A weekly Podcast in which the RDG crew explores the insanity of poorly-conceived and hastily licensed board games.

Land hooooo! We're back from the dead! As you know, we've been dealing with shipping issues and boardgame logistics the past couple of weeks. If you're curious check out our Kickstarter page for the slew of updates that we've churned out! But right now let's talk a little bit about pirating! No, we're not referring to Napster or Pirate Bay, or any other torrenting website. We're talking about setting sail on the seven seas and getting up to no good! Frankly, this is something we've never done, but thankfully there's a board game for that! Pegleg is a card game about crude solutions to amputations and also pirating... it's also really bad. Is it possible that this game has less going for it than Go Fish? You'll have to walk the plank with us to find out! Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
We've emerged from your weird aunt's attic and we have a brand new game for you guys this week... well I suppose it's not BRAND new. it's definitely got some wear and tear, and that's partly because Jeff didn't realize it wasn't a pack of Sunmaid until after he'd torn through the box. We're playing the California Raisins matching game, and for the first time, you're going to hear it played LIVE during the recording of the show... Sounds bizarre? Don't think it will work? You think Jeff will vomit up some of the cards he ate? There's only one way to find out! Listen in now! Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
Waka Waka! No, this is not a Fozzy Bear reference, and no it's also not a Shakira reference... it's the other reference that remains in the pop culture refuse pile... It's circular disc munching time folks. That's right, we here at RDG have Pac Man Fever, and there's only one prescription that we know of! It's time to grab the nearest boardgame themed after the thing we're talking about and hope that scratches the itch! Join us as we play Buffalo Games' Pac-Man: The Board Game. Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
With as many bad board games as we play here at Rough Draft Games, we're pretty accustomed to slogging our way through the depths of despair, so to have a little bit of hope thrown in the mix is a nice change of pace! Today we're playing Hope's Peak Academy: Danganronpa Board Game! How will we ever pack all of the lore of Danganronpa into a 50-minute board game review? It's a herculean task, but we're down for the challenge! Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
Grave robbing has never been so cool! Today on Roll and Move The RDG crew takes a look at that one board game that you always saw on the shelf of your local game store but thought, "That box looks WAY too big for me to even begin playing that... What is this? GLOOMHAVEN!?" Today we are indeed opening that big box. What will we find? A legitimately good tile exploration game? A bunch of empty space due to poor packaging? Only one way to find out! Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
We know what you're thinking... What is the difference between a doctor and a Super Doctor? Well to tell you the truth would be a violation of HIPPA. Oh, what the heck, we'll tell you anyway! Super Doctor is an educational board game made on Table Top Simulator. How educational is it? How many patients did we wind up killing in our playthrough of the game? All valid questions, and the only way to find out is by listening to today's episode! Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
Meld... A word that's almost entirely used in the context of discussing the popular card game Phase 10. Today's podcast is no different. The boys over at RDG pop the top on the classic game purchased by Mattel in 2010 for millions of dollars. Was it worth the sticker price? Tune in to this episode to chill with your boys as we find out! Find out more at https://roll-and-move.pinecast.co
Tic-Tac-Match! No, it's not a podcast about sorting breath mints. Today we're taking a look at an updated version of the 300 BC Classic, Tic-Tac-Toe! Get ready for a cat's game like no other.
Abandon Ship! What if you took the blockbuster SMASH hit, Titanic and then you removed all the characters, replaced them with mice, cheese and added a mechanic where you can intentionally kill your fellow vermin passengers!? That's what the classic game, Abandon Ship is trying to... What do you mean you don't want to play another Reiner Knizia game? Where are you going? Come back!!
High Roller Horse Racing A failed Kickstarter? Obscure theme? Mint Juleps? We're in
After a nice holiday break the boys are back and they have 60...scratch that 30 minutes to get out of this prison cell they have voluntarily locked themselves in. Today the RaM boys take a look at Unlock! a room escape card game that tries to capture the essence of you arguing with your significant other over how to turn a combination lock.
Shadow's Depths Hey kids! Have you ever wondered about the sexual fetishization of being digested?!? No? Well let me tell you all about it! We can only break these barriers down by normalizing a really cool and neat subsection of society!
Another Pandemic/Cthulhu Game? It's gone viral.
What's scarier than feelings of betrayal from a friend and team mate? How about a raging fire uncontained fire heading right toward your house? Zoinks! Tune in to today's episode of Roll and Move to find out!
Look, if you have to ask... just don't. If you literally don't get it... I just feel sorry for you at this point.
Mad Magazine was way ahead of its time trying to use a brand to sell board games in 1979. But one trick podcasts.... erm magazines... no BOARD GAMES can only get you so far. Unless your name is Alfred N.
Thomas forgot his mic so Garrett turns to hard liquor.
Today on Roll and Move the boys decide to tackle a legend. Dark Tower is a heavyweight in the adventure board gaming genre because of the novelty of it's mega computer that keeps track of the status of the game for you. But does the game stand up under the weight of its reputation? Or will it finally meet its match as Thomas is keen to haggle the computer's shop prices down to what he considers "a good deal?" Tune in to find out!
Enough time has passed. We're finally ready to talk about the 2016 election like adults. We just need to cast all of the candidates as cute animals. Bring back the ineligible candidate that won it all in '08 and '12. And of course punish any and everyone who even thinks about switching from the Central to Mountain time zone! Today the boys take a look at the self proclaimed game of "political satire at its finest"... and one could argue that not a single word from "game" to "finest" is honest... but maybe that makes the word "political" true by default. Wait. Is this game brilliant?
You know... normally we'd take pity on an orphan... give 'em the benefit of the doubt. Especially one who watched his parents brutally murdered in front of him... but we have to draw a line. We HAVE to have principles... and if you're gonna make us suffer through a roll and move game, orphan or not, you BETTER NOT also make Chutes and Ladders or Candy Land look strategic, especially as the self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Detective." C'mon dude... it's time to quit with the excuses...
We hoped this day would never come. All Rise. On Roll and Move?!? It can't be that bad can it? Well fortunately for us that's to be determined. And fortunately for you we are taking a(nother) break from the standard format to take an introspective look at the creation of All Rise from conception to Kickstarter. Join the gang as they reminisce about what got them to 19k and all the mistakes they made along the way.
Join the Roll and Move gang as they recap the last 25 episodes and answer the burning questions everyone has!
Is all you can eat pizza ever a positive force in the universe? Is Woodstock, GA a good place to grab a bite to eat? Join the RaM crew as they take a deep dive into the game inspired by walking through an all you can eat pizza buffet trying to recoup your investment and try to answer these very questions. All Rise is live on Kickstarter! Check it out!
Please don't listen to this episode with your kids or your parents. Please DO check out All Rise on KS until July 16th!
Think of a game twice as complicated Uno. I'll give you a second or two. We have funded! You can still pick up a copy of All Rise for $19!
Today on Roll and Move the boys explore the comic book legends the UNCANNY X-Men. Please do not come into this episode expecting anything canny, because I'm telling you now it is NOT. The resemblance of the board game to the heroes, the ability for Pressman Toys to spot a cash grab from a million miles away, or Beast's intelligence. Yep. All 100% canny. Also be sure to check out ALL RISE now on Kickstarter!
Buckle in! We're diving head first DEEP into the lore of nerd culture. Lines will be blurred. Friend zones will be entered. Phallic jokes will be made. All in the name of video games, anime, and animated pop punk bands! Today the RDG boys take a look at Cosplay Girlfriend the art joke piece that gets in bed with otakus and weebs and then takes dead aim at them. Do the jokes land? How long do you commit to the bit before it gets old? Wanna hear the story behind the RDG boys meeting Lavar Burton? Will the gang EVER release All Rise on Kickstarter? Tune in to find out!
Garrett, Tom, and Jeff start dating! What could go wrong?
Today on Roll and Move we're coming in like a Shreking ball and we're knocking down the global barriers by taking a look at a game coming straight out of Argentina. No, don't get excited. It's not a groundbreaking cultural artifact... in fact, it's a Blockbuster (that's right THAT Blockbuster) exclusive board game marketing the Shrek 2 movie. But If there's anything that the RDG boys learn in this episode, it's that just like love and laughter, shitty board games can be found around the world... Get Shrekt.
Ahh... it's the turn of the millennium. The reign of car phones is coming to a most convenient end, The Settlers of Catan haven't quite yet caught fire here in the US, and nerds everywhere are just getting their first taste of the over-proofed cake that George Lucas finally pulled out of the oven after 16 years. But most importantly: Pikachu is king. Yes Pokémon rule the minds of adolescence and the wallets of parents across the globe. And what better way to capitalize on Pokémania than by making a roll and move board game that destroys friendships with furious take that mechanics?!?
We admit it. Every once in a blue moon we get things wrong. Fortunately for us, we're perpetual pessimists so when we are wrong it results in "well it wasn't THAT bad." Today we pull up our spandex and jump in from the top rope into a game that combines rock paper scissors, WAR, and John Cena. This has got to be the quintessential RAM fodder... right? Well as you know this is scripted, and spoiler alert the game won us over... but you can't miss out on the high flying drama and action of that unfolding can you?
So... you want to play the game? Prepare to get punished by the Gatekeeper from Nightmare, one of many games in the Atmosfear series that utilized cutting edge technology (VHS) to deliver the most thematic and terrifying setting a board game possibly can while leaning on roll and move mechanisms.
Sometimes you just can't quite squeeze out enough enjoyment out of a buggy 6 level game starring anthropomorphic animals that practice martial arts. And when that happens, what else can you do but port it over to board game format? The Cheetahmen was an early 90s NES dud packaged with 51 other games in the infamous Action 52 cartridge that has since gained a cult following.Fortunately for the RAM crew, one of those fans decided to make an actual roll and moved themed board game for crazy people like us who seek out obscure and weird and bad and painful entertainment. Listen in and find out how you too can cut up a calendar to make a totally rad video game adaptation!
Remember when you showed up to that Yoga party wearing a bedsheet fastened around your shoulder and waist with your grandma's old Christmas wreath on your head? Or the time you jumped headfirst into a conversation with a girl with a 5 minute explanation of why Mai Valentine isn't necessarily your dream girl, but you could definitely do worse... all because she said "my valentine is soooo sweet!" to her friend while you were sitting next to them. Well have no fear! Luigi knows exactly how you feel! And now you can show your friends and family just what it feels like too with Luigi's Mediocre Party! An awkward roll and move game where you're just trying to get out of the party without anyone noticing you were even there to begin with... and also in the Mario universe?Letsa GO!
Today on Roll and Move the boys pack their wagon and head off on the notorious Oregon Trail seeking adventure, manifest destiny, and to fulfill their masochistic desires. Don't worry Garrett dies off immediately.
If you've ever played a game of Chutes and Ladders, it is extremely hard to dismiss the eerily similar feelings blinding speed and precise platforming you experienced the last time you played a Sonic game. So it's no wonder that the 1992 hit boardgame Sonic the Hedgehog Game is nearly impossible to get your grubby little hands on for 20 years. Enter Tabletop simulator. Suddenly supply and demand becomes a thing of the past. Reprints? These virtual clunkfests will never go out of print. And most importantly, those pesky tables are now light as a feather so you can flip the entire game off the second you see your chances of victory begin to slip into an bottomless abyss, not unlike the chasm you hover over in your virtual world (don't roll those dice too hard!).Today the RDG boys follow their government mandated shelter in place orders and play a virtual version of the quintessential RAM game. Ready for the rules? Roll a die and move that many spaces! Thank God the rabid online fans took some time to implement some sweet aesthetic changes to make this a can't miss episode!
Left or right? Do you want to investigate the suspicious clue or wander off in another direction? Do you decide to listen to this incredibly entertaining episode of Roll and Move or continue self-isolating without the best analysis of the worst board games?Today the RDG boys take a look at Choose Your Own Adventure the board game... which is eerily similar to Choose Your Own Adventure... the books... so just choose which way you want to be given the illusion of choice!
Isolation. Despair. Loneliness. Solo games. All synonymous with Coron.... err... umm... Football? Listen to Garrett subject Tom and Jeff to utter torment as he forces them to play Gridiron Football, "the realistic football card game" that has you guess which play is right for every down and distance while the defense sits and watches from the sideline. If you love PAC-12 football, you're gonna love this! But wait there's more!!! The boys also go off on a really long tangent about the virtues of dice vs. cards! Just pay S&H!All of that and more! Today on Roll and Move!
CORONAVIRUS! A NATION UNDER LOCKDOWN! MARTIAL LAW NEXT!?In other words, sounds like a good time to stay inside and play board games. But since we're on the subject of government-mandated actions, let's talk a little bit about government-mandated thought! Today on Roll and Move, the RDG boys play the 1960's Cold War-era classic "Propaganda" by WFF 'N PROOF Games. An educational game designed to teach the tenants of communication and the flaws in certain strains of logic, Propaganda is all about calling out logical fallacies when you see/hear them. Sounds interesting? Good. So strap in and have a listen... Only an idiot wouldn't (ad hominem).
Just when you thought the case was all wrapped up, BOOM, another person dies of kidney failure. Is it really not over? Will Mayor O'Neil win re-election, saving capitalism (and your pension)? Why haven't Bronkus and Sleepy followed up on literally the only two leads they were given at the beginning of the case? Will every NPC continue to have the same accent?!?All of these questions and more will be answered on the grand finale of THREE DAYS UNTIL RETIREMENT!And be sure to stay tuned to the end of this supersized episode to here the RDG boys FINALLY rate the game!
In today's episode of Roll and Move, we continue on with the RPG adventures of Bronkus McHardface (Thomas) and Sleepy Napsicle (Jeff) in order to crack down on Metro City's current kidney-stealing crime spree. Terror has gripped the city and this terrible new epidemic as taken the life of the daughter of one the candidates running for mayor. There's a total outcry! Who can save the city from this madness!?Today, Thomas and Jeff assume the identity of washed-up cops, Bronkus McHardface and Sleepy Napsicle in the role-playing game, Three Days to Retirement. In this episode, Jeff Lee returns to create his character for our upcoming buddy cop/drama/comedy/documentary series Three Days to Retirement. Who is Steven "Sleepy" Napcicle? Why does have ties to the criminal underworld. Why does he carry a dismembered rabbit's foot around with him when walking a beat? Find out the pressing answers to these questions on Today's episode of Roll and Move!
A mountain of cigarette butts teeters over your small second-hand ashtray tucked away at the corner of your desk. Your fingers are still sticky from the eclairs that Mike brought in this morning, but that doesn't stop you from picking up the ominous envelope sitting on top of the morning's paperwork. You open it groggily. Who could blame you? You spent all last night on patrol in your police cruiser, and now the bastards are making you work the morning shift in the office... But what you see inside the envelope perks you up real quick. It's a message from the chief, and when the chief wants to talk one on one, it's NEVER a good thing...Feel invested? Good! Today on Roll and Move Thomas and Garrett spend a little alone time creating a character for the Role Playing Game, Three Days Until Retirement by DIOXIN DUMP. If you're a fan of cop dramas and police tropes, boy are you in luck!So sit back, relax, and enjoy the prelude to what's sure to be a ridiculous play-through of a ridiculous RPG!
It's an episode of pure PUNishment today. If you don't like terrible puns, then you might PUN out of steam before the end of this episode. But we still consider it our resPUNsibility to push forward with this crap anyways...Pun Intended is a party game created by The Game Chef that's intended for 4-12 players with an ungodly 60 minute playing time (Thankfully, we don't think it would take anyone nearly that long to rattle off a couple of puns to their friend).Join the Rough Draft Games crew as we plow through a hastily made party game and talk esoterically about the nature of comedy and laughter all the while vomiting up wordplay. Right about now would be a good time to close with another pun, but quite frankly we're sick of them and you probably are too...
The RDG boys jump the shark in Season 3 of Roll and Move! Marriage! Divorce! Steamy Bead and Breakfasts! Death! World class story telling! Daniel reappears! Just some of the things we are saying about this episode we did. Our first ever foray into possibly role-playing but only maybe. WTF does that mean? Listen in and find out!
Well, here we are... We're at the end of season 2 of our little podcast and what have we learned? What life-altering lessons will we walk away with? What fond memories will we sit around the fire and regal our grandchildren with!?Cool your jets, big guy. Today we plan to add to answer such pressing questions! On today's episode of Roll and Move the boys sit down and look back at the last 25 episodes of the show. We'll discuss where things went right, where things went wrong, and everything in between.
The boys are back in the new year! And what better way to start things off than with a totally clean slate by getting fired from your job? If the you the income, then don't worry because there's a boardgame for that.Today the boys play Five Fingered Severance, where the name of the game is to steal and slack off as much as possible until you are eventually fired. With a theme like that, it's sure to be a light romp of fun quick gameplay! But with a show like ours, you know that last sentence is sure to be bullshit.
You how there's a doubleheader in baseball? That's got to be pretty exhausting and to play through. Imagine a triple header! Or even a quadruple header! Wouldn't that be something? I bet you'd really hate your life after playing through something like that. Yeah, I bet you wouldn't be happy at all.On a completely unrelated note, Today we're playing 3 to 4 headed monster! A social deduction microgame by Tasty Minstral Games. You would think it wouldn't be so bad because it's not as long as the baseball stuff I was talking about earlier... Well. Why don't you have a listen and find out for yourself on today's episode of Roll and Move.
