Pete and Darius discuss the game, diving into the preparedness of the team and commitment to the game plan, the Lakers ability to play small and still rebound well enough, the bench scoring and shot making from Gabe and DFS, and much more. The Lakers, after Boston's disappointing loss, continue their road trip as the injury-riddled team limped into Brooklyn to face the Nets. But the Lakers did not get step-up games from Luka (8-26 shooting) and Austin Reaves (3-14 from the field), nor did they get a great effort on the boards (16 offensive rebounds for BKN) as they wasted good shooting games from Gabe Vincent (24 points, 6-9 from 3) and Jordan Goodwin (17 points, 5-6 from 3) in a 111-108 loss to the Nets. Join the guys from the LFB as they recap the game, why coach JJ Redick is upset about the Lakers' effort, and share what's up ahead for the team as they continue to fight for a top seed in the Western Conference. 0:00 ... Hello and Welcome to the show. 0:51 ... Bruce live Bet Online Commercial Read. 1:29 ... Bruce introduces Ryan Ward, the host of the Jello Jigglin podcast and reporter for LakersNation.com. 2:07 ... Ryan explains "Jello Jigglin," the name of his podcast which honors Chick Hearn, the legendary Lakers announcer. 3:06 ... Everything begins and ends with LeBron James when it comes to the Lakers ... Bruce thinks he's the GOAT but Ryan has an alternate opinion .... Ryan explains why it's still Michael Jordan for him. 6:12 ... LeBron's son Bronny is a Laker and defense appears to be his strength .... Ryan shares his thoughts on Bronny and how he can use his defense to succeed in the NBA. JJ Redick said Lu Dort could be a model for Bronny's upward trajectory. 8:56 ... Ryan feels Bronny can eventually become a solid shooter and he used Jason Kidd as an example. 11:03 ... JJ Redick is a rookie coach and he's LeBron's guy (for now), but the fans are not expecting much from him. But he'll still take heat if the team flounders out of the gate. Ryan ridicules those who compare Redick to a young Pat Riley. 14:13 ... Bronny has gotten all the attention but top draft choice Dalton Knecht is a three point shooter and could be a major factor right out of the box. 15:21 ... Ryan sizes up the Lakers backcourt situation with newly re-signed Max Christie joining Austin Reaves, D'Angelo Russell, and Gabe Vincent. 16:38 ... Christie signed a nice contract (4 yrs/$32m) but is that deal something the Lakers should have committed to? 18:43 ... This is the last gasp of the LeBron era and Ryan feels the rebuilding process is upon us soon. He even makes a bold prediction about LeBron's future. 20:42 ... Anthony Davis is still at the top of his game and this could be the "last best chance" for AD and LBJ to get one more ring. 22:07 ... Ryan questioned why JJ Redick dissed AD's defense last season and suggested it might have been personal. 24:28 ... World B asks Ryan about AD's shot selection and what he needs to do to be dominant on offense. While three point shooting has never been his thing, Redick loves the three and may ask AD to shoot them more frequently. 25:47 ... Bruce asks Ryan if the supporting cast is good enough for a long playoff run without a mid-season trade? 27:04 ... Has Rob Pelinka had a successful tenure as general manager after winning it all in 2020? Ryan had a major problem with the Russell Westbrook trade and agrees with Dwight Howard about how breaking up the 2020 champions was a mistake. 30:40 ... The Clippers would like to consider themselves rivals of the Lakers and now they have their own new arena. But much like the Nets vs the Knicks in New York, the Clips will never be the equal of the Lakers. Ryan had fun describing how the Lakers built a new scoreboard in response to the Clippers massive new video board but he couldn't tell the difference between the new one and previous one. 35:04 ... Steve Ballmer could have moved the Clippers to Seattle but he chose money over team success. 35:39 ... This is the first time that the fans see Jeanie Buss as "public enemy #1" even though she is a great person. Bruce shares his thoughts on how Jeanie hasn't had it easy with family conflicts affecting the operation of the team. And the relatively small number of people in the inner circle has sometimes given LeBron more opportunities to exert his influence. 37:55 ... Ryan says Lakers Nation is convinced that LeBron is running the entire franchise and the fans are very negative towards the Lakers heading into the season. 40:06 ... The Lakers have usually found success trading for stars and even though they've drafted well, they always trade promising young guys for "one guy." 41:34 ... World B tees up a discussion on whether the team has a "Post LeBron Exit Strategy." Ryan feels the future is really uncertain and their pattern of trading young players for stars probably won't continue. 45:27 .... The Knicks would like to emulate the Lakers in the way they attract stars, but now they're taking a different approach and the Knicks are hitting their stride. 46:50 ... Magic Johnson and Anthony Edwards recently feuded over Ant's statement about old school guys not being as good as the new school guys. We all ridiculed Edwards for his bizarre take. 51:20 ... World B asks Ryan about Kobe vs LeBron and Ryan feels Kobe's mentality set him apart from LeBron. He was a killer on the court, the way his mind worked, and the way he carried himself were all amazing. Ryan said LeBron can do everything on the court but off the court he was not as great as Kobe. Kobe was an inspiration in many non-basketball situations. 54:24 ... Bruce feels Kobe is an eternal life force who remains a presence in the hearts and minds of basketball fans everywhere. 55:46 ... Bruce feels that the Celtics and Lakers complete each other and measure themselves against each other. There is a lot of respect there. But Ryan feels Cedric Maxwell is one player that Lakers fans really hate. 57:54 ... Bruce thanks Ryan for joining the show and says goodbye . TRT 58:41

For most of Monday's Game 2 in Denver, the Lakers were in position to send the series back to Los Angeles tied at 1 game each. At points, it looked like they were guaranteed to do it, pushing their lead up to 20 in the second half. But little by little, Denver chipped away. LA's offense went into a near full hibernation in the second half (38 points) and while they did manage to get a few big buckets down the stretch — a pair of triples from LeBron, a drive and finish from D'Angelo Russell, a baseline jumper from Austin Reaves — it wasn't nearly enough to make up for the loooooooooong stretches of totally stagnant, ineffective offense. Tied on the last possession, the Nuggets put the ball in Jamal Murray's hands and let him do what Murray does. Stepback jumper over Davis. Game. 101-99, Denver up 2-0, Lakers on life support. The Lakers got a superhuman effort from Anthony Davis in the first half, especially. Russell bounced back from a horrible Game 1 to hit seven triples. LeBron was huge in the fourth quarter on both sides of the ball, despite fighting fatigue. But there were enough mistakes and poor performances; Rui Hachimura again was a non-factor, Spencer Dinwiddie and Gabe Vincent combined for zero points in 25 minutes. Darvin Ham missed a chance to challenge what appeared to be a ticky-tack foul on LeBron against Murray down the stretch. Reaves had a critical turnover down the stretch, and Davis faded late. This was, in every practical sense, a must-win game. LeBron certainly played like he knew it. Any loss in this game would have been hard to recover from, emotionally. This one, however, was brutal. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers blow a huge lead in the second half, and the season is on life support. SEGMENT 2: Too many little mistakes, too many performances that weren't up to standard.SEGMENT 3: The Lakers might get some reinforcements, but are they coming too late? Trevor Lane and Sean Davis discuss some of the defensive and offensive strategies that LA can employ, as well as the mental boost that a game 1 win would provide. This win didn't quite look like the others, but in the end the Lakers got what they came for, and once again defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, winning Tuesday in the 7/8 Play-In Game. It's the fourth time in five this season LA has topped the Pelicans, and the second time in three days - both on the road - and this one is undoubtedly the most significant. It pushes the Lakers into the first round of the main draw, where they'll kick off a series against the Nuggets beginning Saturday in Denver. It's been a very long time since the Lakers beat Denver, and there will be plenty to say about that series between now and Saturday, but for today it's worth noting how the Lakers got it done on Tuesday, and how that might influence things going forward. Because while Anthony Davis and LeBron James played hard (Davis through back spasms) and gave it what they had, neither was efficient offensively (12-36 combined from the floor). The Lakers as a team didn't crack 42% from the floor. But they didn't turn the ball over (eight total TOs), they were solid from 3-point range (over 40%), and they made their FTs (26-29, including 9-9 in the fourth quarter). And most importantly, other guys stepped up, whether D'Angelo Russell with big early production combined with a critical steal and a clutch corner triple, or Gabe Vincent playing high end defense and scoring nine points (which doesn't soundn like much until you remember he had seven over his last six games combined.) The Lakers had to grind this one out. They had to play defense. They had to hit their free throws down the stretch. They had to win without the best performances from their stars. Thanks to an excellent road trip and a well-timed skid from the Sacramento Kings, the Lakers showed up at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday with a chance to move, however temporarily, into the 8th spot in the Western Conference. That would, however, require a strong effort against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who entered as the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference. So no pushover there. Winner winner, chicken dinner. LA beats the Cavs, 116-97. After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Lakers took control of the game, and after letting Cleveland take the lead in the third following a huge run, the Lakers took it right back and never let the Cavs back into the game. Ultimately, it was one of their better games inside this hot streak, especially on the defensive end. The Lakers were particularly effective against Cleveland's guard combo of Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, holding them to 36 points on 15-38 shooting. The Lakers, meanwhile, got big performances from Anthony Davis (including six blocks), LeBron James (24/5/12) and a game high 28 from D'Angelo Russell. Taurean Prince, meanwhile, kicked in with 18 off the bench, and Gabe Vincent was +15 in 14 minutes, despite not scoring and only notching a pair of assists. That's because of his defensive work. The Lakers move on now to play Minnesota tomorrow at home. This game will go a long way to determining whether the Lakers can hold onto that 8 spot, or even move up with a huge season-finale upcoming against the Pelicans. After dropping Friday's game to the Pacers in Indiana, the Lakers restarted their roadtrip in Brooklyn with a clear mandate - sweep the final three games, all coming against weak teams. And on the one hand, the Lakers did some serious work early, running out to a 17-0 lead, while ballooned to 31-11 by the end of the first quarter. That gave them some wiggle room over the final three quarters, and unfortunately the Lakers decided to use it. Particularly in the third quarter, where the Lakers committed a parade of turnovers that let the Nets cut a lead that had grown as high as 26 back down to single digits. Chalk up some of them to to decent play from Brooklyn, but most of them were simply a result of sloppiness from LA. It was the difference between an easy win where the starters need to play deep into the fourth and one where LeBron, Anthony Davis and Co. could have sat down much faster. There were plenty of good stat lines. LeBron James had 40 points, tying a career high with nine 3-pointers (on only 10 tries). Anthony Davis finished with 24/14. Rui Hachimura finished with 20 points on a very efficient 8-12 shooting. As a team the Lakers were over 54% from the floor, and held Brooklyn to 42%. Literally the only reason the Nets had a chance was because the Lakers let them. The Lakers only had two points off the bench, a bucket from Gabe Vincent, who played 14 minutes in his first game in months, and only his sixth overall. The Lakers tried a few different lineup combinations, and have some choices to make going forward. Do you trust Darvin Ham to manage this? In the end, it was a game much like others they've played this year -- plenty to like, but just enough to shake your head at to keep it from being fully satisfying. But they got the win they needed, and now can head to Toronto with a chance to keep a 5-1 trip alive. Some interesting news of late for the Lakers ahead of the third game of a thus-far undefeated road trip. First, D'Angelo Russell told Hoopshype that he'd like to remain a Laker if possible, but also implied that he'll be weighing his options this offseason, including his contract player option. The season began with everyone assuming D'Lo would be traded before the deadline. Instead, he's having arguably the best season of his career. He's always been a polarizing player, but has the performance shifted perceptions? Where could he potentially go?Also, Shams Charania reported that Gabe Vincent could be available for action soon, maybe even Sunday in Brooklyn. Obviously, there have been reports of Vincent's imminent return, only to prove premature. But Vincent has actually been ramping up of late. Assuming he's able to play, how difficult will integrating a player who's only got five games with his teammates under his belt? Is the effort actually worth it as the Lakers try to hit their stride and climb the standings?HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky... featuring special guest Allen Sliwa, 710 ESPN SEGMENT 1: D'Angelo wants to remain a Laker... and also has leverage over the team. The Lakers still have designs on moving up in the Western Conference, and the narrowest of windows in which to get it done. There are opportunities. The Suns, for example, have an insanely brutal schedule over their last 10 games, and the Lakers do own the tiebreaker against Phoenix. Sacramento is still in reach, and has a harder schedule than LA. But if the Lakers want to make any of this happen - and want to avoid the possibility of dropping to 10th, or even worse, open the door for a red hot Houston Rockets team, tonight's game at home against a moribund Philadelphia 76ers is simply one they should win, and must win. Must, must, must. Must. And it's those "should win" games where the Lakers have tended to struggle, playing down to the level of competition. Can't happen tonight. Meanwhile, the Lakers announced that Jalen Hood-Schifino will undergo a procedure to repair a disc issue in his back, and while no timetable was announced, it would certainly figure that he'll miss a good chunk of time, possibly the rest of the year. No impact on the big club... which really is the jumping off point for the conversation. That losing Hood-Schifino makes no difference for their fortunes shines a light on the decision to draft him in the first place over players more capable of playing an NBA role as rookies. But that question - did they draft the right guy for THIS year, is a different one than whether Hood-Schifino is a bust. It's waaaaay too early for that. And meanwhile, his stats with South Bay are actually quite good. It's just a shame his season has been so short, both because he's been injured a lot and because the Lakers couldn't send him to the G-League nearly as much as they wanted because of the injury to Gabe Vincent. Finally, a great question from a viewer on the YT page: With Cam Reddish back, would it make sense to put him in the starting lineup in order to boost the defense, and bring some scoring to the second unit? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers must win on Friday. There's just no way around it. SEGMENT 2: Hood-Schifino needs back surgery, which opens up the debate about drafting him in the first place. SEGMENT 3: Would a change in the lineup make sense? Many things related to the ability of the Lakers to make a run at the end of the year, and potentially into the playoffs, have to do with knowing who might be available to play. To that end, Monday was a fairly instructive day... kinda, sorta. We did learn, though not from the team, that PF/C Christian Wood's knee is going to keep him out weeks longer, possibly through the end of the season. So that's not good. There was conflicting information about Gabe Vincent and Jarred Vanderbilt. While some reports said that both would miss the rest of the year, others noted that Vincent expects to play again and is working his way back. For his part, Darvin Ham spoke about both in a manner that implied the team is expecting both to suit up before the end of the season. Clearly, though, Vanderbilt is further behind than Vincent. And what do the Lakers do with Vincent when he's back? On the one hand, with Spencer Dinwiddie not quite panning out as expected, the Lakers could potentially kick the tires on Vincent, despite having only played five games this year. On the other, they really don't have the luxury of experimentation at this point. Regardless, the absence of Wood leaves them with only one other true big on the roster, and that one (Jaxson Hayes) has his limitations. This does tilt the roster smaller and plays away from theoretical strengths, while shining a light on potential shortcomings (like rebounding). Finally, LeBron James is on a new podcast with JJ Redick, and it's made for basketball nerds. Like, really nerdy. But a fun listen, because it's a great window into one of the things that truly separates LeBron from... well, everyone. The man's hoops IQ is off the charts, and when combined with his drive and physical gifts, you get arguably the greatest player the game has ever seen. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers are getting players back... sort of. SEGMENT 2: Figuring out what to do with guys as they return isn't as simple as it sounds. The Lakers may not have been playing truly inspired basketball, the kind that gets fans and media fired up and primed for the postseason, but they have, save that putrid stretch following the In-Season Tournament, won more than they've lost. Now, coming off a very impressive home win over the conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers face another test against a playoff-caliber team. But this time, the Sacramento Kings come in weaker than LA, having been in a weeks long semi-slump that has dropped them into the back half of the playoff bracket, only 1.5 games ahead of the Lakers. This is a big opportunity for the Lakers to gain ground on a vulnerable squad, and give themselves a shot to hold the tiebreaker over the Kings, which could obviously come in handy by the end of the year. Lose, and that goes out the window (Sacramento won the first two games of the season series, with both games coming very early in the year). So what do the Lakers need to watch out for? Start with three point shooting. The Kings take a ton of them, but some of their best shooters (De'Aaron Fox, Keegan Murray) are in big slumps right now. They need to keep it that way. In strength vs. weakness, the Kings both tend to put teams on the line a lot, and don't get there much themselves. That plays into strengths on both sides for LA they will certainly look to exploit. But fundamentally, we're going to spend a lot of time talking about Domantas Sabonis vs. Anthony Davis, because the Lakers need the OKC version of AD, as opposed to the Denver edition.
