Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. April Fools! You may think the joke here is that we've made an episode on the California Raisins backstory, but in fact…the joke is that you think this episode is a joke. This touching expose of the raisin industry is actually a disguised Discograffiti episode about the career trajectory of the great Buddy Miles (Electric Flag, Buddy Miles Express, Band Of Gypsys). Host Dave Gebroe teams with OG Discograffiti host Joe Kennedy, and together they create a whoopee-cushioned joy buzzer of an April Fools' gag that succeeds on every level imaginable. Here are just a few of the many things that Joe discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The issues within the raisin industry which provoked the creation of the California Raisins; The father of Claymation, who lent his talents to bringing these shriveled, anthropomorphized snacks to life; A full career overview of Buddy Miles; The crazed extent of the merchandising involved with this phenomenon; The mysterious, off-label fourth California Raisins record; And a not-very-in-depth, extremely shallow dive on The California Raisins discography! It's time to dance again! and this week our dance card starts with The Capitols' 1966 hit "Cool Jerk." Erik has a hard time getting over the song's origins and we both blow a gasket over D. Storball's high octane vocal performance. The Creation mod-ified the song the next year and then it's fast forward to the 80s to hear The Go-Go's sprightly rendition. We found a pretty wild, high school drama club version by the excellently named Seekers of Justice (shout out to Miss Brown!) ... then more 80s cheeze with The California Raisins (add some celery and you've got ants on a log!) ... the latest version comes from this year by some DJ who we aren't convinced is a real person. Smokin'!!
The January 26 edition of the AgNet News Hour focused on a crop that helped build the Central Valley—but is now fighting for survival: California raisins. Hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill welcomed legendary raisin industry leader Kalem Barserian, former CEO of the Raisin Bargaining Association, for a blunt, behind-the-scenes look at why raisin consumption is falling, why growers are struggling, and what it will take to keep the industry alive. Barserian, who's spent 65 years in the raisin business, explained that California used to dominate the world raisin market. But today, the state has dropped to fourth globally, and he warned it could slide even further. The biggest issue isn't just foreign competition—it's demand. “People aren't eating dry grapes,” Barserian said, pointing to changing consumer habits since COVID, more snack options on grocery shelves, and a major lack of domestic advertising. The numbers paint a stark picture. In 2016, California shipped about 320,000 tons of raisins. Last season, that total fell to around 170,000 tons—nearly cut in half in less than a decade. Production this year is expected to land near 180,000 tons, which means if sales don't increase, surplus inventory will keep growing and prices to growers will stay weak. Barserian also emphasized how rapidly raisin grape acreage has collapsed. He said California once had about 280,000 acres of Thompson Seedless raisin grapes in 2000—but now that number is down to roughly 70,000 acres, with another 20,000 acres in newer overhead drying systems. He predicted that within ten years, traditional Thompson vineyards could be nearly gone, replaced by newer varieties and drying methods that are fully mechanized and more reliable in unpredictable weather. A major focus of the episode was a critical meeting in Washington, D.C., where raisin industry leaders were meeting with USDA to request additional government support. Barserian said USDA has already committed to purchasing $20 million worth of raisins, and the industry is pushing for another $70 million to support school lunch and food assistance programs. If approved, that could remove roughly 15,000 tons from the supply chain and help stabilize the market. Nick and Josh also debated the marketing problem—especially how to get kids eating raisins again. With milk and other products using colorful packaging and fun messaging to reach young consumers, Papagni argued raisins need that same energy, even suggesting the return of the classic “Dancing Raisins” campaign. Barserian agreed that the old campaign worked, but stressed that private-label dominance makes generic advertising difficult unless the industry unites behind a bigger effort. The takeaway from this episode was clear: raisins aren't just a snack—they're part of California's farming identity. But if growers are going to survive, the industry needs stronger demand, stronger support, and a path forward that rewards farming families instead of pushing them out.
Luke and Andrew learn that they may be sitting on some valuable old pennies…they just need to check their spare change jars. They also discuss self-driving rectangles and the California Raisins.
California agriculture continues to evolve as growers adapt to water shortages, rising labor costs, and global competition. On the latest AgNet News Hour, Fresno County Viticulture Advisor George Zhuang shared insights on the grape and raisin industry, highlighting innovation, collaboration, and the future of raisin production. Raisin Industry Innovation and Sustainability Zhuang emphasized the importance of staying competitive in the global market. With California no longer the undisputed leader in raisin production, new varieties like Sunpreme, combined with mechanized pruning and trellis systems, are paving the way for more efficient, sustainable production. These innovations could allow for near-complete mechanization, reducing labor reliance while maintaining quality. Zhuang also stressed the need to preserve traditional varieties like Thompson raisins while embracing technological advances to ensure the industry's future. Upcoming Events: Grape Symposium & World Ag Expo Growers and industry professionals are invited to the San Joaquin Valley Grape Symposium on January 7th at UC Kearney in Parlier, California. The full-day event features morning classroom presentations on raisin varieties, rootstocks, pest management, and afternoon field demonstrations of mechanical pruning techniques. Zhuang encouraged all interested in grapes, from PCA advisors to growers, to attend and network with experts and industry veterans. The podcast also highlighted the World Ag Expo in Tulare (February 10–12), featuring cutting-edge automation, educational seminars, and 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space. These events provide opportunities for growers to stay informed on the latest technologies, best practices, and market trends. Advocacy, Policy, and Consumer Awareness The show addressed broader agricultural challenges, including water shortages in the Westland's Water District, labor pressures from rising minimum wages, and global competition in raisin production. Listeners were reminded of the importance of advocating for California-grown products and supporting U.S. agriculture. Mental health resources for farmers, promoted by the American Farm Bureau Federation, were also discussed, highlighting the human side of farming. Conclusion With innovation, education, and community support, California's grape and raisin industries are positioning themselves for a sustainable future. Tune into the AgNet News Hour to hear the full discussion with George Zhuang and stay connected to critical updates, events, and resources shaping the state's agriculture.
Jim Cummings, the legendary voice actor behind Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and countless beloved Disney characters, shares his remarkable journey from classroom troublemaker to animation icon. Starting his professional career in 1984 at age 30 after years as a drummer and singer in bands, Cummings reveals the emotional moment when original Tigger voice Paul Winchell told him "take care of my little buddy for me, kid" before passing away. He explains his unique character creation process, combining imperfect impressions—his Star Wars character Hondo Ohnaka came from mixing "bad Yul Brynner and bad Charles Bronson." From voicing the California Raisins to appearing throughout Disney theme parks worldwide in attractions like the Millennium Falcon ride at Galaxy's Edge, Cummings reflects on the profound impact of being told by fans "you raised me, you're the voice of my childhood."The versatile performer discusses the consistency required to maintain iconic characters, the importance of honoring predecessors like Sterling Holloway's original Pooh, and his work with legendary songwriters the Sherman Brothers. Cummings shares behind-the-scenes stories of recording Tasmanian Devil, being in "every show on the Disney afternoon" block, and his pride in tucking the world into bed every night since 1999 as the voice of Epcot's Illuminations show. He hints at future projects he can't discuss and promotes the upcoming Mickey Mouse Mixed-Up Adventures series. With his daughters writing about what it's like having a famous dad and his presence across Disney parks from Paris to Tokyo, Cummings embodies gratitude for a career that transformed childhood impressions into a legacy spanning generations.

He subsequently went solo and had several singles on Billboard Dance charts. As the Winter Warnerland liner notes state:“He's the guy who first brought you Karen White with their smash hit, The Facts of Love. Kenny G, his former sax player and right now is one of the hottest session cats out there. You can hear his magic touch on current hits from U2, Pebbles, New Edition, Giant Steps, New Shoes, The California Raisins, Sheena Easton and Jeffrey Osborne. Get outta here Harryhausen, there's a new stop motioneer here, namely director Robert Morgan with his 2023 film ‘Stopmotion'. Forget about the California Raisins, Wallace & Gromit, and Yukon Cornelius, those are for last millennium's children. Kids these days like their stop motion like their chicken nuggets, gross and meaty, and this has meat for days. But is just having meaty puppets enough to make a film good, or does it also need things like believable characters and non-played out tropes?

Thank you so much for tuning in! On today's show, I am joined once again by Jason Lady, a talented and creative author as well as an 80's Pop Culture lover, just like me! On this episode, we are taking a deep dive into one of Jason's favorite aspects of retro pop culture - the infamous food & beverage mascots! You will learn all about the backstory behind some of your favorite food and beverage mascots from yesteryear including (but not limited to): Mr. Peanut, Fred the Baker, Cool Spot, and the Kool-Aid Man to name just a few! It was so much fun doing this episode with Jason, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did putting it together! Here are several spots where you can find Jason:https://twitter.com/JasonRLadyhttps://www.instagram.com/jasonrladyauthor/https://www.facebook.com/JasonRLadyAuthorhttps://www.amazon.com/stores/Jason-R.-Lady/author/B07YN3QFKR?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=trueOn the podcast, I mentioned that Michael Jackson and Ray Charles appeared as clay animation figures in a California Raisins music video at one point. Okay, so here's the story: Four grapes shrivel their way into fame, and make records that revive Motown classics. You know, that old chestnut. Along the way the quartet have adventures through fruit and veggie puns and are provided plenty of opportunity to show off their vocals. Here now is the story of how this fruity show came to Saturday Morning. Why? Who? How? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this look at THE CALIFORNIA RAISIN SHOW! Well, that sure escalated quickly... What started out as a new marketing campaign to sell more dried fruit, quickly grew into a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. This is the story of The California Raisins, the Claymation hit from the 80s that not only sold a lot of raisins but became a moneymaking sensation in the process. Toys, albums, and TV specials: let's look back at how The California Raisins quickly cemented themselves as a huge part of the 1980s. Bonus 1980s content: Patreon.com/80s

Labor Day has arrived, which means the unofficial end of summer. For gamers the beginning of fall means only one thing, some of the 2023's biggest releases are almost upon us! Even more important than that news is the start of a brand-new Halloween influenced tournament! We promised release dates, and we have several going all the way to November. For those who are not willing to wait, Gunbrella is releasing this month. For those who looking for something to do on a cold wet day in October, can look forward to Long Gone Days and the remake of Front Mission 2. And for the those who like to get their holiday shopping done early, November sees several releases, including the holiday themed Ebenezer and the Invisible World. On very rare occasions do the Grinders get to all review a movie together. Although they have their own reviews, the Grinders all saw The Flash. Is it the worst superhero movie of the year, the decade, or all existence? Or maybe it was fantastic? Besides the Flash, Frank also reviewed some horror movies and Eric reviewed the classic Jurassic Park 3-D. It isn't all fun and games for the Grinders as they have a long list of Stinkos. DC fans are still mourning the loss of beloved Kevin Conroy, only to be hit with the devastating news that the massively talented Arleen Sorkin has died. It was also sad news for gameshow fans as the legendary Bob Barker has also died. Adding to the tragedy, the Grinders also address a couple of mental health related shootings. To counteract the sadness of the Stinkos, the Grinders have several Sweetos to bring up the mood! They are all good, but they pale in comparison to Frank's ultimate Sweeto, his brand-new car! Even better news than getting a new car is a brand-new tournament! With Halloween right around the corner, the Grinders made a list of a popular costume choice: the product mascot! 64 of the best consumer mascots are about to square off to determine who is rightfully the greatest mascot of them all! With a new tournament comes vicious new rumors, like these: I heard it through the grapevine that the California Raisins hate chocolate in a thin candy shell. Mr. Peanut personally blames the Scrubbing Bubbles for his need to use a monocle. Smokey the Bear and Morris the Cat used to be great friends, until they both fell in love with Lamb Chop and began a vicious rivalry. Elves are constantly at war with other factions of elves, and none hate each other more that the tree dwelling Keeblers and the pantry living Snap, Crackle, and Pop. The Crash Test Dummies need a new airbag, and they have volunteered Twinkie the Kid. Spudz McKenzie has a new furry chew toy that just keeps going and going and going and going and..... With unofficial fall here and real fall just a few weeks away, we will have less sunlight, colder weather, and more rain. Perfect weather to be a gamer! I'm confused. Can anyone explain to me why Sony made a fat Batarang? A Fatarang, so to speak.
What do church metrics and California Raisins have in common? Dr. John Harris tells us in this great conversation, including a lot about the digital church and how we make disciples online. What gets me excited is how Dr. Harris is taking advantage of the digital medium and building something unique and wonderful. He also gets very real about metrics that really matter. Previously on the Advent Calendar House, we flew a sleigh made out of a dumpster into space with the California Raisins in “Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration.”
In this episode we explore the little claymation Motown fruit group that had an absolute GRIP on our culture in the late 80s, The California Raisins!
I scream! You scream! We all scream for a conversation about anthropomorphized food and the existential dread of capitalism! Sarah and Lauren spiral out about the wild and brief history of the California Raisins, a legendary 1980's marketing campaign for nobody's favorite snack, raisins. Claymation and classic R&B music came together in a fun and kinda racist way...for the kids.
