Candice Lim, former host of Slate's ICYMI, former producer of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, and total pop colture savant, joins Nicole Barlow and Ryan Pak to talk about the soundtrack to the 2004 Adamson, Asbury, and Vernon directed film, Shrek 2. As with many blockbuster sequels, the Shrek 2 soundtrack is filled with expensive needle drops, covers of famous songs, and a new song that was nominated for the 2004 Best Original Song Oscar. That would be the Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love", which would end up falling to Jorge Drexler's "Al Otro Lado del Rio" from The Motorcycle Diaries. For covers, you have Butterfly Boucher covering David Bowie's "Changes", Frou Frou covering Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero" and Pete Droge covering "Ever Fallen in Love" by the Buzzcocks. Tom Waits and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds also appear in the soundtrack with previously released songs, as do The Eels, who are the connective thread between the various Shrek soundtracks. Candice attributes the Shrek 2 soundtrack to filling in pop culture blind spots of her youth and joins the hosts in making predictions about the upcoming Shrek 5 sequel. Well folks, we had 2 (TWO) guests get sick and bail on us this week so we had to forestall (not googling if thats the correct use of the word) hot progust bites and do a different thing! And unfortunately that different thing says 'Donkeh' with a Scottish accent pretty frequently. Also up for discussion: One of the hosts is in trouble at work (who could've predicted thusly), Chris rides the world's tallest wooden rollercoaster (all adjectives false) and we take you all to a land far, far away (from good taste). Shrek and Fiona, fresh off their 'happily ever after', are invited to a Royal Ball in celebration of their marriage. It's being held, far far away in the kingdom of Far Far Away, by Fiona's parents, the King and Queen of Far Far Away, aka Mum and Dad. But hold on to your boots (Puss), because Shrek, being an actual ogre, faces a bit of a challenge fitting in with the royal family—especially when they expected the dashing Prince Charming, instead of a swamp-dwelling ogre. Shrek 2 builds on its predecessor, exploring themes of self-acceptance and the chaos of familial relationships, giving us more depth, elaborating on the story we've seen, and carrying it on naturally. He's married the princess, now he has to meet the parents. Shrek 2 is seen by many as a perfect sequel. Not a perfect movie, but a perfect sequel. This is also a movie with heart, with a great central villain who's clearly been in it for the long run, and all Fairy Godmother wants is her boy on the throne. Shrek getting a sequel was obvious, but wait, isn't this series making fun of Disney constantly churning out mediocre sequels? It's a good job this one is actually decent, right? But really, aren't we all just here for Puss in Boots? Just look at him, in his little boots! Awwwww! And where have all the good men gone? Shrek 2 takes everything that was successful about the first film in the franchise and attempted to expand out the characters, world and magical lore. With new characters like Puss In Boots, The Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming plus the Kingdom of Far Far Away it established Shrek as the biggest 3D animated franchise. Here in our Caravan Of Garbage review we get right into whether it still holds up nearly 20 years later.
