Joe and Elliott get completely out of their depth talking about things they have absolutely no business talking about. They should really keep their traps shut, I'm talkin' gorilla glued shit, but nah, they just keep yapping. But that's podcasts, right? We don't do FANCY SETS or COME PREPARED. Nah, we just read books that are randomly left open next to us while pondering the fickle nature of an AI that's only right 80% of the time (we're right 100% of the time, which is a different number) Music/SFX: If you like our sounds, sign up for ONE FREE MONTH on us at Epidemic Sound! Good evening, worms, and welcome to the annual Halloween celebration! Tonight, the pitiful gang dares to summon Wolfman Steve and me, The Gatekeeper! They shall present the games they've played, including Mansions of Madness, Storyfold Wildwoods, The Stifling Dark, Nyctophobia and deliver a feature review of that wretched classic, Betrayal at House on the Hill! Then, the mortal known as Tony T will drag forth the Tabletop Gaming News, followed by a rousing discussion about role-playing and storytelling in board games. Welcome to the debut episode of our latest series, the Comic Book Keepers Book Club! At least once a month we will be bringing you an in-depth discussion breaking down comic runs, one-shots or graphic novels ranging from the iconic and beloved to the weird and wacky. Lance and Jeremy (The Geekly Grind) will be spearheading this new endeavor, while Chris will continue to bring the character deep dives. But fear not, Chris and Lance will still be recording together routinely. This premier episode of the CBK Book Club is all about the BRILLIANT time and reality warped anthology series, Assorted Crisis Events, by Deniz Camp, Eric Zawadzki, Jordie Bellaire, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Tom Muller and Wesley Griffith from Image Comics! Apologies for the error in this episode, we believed Assorted Crisis Events was a limited series, but to our utter joy, it is ongoing! We ADORED this series, I strongly recommend picking up the first trade paperback, available in stores NOW. We will always share the next CBK Book Club comic in the previous episode, so be sure to listen so that you can read and join in on the discussion. In the first episode of season 4, Dan Brown joins us to share about his love of hobby board games. He talks about transitioning from games like Monopoly to discovering the more advanced Carcassonne, which became his gateway into modern board gaming. Dan explores the relationship between game themes and mechanisms, saying he's drawn to games where these elements work together cohesively. He discusses his collection's evolution from simple games he could play with his family to more complex strategy titles, and touches on his fascination with observing how people interact with game systems. Dan emphasizes the tactile, screen-free nature of board gaming as an important escape from digital experiences, and offers advice for newcomers to the hobby on how to look for the right game for them.Guest BioAfter running boutique design firm EightShapes for 18 years, Dan Brown (he/him) struck out on his own, starting Curious Squid Design Lab to continue providing high quality information architecture and UX consulting to enterprise organizations. It's time for another Mind Gap Podcast! This week, Doug and Justin figure out how long they'd survive in a horror movie. Of course, it's not just a simple answer as they have to first figure out what type of horror movie they're in. Bottom line, neither are going to live long. Once they solve that mystery, the dorks dive into their main topic, which board games ruin friendships the fastest? They go through the obvious culprits such as Monopoly and Risk but also discuss some outliers like Uno or Catan. Things are wrapped up with a new game called Patch Notes: Real Life Edition, where Doug reads out patch notes for real life and Justin has to decide if they're good or if they should be scrapped as garbage. We want to make a board game. It must, of course, teach the world about economics. It must be fun. It'd be nice if it sold lots of copies! How hard could that be!? (Monopoly and Catan are hugely popular and basically little economy simulators, after all.)Well, turns out, it's quite hard! We're in a golden age of tabletop games. Thirty years ago there were around 800 new games each year. Now it is more like 5,000. Just a handful of those get to be hits. Please join us on the Boardgames To Go discord server where you can chat online with other podcast listeners. Opener: The games we played at the second BGTG Online Mini-Con Closer: Essen is almost here, and I'll still follow it (but not anticipate it) For a long time I've wanted to have a boardgamer's discussion about different sports...as games. I don't mean sports boardgames, or season/league play. Nor do I mean franchise management. I mean the physical game itself, on the field, with its rules. Sure, a sport is a physical activity. An enormous part of the resulting play comes from the athletic prowess and physical skill of the players. However, there's a lot of strategy in the best sports games. It's part of what makes them fun to watch, to discuss, to second-guess, and so on. Whether it's football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, or tennis, these games have rules, they have scoring systems, they have strategic texture. Right? If you don't see that, then it might explain why you don't care for sports. Maybe all sports have strategic texture. It's much harder for me to see in something like the dash races on the track or in a pool. Those seem to be much more measures of sheer physical athleticism. Though even in races, I've heard runners talk about the strategy for a race, especially with the energy management and psychological contest against other runners. However, I'm really focusing on sports that have more rules, more scoring. I think these provide greater opportunity for players and teams to differentiate from each other by their strategy. Sometimes it comes from the coach or manager, such as when managing the clock. Part of the reason this is a solo episode is that I've always had difficulty getting others to understand what I'm talking about. Or perhaps no one is interested! Whatever--I decided to record this episode by myself and find out what kind of response it generates. If you are a sports fan--and a boardgamer--does any of this make sense to you? Did I forget something? Especially with the sports I don't follow so much (soccer, basketball, hockey), I'm sure that I did. Boardgamers seem to gravitate toward baseball, a game that offers the opportunity for deep study and second-guessing. I'm anticipating some reaction there. -Mark
Yes, we're back again, this time to talk about board games that were converted from computer games. Some of them are excellent...some are just cash grabs. Listen on to find out which is which! Also, if you want to make this episode a drinking game, take a drink every time we say "...but the minis are gorgeous!" (Not responsible for liver damage.) We discuss: What kind of board game could be based on the world's first "cathode ray tube amusement device"? (Hint: none.) 60% of us remember Zaxxon - do you? There are so many games named Civilization that Mike doesn't remember which one he likes. He is, however, ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that someone on the podcast didn't like Civilization: A New Dawn, but we don't know who. (Tune in next month to find out!) What have we missed? What's your favorite board game version of a video game? How are we wrong? Come visit our Discord server to chat with us and other like-minded game nerds! As always, thank you for listening. What kinda hare brained scheme are we up to? Yes friends, this episode is deep diving into a cartoony anthropomorphic character that might be a little off beat to some of you... Captain Carrot. Did you know that he's a DC character? Did you know that Grant Morrison wrote the comic for a bit? Did you know he has a whole team called the zoo crew? Well, buckle up, carrot cake, it's about to get bunny. Not sure what that means... but we're going with it. You have a super-power, too! You can write a REVIEW! When designer Matt Leacock decided to make a board game about climate action, he knew he wanted to make it – first and foremost – fun to play. “If we sold anything as an educational game… people would run screaming and running for the hills,” he told us. But can simulating the climate crisis really make for a good Friday night with your friends? What are the limits to gamifying social issues as complex as global warming? In this episode, we speak with Matt about what it took to design an entertaining game about one of the most challenging topics of our time, and enlist a few friends to playtest his game: “Daybreak.” Featuring Matt Leacock, with appearances from NHPR's Marina Henke, Nick Capodice and Hannah McCarthy. This episode was produced by Taylor Quimby.
