Tilman Rodenhäuser (Legal Adviser at the ICRC) and Joelle Rizk (Digital Risks Adviser at the ICRC) present four worrying trends the Board identified, and examples of the Board's recommendations to address one of them, namely the growing civilian involvement in digital military operations. Jo Chidley is one of those forces of nature, unconstrained by the way things are usually done.  As the co-founders of Beauty Kitchen, she and her partner refused venture capital, keeping their business free to become a B-Corp and to put people and planet ahead of profit.  She's dedicated to producing the best outcome for the people who work for her as well as for the people who buy her products.  And in the process of finding the best ways forward, she came across the horror of single use packaging and the devastation it's causing both in terms of the extraction and the post-use pollution.  So Jo founded 'Re' to find ways to bring 'reuse' back into the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' triad. Now, she's invited to Davos to speak about the way this could transform the vast global packaging industry. So in this week's podcast, we talked about why this is essential to transforming our world, and how it could work.  Jo has ideas that seem (and are) innovative now, but ten years from now, will be the way things are done. With enthusiasm, integrity and a great deal of humour, she offers solutions to the meta-crisis that rely on each one of us changing behaviour - and she's devoting her life to making it possible - indeed inevitable - that we do. Bio: Jo Chidley is a circular economy expert, chemist, herbal botanist, and co-founder of Beauty Kitchen and Re.  Founded in 2014, Beauty Kitchen is the highest scoring B Corp in the UK beauty industry and it's changing the face of the beauty industry with its aim to create the most effective, natural, and sustainable beauty products in the world. Jo went on to found Re, a company devoted to reducing the mountains of waste from our global $1tr annual single use packaging industry.  As one of the pioneers of sustainable beauty, Jo and her company have accelerated the transition to Reuse through sustainable innovation by implementing Cradle to Cradle design into Beauty Kitchen's circular approach. Jo's been instrumental in developing the world's first closed-loop solution for beauty packaging and powered the service behind the ground-breaking Re programme which is resuable packaging for personal care brands & retailers. Beauty Kitchen is recognised on the UK's 50 Most Disruptive Companies list and has won numerous industry awards, including ‘Who's Who in Natural Beauty'.Jo has won multiple industry awards, including the Natwest Everywoman Award in the Brand of the Future Category and was recognised as one of the 10 most influential people in Natural Beauty in the UK. She's been featured in the likes of ELLE, Woman & Home magazine and BBC News and is a founding member of the Global Advisory Board for Sustainable & Natural Cosmetics. What is that one superpower that helps protect everyone's heart? It's empathy.  A "food desert" is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food, and the designation considers both the type and quality of food available, as well as the accessibility of the food through the size and proximity of the food stores. In 2010, the United States Department of Agriculture reported that 23.5 million people in the U.S. lived in food deserts, meaning that they live more than one mile from a supermarket in urban or suburban areas and more than 10 miles from a supermarket in rural areas. Food deserts tend to be inhabited by lower-income residents with reduced mobility, making them a less attractive market for large supermarket chains and available foods are often of the highly processed type, high in sugars and fats, which are known contributors to the proliferation of obesity and other chronic diseases. It's estimated that the contribution of food deserts to healthcare costs in the U.S. is over $70 billion annually. Top Box Foods is a non-profit, community-based, social business, with an innovative model of getting healthy and affordable grocery boxes to food-insecure neighborhoods, creating year round access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins, in communities in Chicago, and Lake County, IL, as well as in New Orleans, LA. My guest on today's show is a man I met in India and immediately became intrigued with when he sat down to dinner with me and a friend, and began to delve into unlocking flow states in athletes through breath work. It turns out he had over two decades of experience in coaching professional athletes towards not only cultivating a winning mindset, but also customizing their training loads to their biomechanics and physiology, then optimizing body, mind, relationship and personal environment to skyrocket the careers of the Indian professional teams and athletes he was working with. His name is , and he describes his new book  as an "out-of-the-box approach" to performance enhancement. It is one part memoir and one part guide to self-discovery - an intimate account of the lessons Shayamal learned while growing up during South Africa's apartheid era, from living the life of a monk and traveling the globe with professional athletes. Using his knowledge and experience from the worlds of science, spirituality, and psychology, in this book, he takes you through this introspective and self-healing journey. From understanding the importance of self-love to decoding the science of healthy relationships; from learning to be emotionally present in every conversation to engineering your environment for success,  helps you take a deeper look at your life. Offering a scientific analysis of the human psyche and packed with useful questionnaires, his book is your guide to self-transformation and personal mastery. Shayamal is a South African born Sports Scientist, Psychologist and High Performance Coach. He hold two masters degrees in Clinical and Organizational Psychology. He grew up in apartheid South Africa, where his dream of wanting to play sports for the country faced an insurmountable opponent in institutionalized segregation. Not quite ready to quit sport, he studied Sports & Exercise Science. After returning from the Cricket World Cup in 2003 (Technical Analyst of Indian Cricket Team), he realized that irrespective of one’s academic qualifications and experience, racism was going to be a barrier to growth for people of color. To escape the pain of discrimination, he lived a monastic life for just under four years at the Hare Krsna Temple in South Africa. During that time, he discovered the close parallels between modern psychology and ancient vedic philosophy. Shayamal has since studied the various spiritual philosophies and worked to bridge the gap between spirituality and psychology in an attempt to guide his clients - the worlds best athletes and CEOs. Shayamal is a 4x TEDx speaker, a recipient of the INK Fellowship, the Australia India Youth Fellowship, Men’s Health Trainer of the Year, and Wellness Guru of the Year 2019. He serves on the Global Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition, Adidas Running and the UK Risk Management Forum. He has authored four book on Sports Science and Motivation and lectured at academic institutes globally for more than a decade. As a motivational speaker, Shayamal has delivered more than 350 keynotes addresses. Shayamal has served as a consultant to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa , Kenyan Athletics Team, Indian Olympic Association, United Nations Youth Forums, and on the peer review board of numerous academic scientific journals.  He has been a High Performance Coach or Sports Scientist to the South Africa High Performance and Women’s Cricket Team, 2003 Indian World Cup Cricket Team, South Africa Davis Cup Team, Indian Davis Cup Team, Kings XI Punjab (IPL), Bengaluru FC (3 x Winners of Premier League in India), Jaipur Pink Panthers (Inaugural Kabaddi Champions), St Lucia Stars (Carribean Premier League). He has been the Sports Scientist with the Indian Contingent at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, London 2012 Olympics, Delhi Commonwealth Games, and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. He has worked on the ATP Tennis Tour for six years with individuals like Mahesh Bhupathi (12 x Grand Slam Champion), Sania Mirza (6 x GS), Max Mirnyi (10 x GS), Gael Monfils, Marin Cilic (US Open Winner), and more. In 2012, he founded the HEAL Institute - Mumbai’s first Sports Science and Rehab practice. He exited the business in 2018 after it was acquired by Centrum Capital. John works as an independent consultant / critical friend to individuals and groups working across all sectors but primarily with NGOs and public sector organisations. He has over 40 years of experience working in post 16 education. His particular passion is understanding and learning about collaboration from individuals learning together to organisations wanting to work in 'partnership'. He is attached to three UK universities and sits on the Global Advisory Board of the TELLAL Institute based in Dubai. In September 2020 he was due to be taking a train from Los Angeles to Orlando for a month to write about the conversations he has as the USA goes through the 2020 Presidential Campaign. He is co-editor of the Sage journal Teaching Public Administration and co-editor of an international book series for Palgrave on Community-University Connections. He is fascinated too by both what we learn when we collaborate as well as what we unlearn. In 2013 he was the Founding Director of Edge Hill's Institute for Public Policy and Professional Practice (I4P) - now the Institute for Social Responsibility. I4P was set up to provide a bridge from the university to the outside world and to support connections going the other way. Imagined as a cross boundary multi disciplinary initiative it acted as a hub for shared learning and knowledge exchange. How we imagine such developments philosophically, intellectually, ethically as well as practically has, always, intrigued him. We talk about: American literature and politics, Manctopia/Mancmageddon and East Manchester regeneration under New Labour Obama, Trump and Hillary and Bill Cultural shifts (Clinton nearly lost the democratic nomination because of an affair - Trump builds an election campaign on the back of them) American Presidents and the Rapture... Personal Experience, Data or Science - what do we follow? NHS Improvement or Transformation - lessons from Covid Schools and Education - what do they actually teach? The role of imagination in transforming public service Words you don't see in public policy position statements Marmot and widening inequalities The role of interdisciplinary explorations and imagination How might we relocate power through networks and alliances of influence The post pandemic context and why we might not reach it Stranded in the strategic high peaks You can find John on twitter @ProfJohnDiamond Support this podcast

Tackling the role and meaning of sex during the lockdown, Doortje and I speak about the meaning and role of sex in times of high anxiety and despair. Working with couples across the world over the past two decades, I've noticed that sex is one of the main ways people cope with and manage their stress of various nature. Especially in times like these, we are driven to consider basic needs of feeling safe, loved, and achieving agency over our bodies and lives. Some look at sex as a way to be reminded that they are alive, they can still find pleasure in life, and create comfort in the idea that there is one area that they can still control about their bodies and their intimate relationships. Some others refrain from it and need to feel safe first before allowing physical connections as such. Doortje draws from her experience of 3 decades as a leader in the field of sexual health and wellbeing by sharing lessons learned from community education, the #MeToo movement, history and experiences of shame. She offers the idea that kindness can serve as a lens through which healing can be achieved. She encourages us to be more compassionate, towards ourselves and others, around our need to express ourselves sexually during this time and have sexual connection as a primal need, a form of coping for many. She reminds us that sex is not just about orgasms but a range of physical touch that could bring one joy. Follow Dr. Sara on IG | Join our community for resources and material discussed in the black fish podcast episodes.About Doortje Braeken van SchaikDoortje Braeken van Schaik has more than 35 years of experience in adolescent sexual reproductive health and rights, 25 of which with the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the largest sexual and reproductive health and rights organisation in the world, with expertise grounded in youth, gender and rights issues. About this Episode In this episode, I talk with Dr. Bob Lee, whose amazing research shows the importance of being trustworthy as a leader.  Bob shares some of the most profound (and sometimes surprising) findings about how trust is a crucial factor in keeping workplaces happy and healthy. About Our Guest (from Bob’s website) My area of expertise is in how and why the world’s best employers use great workplace cultures to drive competitive advantage. I’ve held various senior leadership positions with Great Place to Work Institute including four years as chairman of its Global Advisory Board, and I continue to support global multinational clients in my role as a senior consultant with Great Place to Work USA. I hold an MBA from the University College Dublin Smurfit Business School, and I live in Dublin, Ireland with my wife and family. Trust Rules is my first book, and I’ve recently started working on ‘the difficult second album’. Considering that it took me six years to research and write Trust Rules, the second book should hit the shelves sometime in 2023! As a professional public speaker, I deliver customized presentations for business leaders and their teams on topics related to how and why to create great workplaces. I’ve developed a number of talks that focus on the practical ways that managers build trust, with the scope to focus in on particular rules when that’s helpful. If you’re interested in exploring how I can help your organization to improve its performance by cultivating a high-trust workplace culture, let’s chat. Please get in touch.

Green Beauty Conversations by Formula Botanica | Organic & Natural Skincare | Cosmetic Formulation | Indie Beauty Business

We met Jo Chidley, beauty entrepreneur and founder of Beauty Kitchen, effective, natural, and sustainable beauty, almost a year ago and have been stalking her ever since to give us some airtime.  We are so excited to have caught up with her in her busy schedule running a multi-million turnover business from her native Scotland. Jo has won multiple industry awards, including the Natwest Everywoman Award in the Brand of the Future Category and was recognised as one of the 10 most influential people in Natural Beauty in the UK. She’s been featured in the likes of ELLE, Woman & Home magazine and BBC News and is a founding member of the Global Advisory Board for Sustainable & Natural Cosmetics. Jo was voted Nr 2 in the 2018 Who’s Who of Natural Beauty. In this episode of Green Beauty Conversations, Jo takes us back to her early days in the beauty business, and talks us through her start-up strategies and how she grew from small beginnings to where Beauty Kitchen is today. We realised talking to Jo that while some connections and opportunities come through sheer luck, there are many others that are out there for the taking, if you know when and where to look for them.  These include free business advice and numerous sources of funding. Jo and her husband knew they wanted to start a sustainable beauty business and spotted a gap in the sustainable, natural beauty market between the "fun of Lush and the efficacy of Neal's Yard", as Jo describes their niche. However, even though hugely successful now, Beauty Kitchen started small and took its time to thrash out that market niche and point of difference.  Jo tells us that her big break came in a rushed, rather impromptu but nonetheless very cleverly pitched 10-minutes to a retail buyer over a coffee in Starbucks. The beauty entrepreneur has to know how to plan and yet be super calm and flexible at a moment's notice to make the most of golden opportunities. Listen to Jo's experience, infectious energy and sound advice and you'll gain invaluable inside tips from a seasoned beauty entrepreneur.   In this episode, you'll gain beauty entrepreneur tips including: Don't rush your market research and the ground work needed to map your business model. Early sales at markets and fairs might seem a time waste but realise that the feedback you get and the resilience you gain personally from these experiences can help you define a better business and products later on. You need to be curious and do your research and have your antenna tuned to funding and networking opportunities.  There are more funds out there for start-ups that you might think, from free business advice to grants. Use your gut feeling too. If you have a product ready for market, but your 6th sense and market research is telling you it's not quite the right time for it to be understood, hold back. Start slowly but surely educating your market first and then try again. If your product or business doesn't succeed in its early days, learn to "fail fast, fail cheaply and move on and learn from it".  A wise entrepreneur knows to cut their losses, be strengthened by the experience and save their energy to start again, differently. Key take-out from this episode on becoming a beauty entrepreneur are: One opportunity often leads to another. Once you've gained one pot of funding, won one small award or some seed funding, you start to get noticed and to notice other sources of business know-how and start-up funding available to you at low or even no cost. Retailers, bank managers, and other entities you might wish to approach as you build your business are generally time poor. Try scripting out standard one-, three- and five-minute pitches that say everything important for your audience to know. Edit these pitches for different audiences. Getting hands-on and showing how your products work and how they differentiate themselves can do more than words on Powerpoint slides sometimes. So, get creative with your approaches to third parties. Seek out networking events and communities with like-minded businesses; someone will no doubt have had your issues and be able to offer mutual help. Sustainable business is not a trend but a new way of doing business. See how you can implement sustainable business practices transparently and ethically into your processes and products, whether in terms of packaging or moves to zero waste. Do what you can when you can. Small transparent steps are better than rushing and then not being able to deliver on promise. In this episode, Jo mentions several funding entities and other resources: Entrepreneur Handbook - a complete list and guide to small business funding in the UK. Entrepreneurial Spark - accelerator, intrapreneur and mindset enabler organisation and network. Startup Grind - global community of entrepreneurs.
