A light-hearted basketball podcast. Hosted by a shooter on the court 🀠& a shooter off it 📷 Jack McVeigh & Darren Barker
With Jack McVeigh and Darren Barker
It's been a hectic month for Jack. Getting married, forcing Darren on the dance floor, missing his honeymoon to train with the Boomers, grinding in that camp and games trying to make the team and finally, the viral video of him and Will Magnay being told that they would be Olympians and have made the Australian Boomers squad.
It's officially offseason time so that means the start of a new season for us. Season 3 tips off with firstly, a catchup revealing Jack's offseason focuses and Darren dipping his toes into F45 and hiring a business coach, then we move into NBL free agency moves and dive into our thoughts about player movement and what we like (and don't) about some key signings.
It's been an absolute wild ride for Jack these last couple of weeks. From winning the Championship with his beloved JackJumpers to capping it off with a Grand Final MVP he basically spoke into existence, the “wow we might actually win this” moment, matching tattoos, the famous Scott Roth photo with an axe in hand… there's a whole heap of great things to talk about here and we did just that.
What a wild week it was after that insane shot Jack made to give his JackJumpers a 2-1 advance in the Championship Series. As Jack puts his focus on game 4, Darren talks about the madness that ensued after the game winner, the photo's he got, the overwhelming attention that has been coming Jack's way and lastly, this one isn't done. Melbourne will come into Tasmania ready to roll.
With Tasmania down 0-1 in the championship series, we chat about how game 1 went in our eyes including Jack mentioning that sometimes in such intense games those 2 hours can turn into a big blur. Rivalries between family members , that ‘little island' comment, getting away from basketball and Darren being told he is absolutely punching above his weight.
Jack's prepping for game 1 of the Championship Series but Darren couldn't get himself and jumped back on the mic to get stuck into it before game 1 happens. Melbourne, Tasmania, best of 5 for the 'chip - this one will be good.
Both Playoff series are heading to a deciding game 3 so what more could we want? Jack's on the road to Perth so Darren is taking you through another great in-person game in Tassie as well as dropping 3 elite winning players in the Melbourne Illawarra series.
It's that time of the season we all love, Finals. Players, fans, all of us. It's a pressure cooker out there and it's glorious. But yes of course emotions are high and yes, Jack talks going “Draymond Green on them” about his run in with friend, Lachie Olbrich so don't you worry about that. Tassie are rolling, Perth are waiting for them, let's get stuck into it all.
Ahh what a time it is, Finals time. Darren is making the trip down to Tasmania to watch Jack and the JackJumpers go at it against the Hawks, there's high vibes in the air as hosting a podcast together is a wholesome topic, plus Jack reveals way too much about his pre game routine.
We are both coming off the back of the NBL Awards Night and what better way to summarise it then to hop on a recording together. Jack from the players side, Darren from the NBL media side, it was fun for both parties and there was definitely lots to talk about so we did just that.
How good were the JJ's fans in Melbourne, though? Jack and especially Darren felt the love there. We get stuck into the Awards before MVP night next Monday, 2 legends of the game say goodbye and those Hawks are up and about in a big way.
Oh yes that wonderful flex from Jack over the weekend is discussed, Darren has a new breakfast discovery and we dive into the Play-In Tournament including Jack motivating himself this week by asking the question, “are we real or are we not?”.
If you can't hype up your co-host then what's the point? With Jack out of action due to a tooth infection Darren takes the opportunity to hype the great man up, specifically his consistency all season and his chances at a First or Second All-NBL team. Some Makuach Maluach love, why DJ Vasiljevic re-signed with Adelaide and a few more bits and bobs.
What's up with Phoenix? Which player has the ‘sexiest' game? It's the business end of the season and with the ladder looking so tight we remind everyone that every point does indeed matter so now is not the time to be running down the clock. Let's talk about it all.
It's Darren, the microphone and no that's it actually. An early game for the JackJumpers this round means that Jack is on the road but the show rolls on don't worry. It's an intimate one-on-one episode as Darren chops it up with himself about the NBL and WNBL including what the go with the Sydney Kings is, a personal favourite having his best game as a pro and who the WNBL championship favourites are right now.
It's the time to set new goals, 2024 is here so that is what everyone typically goes to. But it's a fun process to reflect on last year as well as look ahead to this year. We both run through goals for 2024 with the aim to hold each other accountable for them. Fitness, friendships, reading, app development, weddings - 2024 is going to be a big one.
It's a big old Christmas mood in the online studio as we talk about everything that we've both been up to over the past few days including Jack's Christmas Day game, lots of food, gaming, family time and what it's actually like being an athlete around this time of year.
We told you this time of year was a busy one so this week Jack is flying solo. Darren's somewhere else getting in the festive spirit but Jack is feeling festive himself, singing Christmas carols for you and talking about prepping for the JackJumpers Christmas Day game. That, realising how quickly time flies and that maybe your “gaming on the move” days are over and we (both) show some love for Corey ‘Homicide' Williams and Drm. Merry Christmas all.
It's beginning to look a lot like… NBL teams separating themselves from the pack. Yes it's almost Christmas time but Jack talks about how now is the time that teams typically separate themselves from others and really put themselves in a good spot. The McCarron training incident, Goulding's flurry against Brisbane and off court it's a good time to simply appreciate family and those wholesome moments we get with them.
Jack celebrates more on an alley-oop then he did with a game winner, we throw a ton of love towards Alex Starling and the way he plays, how we're filling up cups with nature walks and coffee catch-ups - this is episode 15!
A personalised wedding song, a new brand formed, Darren takes a leaf out of Jack's writing book and spreads some love to the WNBL… it may have been a week off in the NBL but there's lots happening regardless. Some sport, some life things, let's stuck get into it yeah? Thanks for listening all.
After Jack's game winner in Cairns you know how we had to open up the episode. It was a big mood on and off the court and even Jack admits to watching it back lots of times and enjoying the moment from different perspectives. That, Darren plugging NBL products, some photographers shout outs and we look ahead to the week off in the NBL.
After the Illawarra Hawks let go of their head coach we talk holding coaches and players accountable, holding ourselves accountable as podcasters (maybe not AS important) and have you ever heard of a pro baller playing in their own game and then an hour later being a photographer on the sideline to another? Pretty cool stuff from Taylah Simmons in the WNBL.
One of the best games Darren has been to live in a wild Melbourne vs Perth finish, the Jackies get back in the win column and we've got a cheeky plug for Jack's website and weekly newsletter so get around that as well. Thanks for listening, as always.
Just when you think you have things worked out, opinions formed... something changes. Unexpected winning streaks, losing streaks, that's what makes it fun. Brisbane are hot, United are hotter, we're grateful for our 30's, weight coach, recovery - this is episode 10 of season 2.
Round 4 in the NBL season is done already? As per usual the season is flying but we are loving it. DJ Vasiljevic injected some new life into Adelaide, as did Jo Lual-Acuil Jr (even though Melbourne don't need it) did for United and so did big Alan 'Sauce' Williams to the Phoenix. All that, as well as Cayla George in the WNBA grabbing our attention.
Credit to players that play their role so so well, Rob Loe, you were on both of our minds this week. Flowers, Toohey, Madut - a bunch tickled our fancy as we dive into that, mortgages, tagging players in content and more. Oh and thanks for listening, as always. Shooters! Podcast is hosted by NBL player, Tasmania JackJumper, Jack McVeigh and a hoops fan, in the NBL Digital and Media team, Darren B
We caught up face-to-face in Melbourne, Jack came to town with Darren present, the Jackies cooked up a big win on the road, Fab shattered a backboard and let's talk about Milton Doyle, that man is as smooth as anyone in the league. Shooters! Podcast is hosted by NBL player, Tasmania JackJumper, Jack McVeigh and a hoops fan, in the NBL Digital and Media team, Darren Barker.
The NBL is officially back and we're here to talk the talk about everything in round 1. Delly and Melbourne and firing, there's already an MVP candidate in New Zealand, Jack talks about how Tassie "shot themselves in the foot" and the guys are in sync as they show each other some love in the return of Hype Up and dive more into what each owning a house now means.
The two newest Vice Captains for the Tasmania JackJumpers are on the podcast together and in the same room, what a setup. Our own Jack McVeigh and teammate Fabijan Krslovic not only live together but have just recently been named as two captains of their ball club. Congrats fellas. Rate your housemate, NBL Trivia and a winning mentality for "Fab", this is a fun one.
Fantasy basketball, let's get stuck into it. We both made an NBL SuperCoach team and debated our picks PLUS made our very own Shooters pod league (Shooters Pod 132517 are the details) so join it now and if you win you'll get a signed Jack McVeigh jersey. Preseason hoops, the Boomers campaign and we're heading up to the Gold Coast for the NBL Blitz this week, how lovely.
Friend of Jack's turns friend of the show as Ben Ayre joins the panel as we talk confidence, trash talk, going for that NBL1 championship and more.
We're ready for you to begin, NBL season. We take a look at where all NBL teams are currently at in terms of rosters and throw out our biggest talking points for every one. Jack also makes Darren choose his way-too-early prediction for NBL champion which always ends well.
Hey, we're back. Yes we'll admit we took some weeks off but our break is over and to be quite honest with you, both of us are pretty pumped to get back into our chats and into the NBL season in general. Jack's in full offseason workout mode with Tassie training sessions kicking off and Darren's in NBL offseason mode for himself with NBL1 and Summer League taking over. Good to be back, all.
The importance of role players come up every single year around Playoff time and with good reason. Let's talk about it. Caleb Martin, you killed it, Gabe Vincent, Duncan Robinson - you all lifted your game. Bruce Brown, Aaron Gordon, I'm looking at you during the NBA Finals. Caleb Martin almost single handedly allowed Miami to beat Boston in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference NBA Playoffs, so it begs the question, do role players win Playoff series or even Championships?
Jimmy Butler, a great of the game, Jimmy Butler when in the Playoffs, I don't even know how to describe it.A switch flicks, a different level is unlocked, it's so fun to watch and follow the journey. From the on court show to the off court press conferences, one of my favourite things in the league.
Our first in-person recording, and we're coming to you live from Jack's apartment in Heidelberg, Germany. We discuss the wonders and quirks of Germany and hit on NBL Free Agency as a whole.
We're here to learn everything about what Jack thought of Tasmania's second season in the NBL, what he's feeling and thinking about next season, as well as just getting to know a bit more about the great man.
There I said it, Banchero is unofficially the NBA Rookie Of The Year for season 2022/23. He has to be, from day one with the Orlando Magic he was the alpha and never looked back. I love Jalen Williams, what he has done for OKC in year one can't go unnoticed, the same with Walker Kessler and even Shaedon Sharpe to an extent, but only one name remains at the top, Paolo Banchero.
Georgia Amoore, just a kid from Ballarat lighting up the NCAA Tournament big stage. She became the all-time leader in 3's made in NCAA Tournament history, how about that? She has my attention and she's been balling for Virginia Tech. Welcome to the first of our 'Quickfire' episodes, it's in the moment, it's short and it's a bit of fun to tackle different topics, let us know what you think.
Experiencing the Sydney Kings winning the Championship is a big mood on ground level, but watching it overseas? That's a different story. We give an insight into both experiences as well as some cool content captured on the day. That, post-game dances after wins in Germany, anxiety while flying, 6 hour bus rides, a marriage in the family, stat chasing triple doubles - this is Episode 20.
Legit question, what are the benefits of jerseys with sleeves in basketball? Jack's first game in Germany, 2 MVP's are going to the big smoke in the USA (Shoutout Xavier Cooks and Cayla George) and thoughts and discussions around the weird and wonderful NBL Championship Series tied at 1-1.
Jack's hooping in Germany and the rumours are that Darren may join him in the near future. We may be on opposite sides of the country but we're back and we're talking all things Germany, language barriers, new teammates, first impressions, the lot. There's been some elevator drama back in Australia and we're both pretty pumped about the Championship Series starting. Have a listen to it all, danke shon.
We recap our run-in at the NBL Awards Night, plus, it's Playoff basketball time and the JackJumpers are right in the thick of it. Jack details the lead up to these big games including escaping the extreme weather in New Zealand (just). Lastly, Happy Valentine's day to all. Spread the love and listen to our podcast with your loved one.
The time has come, the 2022/23 NBL Regular Season is coming to a close and with the Season Awards right around the corner, we thought we better make our own calls and predictions on them. MVP, Next Generation Award, All-NBL Teams, we're doing the whole thing.
Dirk Nowitzki, Jack McVeigh and one foot fadeaway jump shots, it's an elite combination and the two players got to meet this week in Tassie. Hear about what lessons Dirk gave the JackJumpers, a new award in the NBL, why Rayjon Tucker is winning fans on and off the court and lastly, have we finally got an answer to the GOAT debate?
Let's talk Jack's career high (tied) in points, also about his back-to-back dunks that was fun until it wasn't. It's a big week if you're a McVeigh on the pod, but Darren got to experience some pretty cool moments over the week in the Tennis world, including meeting Novak Djokovic. We're talking those things, predictions, Last Chance U, Davo Hickey, the unreal support Jack has received, let's do this episode 14 thing.
What's with the amount of points players are scoring at the moment? Basketball has gone crazy over the last 2 weeks and we want to touch on it all. Christmas gifts, 2023 goals (100 push-ups anyone?), media careers, all things NBL photography at NBL Raw, toe injuries, episode 13 is a fun one folks.
We are honoured to be joined by Adelaide 36ers guard Sunday Dech as our first ever guest on the show. Specifically, we talk about his online blog, www.sundayservice.page, where he gives us all an insight into his thoughts and feelings on being a professional athlete in quite a cool way. That, Shooters! merch, hyping up some performances, Sunday's thoughts on Ian Clarke, we've got a lot for you this week and we're excited to bring it to you. Shoutout Sunday once again, a great man and a great chat!
We're hyping people up this episode by introducing a new segment, Jack gives Darren and Shooters! some love in Grateful For, and we talk about that big win against Sydney in typical JackJumpers fashion.
Double digit episodes calls for equipment upgrades, we've switched to some crispy Rode microphones as we chat through some interesting topics in the NBL, a newspaper shoutout to the pod (thank you) and Darren throws some questions to Jack about who the funniest, most athletic, best trasher talker etc is in the league. Thanks for listening all.
