Natalie celebrates the arrival of spring and the joys of beach hut culture along the British seaside. She shares her top five favourite unusual and extravagant beach huts, starting with the innovative Spyglass in Eastbourne, which rotates to follow the sun, and the artistic What Unearthed, inspired by local archaeological finds. The episode also highlights the quirky Crazy Golf 18 Holes in Folkestone, created from a repurposed crazy golf course, and a striking lighthouse-style beach hut by artist Pablo Branston. Finally, Natalie takes listeners back in time to Weymouth to explore a replica of the historical bathing machine used by King George III. This episode is a delightful exploration of unique beach huts that embody creativity and history, perfect for anyone planning a seaside getaway. KEY TAKEAWAYS Spring and Beach Hut Season: The arrival of spring brings longer daylight hours and the opportunity to enjoy beach days, prompting thoughts about holiday plans, particularly trips to the British seaside. Unique Beach Huts in Eastbourne: Eastbourne features two extraordinary beach huts, the Spyglass and What Unearthed, both designed as part of an initiative to create iconic beach hut designs. The Spyglass is notable for its ability to rotate for optimal views, while What Unearthed is inspired by local archaeological discoveries. Folkestone's Artistic Beach Huts: Folkestone is home to several remarkable beach huts, including Crazy Golf 18 Holes, created by sculptor Richard Wilson, which repurposes elements of a former crazy golf course, and a lighthouse-style hut by Pablo Branstein, which pays homage to 18th-century architectural styles. Historical Bathing Machines in Weymouth: Weymouth features a replica of a bathing machine, an early form of beach hut used by King George III. This wheeled structure allowed for modesty while bathing and represents a significant piece of seaside history. Exploration and Recommendations: The episode encourages listeners to explore these unique beach huts and historical structures during their summer travels, while also promoting other podcast episodes that delve deeper into specific topics related to beach huts and their history. BEST MOMENTS "The Spyglass is a unique beach hut because it was designed to move. It was mounted on a recessed turntable and the hut was designed to rotate 180 degrees to give you the best view." - Natalie Young "What's Unearthed is a striking geometric beach hut... inspired by local archaeological discoveries." - Natalie Young "He recycled an old crazy golf course, sawing it up into three sculptures in the shape of three beach huts." - Natalie Young "This fabulous hut is situated next to other brightly coloured huts along the waterfront and alongside the council's more mundane arrangements for parking maintenance." - Natalie Young "The bathing machine allowed the better off to enjoy the sea and at the same time protect their modesty whilst they took a dip." - Natalie Young Beach Huts Featured: https://jakstudio.co.uk/the-spy-glass/ https://www.foleyarchitects.com/case-studies/eastbourne-beach-hut https://www.richardwilsonsculptor.com/sculpture/18-holes-2008.html https://youtu.be/_w7u0suA7hI?si=1udIkiQLkL9Q09Up https://www.countrylife.co.uk/out-and-about/the-remarkable-tale-of-the-bathing-machine-258941 HOST BIO My name is Natalie Young. A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. Goon Pod Film Club can be found here: patreon.com/GoonPod and you can sign up free for a seven day trial. This month I've had the pleasure of speaking to two of the finest comedy writers of the last fifty years – Andrew Marshall and David Renwick – specifically about their 1986 film Whoops Apocalypse, which borrowed the title, a few plot elements and a handful of cast members from their 1982 one-series sitcom of the same name. The film was inspired by the events surrounding the Falklands War and the ongoing tensions between East and West and starred Peter Cook as increasingly deranged British premier Sir Mortimer Chris, Loretta Swit as US President Adams (no relation), Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld) as international terrorist Lacrobat and a whole host of familiar faces such as Richard Wilson, Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions.
Send us a textHey everyone, Richard Wilson here, founder of the Family Office Club. I'm excited you're going to be joining us for our live in-person event. There are a few housekeeping items that you should know about. 1. Networking App: WhovaFirst, we use a virtual networking app called Whova. Please register for that. You can connect with people through the app, set up meetings, see profiles of people on stage, and message others. When you message people, make sure to be clear about what you do. Have your one-liner dialed in to describe what you do and what you're looking for. Don't just reach out asking if people want to meet without giving them context about what you do.2. Understanding Investor ProfilesSecond, the people who do best at our event realize that the wealthiest investors in family offices typically don't wear name tags saying, “Hey, I'm Richard, CIO of my family office,” or “I'm a private investor.” They're often in industries like construction, dry cleaning, stem cells, healthcare, or they could be doctors, business owners, or founders. They've done well because they have strong cash flow, sold their business, gone public, or had an exit of some type. Many investors are humble, low-key, and a bit under the radar. The people who make the least connections are usually those who go around asking, “Are you an investor? Do you have money to invest?” This can put people on the defensive and make them say, “Oh no, that's not me, I think they're over there,” and send you on your way. So when you're networking, keep that in mind.3. Building Relationships & Adding ValuePeople want to do business with those who have expertise, passion, compelling stories, high conviction, and are just nice people they can relate to. The most successful people in our investor club—and I believe in most investor clubs—are genuine, authentic, and professional. They are politely persistent, not high-pressure, and focus on building relationships and following up. Most importantly, they add value first.4. Don't Miss the ContentOne thing that's not obvious, but happens every time at our events, is that the people who try to network the hardest often stay outside the room, shaking hands, asking everyone who they are and what they're doing. They think they're putting maximum effort into connecting, but it's a blanket approach, and they miss everything happening on stage. If you have more than one person from your team attending, definitely have someone in the room at all times. If you're the only person attending, stay in the room for 75-80% of the whole event. Only step out for panels on niche topics that aren't relevant to what you're focused on. There will be networking opportunities in the morning, during lunchtime, in the evening, and at cocktail hours. You could even organize your own private networking dinner.5. Pay Attention to SpeakersKeep in mind that every investor on stage is asked, “What do you invest in? What structures do you prefer? What strategies are you focused on? What are you working on right now? What's a recent deal you completed?” They'll make comments like, “My business partner or board member invests in this,” or “We're looking for opportunities structured this way,” or “We're focused on niche opportunities like this, this, or that.”You'll miss all of these valuable insights if you're outside the room networking and trying to maximize relationships. Instead, focus on listening to what's being shared on stage, then follow up with those who shared their thoughts, showing that you listened and can offer exactly what they asked for.We hope you have a great time! If there's anything we can improve upon, let us know. We're always striving to make each event faster-paced and more impactful.

Send us a textIn this powerful Family Office Club Podcast interview, Richard Wilson speaks with Paul Hutchinson—Executive producer of the film "Sound of Freedom", the founder of the Child Liberation Foundation and Liberating Humanity. As founder of the Child Liberation Foundation, Paul has led over 70 child rescue missions, using his success to fight human trafficking and change lives globally. Paul will be featured at the Family Office Super Summit from December 10th to 12th, where he'll participate in a fireside chat. For more details, visit https://familyoffices.com/super/How You Can Help:To support Paul's child rescue mission, visit https://childliberation.org/ ----------------------------------------------Early Entrepreneurial Ventures: A $20M Exit:Paul Hutchinson began his entrepreneurial career with a marketing company focused on mental health, helping individuals overcome anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. At 29, Paul sold the company for $20 million but felt there was more to his mission than financial success, leading him to new ventures.Pivot into Real Estate: Bridge Loan Capital's Evolution:After selling his first company, Paul shifted to real estate, founding Bridge Loan Capital, a firm that initially provided short-term, asset-based loans. However, after the 2008 financial crisis, Paul and his co-founder, John Pennington, pivoted into multifamily real estate—a more stable asset class.Building Integrity: The Bridge Investment Group's Success:Paul's success in real estate was driven by a strong commitment to integrity. Maintaining transparency with investors, and prioritizing relationships over short-term gains allowed Bridge Investment Group to thrive. Their ethical approach led to high-profile partnerships, like one with Don Hartman, who invested $300 million.Mastering Influence: The Key to Raising Capital and Impact:Whether raising capital or raising awareness for a cause, the key is to ask the right questions, listen closely, and offer solutions that align with others' values. The Child Rescue Mission: A Life-Changing Experience:In 2014, Paul's life was transformed when he participated in an undercover operation to rescue children from a sex trafficking ring in Cartagena, Colombia. Though initially hesitant to get involved in such a dark issue, Paul's participation in this mission ignited his passion for child rescue. He has since been involved in more than 70 operations, working directly with law enforcement to free children from trafficking and bring perpetrators to justice.-------------------------------------------------------Key Takeaways:The Power of Influence: Understanding others' needs, offering solutions that align with their values, and building relationships based on trust and authenticity. The Importance of Giving: Philanthropy played a key role in Paul's success. Building Relationships and Integrity: Success comes from authentic relationships and being aligned with your values.Child Rescue Work: Paul's personal involvement in rescuing children from trafficking shows the profound impact that combining business success with philanthropy can have on society. Send us a textHello, I'm Richard Wilson, and I'm coming to you from a tax investment conference here in Hawaii. I've been talking with many of my clients, including ultra-wealthy family office managers, and we've had some interesting discussions about what it means now that Donald Trump is going to be the next president. I wanted to share some of those insights with you in this video.I'm not a political expert or an economist, but based on my conversations with family offices, investors, and founders in my network, I want to give you a snapshot of what I'm hearing from them about what we can expect under Trump's presidency. In other words, this is what 80% of the investors I talk to are predicting for the economy and different industries now that Trump has been voted in.What's likely to improve under Trump's presidency: Cannabis, psychedelics, oil and gas, energy, and U.S.-based manufacturing are expected to see growth.Business owners and founders will likely benefit from lower taxes, which will allow them to reinvest more in their businesses and the economy.I also think the real estate market will improve, with less volatility and less risk of a market collapse due to the economic growth that's anticipated. What could face challenges: If Trump lays off a significant portion of federal employees—whether 25%, 50%, or more—it could have an impact on spending, despite severance packages. This could affect the broader economy. There's also concern that Trump's aggressive trade policies and tariffs might lead to inflation. What I'm hearing from investors and business leaders: One point Elon Musk raised, which has come up in several investor conversations, is that the U.S. government has over 400 federal agencies. We've only been around for 200 years, so every year we've created two new government agencies. Musk calls them "brake pedals" that slow down economic growth. Many believe removing these barriers and adding "gas pedals" will lead to more entrepreneurship, more jobs, and better opportunities in the U.S.There's also a lot of hope that Trump's leadership could encourage more entrepreneurial opportunities. However, some investors are concerned about the impact of AI replacing jobs and the potential for mass government layoffs.Other key topics I've been hearing: Big pharma and big food companies are under increasing scrutiny. There's a push for healthier products, with some hoping that we'll see fewer chemicals in our food and more natural ingredients. Many investors are also worried about growing censorship and the potential loss of free speech. Some of the founders I've spoken with switched to supporting Trump because they believe he'll protect our ability to speak freely and explore the truth.I also want to mention that many Republicans who were hesitant to support Trump in the past may now see him as the best option, especially with Elon Musk's support and his principle-based approach to leadership. Even those who don't agree with everything Trump says recognize the importance of supporting policies that will protect free speech and promote economic growth. As an investor community, we do want to encourage business owners and investors to think critically about the potential impacts of these political shifts on their businesses, portfolios, and industries. How should we adjust our strategies and position ourselves moving forward with Trump as president? Thanks for watching, I look forward to shaking many of your hands at our annual investor summit next month where you can connect with 250+ investors and hear from more ultra-wealthy investors on stage than any other event held anywhere globally in 2024 or 2025. Shoot me a text at (305) 333-1155 if you want to learn more. #trumpeconomy #trump #inves

Send us a textIf you're new to the world of investor clubs and family offices, this advice will be particularly helpful!Welcome back! Richard Wilson here, from stunning Indonesia after our recent Single Family Office Summit in NYC. Today, I'm addressing a critical topic for anyone involved in family offices and investment strategies: the key phrases you should never say to an investor. When networking with ultra-wealthy investors and connected investors, certain common statements can backfire and hurt your chances of building valuable relationships. In this video, I'll highlight missteps to avoid, such as:"Let's connect, no agenda" – This might seem friendly, but it can come off as a waste of time for busy individuals."This is the best investment you'll ever see!" – Claims like these can sound arrogant and dismissive to experienced investors.
Send us a textJoin me, Richard Wilson, as I dive into the current state of raising capital. If you're a founder or run an investment fund, you may be facing unprecedented challenges in this environment. In this video, I share key statistics that illustrate the shifting landscape—such as a staggering 80% reduction in capital raised compared to 2022. With competition fierce and liquidity low, many are finding themselves in need of larger investors to recapitalize deals or consider rescue options.I'll discuss how current investments are structured to minimize risk, creating a tough environment for capital raising. However, there's a silver lining: building strong relationships with potential investors now can pay off in the future. For more insights, don't miss our $100 Million Rainmaker mini-series available in our playlist, featuring over three dozen strategies for capital raising.I hope to see you at one of our Family Office Club events soon! Rami Shabaneh, Senior Fellow, King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) joins host Richard Wilson and The 966 for Episode #135. Rami is a senior fellow with KAPSARC's Oil and Gas program, with a focus on global gas and hydrogen markets. He has nearly 15 years of research and industry experience analyzing energy markets and energy policy.Rami also co-edited the recently published, Clean Hydrogen Economy in Saudi Arabia, Domestic Developments and International Opportunitiesavailable for purchase on Amazon or Routledge as well as Taylor & Francis. Spanning 28 chapters the book is a first-of-its-kind analysis of the emerging global hydrogen economy from the vantage point of one of the world's biggest energy providers: Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom is optimally situated geographically between the major demand markets in Europe and North Asia, from where it can leverage clean hydrogen exports as a potential tool to become a player of strategic importance and successfully diversify its economy under its Vision 2030 program. In his discussion with Richard and The 966 Rami Shabaneh provides informed analysis of the "who," "what," "where," and "why" related to clean hydrogen development within and beyond Saudi Arabia.Coincidentally, this past week NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) initiated a major recruitment campaign for its world-leading green hydrogen plant as the project moves closer to its operational phase. The $8.4 billion facility, set to be the world's largest green hydrogen production plant, is targeting full operations by the end of 2026 and aims to produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen daily, potentially eliminating five million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.Rami Shabaneh is the second KAPSARC expert to join The 966. In January 2022, for Episode #22, Adam Sieminski, who had just finished serving as President of KAPSARC talked renewable energy and the Circular Carbon Economy.
