Our guest on the Talkin’ About Podcast this week is Emi Howe, who in 2012 was diagnosed with breast cancer and beat it. Emi is a body therapist and has been for 16 years, helping a lot people who are suffering from or who have suffered with cancer, using her own experience to improve her therapy. She started BodEquality in a bid to change the perception of how bodies are represented in the media, as well how the use of research can improve things going forward. She hasn’t always had the words to describe what it is she was feeling, but as the climate shifts positively towards a more open and honest world she has discovered the language is there and everyone is beginning to use it. When she was initially diagnosed with cancer she did a series of photoshoots, 9 in total, documenting her recovery on an Instagram account called ‘The Cancer Nude’. She has been involved with a campaign for breast cancer awareness with Marks & Spencer which was a pivotal moment for her, and lead her to speak on Loose Women about bodies and how the process of recovering from cancer has given her a lot more respect for the human body, she feels more loyal to it. She won the Body Therapist of the year award and works with companies, delivering workshops and speeches as well as creating resources, ranging from picture books to work place body image training. She says “There’s always a reason for these things and you can either use it for your gain and think wow has it given me back a lot, or you can let it absorb you and I guess that’s a big choice, a choice on how you can grow out of the situation” Find out more about Emi here: Instagram: @bodequality https://bodequality.com/ Stay tuned as the podcast grows in a positive way! Today’s guest is the next in our Music and Mental Health series! He first crashed onto the scene when he founded the British punk rock band Doctors of Madness in 1975, known for being the forerunners of the punk movement. Back then known as ‘Kid’ Strange they toured the world, being supported by bands including The Sex Pistols, The Jam and Joy Division to name just a few and later touring Japan and appearing at festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival. Not one to be tied down to just one creative outlet, he has also appeared in numerous movies including Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman, Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York and most recently the last episode of Harry Potter. As a multi-hyphenate creative he has also gone onto contribute to publications such at GQ, The Sunday Telegraph, Tatler and The Independent as well as curating many ambitious and successful events and shows including the immersive multi disciplinary operatic collaboration with composer Gavin Bryars called “Language is a virus from outer space” based on the life and work of American writer William S Burroughs. It is no wonder that he has also become increasingly involved with education along his journey and he now devotes a lot of his time to working with young music students in the UK., Hong Kong, Sweden and the USA. In 2012 he was awarded a prestigious Fellowship of The Higher Eduction Academy Award of which there are only 350 in the country. And I can assure you, that is only the very tip of a huge career that spans decades, the list of talents and creative projects is endless, from writing programmes for Radio 4 and running his live chat show A Mighty Big, to curating theatre shows and exhibitions featuring artists such as Kate Tempest, Gavin Turk and Richard Wilson. A bi-weekly check in with Charlotte and George :)
Our guest this week is Kelly Strange, who has worked her way through being a student to becoming the Associate Dean at London College of Fashion (UAL). She was born in London but grew up in Hertfordshire, but living in Hertfordshire didn’t suit at all, so she begun dressing in a London style to show how much she needed to be there, she is very much a city girl. After leaving school, Kelly went into advertising, working with lifestyle and entertainment brands, after a short stint there she went to study her degree in photography, but studied at a fashion university. After finishing her degree, she became fashion photographer, but quickly noticed she much preferred the academic side of the industry and couldn’t handle the anxieties of freelance life. So after a couple of years of being freelance, she went to Goldsmiths to do a masters in Image & Communication theory and practice, she was the only person in her masters doing fashion and it was there she got offered a job at South East Essex College. Kelly became a teacher in contextual studies on a photography course at SSEC, teaching on a Higher National Diploma course on Further Education and soon became course leader, having never done this before- it was a 3 day a week position. After being course leader for a while, she then actually wrote a degree course for SSEC and ran it. At the same time London College of Fashion asked her to do some lecturing on her days off and later became course leader for the same course she studied years earlier. She is an alumni of the course she was running. Quickly working her way through the ranks, Kelly became programme director, running the fashion communication programme, eventually landing in her current position as Associate Dean (deputy head) so works over all the courses at LCOF. As well as this, she then got the opportunity to teach the same courses in Hong Kong and did so for 5 years, then moved back to the big smoke but still works closely with the Beijing Institute of Fashion and Technology. Clearly a taste for the academe, alongside working, Kelly is doing her PHD at weekends on how we receive fashion media but from a philosophical frame work - which is about how fashion effects our being in the world - doing this she’s found out that online relationships are now a dimension of our being as they are so embedded. Kelly claims she’s never been a true fashionista, but somehow she’s managed to work her way to the top of London College of Fashion and write a PhD. Very impressive! On this week's episode of the Talkin’ About podcast we speak to Roxy Henley, who grew up in the beautiful seaside town of Brighton and at 10 raided the school costume department styling her own outfit for the production of Bugsy Malone. From there it became apparent she’d already found her talent, at 14 she went shopping with her friends to style and put outfits together for them. She later started studying at the John Morgan University in Cardiff doing a 4 year fashion marketing course 3 weeks after turning 18. In 2014 she moved to London and begun styling for the red carpet, sending clothes all around the world. Working with and soon picking up personal shopping clients this is where she fell in love with the idea of being a personal shopper. She believes personal shopping is more like therapy, or to be precise 70% therapy and 30% fashion. Deciding to take a step back from attending fashion week and fast fashion shows due to the very nature of the business, as it was making her feel worthless and insignificant with the meteoric rise of influences attending shows for aesthetic and not adding value. Focusing her efforts towards herself and the launch of her new blog and newsletter Empowerment Through Style. She says “It’s all about your shape, not your size. Everybody feels rubbish about themselves because of the media”

On today’s episode of the podcast, we’re incredibly excited to welcome Hope Virgo! Hope suffered with anorexia for over 4 years, before being admitted to a Mental Health Hospital in 2007. She lived in the hospital for a year, fighting one of the hardest battles of her life. Since being discharged, she has fought to stay well. She is now at the stage of 'ongoing recovery' and wants to use her experiences of mental health illness to champion the rights of others, inspire them to get well, and help break the stigma of mental illness. Not only that, she is the author of her best selling book ‘Stand Tall Little Girl’ a starkly honest, but inspiring account of her battle from hardship to the stars. Hope says ‘I know how anorexia makes you feel: you think she is your friend, you think she can solve everything and make you feel amazing … but she will destroy you and everything around you, piece by piece.’ You can find Hope here: http://hopevirgo.com/ https://www.instagram.com/hopevirgo_/ https://twitter.com/HopeVirgo Stay tuned as the podcast grows in a positive way! And we’re back! After Charlotte’s laptop recently got stolen, the Talkin’ About Podcast turned into a bit of a stagnant pond. It took a little time to sort the situation out, but I’m pleased to say we are now back online! We decided to bounce back with a very special and incredibly important episode, talking to our parents about what it’s like to manage children suffering with mental health problems and how does it feel? As they frequently express worries that it is their own fault we suffered from Anxiety and Depression, it’s important to recognise it was not. One of the first thing a parent will do is blame themselves, so we hope this episode will break that stigma! You’d think the mere idea of taking horses into a prison would cause a completely unimaginable situation. Fear not, it had the very opposite affect on HMP Portland inmates in Dorset. Started by Harriet Laurie, The Horse Course deals with people with behavioural problems and now mental health conditions using horses as a solution. She says ‘I treat everyone like they are horses, even my children’ A piece of advice we should all listen to. Joined by both founder Harriet and Trustee, Dr Nick Kosky, who is a consultant Psychiatrist we journey through the realms of how horses are changing the way we treat behavioural problems. Buckle up cowboy, this episode is a topic surrounding nothing but horses (quite literally)! On Episode 5 we're Talkin’ About the older generations and their mental health. What was it that made it such a taboo topic to talk about?
